Good News: Ralph Nader Running for President; Update: Video added; Update: “Really unfortunate,” says Hillary

posted at 11:56 am on February 24, 2008 by Patterico

From the Washington Post:

Consumer advocate Ralph Nader said on Sunday that he is launching another long shot independent campaign for president of the United States.

Nader, who will turn 74 this week, announced his presidential bid on NBC’s “Meet the Press” saying that neither the Democrats nor the Republicans are addressing the problems facing Americans.

The Messiah can’t be too happy, given that many Democrats think Nader cost Al Gore the presidency:

Nader also ran for president in 2000 when he got about 2.7 percent of the national vote as the Green Party candidate and played a role in deciding the final presidential outcome. He also ran as an independent in 2004 and got only a tiny fraction of the vote.

Many Democrats blame Nader’s participation in the close race between Democrat Al Gore and Republican George Bush in 2000 for tipping the election in favor of Bush. They believe that but for Nader’s name on the ballot in Florida, Gore would have been the clear winner and president today instead of Bush.

Me, I doubt the race will be close enough for Nader to make a difference this time. But in January, Allahpundit seemed to have some hope (if a conservative is allowed to use that word) that the “mangy old Clydesdale” Nader could shake up the race a little.

At the very least, it can’t hurt to have old Ralph in the mix as an allegedly “authentic” voice, detailing Obama’s weak record. Allah quoted Nader in January as saying this:

“His record in the Senate is pretty mediocre,” Nader said. “His most distinctive characteristic is the extent to which he censors himself. He hasn’t performed as a really progressive first-term senator would.”

Yeah, we could use a little more of that.

Update (AP): Here’s the clip. Substantively, a short hop to Obama’s left. Stylistically, grand canyon. Good lord.

Update (AP): Nader won’t do a lick of damage to Obama, who’s liberal enough to please all but the greenest greens and charismatic enough to make Nader seem decrepit by comparison. He’d be dangerous for Hillary, though. And she knows it.

Clinton was unaware, until questioned about by reporters, that Nader had announced Sunday morning on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he had decided to enter the 2008 race, and was clearly surprised at the news.

“Well that’s really unfortunate. I remember when he did this before. It did not turn out very well for anybody, most especially our country,” she said. “This time I hope it doesn’t hurt anybody. I hope it’s kind of a passing fancy that people don’t take too seriously.”

I was hearing the rumors, and now foxnew.com has it up. What else can they bring in… The Goracle? Now that would shake up B.O. and Hillary.

Not a big spoiler if Obama’s the nominee, huge spoiler if Clinton is (alternative place for Obama true believers to go.)

Mr. UnsafeAtAnySpeed is dead in the water…

2000 Election….2.7% of the vote
2004 Election….0.3% of the vote

The Dems blame him as much for GWB & Iraq as anyone. He might get 1% of Oregon and Washington but that’s it.

Limerick on February 24, 2008 at 12:02 PM

Consumer advocate? He never helped me buy a damn thing. Mangy old clydesdale is so much more accurate. These tired newspapers men/ladies haven’t had an original thought in 40 years, along with Nader.

I can’t see many glassy eyed donks applauding Nader when he blows his nose, but I could be wrong. We’ll see how aggressive he is on the attack,..might get a few good soundbytes out of it.

I think McCain would welcome a crowd. It already worked for him once this year.

Greenhorn on February 24, 2008 at 12:15 PM

Not a spoiler this time though, as Barry is even farther left than Nader. I guess some disgruntled centrist Hillary supporters might vote for Nader, but I’d rather they went for McCain.

Unlike Gore, Obama can spare a point or two to Nader. It doesn’t signify.

Is it possible that he could be shooting for a veep spot? Long-shot, I know, but this election is a turkey-#$*% enough already.

bbz123 on February 24, 2008 at 12:18 PM

Well, this election season ain’t boring, I’ll give it that. I’m waiting for Nanny Bloomberg to throw in his hat. I bet he could get more votes than Nader.

meep on February 24, 2008 at 12:18 PM

Nader is a great vent for all the hard to super left. He doesn’t have much traction with moderate and liberal left, but many greens and anti-corporate types love them some Ralph. I’m happy that he’ll peel some away from the dems. He’ll also throw rocks at the Dem nominee and the Dem Party, and that’s good enough for me. I’m going to send all my recyclables to Ralph’s HQ. That should be enough to alternatively fuel his campaign.

malan89 on February 24, 2008 at 12:27 PM

This doesn’t have anything to do with Nader, but I need to get this off my chest.

I have a friend who calls herself a Republican. But she’s voting for Obama this year because she’s pro-socialized healthcare, anti-military, anti-Israel, against big business. And, oh yeah, she thinks she’s “morally obligated” to vote for Obama. Sad thing is, I don’t think her story is unique in the Republican party.

