Team Hillary: What’s the problem with circulating a photo of Obama in tribal garb?

posted at 11:34 am on February 25, 2008 by Allahpundit

Oh, Hillary. Ohhhhh, Hillary.

If Barack Obama’s campaign wants to suggest that a photo of him wearing traditional Somali clothing is divisive, they should be ashamed. Hillary Clinton has worn the traditional clothing of countries she has visited and had those photos published widely. This is nothing more than an obvious and transparent attempt to distract from the serious issues confronting our country today and to attempt to create the very divisions they claim to decry. We will not be distracted.

See, it’s you who’s prejudiced for finding any untoward intentions in her waving around a photo of Obama wearing a turban. Note well, per Ambinder, the non-denial here that the campaign is circulating the photo. Painfully obvious exit question: If the photo’s so mundane and inconsequential, why are they circulating it in the first place?

To remind everyone why his first name is Barack, and his middle name is Hussein. They’re just being informative, those good Clinton folks…

Entelechy on February 25, 2008 at 11:41 AM

According to Drudge, Maggie Williams (who replaced Solis on Clinton’s campaign) had this to say in response to Obama’s condemnation of the release of these photos:

“Enough. We will not be distracted.”

Am I missing something here? Is Maggie saying that Obama should be ashamed for defending himself???

Drudge DID post photos of Hitlery wearing a hijab and dark colored coat in some Muslim country embracing a similarly-garbed woman; of BJ wearing some similar tribal garb, and of W wearing some clownish-looking blue & gold chinese long silk smock. Which basically, utterly negated the jab at Obama that the Clinton campaign was attempting to make.

In other words:

A) Toss some meaningless photo jab that tries to paint Barack as a Muslim when all he was doing was the very same thing Hills did wearing the hijab (trying to honor the locals by looking like a local)

B) Let Barack get ticked off and defend himself

C) Chastise him for defending himself and denounce him as being divisive

Does this not look like some brainless scheme of the pot calling the kettle black? And doesn’t Clinton’s campaign wind up being the one that looks far more divisive by pulling a stunt like this? Can we say “BACKFIRE?”

New name for the Clintonistas: “Los Desperados”. A stupid stunt like this one shows how TRULY DESPERATE they are. Talk about a REACH!

Anything that cements BHusseinO to the muslim world, the muslim faith and his ties to domestic terrorists is a point for the good. sure it might not help clinton at this stage since the hard left is now in control of the party but by hillary putting this out there, it gives the repubs clean hands. It also will set the stage for the general election. This election will be about security and the economy. It is simple as that McCain is strong on one weak on the other. BHO is the same. Thus anything that plays to the repubs strength is a plus in my book. Go hillary stay alive a little longer, do more damage to the left wing and set the stage for your revenge. Hell I might switch parties just to keep hillary alive for the convention.

CP on February 25, 2008 at 11:48 AM

Not so fast here. Here’s another scenario…Just last night Hillary started attacking the ‘halo’ that has been coronated on Obama. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if the Obama crowd is fueling this fire. Circulate a photo (that’s bound to get out eventually), blame it on the Clintonistas…to detract attention from the meat of her most recent argument: Obama is an empty suit. This line of attack against the Messiah seems to be the only thing that can stick, and Obama knows it.

I think she’s decided her only choice is to either bow out now, or start hitting hard and going as negative as she can as a last ditch effort, and see how it affects the Texas, Ohio, Vermont and Rhode Island results.

Trouble is, the longer Barack can keep his cool and respond very calmly (as he did on Saturday) every time she decides to exercise her freedom of screech, the more he looks like a decisive, cool, calm, collected leader (i.e., the more “presidential”) and the more she looks like she’s gone off the deep end and needs a serious twelve-step anger management seminar. “APA – Angry Politicians Anonymous”.

And frankly, I think it’s gonna backfire on her BIG TIME. People want a president who’s gonna be tough and firm and stand his/her ground when it makes sense, compromise when it makes sense. They DON’T want a president who rages like that.

