“I admit it: I’m voting for Barack Obama because he’s black. Yes, I’m voting for him because he’s qualified, intelligent, charismatic and competent — and because unlike Hillary Clinton, he opposed the Iraq war from the beginning. But if he weren’t black, and Hillary had opposed the war, I’d probably vote for her because of her greater experience. In any case, it’s a moot point, because if Obama weren’t black, he would not be the Democratic front-runner.
I believe that most of Obama’s supporters are voting for him for the same reason. Like me, they’re drawn to his idealism, his youthful energy, his progressive politics. But it’s his blackness that seals the deal.
And that’s OK. In fact, it’s wonderful…
Obama’s charisma, which is his unique political strength, is real, but it cannot be separated from the fact that he’s black. When Obama speaks of change and hope and healing divisions, his words carry an electric charge because of who he is: He embodies his own message, the very definition of charisma. As a black man offering reconciliation, he is making a deeply personal connection with whites, not merely a rhetorical one.
So white enthusiasm for Obama is driven by his race. But there’s nothing wrong with that fact.”

Had he come out in the beginning with a message along the lines of “I’m not black or white — I’m American…” he would have gotten my interest for sure because it would have been a much more sincere view of who he really is — not to be, just another politician with a motivational message that probably won’t get him very far.
The dynamics favor McCain in many ways — from senior citizens to independents and that biased element from both parties that will never pull the lever for a black man, not even a very qualified one such as Powell.

So let me get this straight: you should vote for Obama for the exact same reasons that a racist in Alabama voted for George Wallace in 1962 - strictly because of his race.
Brilliant.

Intelligent? Maybe, in a book sense. But in the real world sense? Nope.
Charismatic? Um, ok.
Competent? How would anybody know?
Tony737 on February 25, 2008 at 10:27 PM
I just find it interesting how the libs will use race when it suits them. BO is considered black while having a white mother and a black father, yet Bill Richardson is hispanic having a hispanic mother and a white father.

BTW, if Obama is going to talk about “healing divisions”, why does he belong to a racist church?
ninjapirate on February 25, 2008 at 10:31 PM
If it’s wrong to vote against a candidate because of his or her race - since the person’s race tells us nothing about them; after all, it’s just skin color - why would it make sense to vote in favor of someone because of his or her race?
Race, by itself, tells us nothing - absolutely nothing - about a person’s character or intelligent or capabilities.
There I go with that anachronistic thinking again. Gotta’ be more progressive in my views, I guess.

If Salon has captured the attitudes of the majority of Obama voters then we unequivocally have a blatant racist election process. Furthermore, if it’s acceptable to vote for someone because they’re black, then it is equally acceptable to vote for someone because they are white, or brown, or yellow, or red. It also follows that if race is a legitimate political discriminator then discussions of race are both necessary and acceptable as an integral part of the process.
Let the games begin.

We’re behind on equalizing quotas: we’re four black presidents short, based on my fuzzy state-sponsored mathematics. Let’s get the black quota out of the way….. in 16 years we can start working on the next disenfranchised group, unless we can combine different groups into a super candidate. Things are so much easier when they are color coded and compartmentalized. Obama will make a great Garanimal President. It’s much easier than having sound policies and defined principles.

So, in short, it’s ok to elect a black man (why not african-american person of the male gender?) due to his personality - even if he’s more than likely not qualified.
During a time of war.
With some pretty big economic issues to deal with.
Regardless the consequences, we’d be able to feel good about ourselves, as a nation.
So, it’s worth it.

The question is: Will Obama legalize all the invaders before or after he does the following.
QUESTION: What are issues and recommendations for solutions that are unique to Muslim Americans?
1. A Law against harrassment of a Muslim women wearing Hijab at the Airport, DMV and other public arenas.
2. Institute a Law to allow Muslim Employees to take a hours off from work for Friday Jummah Prayer.
3. Make the 2 Eid’s, recognized National Holidays on Calendars with days off from work.
4. Optional Halal meals in federal buildiings, public schools and colleges.
5. Provide prayer areas suitable for Salah and Jummah, in public and private facilities. (i.e. Malls, Airports, Universities and government buildings.)
6. Organize a Muslim American group to assist in recommendations for US foreign policy affecting majority Muslim countries.

I’m sorry, there’s a limit on logical thinking among Obama supporters. Your argument just makes too much sense. Please be more irrational in the future, then maybe they will listen.
Oh, and by the way, doing something TO someone because of their race is called “hate crime.” Doing something AGAINST someone because of their race is called “racism.” Doing something FOR someone because of their race is called “affirmative action.”
Make sense yet?
Nope, I don’t get it either.

