Hot Air is proud to welcome blogger extraordinaire Ed Morrissey of Captain’s Quarters to the staff. He’ll start cross-posting here today and we’re opening up comment registration to help bring CQ members into the fold. (Update: comments now closed.) In the next few weeks, Ed will close down CQ and make Hot Air his exclusive home. (Update: Ed’s Hot Air e-mail address is ed@hotair.com)

Ed began blogging at Captain’s Quarters in 2003. During the past five years, his work has been published in the Washington Post, New York Post, New York Times, Weekly Standard, and other national publications. In 2007, Ed made the leap to full-time employment in New Media when he became political director for Blog Talk Radio. You can see all of his past work in the archives at Captain’s Quarters.

Ed has lived in Minnesota for more than ten years after leaving his native California. He and his wife have a son and daughter-in-law finishing their college education and a beautiful five-year-old granddaughter. He has a weekly radio show on Minnesota’s AM 1280 The Patriot every Saturday afternoon.

Ed has been a friend and kindred spirit since I entered the blogosphere. He brings keen political insights, boundless energy and optimism, and invaluable investigative skills/enterprise reporting to the team. His pioneering citizen journalism helped expose government corruption in Canada and brought down a rotten Canadian Liberal Party administration. He’s been the subject of moonbat cartoonist Ted Rall’s class bigotry and a target of Vanity Fair jerk James Wolcott’s snobbery. Ever the gentleman, Ed joked in response: “Success is when all the right people hate you.”

Hot Air now has two of the hardest working men in the blogosphere on board full-time– and one very lucky boss. As has been the case from launch, we’ll agree on many issues. But not all. We have an eclectic mix of conservative-to-libertarian perspectives, distinctive interests, life experiences, and styles. What unites Allah, Ed, and me: Hot Air’s company goal of informing, entertaining, and keeping you plugged in with piping hot blog commentary, headlines, political analysis, original reporting, video and other multimedia offerings all day, every day.

Learn. Enjoy. Laugh. Share. Vent. Mobilize. And always stay tuned.

Welcome, Ed! You’re a strong successor to Bryan and I look forward to your posts. Keep giving props to DaybyDay when you’re able, I liked the fact that you always had it front and center at CQ.

To all the other newbie seamen, here’s your toothbrush. Now get to scrubbing the HotAir deck!

SouthernGent, If it was you coming over to CQ, the folks would put ya up in the first class cabin and (at least) offer ya an electric toothbrush. That said, I hope most of us “newbie’s” are allowed to chew on the meat of liberal madness while we’re all at the same table.

Michelle Malkin…thank you, thank you, thank you. I’ve been waiting sooooooooooo long for your open registration. Now I can add my two cents!

hoi polloi on February 25, 2008 at 1:18 PM

I am greatly honored and humbled that after two years of watching and reading the Malkin Corporation’s kick-a**, killer app for conservatives called HotAir.com I finally can post comments. So thank you, Madame Malkin, C-E-O :-). As the Jews would say, you are a mensch.

That said, I will miss Bryan’s insights – especially as he served America in the Air Force – and wish him all the best with Laura Ingraham. Hopefully the CQ-HotAir merger will work best for all and as the cliche goes: make lemonade from lemons :-).

Of course, speaking of mergers, there’s an acquisition I hope can be made soon of Atlas Shrugs and its Maverick News Media cousin. All the best and thanks again HotAir.com!!!!!!!!

Redteam on February 25, 2008 at 2:47 PM

Yay! Oh noos. This is wrong! This is just fine. I fear this consolidation of the media. Localization is simplification. I hate removing favorite places from my bookmarks. Saves on clicking. Long thoughtful articles should never mix with snippets and mere linkages. Content should vary in depth and length. I prefer my thinkers kept separated. It’s good to have things in a central place. Various styles are jarring. Variety is the spice. Format conformity is fascist. Continuity is esthetically pleasing. But who’s going to be the boss? Hierarchy is no concern.

Oh dear, I seem to be conflicted. Cheers and welcome.

I’ve always thought that Ed’s take on Jonny Mac was sharp and sensible, and it will be great to read more of that here.

Oh, and don’t worry about “Special Ed.” As an educator, I’ve been told that “everybody’s special.” Of course, if everybody’s special, then nobody’s special–oh dear, now I’m conflicted too…

eaglesnesthome on February 25, 2008 at 3:35 PM

nice e pluribus unum’ing going on here

billypaintbrush on February 25, 2008 at 3:37 PM

Pop question:

Okay, everybody’s happy that Ed’s aboard.

Who was the saddest person upon hearing the news?

Since Ed’s words will be the same over here, what’s the one thing we’ll miss most with Captain’s Quarters’ absence?

Day by Day.

I imagine Chris Muir wasn’t pleased with the news at all. The thing is, while I see it on a lot of sites, it’s usually bunched up into one frame and you have to (gasp) manually scoot your way through it. Not only is it a bother, but something gets lost when you can’t read it in one swoop. It cost Ed a ton of some of his site’s most valuable real estate, but he gets credit for displaying it correctly.

I’m sure Chris knows all the above, and was probably crushed to hear he was losing one of the few full-panel displays. A lot of bloggers subscribe to the strip, but it was probably being read more on CQ.

As far as Ed coming over here, I appear to be the one voice of dissent. I was truly shocked and disheartened at the news. I imagine some of the CQ gang was, too. Ed’s going from being a beacon of intellectual light to a site where they use Dude as the headline for every fourth article?

Is the HotAir crowd ready to read nineteen paragraphs on the inner workings of the Pakistani government?

Ed’s an essayist, and we wouldn’t have it any other way, but what we like here are two insightful paragraphs of lead-in, then cut to the video. Putting someone who writes in depth into the mix seems a bit odd, but I suppose Michelle feels it’ll add another dimension to the site; pushing it in the direction of RealClearPolitics.

Most of all, though, I was sad to see another single blogger go down. We lost Dean Barnett last summer, then Ace turned his place into Fark II, and now TigerHawk’s got three guest bloggers, one of them quite active, and is headed down the same path of non-identity. Worse, all three of them love writing about the most boring subject in the Central Galaxy — economics — so, over the past few months, the site’s gone from being “Tiger’s blog” to “The TigerHawk Economic (and sometimes political) Co-Blogorium.”

Hmph.

On the other hand, Ed’s gone through a lot over the past few years. There’s his wife’s medical problems, the time the blog takes up, the pressure of having to be smart on a daily basis, dealing with spammers, and all the behind-the-scenes things it takes to keep a web site running — and that’s not counting all of life’s normal little nightmares, like equipment failure, car problems, leaky roofs, and all the rest.

So, although I feel the RW blogosphere has taken a real loss, I’m happy that Ed will be able to kick back a little, leave the driving to Greyhound, and revisit the joy that caused him to get into blogging in the first place.

Happy to have you here, Ed. I hope you’ll arrange to have Chris Muir’s Day By Day featured at Hot Air, it’s the first thing I always looked at when visiting your own site (which I’ll miss).