I’m of the opinion this was the Plouffe strategy all along: She had to either bow out or get very negative and hit hard, so they distributed the Ohio flyers to bait her into responding exactly as she did on Saturday…ALL IN ORDER TO PROVIDE HIM THE OPPORTUNITY TO RESPOND as he did on Saturday (caps for emphasis, not yelling). In other words, I believe Barack and Plouffe are playing her like a fish on a line, a puppet on a string.

IMHO she’s TOAST. I still think he’s an empty suit who spews entrancing, enchanting hypnotic language when he talks (yet lacks serious content), but he’s CLEARLY out-politicking her).

Shirotayama on February 25, 2008 at 11:50 AM

I’m not as upset about the photo as I am his ties to the Trinity United Church of Christ. All you have to do is nose around on their home page http://www.tucc.org/about.htm and take note of their mission statement etc. He says he’s been a member there for 20 years? Geez, 20 years of indoctination in Black separatism and their “Non-negociable Commitment to Africa”. Kinda makes it hard to believe that he would’t put his raciest religion first and Politics second.

Shirotayama on February 25, 2008 at 11:42 AM

This was a very shrewd move by the clintons. Ohio is the reason. you have a conservative southeastern Ohio, you have a racist Western Ohio and Western Ohio. BHO strentgh is in Northern Ohio.

the rumors of BHO past ties to muslim faith are out there. this cememts those rumors. We are a nation at War. You tie in the “news” of BHO mingleing with domestic terroists and it isn’t hard to come to some unpleaseant conclusions. the Clintos do NOT come at you from the front, they bob and weave. Hit from the sides. They use little pieces so that voters come up with the big picture seemingly on their own.

Personally IMO it might be a bit too little too late for it to work for Hillary but it isn’t for the repubs. You now are seeing what the general will be like. The race card will not be played it will be the muslim card, the terroists card, the inexperience card, the manchurian canidate card. What do we really know about BHO? will become the question of the month. what do we know of his history, what has he done, is he a pied piper leading us a stray. All these attacks will come to try to get the American people to questions and to in the end not trust BHO. After all BHO middle name is the same as Saddam’s last. It isn’t much of a stretch to tie BhusseinO to these names and faces. “Do we really want a president with such close ties to our enemies?” will be the theme come the general… will it work? possibly. BHO is not JFK. Their backgrounds are the same, their religions are not the same their backing is not the same. buyer remorse will set in for the Regean democrats I think…

unseen on February 25, 2008 at 12:02 PM

Hmmm…

Actualy I think this was put out to be a reminder of how he was raised…. which IS an issue to some of us.

There is a very good reason that you have to be born here to be President… and one that still makes sense to most of us, we want an AMERICAN running the US.

For a large portion of Obamas childhood he was NOT raised in America… and ALL studies have shown that those formative years are extremely important to who you eventualy become. You can overcome that initial programing, but under stress and duress you usualy revert to early childhood training and examples.

As your “moral compass” IS indoctrinated into you pretty young, the question becomes does he have the same “moral compass” as me??? ie, can I trust him???

So, to me, the picture is not a low blow, but a reminder of how he himself says he was raised….

Personally I don’t see the big deal. I used to want to see Obama smear Hillary, now I want him to be brought down and then see both go to never- never land, of course.

I have a question that I can’t find anywhere. Where is Obama’s mother? Is she alive? We know she was white, if alive is it not odd that we never hear or see from her or have her mentioned. If someone knows, I’d be very interested.

Conservatives R Us on February 25, 2008 at 12:07 PM

Unseen,

Perhaps you’re right, I was thinking more of the general population than any racist tendencies in Ohio, a state I’ve only visited a few times on business and don’t know so well. So from that perspective, perhaps it was shrewd.

On the other hand, I think a lot of people are gonna see through the tactic as lame desperation particularly given the similar photos Drudge posted of Hills, BJ, and W, which to me totally take the wind out of the sails of the Clintonistas’ arguments. In the end, I think this move will hurt her more than it will Obama, but who knows, perhaps you’re right.

I suppose time will tell, next Tuesday night, which of us turns out to be right. It’ll be interesting to see.

This truly is incredible theater and spectacle to witness, I’ll give it that much.

