Video: McCain disavows Cunningham’s “Barack Hussein Obama” shtick

An early glimpse here at Maverick having already internalized the lessons of that Politico story and moving quickly to quash a talking point before it achieves liftoff. Dave Weigel’s right, though: Cunningham is notorious for this sort of rhetoric, so much so that it’s earned him recurring appearances on Hannity’s TV shows as the resident right-wing provocateur. McCain probably had nothing to do with choosing him as the warm-up act but his boys had better be more circumspect going forward, as having to retreat from this rhetoric over and over again will eventually start to smell a tad disingenuous. It’s early, though, so for now the left is cutting him a break.

Way to go Mclame. It’s amazing..Kennedy can call Obama Osama and it’s no big deal at all just a “oops” thing yet this guy actually says Obamas REAL name and it’s a big deal?? lmao. God help this country.

Was the apology even about the “Hussein” thing? I don’t think so. Cunningham just said Barry O’s name. He didn’t even stress the “Hussein” part. I don’t think that was the disparaging part referred to by McCain. It was all the other shtick.
tommylotto on February 26, 2008 at 4:40 PM
That’s his name. And I didn’t hear any “disparaging remarks”. He attacked Obama on policy, ethics, dealings, and behavior. He just happened to use the man’s full name. What’s the issue, Senator McShamnesty?

Some wisdom that I find is best to live by:
Never apologize for something you did not do.
I cannot listen to the link here, but I am presuming that McCain actually apologized for what Cunningham said. That leads down the wrong path in my opinion. Just say you do not agree with what is said and that you find it unacceptable. Done deal.
Apologizing for an action implies personal ownership on that action. People then expect you to make up for it. If you didn’t do it or say it, then don’t hitch it to your ride.
SwampRat on February 26, 2008 at 4:42 PM
So we can’t mention His middle name? It is, in fact, Hussein. It’s not a bloody secret. If this keeps up McCain is doomed. What can he say about The Chosen One?
Vote Sauron 08 on February 26, 2008 at 4:42 PM
McCain can beat Obama without resorting to this “Hussein” stuff, it’s a political loser to start up with that kind of schoolyard puff.

TheSitRep on February 26, 2008 at 4:45 PM
Cunningham–and apparently a lot of people here, unfortunately–is a complete f’ing retard. Even the crowd behind him was like, “Dude… you’re embarrasing yourself.”
On a related note, I don’t see how Cunningham even manages to keep a show on the air… he’s even more obnoxious to listen to than Hannity is nowadays.
DaveS on February 26, 2008 at 4:46 PM
Also, any media source that plays content without explicit action by the user–like pushing “play”, for example–is a media source that should be shunned and shamed into acceptance of basic web etiquette expectations.
DaveS on February 26, 2008 at 4:47 PM
True. And as the USS Clinton takes on water, he (I think) should remain clean of any of those tactics as she falters. It’s poor strategy to equate oneself with the political maneuverings of a losing candidate, and that would be inevitable if he didn’t stay aloof right now.
Spirit of 1776 on February 26, 2008 at 4:48 PM
Bill Cunningham was just on Sean Hannity’s radio show and he’s is fired up and mad. He told Sean that the McCain camp told Bill to “fire up the crowd” for McCain.
FYI – Cunningham will be on Hannity and Colmes tonight. This should be fun!
I’ve listened to Bill Cunningham for years because he’s on a local talker.
Oink on February 26, 2008 at 4:49 PM
The problem is that the Obama people already have barrels of powder about “racism” and are ready to unload on anyone who attacks barak. McCain can beat him without playing this and giving the other side more ammo.
William Amos on February 26, 2008 at 4:49 PM
His silly and untruthful attacks on Romney being against the surge were “classy” attacks, or is his “class” is reserved to reaching across the aisle?
You have a Republican presidential candidate who lies and backstabs about fellow Republicans but denounces TRUTHFUL remarks made against Democrats. Good luck with that thing winning the elections.
Aristotle on February 26, 2008 at 4:49 PM
Because McCain is a media darling and his last name is boring, old “Sydney”. Look at how many times Keith Olbermann called Romney “Willard Mitt Romney” because he thought it would make Romney look dumb or something.
malan89 on February 26, 2008 at 4:50 PM
Oh Yes. I know quite a bit about him.
…..and before anyone jumps my case about Parsley. If you go to his Church, next time you see him, ask him about the New Chevy Corvette he used to drive, when he was in “Bible College”. and the time he decked a guy in the mouth, and knocked him out, because he thought the guy was flirting with his now wife. Or ask him about the former staff members who have filed lawsuit against him.
Or better yet, confront him with 1 Timothy 6:6-11, when he goes into his Prosperity doctrine.
I did this once to one of those kind of people and the display of stammering, accusing me of being demon possessed was truly an amusing site to behold.

McCain seems to feel that Obama is, or should be, ashamed of his own middle name, which suggests that McCain is some sort of racist or nativeist or something.
FloatingRock on February 26, 2008 at 4:53 PM
McCain and his people cannot be serious. This whole event was created in order to bash Obama and Clinton, and show McCain as the bigger man.
Who really thinks the McCain campaign didn’t know what Cunningham was going to speak in a disparaging, inflammatory manner? That’s what he does. I’m not buying the ignorance defense, but some will, and he’ll certainly get a pass this time. It will happen again, however, and the left will not be so kind.

