Hot Air is proud to welcome blogger extraordinaire Ed Morrissey of Captain’s Quarters to the staff. He’ll start cross-posting here today and we’re opening up comment registration to help bring CQ members into the fold. (Update: comments now closed.) In the next few weeks, Ed will close down CQ and make Hot Air his exclusive home. (Update: Ed’s Hot Air e-mail address is ed@hotair.com)

Ed began blogging at Captain’s Quarters in 2003. During the past five years, his work has been published in the Washington Post, New York Post, New York Times, Weekly Standard, and other national publications. In 2007, Ed made the leap to full-time employment in New Media when he became political director for Blog Talk Radio. You can see all of his past work in the archives at Captain’s Quarters.

Ed has lived in Minnesota for more than ten years after leaving his native California. He and his wife have a son and daughter-in-law finishing their college education and a beautiful five-year-old granddaughter. He has a weekly radio show on Minnesota’s AM 1280 The Patriot every Saturday afternoon.

Ed has been a friend and kindred spirit since I entered the blogosphere. He brings keen political insights, boundless energy and optimism, and invaluable investigative skills/enterprise reporting to the team. His pioneering citizen journalism helped expose government corruption in Canada and brought down a rotten Canadian Liberal Party administration. He’s been the subject of moonbat cartoonist Ted Rall’s class bigotry and a target of Vanity Fair jerk James Wolcott’s snobbery. Ever the gentleman, Ed joked in response: “Success is when all the right people hate you.”

Hot Air now has two of the hardest working men in the blogosphere on board full-time– and one very lucky boss. As has been the case from launch, we’ll agree on many issues. But not all. We have an eclectic mix of conservative-to-libertarian perspectives, distinctive interests, life experiences, and styles. What unites Allah, Ed, and me: Hot Air’s company goal of informing, entertaining, and keeping you plugged in with piping hot blog commentary, headlines, political analysis, original reporting, video and other multimedia offerings all day, every day.

Learn. Enjoy. Laugh. Share. Vent. Mobilize. And always stay tuned.

Cap’n, I’ll follow you anywhere (even though I mostly lurk)!

Say, this ship is mighty spiffy, ain’t it? And the crew here to greet us is right nice.

Ought to make the change bearable.

I’ve been trying out my new sockpuppet on some of the other threads.

Does anyone know the optimum number of sockpuppets to have?

Hey Chakra man, it is good news.

Just made HotAir that little more indispensible.

Woo woot! Congrats Ed, Michelle and the rest of the Hot Air team.

I think we have a rival to the HuffPo.

Welcome Ed and welcome to me. I’ve been hoping to get registered to comment here since I started reading Hot Air 2 years ago.

doriangrey on February 25, 2008 at 7:07 PM

Welcome Ed, from a regular reader of both, and an occasional commenter here. Your writings are very good, and you’re a great addition here!

bikermailman on February 25, 2008 at 7:07 PM

Welcome Captain Ed, you’re a great addition to Hot Air. Now I’m going to have to go direct to the Day by Day site for my daily humor check!

F111Otter on February 25, 2008 at 7:11 PM

I never miss visiting “The Captain’s Blog,” check in at least three times a week! Even though I disagree with him from time to time, He’s a tad bit more Middle of the Road than I and I would venture to guess you as well, Michelle, His blog is Damn good and for the most part Square on!

Oh well, we can’t all be Perfect!!:)

LOL

I been reading Captain EDs blog for a while now and he is one of the best thinker we conservative have. Hot Air is now going to be even Hotter

joeyb1955 on February 25, 2008 at 7:36 PM

Instead of this Lower Half or Upper Half, how about just plain old full Admiral of the High Seas Michelle Malkin? :-).

HotAirJosef on February 25, 2008 at 5:21 PM

First off…Warmest welcome to Captain Ed and his readers/deck mates.

I was going to suggest a title of PoHA or FLoHA (Prez/First Lady of Hotair), however after I quick google search on those letters, I realized maybe that is not such a good idea.

Calling the boss “lazy”, in any language, will get a person banned.

Great to have all of the best in one place.