Nope. Both of his parents have gone to the great beyond.

As for the person who said that a “significant portion of his childhood, he was raised outside the US”, does anyone know exactly how many years he spent childhood living in Indonesia? For some reason, “two years” sticks out in my mind but I’m not sure. Will have to research that.

Shirotayama on February 25, 2008 at 12:11 PM

OK, found it: 1967 to 1971. Four years. Actually, that IS a significant period of childhood, from the time he was 6 to the time he was 10. Pretty important developmental phase in any kid’s life in terms of developing an early worldview.

Shirotayama on February 25, 2008 at 12:14 PM

I love this. make some popcorn. I love watching “When Leftists attack”. The long-term damage the leftists are doing to themselves has been a dream of mine for a long time. There are already hard feelings on both sides. The candidate left standing is facing the daunting task of reconciling two rabid sides contaminated by the self-righteousness of their particular brand of identity politics.

I am in an environment where the left dominates and the conversations/debates/heated arguments between Obama’s fanatics and the Clintonistas are an awesome thing to behold.

The Obama supporters call the Clinton supporters “non-progressive” (a slur?) or (i love this one) “reactionary” or when debating a particularly well informed Clintonista they pull out the big debate ender; “The failure to support Obama could be construed as racist” to wit the
savvy Clintonistas say ask/retort but failure to support woman as accomplished as Hilary could be deemed sexist”

Anecdotally, most of these arguments end badly (at least here at law-school). There are no policy debates here, this is all identity politics. Basically both sides have boiled it down to “support my side or there is something wrong with you”. That’s the sort of argument that engenders hard feelings. I know i’m on the right so i’ve seen this in action first hand.

My intuition is telling me the victorious primary candidate is not going to be able to reconcile with the other half of democratic party in time to save themselves from defeat in the general.

It is a very fun thing to watch them implode using the identity politics (and victim) tactics on one another.

i think it was a good move but like I said I also think it was too little too late. this stunt should have been going on for the last 2-3weeks slowly building the case against BHO. I see not only Ohio but PA in these calculations. Randell’s comments where not taken out of thin air. From living in Ohio, PA and NC I would say racism is 3 times higher in the OH and PA than in NC. Not just from whites but from blacks also. throw in the growing peoblem of immigration and racism is growing stronger in the Northern states not less.

But this picture was more for the muslim thread of thought than anything else. racism will play a role just not how people think of race issues in present day. It will be the idea of “trust/fear” not dislike or hatred.
BJC attacked from the hatred/dislike front in SC and got beaten for it. This is a new softer attack on the same vein. I’m just glad the dems did it first and not the repubs. Now the theme is set. Will McCain use it?

Time will tell like you say.

Obama should release the photos of Hillary Clinton kissing and hugging Suha Arafat immediately after Suha Arafat said Israel was deliberately poisoning Palestinian children. It was an ancient antiSemtic slur and Hillary said nothing. Days after, when she was safely back in Washington, Hillary issued a statement saying she condemned Suha Arafat’s remarks. Rick Lazio brought it up in the 2000 Senate campaign in New York and Hillary said it showed Lazio’s “lack of experience” in foreign affairs. I wonder if Obama will have the guts to bring it up.

Hillary’s team is attempting to play on a national racism that no longer exists. They have spread the narrative for so long that they believe it.
Our reaction is a nationwide “meh”.

joewm315 on February 25, 2008 at 2:23 PM

I suggest Hillary shines a light on who might find their way into the Messiah’s cabinet. Who is in this fellow’s network?

shaken on February 25, 2008 at 2:27 PM

Do we have a Muslimchian candidate running for president? Hmmmm!

pocomoco on February 25, 2008 at 2:36 PM

Yep, let’s break out the popcorn and soft drinks. Gotta be ready for the fireworks coming in the debate.