As an American born and raised in the South, I have been taught and I have taught my son that it is wrong to judge a person by the color of his/her skin. Now I find out my parents and I have been wrong my entire life?
d1carter on February 25, 2008 at 10:48 PM
Racism is alive and well in America today. But not quite the way Sharpton and Jackson think.
I need to, at this point, urge anyone who hasn’t to go buy and read Jonah Goldberg’s book Liberal Fascism. It points out that liberals will co-opt (or find their roots in) any ugly ideology, be it fascism or racism, and think that because they are advocating it, it’s ok. He gives great examples of fascism with a smiley-face. Well, this is racism with a smiley-face. But it is racism nonetheless.
One good exercise I find is to either insert the word white for every use of the word black and see how it reads. Or, you can put all the points in the negative, i.e. “I won’t vote for Obama because he is black” and see how that strikes you.
But this argument has been played out before. Conservatives (most of them anyways) would prefer a color-blind society/government. Liberals find great meaning in the color of peoples skin. Go figure.

Perfect description of the state of the liberals. Voting for someone simply because they are Black, or a woman, or whatever, is no different than Al Gore buying carbon offsets for his lavish lifestyle, and getting a pass from the media, lefties, and from his conscience. Just like this situation in California, where a conservative legislator freed his (conscience), by paying just $45.00. It’s all so “vacuous”, as our great, and now missing, sadly, csdeven used to say.

White guilt keeps us in self-loathing mode. Makes it easier for the elites to play off it and force their own notions and power structures on people. We’re too busy beating ourselves up to notice the power grab. It’s effective. They can re-write history, co-opt movements, and establish counter-icons.

Props to Mr. Kamiya for at least being honest. At long last, the truth is out.
I like his strawman characterization of “right-wing” opposition to Obama (based on a TownHall.com post, natch) as being “affirmative action” writ large.
No one serious on the right is opposed to Obama because he represents affirmative action. It’s utterly stupid to claim that. People are opposed to Obama because of his ideas (such as they are) and policy prescriptions, and the fact that he is serving as nothing more than a flimsy screen for the fantasy projections of millions of Democrats.
Purple Fury on February 25, 2008 at 11:05 PM
So. Tell us why you are voting for Obama.
Connie on February 25, 2008 at 11:05 PM
Maybe it’s not race. They’re conservatives, and the blacks who won’t support them are liberals. So, they’re voting their ideology, which I applaud.
But there are other examples of voters voting on racial lines, and against their own ideology, and certainly blacks do this, too. Hard to know what the rules are.
Whites seem to vote ideology much more than race; but there are always lots of white candidates, so that’s easy.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I see Obama’s campaign and groundswell of support as evidence of a post-racist America. I don’t deny that the element you mention exists, but I just don’t think they are anything but an insignificant percentage of the electoate.
That’s not to say that there aren’t many who will never vote for this particular black candidate.

Obama WILL lose because he’s the Affirmative Action black candidate.
Whites when the economy was expanding, wages were constantly moving upward, and there was only one small, not-expanding racial group, could afford Affirmative Action because the pain of it was spread over many whites.
Now? Whites are a smaller percentage of the population and thus experience more pain. Lost opportunities for Whites are spread over smaller people. While Latino/Hispanic Affirmative Action recipients are ever growing. Affirmative Action is a loser for Whites and generates VERY popular initiatives such as Prop 209 in CA or MI’s anti-Affirmative Action winner.
Wealthy white Yuppies who face no pressures on their jobs or incomes from Affirmative Action support it. It (AA) keeps perceived competitive threats (upwardly mobile whites) at bay by removing some of them and replacing them with minorities (perceived less threat). Meanwhile white union workers face both globalized outsourcing (to India/China) and “diversity” aimed at replacing them with a Black/Hispanic candidate. White collar white workers face the same pressures. Their minority co-workers are un-fireable but they decidely are not.
To the extent that Obama is perceived as the “Black” Candidate he will LOSE. And lose big. It’s a bottom-line economic, pocketbook, survival-job issue.

Or let me add, Michelle Obama was right in her thesis. Black pols who must get elected in white districts and states have to pose as non-racial. Whites very understandably will NOT vote for a Black Identity Candidate.
Obama has many elements of Black Identity candidacy. Like Farrakhan’s endorsement. His disdain for the Flag. His apology for America. And so on.
Identity politics is a two-edged sword. Just ask Mayor Dinkins. HE created NYC as a Republican Mayoralty. After generations of Dems.

I think an African American president would finally put to rest the idea that the US is so racist that it would not except a black person as it’s president. We could finally put an end to using “institutional racism” as an excuse to explain why minorities are held back from success. However, I wish it were not a Democrat of the feel good, liberal, messianic, neophyte sort that Obama is. Isn’t it just like the Democrats to try to live up to some high minded ideal (ending racism), and in the process nominate a candidate not yet ripe for the challenge. Then when their candidate fails, they will say he failed due to racism
