Video: McCain disavows Cunningham’s “Barack Hussein Obama” shtick

An early glimpse here at Maverick having already internalized the lessons of that Politico story and moving quickly to quash a talking point before it achieves liftoff. Dave Weigel’s right, though: Cunningham is notorious for this sort of rhetoric, so much so that it’s earned him recurring appearances on Hannity’s TV shows as the resident right-wing provocateur. McCain probably had nothing to do with choosing him as the warm-up act but his boys had better be more circumspect going forward, as having to retreat from this rhetoric over and over again will eventually start to smell a tad disingenuous. It’s early, though, so for now the left is cutting him a break.

Obama was not “born a Muslim”, nor was he “raised a Muslim”

If you are serious about getting the facts right, check them out. But i seriously doubt that.

you’re a Hillary supporter

Ya know, my Hillary Check hasn’t arrived this month. The only thing keeping me on the job is the health insurance.

Aristotle on February 26, 2008 at 5:55 PM

He was born and raised Muslim, and never publically rejected Islam - which makes him a muslim according to the Sharia.

This is basicly the “Golden Watch” argument truthers use. By their reconing, The video tpes of Osama Bin Laden are proven CIA/Mossad fakes because in them OBL is seen wearing rings and a watch, which is of course forbidden “according to the Sharia”.

A second example of inpenetable sophistry is exemplified thusly:

Franklin Delano Roosevelte, William Jefferson Clinton…

and

His middle name is off limits? Okaaaay….

Sue on February 26, 2008 at 5:41 PM

This sort of “I’m just being proper and thorough” crap is so juvenile, you want to slap the person saying it in the mouth as if they were the petulent children they resemble.

Hot Air can start banning these people, or they can allow these people to make fools of them and take the site down with them.

The guy who came up with the oh-so-clever “Osambo” epithet, btw, still holds his posting privleges.

I have a better idea, Hiney, instead of just banning those bigoted idiot-procovateurs who dare to say middle names, why don’t we set up a nice Gulag for them in Alaska? I think it’s a good start up. Free speech was never such a good idea anyway (except of course for people who use terms such as “half witted assholes” to fellow posters - these are just fine).

Aristotle on February 26, 2008 at 6:04 PM

Do you want this lightweight commanding the world’s only superpower?

Any kind of (even cheesy) criticism that derails his bid (and sours him for the mostly-inattentive public mind) is fair game in politics.

Exposed and desperate, the Hillaryite sockpuppet starts revealing its underlying leftist rationalles, such as the conciiet that they are entitled to free speech rights on a private web site which they have chosen to troll as if it were a public commons.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 26, 2008 at 6:11 PM

I wasn’t aware of the fact you own HA, Hiney. Maybe you should update Michelle about it.

More like, raising this idiotic issue distracts people from discussing the real problem, McCain’s largely liberal positions. We need to stay focused here, stop being distracted by the shiny objects and hammer away at this RINO.

IT…IS…HIS…NAME! When did it become a foulmouthed curse to say a person’s name aloud? When the libtards who control Politically Correct thought, speech, and action declared it thus. That’s when.

By the looks of it, John Sydney McCain is just another thought police hall monitor.

Just a thought: A list of acceptable presidential middle names: Delano; Fitzgerald; Milhouse; Wilson; Herbert-Walker; Quincy; Knox; Howard; David: Baines, etc

List of unacceptable presidental middle names?: Hussein. By this logic, he cannot become president? Unless he changes him name.

List of unacceptable presidental middle names?: Hussein. By this logic, he cannot become president? Unless he changes him name.

We have never battled a dictator named “Delano; Fitzgerald; Milhouse; Wilson; Herbert-Walker; Quincy; Knox; Howard; David: [or] Baines.”

If Harry Truman or Dwight D. Eisenhower had campaigned against an opponent whose middle name was “Hitler,” their opponent could have reasonably complained if their campaigns insisted on referring to him by his middle name.

It’s a matter of context. Nothing inherently wrong with the name, but its associations in American culture at the moment are indisputably negative.

