Mitt’s son: Romney could jump back in

posted at 11:02 am on February 25, 2008 by Allahpundit

If the Brooks nightmare scenario materializes and someone proves that Maverick was shtupping Vicki Iseman in return for lobbyist favors, then yeah, he might drop out. He could survive in the sense of limping along to November, but with the myth of “straight talk” exploded in so spectacular a fashion he’d be fatally wounded. That would create a vacuum into which Huck, presumably, would move — unless someone blocked him. Enter the Romney:

Josh Romney, one of former Gov. Mitt Romney’s five sons, says it’s “possible” his father may rejoin the race for the White House, either as a vice presidential candidate or seek to become the Republican Party’s standard bearer if the campaign of Sen. John McCain falters…

He’s asked about speculation that given the McCain troubles his father might re-enter the Republican race either as a candidate for the top spot or as the party nominee’s vice presidential partner and Romney replies it’s “possible.” Then, he adds, “unlikely, but possible.”

It was the first sign from the Romney camp or family that the former Massachusetts governor’s political plans for 2008 were anything but over.

Such a move could provide a possible rallying point for conservatives, who awaited a perfect conservative candidate and held back from supporting Romney all during 2007 while the campaigns of other conservatives including Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback and Fred Thompson collapsed.

Exit question: Who else besides Mitt would jump in to try to fill the void? You don’t think…

Eh…You know, this doesn’t seem so much as waiting to see if McCain campaign “falters”…looks more like an “undermining” to me. As for Newt…I like him, but too much baggage.

I don’t. He’s far too full of himself to be bothered with campaigning and pandering to us plebes.

Tell Mitt’s son to shut the hell up and keep daddy warbucks at home. You had your chance and Mav took you out behind the woodshed after being outspent fifteen to one nationally. One of Mitt’s boys(maybe all of them) will run by 2030 since getting beaten in Presidential primaries has evidently become a family tradition. I even saw his staffer Bay Buchanon the day the Times smeared the Mav talking more about how Mitt and the comservatives got screwed instead of McCain. Enough, you lost, be a man and go away.

That’s an extremely long-shot, I think. But if McCain were crippled rolling into convention, I guess it could happen. I doubt Huck can rally the troops sufficiently to mount an effective campaign against Messiah 2.0.

Nevermind the infidelity, I saw the tape of John McCain speaking at some event. He was half-dead and totally unexciting. The cranky bastard doesn’t stand a chance against Obama when it comes to a comparison of charisma or personality. McCain supposedly has a sense of humor but, if so, he’s hidden it as effectively as Bob Dole did in 1996.

Somebody needs to fire up the base and Romney could do that. McCain certianly isn’t capable of providing the spark. I’ll probably vote for him if he is the Republican nominee but I really don’t care if he gets elected or not. I certainly am not going to defend him from Democrat attacks the way I’ve felt the need to support the current President. In other words, cranky bastard is going have to sink or swim by himself.

Mitt Romney does not want to become the 2008 version of Alan Keyes who, if you will recall, was brought in on a last minute basis to pinch-hit for Joe Ryan against Obama in the Illinois senate race… Mitt would just carry the banner of “everyone’s second choice” (which is basically what he was — he took second place in every contested primary except Iowa) and would never get traction.

That said, I think we Republicans should drop Iseman and stop feeding the story. The NYT has nothing except vague innuendo. Democrats (e.g. Lanny Davis) have gone on the record to say that Iseman did not have untoward lobbying influence over McCain. If we keep speculating about thsi goofy story spiking McCain’s candidacy, all we’ll do is feed it and signal to independent/undecided voters that “where there’s smoke, there’s fire.”

This is a scenario where I think that people who watch a debate may lean to Obama but if they are listening to a debate between the two on radio they may lean to McCain.

Kinda similar to the Kennedy-Nixon debate in 1960.

Newt married the 20 something teacher he first screwed when he was still a high school student, then served her with divorce papers when she was in the hospital recovering from uterine cancer surgery.

Then he was screwing his secretary WHILE leading the impeachment proceedings against WJC.

Er, that pig ain’t gonna fly.

Depends on whether the voters want style over substance. I’m not a big Mav fan but in terms of gravitas, he has the advantage. Our biggest disadvantage is that the GOP has decreased the differences between traditional party platforms, so the electorate may be more willing to adjust to Obama’s Marxist ways than before. I’m not a Bush basher, but he has allowed and contributed to this lack of contrast. The voters may be inclined to slide on down the slope, and it has little to do with McCain’s debate style.

From the William Kristol column today that will have NY Times Obamassiah supporters’ heads exploding:

It’s fitting that the alternative to Obama will be John McCain. He makes no grand claim to fix our souls. He doesn’t think he’s the one everyone has been waiting for. He’s more proud of his country than of himself. And his patriotism has consisted of deeds more challenging than “speaking out on issues.”

funky chicken on February 25, 2008 at 11:29 AM

amkun on February 25, 2008 at 11:19 AM

What exactly does “invested in his defeat” mean. Juan McCain is not my choice by any stretch but I’m not out there stuffing envelopes for Obama because a junta of liberal Republicans hijacked the primary process and foisted McCain on the party instead of getting behind a real Republican.

There is no excitement in the McCain candidacy as there was for Reagan in 1980 or even GWB in 2000. This years selection of a lackluster dinosaur mirrors Dole’s selection in 1996 who lost the general election by a huge margin. The contrast will be striking between the half-dead McCain with his tepid support from Republicans and Obama (who can’t even blow his nose without applause).