Ugh.

profitsbeard on February 24, 2008 at 1:06 PM

Um, amkun, these issues identify her as one of those “life-long republicans for Obama” that the NY Times et al trot out. So far, every single one has proven to be a person who has donated to democrats or worked for liberal groups in the past.

These issues would pretty much guarantee that this person has never voted GOP:

she’s pro-socialized healthcare, anti-military, anti-Israel, against big business. And, oh yeah, she thinks she’s “morally obligated” to vote for Obama.

I nominate Ralph for Time Magazine’s man person of the year.

(Have to be PC in that rag now.)

Texas Nick 77 on February 24, 2008 at 1:32 PM

Nader will probably not get too many votes, but he’ll help the GOP nominee by slapping Obama’s hand back down every time he tries to reach toward the center.

Big S on February 24, 2008 at 1:38 PM

Nader won’t do a lick of damage to Obama, who’s liberal enough to please all but the greenest greens and charismatic enough to make Nader seem decrepit by comparison.

Well on the war Obama is vulnerable. He has staked out two completely different positions in front of to different crowds. When on MTP he would not commit to pulling out of Iraq when asked directly. But in front of his own supporters he has repeatedly said he would pull out immediately.

Then there is that fact that he does not want to pull out but simply move troops to Afghanistan and not curb military spending. Those two positions put him at odds with a voter predisposed to voting for a Nader if given the opportunity.

If Nader worked California hard on those two points there are quite a few people who just could not say no.

True. Obama will have to tack toward the middle in the general. Will he lose the devotion of the Obamacans? Never. Will he convince the middle that he respects the 2nd Amendment, and won’t make us look like a bunch of limp wristed wusses in Iraq? Probably not, not with Nader on his back.

I just found this analysis from Captain’s Quarters which makes a lot of sense to me.

How much impact will Nader have this time? Probably none at all. Unless Hillary Clinton pulls off a miracle, the Naderites of 2000 have aligned themselves enthusiastically with Barack Obama. Having Nader attack him from the Left won’t hurt Obama’s prospects in the middle, where he needs to draw more heavily than John McCain.

He goes on to say that Bloomberg poses more of a threat to Barry.

Won’t make a lick of difference. If anything, it’ll make it harder for the right to paint Sen Obama as a left wing radical. The Senator from Illinois will look downright moderate compared to both Sen McCain and Mr. Nader, despite efforts to link him with 60’s leftwing radical groups.

You’re a passing fancy that people don’t take too seriously.

Patterico’s nuts. No one exists to Obama’s left, unless you’re listening to his I-Am-the-One-You’ve-Been-Waiting-For rhetoric, and not actually reviewing his Most-Liberal-Senator record and his Domestic Terrorist Chicago backers.

I can’t think of a reason why a radical leftist voter would prefer a 74 year old nutjob like Lord Nader to a 46 year nutjob like Obama, who looks better, acts electable, is supported by the furthest left whackos, and votes like Nader.

To your point Danish, I go to C Q also. I find myself, frequently, taking what’s said there with the proverbial grain of salt. I believe, with BHO being a relatively new player with so much baggage, when the Dem base starts to see what IS going to come out of the GOP, being the frail group they are, they will go back to what they think will work and some will vote on THEIR principles. If the Clinton’s don’t pull this off and they ARE stuck with BHO, I believe this is going to be laughable. BHO makes the Clintons look like they came out of a monastery. Also, it will make people like me vote in more than local, county and state races. Remember this post. One way or the other. No one exists to Obama’s left…

Jaibones on February 24, 2008 at 3:13 PM

That could be true technically (I think there are people further to the left of Obama, not that that makes Obama any less desirable), but it doesn’t matter. What matters is how Obama portrays himself, and he will portray himself as a centrist to the right of Nader.

It doesn’t matter if nobody votes for Nader. His mere entrance in the race will make Obama look like a centrist precisely because there would be no reason for Nader to run against the more politically gifted Obama unless Nader’s policy positions were different.

Nader = Here comes the Socialism!

- Adopt single payer national health insurance
- Cut the huge, bloated, wasteful military budget
- No to nuclear power, solar energy first
- Aggressive crackdown on corporate crime and corporate welfare
- Open up the Presidential debates
- Adopt a carbon pollution tax
- Reverse U.S. policy in the Middle East
- Impeach Bush/Cheney
- Repeal the Taft-Hartley anti-union law
- Adopt a Wall Street securities speculation tax
- Put an end to ballot access obstructionism
- Work to end corporate personhood

Why is Ralph running? Hitlary and Osama are not socialist enough.

Poptech on February 24, 2008 at 4:45 PM

Hitlary and Osama are not socialist enough.