DavidV on February 26, 2008 at 6:27 PM

I’m saying that HA’s inaction is shameful in the positive statement it makes.

I’m glad you made it clear you are ashamed with HA and AP.

Btw, i made a google search on your name and it turns to be you and DaveS are pretty much the radical left marks here. I wondered why you both pretend to speak on behalf of the management while cursing other members relentlessly. I guess vulgarity is just a leftist trait.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 26, 2008 at 6:23 PM

With respect, it appears to the casual observer that there is a pissing and name-calling contest going on. This story is actually a non-story, Cunningham called Obama a “hack”, and the assumption was that the use of “Hussein” was the objectionable comment that McCain is apologizing for. Who, of any measurable intelligence, cares?

Seriously, anyone that is concentrating on the use of Obama’s middle name being used is getting distracted from issues of actual relevance, namely that McCain is so out of touch with the Conservative base.

Geministorm on February 26, 2008 at 6:32 PM

Allah… you guys should really look into adding some sort of moderation system so that we can avoid the “lowest common denominator”, meaning people like FloatingRock, j0, malan89, Vote Sauron, fogw, TheSitRep, et al. I understand that you don’t want to run around banning people just to maintain some intellectual standards, but a moderation system would be a great way to address that.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 26, 2008 at 6:43 PM

Another said something which made me believe that it’s an unabatable tendency; something like, “We can’t talk about his color, we can’t talk about him being a muslem, what are we supposed to talk about?”

That was me (although I didn’t put it exactly like that), and it was sarcasm directed at the growing list of things that seem to be off-limits when discussing Obama.

And that’s even if there is relevance that you don’t happen to see. (i.e. women voting for Hillary just because they want a woman in the Oval Office; blacks voting for Obama just because he’s half-black).

How about the issues, folks?

No one is disregarding the issues, although the problems with McCain and the issues have trumped all so far.

Can you explain how it (his middle name) is relevant?

Hiney Von Pewps on February 26, 2008 at 5:22 PM

His background and ties to his family in Kenya is relevant, as is the story that Ed is developing. As someone else reminded you, we are in a global war against Islamists. We have examined the current administration’s problems in determining good Muslim/bad Muslim. (re:CAIR and the Saudis). It is fair to do the same with Obama. Will his sympathies toward Odinga effect our policy in Kenya or elsewhere against Islamic Jihad? Is he going to appease Muslims on our own soil and grant them creeping sharia?

Even if McCain has the “right” to mention Obama’s middle name, it seems to me the smart political move is to stay away from that.

I agree with DavidV above. Highlighting “Hussein” in the current environment is very different from mentioning other, more situationally innocuous middle names.

You, and others on this board, need to learn to understand the difference between Muslims and Islamists. Sadder even, many on this board need to learn the difference between a Muslim and someone who has a Muslim-sounding name because he is named after his father, who was born a Muslim but was an athiest ex-Muslim by the time his son was was born.

Obama’s middle name will have an effect on only a few swing voters.

It’s going to be a non-issue for the most part because there are real, striking issues such as higher taxes, surrender in Iraq and bankrupting the government with universal healthcare that is much more important to conservatives to defeat.

When you attack somebody for something which is an accident of their birth, and someone else calls you a bigot for it, it’s because you’re a bigot. They’re really not just saying that to avoid a larger issue. He doesn’t have to be nasty, but he damn well better knock off the “i have great respect for obama/clinton”, “i think he/she would make a great president’ BS, and damned quick.

If he thinks he’s going to get kid gloves and apologies everytime a dem winds up an audience like that about him, he’s delusional.

Is this politics, or not? Does McCain want to win, or not?

We’re well and truly fooked.

Although I suppose you might say that “sarchasm” is an intentional pun on your part to illustrate the great gulf between your enlightened brilliance and the rest of us dumb, racist conservatives.

And in general: Sarcasm is much more effective when it is seen as witty and germane to the discussion, rather than merely ‘potty mouth’ insults.

fogw on February 26, 2008 at 7:37 PM

I think McCain can (and should) take the high road, let the Democrats be nasty and use identity politics. I don’t think that will hurt him. If anything, more people will gravitate towards that. What’s going to kill him is if/when his policies and voting history are revealed through the national media, even if they agree with his positions, they will know that the *majority* of republicans/conservatives will find little or no ground in common with him. Most likely, this will result in a poor conservative voter turnout.