Isn’t there a presidential candidate that would find this helpful? (i.e. Conservatives coming together?)

SouthernGent, If it was you coming over to CQ, the folks would put ya up in the first class cabin and (at least) offer ya an electric toothbrush. That said, I hope most of us “newbie’s” are allowed to chew on the meat of liberal madness while we’re all at the same table.

Rovin on February 25, 2008 at 1:00 PM

There’s plenty to chew on that’s for sure. I like to chew them up, spit them out, then chew again. Of course we welcome you aboard!

Grab the tiller and aim for the stars.

As the mentor of modern political analysis Eric Arthur Blair put it:

Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.”

profitsbeard on February 26, 2008 at 1:23 AM

Normally, I would jump for joy here.

However, mainstream media conglomeration and consolidation has not improved the content and quality of political debate in America. In fact, it has concentrated the power of MSM gatekeepers and silenced independent opinion, which is detrimental to a free society.

And served us with little but the same-o, same-o bland, reconstituted AP/Reuters/MSNBC pap.

While I respect and enjoy Michelle’s work, I sometimes disagree with parts of her news-management style (which is my right), but since she owns this blog, it is her “press” that we are talking about. And so I go along. The beauty of the blogosphere is that if I didn’t particularly like Michelle’s blogs (HA and MM), on any given day, I could read someone else’s.

Therefore, I demur, slightly, at the universal joy that Captain Ed is joining Hot Air; not at the improvements he will undoubtedly bring here, but at the loss of his own independent voice in an very widely read and respected blog.

I believe that one of the strengths of the New Media is that it isn’t the “old media”, not only in that it doesn’t share the old media’s liberal ideology, but in the fact that it is independent and not in lockstep with each other. Consolidation, I fear, brings to the “new media” some of the weaknesses of the old.

I have no doubt that the work product of the good Cap’n will continue to be of high quality, with tightly reasoned opinion, sourced and fact-checked reporting. That is in his nature.

And while I certainly do not begrudge Michelle a “blogosphere empire”, I want there to continue to exist smaller, independent, unique, voices.

The new media is the “Mouse that Roared,” and I’m afraid ‘We, the People’ might lose something important if it morphs into a mirror image (the right hand image) of the MSM.

It may not come to that; I may be all wrong. I sincerely hope I’m wrong.

Michelle is to be commended for striving to improve her product.

georgej on February 26, 2008 at 1:23 AM

First post here at Hot Air. I’ll be honest and say that I prefer Captain Ed’s writing style over Allah’s and Michelle’s, so this will increase my visiting to HA.

I’m glad you opened this place up so the CQ folks could join up.

OmegaPaladin on February 26, 2008 at 5:17 AM

georgej on February 26, 2008 at 1:23 AM

Wow, do the horns and hide come with that bullshit? Step away from the pot vending machine.

If this site is too much of a meganormous media entity with only 3 journalists, then you should continue getting your news from bathroom walls.

It’s obvious to me that the HA staff works hard. I do not always agree with every post. But I appreciate about 99% of them. The line editing is fiendishly tight. The spin is highlighted and a balanced perspective is always considered.

I appreciate the tight-ship that’s being run at HotAir. I have no complaints about them getting by with a little help from their friends. And with friends like CQ, well ’nuff said.

Another step up for HotAir! Awesome.

Isn’t there some kind of anti-trust thingy that would stop all the best writers and brains ending up at the same place? [smiling…]

LaMonte on February 26, 2008 at 10:17 AM

Awesome.

I (heart) Hot Air.

Saltysam on February 26, 2008 at 10:38 AM

My biggest regret with this move comes because the Hot Air site is much more difficult to navigate than Captain’s Quarters, and its RSS feed is mostly useless (which would somewhat compensate for the first problem). I could look at my news aggregator (Newsgator) and see at a glance what the new stories on Captain’s Quarters would be. For Hot Air, however, there is nothing but (usually meaningless) headlines, together with a summary that simply says “read the story.”

I can’t find a way to simply read the blog here, and the home page only shows a fraction of what’s available.

Maybe I’m missing something (and who’s fault is that), but I foresee that most of Captain Ed’s work will be lost from view over here.