Oh they’re quite socialist enough – will be funny to see a competition developing between them to see who can outdo the other. Hussein’s global tax, increased stealth taxes, cuts to the military, surrender in Iraq, socialised healthcare etc. are all well on the way. Socialism is back in a big way in the USA.

Go Nader go! Best news for the GOP so far this month.

Pax americana on February 24, 2008 at 5:30 PM

It’s good to see that the left has a 3-legged stool too. I was beginning to think it was only the Republicans. Their three legs are Mao (see Hillary and her fashion chic), Che’ (nice posters Obama), and Marx (Nader, the cranky old one.) Maybe these three legs will split just like the right did. Hopefully this will blunt some of their agenda. My guess is that it won’t. Like previous posters, I’m concerned most with Obama. He utilizes a un-substantive rhetoric which keys on emotion and feeling. He is slipping class warfare and big government memes into his sugary coated dialogue. His campaign illustrates why I am so thankful we live in a republican form of government. Mass rule in a true democracy would have obliterated this all by now. Hopefully we can get rational people into the legislative branch to offset any silliness these campaigns are bound to bring.

Clarity of vision!

Nader waits till late in season to again enter the race for POTUS in order to keep himself relevant (not) and known to the younger (Pepsi) generation that he used to represent once upon a time. This time, his wish may also be the VP slot with Obama, supposedly giving the no-record Senator a record. But Nader isn’t the “change” Obama wants hanging on his coat-tails.

thekingtut on February 25, 2008 at 10:33 AM

This is just precious. Delicious even.

Remember- there are some hardcore leftist Dems who think that Obama is too conservative, and something of a sellout for his talk of “reaching across the isle”. Some anti-war types also don’t think he’s anti-war enough because he won’t immediately pull all the troops out of Iraq.

This is going to be a close race (sorry, Patterico), and 1% of the vote pulled exclusively from the Dems could have an impact… as the Dems are well aware of after the 2000 “stolen” election.

“Well that’s really unfortunate. I remember when he did this before. It did not turn out very well for anybody, most especially our country,” she said.

What rights do Dems saying that it is not good for a 3rd party to run to could gain some ground? It was okay in ‘92 and ‘96 when it affected the GOP, but when it affects the Dems, they act like that it is bad for democracy.

I think it is great for democracy, and I would not be opposed to a conservative ruuning in a 3rd party. I think it is good for our nation to have a discussion of the issues, and if a 3rd party candidate wins the election,( which I do think will happen in the future) it will really shake up congress.

You never know — Nader could be a danger to Obama. There’s a lot of bitterness between Hillary & Obama, & if Obama wins, some of the Hillary supporters are not going to be happy. A few of them might vote for Obama out of spite.

cf on February 25, 2008 at 1:52 PM

Obviously, I meant they might vote for Nader.

Many Democrats blame Nader’s participation in the close race

Unfortunately, they really blame President Bush.

Blame anybody else but themselves, cause they’re blameless.

desertdweller on February 25, 2008 at 3:04 PM

All right! Let’s hope nader can get a full 10% this time and keep Hussein out of the white house.

I watched Meet The Press on Sunday, to hear Nader announce. If you listen to his math on independents and their satisafaction with the candidates it actually hurts McCain more.
Gryphon716 on February 25, 2008 at 12:58 PM

I seriously doubt that many “independents” who would otherwise vote for McCain are going to leapfrog over Obama to the left and vote for Nader. If anything, he’d draw some votes from Obama out of frustration that he’s not calling for impeachment and an immediate end to the war.

This is the most amusing thing to happen to this election season. I can’t wait to see the Dhims lose it when Ralph spoils their dreams again.

Run Ralph Run!

I was hearing the rumors, and now foxnew.com has it up. What else can they bring in… The Goracle? Now that would shake up B.O. and Hillary.

upinak on February 24, 2008 at 12:00 PM

I do wonder about the possibility of Gore’s late entry into the race, if Obama implodes.

Kralizec on February 25, 2008 at 7:34 PM

Nader 2008: Because there just weren’t enough candidates in the race who didn’t have a snowball’s chance of getting elected.

I loved it over the weekend when Fox News showed a glum-looking Nader and noted, “He IS smiling…” He’s the anti-Obama, charisma-wise.

But he ain’t gonna get elected running on “The Audacity of Mope.”

The nadir of Democrat “hope”.

Go Ralph! (You crack me up.)

Saltysam on February 26, 2008 at 1:33 AM

Nader is only Running so that He can throw bombs at the Republican and Obama can keep promising Sugar Coated Rainbows..

Such BS..

Such BS..

Chakra Hammer on February 26, 2008 at 1:37 AM

I agree. He does need a lot of Hillary/McCain democrats to win this thing, though, don’t you think? Or do you think he’ll win this thing on “energized youth”, “lockstep union members” and “dope smoking AARP” votes alone?