That must be a new standard.
In which case, I would personally like to apologize for Senator Ted Kennedy calling his colleague ‘Osama’.

I was going to reply to your post wherein which you called me a “lying Marxisto” by asking you how exactly you inferred from my writing that I believe in dialectic atomism, but this more recent posting of yours is more worthy of rebuttal.
Your screen name is “Aristotle,” so let us rephrase your statement in the form of a syllogism. You say:
1: Muhammed was a ruthless killer
2: Muhammed invented the religion that all Muslims follow
3: Therefore, all Muslims are ruthless killers
In order for the conclusion to follow from your two premises, two additional premises are needed. They are, to wit:
2.1: The religion Muhammed invented unequivocally demands its followers to be ruthless killers
2.2: No one can claim to be Muslim unless they follow 100% the exact teachings of Muhammed
Even if we accept premise 2.1, it is still very possible for someone to follow Islam incompletely or inconsistently and still call themselves Muslim. There are people who call themselves Christians who do not castrate themselves, people who call themselves Jewish who do not kill gays and witches, people who call themselves Buddhist who do not completely renounce all earthly desires, and even people who call themselves Marxists who do not spend their days agitating for bloody revolution.
You can argue that for a moderate to call himself a Muslim is for that person to engage in a theological contradiction, but that contradiction alone does not make said moderate non-Muslim.

LOL… says the person who thinks that Obama is secretly a servant of Mohammed, sent to us from his devoutly practicing father who cleverly feigned an athiest conversion decades ago so that we on Hotair would buy the preordained divine ruse today.

I think that about sums it up. LOL. Go back to Democratic Underground now. You won’t be missed.

DaveS on February 26, 2008 at 7:58 PM

Obama may have not chosen to be called Hussein, but he did intentionally choose a Muslimoid Africa-first Church and a had mentor who worshipped Nation of Islam and Farrakhan.

This is not a conspiracy, it’s the reality.

But since you don’t accept the fact that there is no moderate Islam even after you got pure evidence from Robert Spencer, and are telling me to go to DU for retyping what i’ve seen by the editors of THIS BLOG, you are officially classified a Troll in my book as well as your paranoid friend, Hiney. Seriously, what’s “potty mouth” about aknowleging your mother’s role in your birth?

Why are we not allowed to even mention that you slipped out of your mother’s birth canal nine months after your father deposited his semen up there? Whatever his name is.

What’s with this creepy Robert Spencer worship? Is this some new Scientology spinoff? Learn to think for yourself.

Exit question (to pay homage to AP): What’s Robert Spencer’s middle name?

Once muslim your [sic] allways [sic] a muslim, fact ask Robert Spencer or others.

Or others, you say? How about Ayaan Hirsi Ali? I’m certain she would disagree.

Besides, if that were true, then nobody would be put to death for apostasy, because it would be impossible for a Muslim to be an apostate.

with all due respect…
I don’t think the news media has to “reveal his policies and voting history to create grief for this…man. His history for the last 8 years or so has been pathetic (and I’m being nice here) in the eyes of conservatives. they know his record, this is precisely why he is getting so much grief. Now granted, he basically has won the nomination, but look at his voting & speech turnout compared to Mr. OBama-nation’s turn out? its scary. this will be a disaster for Señor Juan McCain, and for conservatives. I predict an embarrassment reminiscent of Reagan vs. Mondale.

And i STILL don’t know who to vote for.

I can’t!

disclaimer: I apologize to any person or persons of the liberal persuasion that I may have offended with my “Obama-nation” comment. I want to apologize for being disrespectful, im sure you would all make excellent Presidents, we just disagree on what an “excellent President” is…thats all. Furthermore, I’d like to separate myself, from myself and my comments.

No, for my point to be disproven you need a phonomenon, not an incident. Sheik Palazzi for example, is not a phenomenon but an incident.