That’s the reality here. The GOP needs new blood not John McCain and his mindless minions whose only response to legitimate concerns are to tell us to “shut the hell up and support McCain because he is the nominee.”

highhopes on February 25, 2008 at 11:30 AM

Yawn. If in the unlikely (and admittedly so by Josh Romney) McCain was forced to pull out or became embroiled in a major scandal, there’s no reason to expect Romney wouldn’t pull for a brokered convention nomination. Why just hand it to the Huckster in the improbable event that McCain becomes irreparably damaged?

1) He still holds all his delegtes because he “suspended” his campaign. At the time he did so, he had (as I recall) over twice the delegates that Huckabuck had.

I also don’t want a dirty bomb or some killer germ released by a terrorist who comes into our country over the Rio Grande, unchecked.

So, I’d prefer a fence or better yet a wall so the influx of immigrants can be controlled. I really like the idea of knowing who is in the US, what they are doing, when they are going to return to their casa.

stenwin77 on February 25, 2008 at 11:54 AM

Nevermind the infidelity, I saw the tape of John McCain speaking at some event. He was half-dead and totally unexciting

Nothing a quart of Red Bull and a group of Midshipmen screaming “GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY” can’t fix.

No fences, watchtowers, or deterrent measures along our borders. Those had better be some strongly worded no trespassing signs.

You most decidedly are pro-amnesty/open borders because you are unwilling to do anything to stop illegal entry.

stenwin77 on February 25, 2008 at 11:59 AM

Nice try. Most national polls have Mav down a few points. It has been super duper quiet on the international front lately. again, Even the suggestion of an international crisi and Obamamessiah’s miniscule lead goes bye-bye.

THE CHOSEN ONE on February 25, 2008 at 11:36 AM

Because it has not been McCain vs Obama yet in the general race. Let’s watch and see if you drop your quoting of polls when McCain is down double digits to Obama during the general.

Somehow taking your inheritance of tens of millions, investing into hundreds of millions doesn’t exactly resonate with the american people as “work” or “earning”. Smoke another one bro.

THE CHOSEN ONE on February 25, 2008 at 11:40 AM

And that is a problem. If someone can take an amount of money, legally & honestly get THOUSANDS of percent returns on it they should be held up as an example for everyone to emulate. It should be seen as “work” because they had to put effort and planning into it. Just because they were not carrying a 50 lbs bag of cement, or getting covered in dirt/grease does not invalidate it as “work”.

You sound more like a anti-capitalist Democrat than a free market Republican. Which makes your support of McCain understandable.

I have just one thing to say, “Berkeley”. Now, can we all have a group hug?
———————–

Romney has shown he is capable (see Olympics scandal), so you needn’t bash him for his successes, even if he had a foot up on most. You sound an awful lot like McCain getting upset about people (Capitalists!) making money on Wall Street…

We have good reasons to distrust McCain and offer him only the shortest of ropes;

– McCain-Feingold
– McCain-Kennedy
– McCain-Lieberman
– Voting against tax cuts

Conservatives are being asked to voluntarily enter a vote for a man that has worked against our principles on *big* issues several times in the past. Must we merrily take the kick in the teeth and say, “Thank you, may I have another”?

I’m sorry if it bothers you that Conservatives are hoping and/or praying for any other choice than this poisonous pill, but its not like us to go down without a fight, or at least be noisy about it. Having to choose which path of destruction/failure the US will take has made us kind of edgy…

1. Rely on polls 9 months before the election, and

2. Think that the popular vote outweigh the electoral college?

Mitt, Rudy, McCain, Fred, Hunter, Tancredo….I’ll vote for the one that gets on the actual ballot. Before that happens I’ll keep my options open.

Ah! The Weekend at Bernie’s strategy. Prop the corpse up around active people and hope nobody notices.

You’ve got to admit that McCain has a serious charisma problem to deal with. His staffers can dress him up in a novelty St. Patrick’s Day Sweater and surround him with puppies but he still won’t come off as likeable as Obama does. Ronald Reagan got away with his age by his charm. McCain is neither charming or the next Ronald Reagan.

CHOSEN you are making an ass of yourself, along with all the McCain haters. Romney isn’t evil, McCain isn’t evil. Either one would be a far sight better as POTUS than Barak Obama.

Zbigniew Kazimierz Brzezinski. Obama’s National Security advisor. What else do we need to know? 444 days was enough for me.

Limerick on February 25, 2008 at 10:50 AM

And Obama’s top military advisor? Merrill “Tony” McPeak. A gold-plated, class A prick. He is hated by AF folks who served with him exactly the same way Army people hate Weaseley Clark.

Misspelled Weaseley the first time.

Exit question: Who else besides Mitt would jump in to try to fill the void? You don’t think…

Since we’re keeping hope alive, I noticed that Rudy’s website is still up. If McCain drops out, could he endorse his good buddy (who could also jump back in) and direct his pledged delegates to support him? Hmmm…

The Chosen One, your hatred for Mitt Romney is really off the wall. I read on some other threads that you are from one of the Carolina’s, North I believe. Is this hatred of Mitt coming from you because he is a Mormon? I think that is what is driving it, isn’t it.

cjs1943 on February 25, 2008 at 12:11 PM

I think it is only prudent for Romney to keep the door open, in the event something goes wrong with the McCain candidacy. We don’t want Obama to walk over the finish line if McCain falls down.

Sadly, THE CHOSEN ONE could not answer why Mitt Romney is evil because he obtained money legally, and morally but McCain is NOT evil because he obtained his money by adultery and then marrying his adulterous lover who is beyond rich.

I think he’s in his bathroom thinking about it.

I would have no problem with Romeney, if he would be a man and stand behind his moderate principles. He has hoodwinked a lot of folks here into believing he’s a conservative. He even tricked David Keene and all the old schoolers at the Conservative Union. I think it was here that I read the CU was having secret meeting with him and Luara Ingram minutes after dropping out of the race. Phony is too nice of a word for Mitt.