Why the f__k is Cunningham campaigning for McCain? Instead, just do what Conservatives should do, and treat it like, say, a war between al Qaeda and Hizbullah, where neither is on your side.
McCain believes in reaching out to Democrats. I suggest that Conservatives follow his example, and directly support Obama. After all, why vote for McCain and get Dem policies implemented, when you can get that very result voting for the real thing? Just eliminate the middle man, and go from there.
Only good thing about this nomination – like Dole in 1996, McCain may leave the Senate, and once he does, Republican senators can actually start supporting… Republican policies in the Senate.

WTF? Do you run around saying calling people by their middle name with no good reason? Why didn’t you refer to John Sidney McCain, just now? This silly talking point that you and others are parroting–”it’s his middle name, why is he ashamed of his middle name, blah blah blah”–is not cute… it is not clever. It just makes you look bigoted, and gives the impression that you are also a pretty stupid person. Afterall, no intelligent person would actually believe that such a thing made them sound cute or clever.
It is nothing less than a bold-faced attempt to inject religious-bigotry as a force in the campaign, and frankly religious bigotry is not something that I care to claim as a “tool” on my side.
Allah… you guys should really look into adding some sort of moderation system so that we can avoid the “lowest common denominator”, meaning people like FloatingRock, j0, malan89, Vote Sauron, fogw, TheSitRep, et al. I understand that you don’t want to run around banning people just to maintain some intellectual standards, but a moderation system would be a great way to address that.

You’re right, implying that a candidate was born Muslim, raised as a Muslim and was given a Muslin middle name is completely irrelevant in a nation which is currently in a bitter world war with Islamism.

I believe B. Hussein Obama was named what he was named by a practicing Muslim. If B. Hussein Obama is not proud of his heritage, what is he? His brother is a strict radical Muslim. The pastor of his church holds Louis Farakhan in high regard and has been known to travel with him. I think the addage that if one talks like a duck, walks like a duck and is seen in constant companion ship with ducks, there is a possiblity that said individual is a duck. There is nothing holy about Obama. Unless you want this empty shirt foisted upon us as President, we must pull out all the stops. Let the American people know who and what this man is and what he represents. Actions speak louder than the pretty words that pour from his maw.

McCain did the right and best thing- and the right thing and the best thing ain’t always the same.
Obama’s strength (and his only strength) is that he’s a likeable guy who doesn’t overtly play the race card. For McCain to get personally negative or even vaguely racial only hurts him. Witness the blowback Hillary’s campaign has gotten.
Anyone who thinks he shouldn’t have disavowed Cunningham knows less than nothing about electoral politics and can’t be taken seriously.

I’m a lot smarter than you are, so your retard mind tricks aren’t going to work on me.
Furthermore, YES, it is indeed bigoted to imply that anyone with a Muslim-sounding name–or even anyone who is actually a Muslim, which Obama isn’t–is somehow in cahoots with Osama bin Laden. That is perhaps the stupidest, most mind-numbing thing about you and others like you.

DaveS on February 26, 2008 at 5:28 PM
Electing to the presidency a moderate Muslim who vowed (credibly) to put his country above his religion would not be an awful thing. The worst that could happen is that he would be as naïve with regard to the WoT as the current slate of Democratic candidates has pledged to be. And it would be far better than electing a Christian president who openly vowed to baptize the Constitution in the fires of fundamentalism, ridding it of such heretical trappings as freedom of religion and freedom of speech.
Making hay over Obama’s middle name is no less silly than complaining that our chief negotiator for the Treaty of Ghent had the very English middle name “Quincy.” And besides, Aristotle, you seem to have missed the fact that Barack Hussein Obama is not a Muslim, so this whole issue is entirely moot.

1. There is no such thing as a “Moderate Muslim”.
2. There is no proof he puts his country above anything at all. Except putting his hands over his penis when anthems are played.
He was born and raised Muslim, and never publically rejected Islam – which makes him a muslim according to the Sharia. His “Church” is Black-Supremacist-Muslimoid in nature which worships Farrakhan.

I don’t think there was a single factual, intelligent point in your entire post. Obama was not “born a Muslim”, nor was he “raised a Muslim”, and who gives a rats ass what Shari’a has to say about anything? If someone decides that they aren’t a Muslim, then Islamic law can go pound sand.
One thing has become clear here… Obama apparently has a better understanding of flag etiquette than you do.
You should really just go back to the moonbat sites that you came from. I’m actually becoming pretty convinced that you’re a Hillary supporter. Go hang out with others who support your candidates… don’t cheapen the dialog at other sites.

McCain distancing himself was a smart move. He’s running for President of the United States, not chairman of the local PTA. Everyone has witnessed how that type of speech making approach has worked out for Clinton. Those in her own party are “booing” her when she does it. Civility, maturity, and a sense that McCain understands that this is serious business will serve him well.