What you said about Jews not burning witches and so on, the Reform Jews will say openly they don’t follow the Bible (in fact most Reform jews are atheists by as survey).

1.5 Billion Muslims out there, and 99.999% of them belong to Sunni, Shia and Wahhabi sects who support Jihad and Taqqiyah. Now contradict that.

Attacking people for things which are accidents of birth is stupid bigotry.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 26, 2008 at 7:16 PM

Even though it was unpreventable by him, his name is not an accident, however. It is a result of his parentage. And while it may be unfortunate timing, he happens to be running for President at a time when we are fighting a war against people of a certain ideology with whom his father may have been affiliated and his cousin seems to be now. The use of his middle name is a red flag. People can choose to pay attention to it or not.

That said, I do not think it wise for a candidate to refer to him using his middle name. As for Cunningham, perhaps McCain’s people should have paid more attention to his normal rhetoric. Or maybe they did. Maybe it was all a Rovian plot.

Is Allahpundit’s name considered blasphemy by Muslims?

I would guess so, but I don’t really care.

This could explain McCain’s strong response:

Dadmag: Your youngest daughter Bridget is adopted. Why did you decide to adopt Bridget?

McCain: Well it was primarily my wife’s Cindy’s idea. She was in Bangladesh and she and some of the medical personnel visited Mother Theresa’s orphanage to try and help the children there. There were two little baby girls there. One had a heart problem the other a severe cleft palate. Cindy was very concerned about their ability to survive and their need for medical treatment, so she decided to bring them here for medical treatment. She fell in love with both of them. We decided to adopt Bridget. Two close friends of ours, adopted Mickey, the other child.

Dadmag: You knew about your wife’s decision before hand?

McCain: (laughs) No. She arrived and said “Say hello to your new little daughter.”

Dadmag: A bit of a shock?

McCain: Yes indeed.

Dadmag: And how has it worked out? Are you happy with the decision to adopt Bridget?

McCain: Oh yes! She has enriched our lives. She’s a wonderful child, a complete part of our family and we love her.

Dadmag: Your other children accepted her well?

McCain: Oh yeah sure. She’s the toughest of the four. The youngest always has to be the toughest.

Dadmag: During your campaign for the Republican Presidential nomination Bridget became something of an issue in South Carolina didn’t she?

McCain: Yeah. There were some pretty vile and hurtful things said during the South Carolina primary. It’s a really nasty side of politics. We tried to ignore it and I think we shielded her from it. It’s just unfortunate that that sort of thing still exists As you know she’s Bengali, and very dark skinned. A lot of phone calls were made by people who said we should be very ashamed about her, about the color of her skin. Thousands and thousands of calls from people to voters saying “You know the McCains have a black baby” I believe that there is a special place in hell for people like those.
Dadmag: That must have made you pretty angry?

McCain: Yes, except that you have to consider the kind of people who do it. Getting angry doesn’t serve any useful purpose. But the calls increased my zeal for winning. (laughs)

Dadmag: There are an awful lot of African American children who could be adopted, but there are those who object, including African American organizations which have a policy against interracial adoption.

McCain: I see that barrier more and more breaking down. I think we are making great progress. We just need to make a lot more progress.

Dadmag: You had to go through an extraordinary process to adopt Bridget. A very intrusive process by the bureaucrats. They came to your home and rifled through your drawers. According to what I’ve read, adoption agency officials even asked about your sex life.

McCain: They were very intrusive. Unfortunately it is a disincentive to some parents because it’s so much easier to go overseas. And that leaves us, in this country, with thousands of children who want parents and thousands of parents who want children. One of the goals I’ve had for a long time is to try to encourage a much less convoluted process in order for parents to adopt a child.

Is John McCain also the youngest child in the family?

Cunningham is frightening, like a Hillbilly - deliverance type who got lucky and got a radio show. He’s a Lew Rockwell - Alex whats-his-name Ron Paul type conspiracy theory maniac.

John McCain is way too classy for this loser. Look at the faces of McCain’s supporters - can you say painful??