Hawthorne on February 25, 2008 at 2:39 PM

Obama should come out for the debate tomorrow dressed in that outfit.
And then ask Hillary a question in Spanish…

Clinton will go hard before she bows out, that’s a definite. A Clinton never goes down without a nasty, nasty fight. But just the fact that she would employ tactics like this underscores the liberal pandermongering mentality she has, but it is so ready to go back on when it suits her. She will castigate people for prejudice and insensitivity and lay on thick, syrupy rhetoric about civil rights and unity, but then she publicizes a photo like this based on what assumption? That people will be turned off because he’s wearing what appears to be Muslim-like attire? And this disqualifies him from being POTUS, or she thinks it will? It’s a glimpse into this woman’s actually psyche and it’s pretty scary, isn’t it? She’s desperate.

Democrats at War with each other. I knew it would come to this.

The Blackhawk Down troops would not be wearing Somali War Lord garb

Oh, for Pete’s sake. Ever seen a picture of Mohammed Farah Aidid? He was a coat-and-tie type.

DrSteve on February 25, 2008 at 2:56 PM

I would personally love to see B.O got for broke Tuesday night and push just the right buttons, just so we can then watch Shillary ignite and finally, at long last, see the real HRC, in all her shrieking, wild-eyed, foul-mouthed, lamp-throwing glory, live in front of millions on national and even international TV. .

pilamaye on February 25, 2008 at 3:02 PM

Looks like she’ll never learn.

What the definition of insanity? I’m not really sure, but in corporations all over America they define it as:
“doing the same thing and expecting different results.”

She did add the “gotcha” twist at the end where she blames Obama for being offended. It’s just too bad she’s not running for president of her sixth grade glass.

This kind of novel tactic would have been met with surprised wild eyes and applause, if her audience was comprised of 11 year olds.

Dorvillian on February 25, 2008 at 3:15 PM

Painfully obvious exit question: If the photo’s so mundane and inconsequential, why are they circulating it in the first place?

They got nothing.

timmo on February 25, 2008 at 3:25 PM

Her campaign is grasping at straws… or is this being circulated to increase debate ratings?

Hunt035 on February 25, 2008 at 3:37 PM

Hillary Clinton, the Bob Dole of 2008?

Some interesting insights from a conversation with a veteran Republican strategist.

1) Hillary Clinton is running a Republican campaign. Not that she’s running for the GOP nomination, obviously, but she’s running more or less the themes and styles of Bob Dole: She’s locked up all of the party establishment, touting all the endorsements, building up a campaign warchest, running on inevitability, on foreign policy, on experience. “That stuff works in a general election, but not the Democratic Primary,” the strategist notes. “Experience? Democrats have never cared about experience. They sent Bill Clinton up against an incumbent president.”

As Byron noted way back in 2003, Democrats in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina ranked terrorism and homeland security at the bottom of their list of concerns, out of a dozen topics. This was back in the run-up to the 2004 election; we’re one cycle further from the events of 9/11. The Democratic electorate isn’t worried about whether their candidate will be tough enough on terrorism, or how they are as a commander-in-chief.

2) McCain is now leading both Hillary and Obama in Rasmussen’s head-to-heads.

Painfully obvious exit question: If the photo’s so mundane and inconsequential, why are they circulating it in the first place?

Her contempt for the average American.

ThePrez on February 25, 2008 at 4:01 PM

Why isn’t the real story about Raila Odinga and Barack Hussein Obama all over the cover of every newspaper everyday until Hussein O drops out?

SaintOlaf on February 25, 2008 at 4:48 PM

Why would Obama go to Kenya and wear Somali clothes?

This from wiki

The Somali constitution discourages the promotion and propagation of any religion other than Islam. This sets Somalis apart from their immediate African neighbours, many of whom are either Christians (particularly the Amhara people and others of Ethiopia and Kenya)…

faraway on February 25, 2008 at 4:50 PM

the staffer was probably just trying to suggest it would be newsworthy to see Hillary in a dress–any dress.

hipgecko on February 25, 2008 at 6:17 PM

I must apologize to Mr. Obama. I was googling his Mom just now and discovered that his Mom died in 1995.

faraway on February 25, 2008 at 8:32 PM

She is now saying….

Do I even need to finish the sentence?

All together now, “IKnowNothingAboutIt

Of course, she thinks that her campaign may have something to do with the release, but she’s really not sure.

Insufferable.
