Planned Parenthood of Kansas Must Turn Over Records

A Planned Parenthood clinic in Overland Park, Kansas, is under suspicion of violating several Kansas laws. 107 charges were filed by a Kansas DA (formerly Kansas’ Attorney General) Phill Kline, who sounds like a really cool guy. The Overland Park clinic and Phill Kline go way back–they’ve been tangling since at least 2005, when Kline was Attorney General of Kansas.

Today it looks Kline is about to get another bite at them:

A grand jury issued a subpoena to the Comprehensive Health in Overland Park clinic last month demanding the records of 16 patients. The clinic has been battling Johnson County District Attorney Phill Kline, an anti-abortion crusader, over whether the subpoena should be enforced.

After a hearing over the dispute Friday in Johnson County District Court, an attorney for the clinic, Pedro Irigonegaray, said it would turn over records for 16 patients that pertain to two restrictions on abortions under Kansas law. He said it would resolve the dispute.

One restriction mandates that the clinic notify a parent or guardian when a minor seeks an abortion. Another imposes a 24-hour waiting period before an abortion and requires the clinic to provide information to a patient about the procedure and other medical issues.

I’m glad someone is looking into Kansas’ abortion industry. It seems especially slipshod. On the other hand, maybe it’s quite typical–and we just know more about the situation in Kansas because of the efforts of people like Phill Kline.

Whoosh, for a moment I was afraid you were going to offer me a beer… :P It’s not them I don’t care for, its their genre of music. They are very very good at what they do. Good enough for me to enjoy it when someone else plays it, but not quite good enough for me to purchase it or download it myself. Like I said, its not them per say, its the genre.

doriangrey on February 23, 2008 at 8:59 PM

dorian…

That’s the rub isn’t it. Me, I believe that the nano-second that the little fella completes his mission, the deal is sealed. I’ve yet to find anyone who can tell me that the product of that completed mission will be a giraffe, elephant, leopard, or snapping turtle. I think the end product only comes out one way.

Then my ‘keep the Fed’s outta my face’ self kicks in. I lean toward it being a States issue the same way I believe that the death penalty should be a states issue. There are plenty of people who don’t think that way. This issue isn’t going to have a beginning-of-the-end until someone figures out where that beginning is.

Limerick on February 23, 2008 at 9:00 PM

Constitutional issue? or States issue? For or against, right or wrong, pro or con, Choice or Life, it would seem until we decide who the hell has jurisdiction over this issue it will never be solved.

Limerick on February 23, 2008 at 8:48 PM

Great point.
I am very much a Federalist. I would like to see the majority of social issues left in the hands of the states. It would lead to some states having policies I disagree with, but I believe it would be best for our country. Besides, as it stands now, we will never make any gains in slowing the rate of abortions on the federal level.

I’m glad someone is looking into Kansas’ abortion industry. It seems especially slipshod.

O’Reilly, for all his faults, did a great job of covering the Kansas abortion industry, and “Tiller the Killer”. Read all about it here.

Here’s a little Karma - A flashback to where the same Planned Parenthood group under discussion in this thread tried to sue O’Reilly and Kline.

Except when a few days after conception the person becomes two or more people. It is hard to think of a zygote as an individual being if it is still capable of becoming multiple beings.

I probably agree with your Federalist point of view though.

Without a doubt the biggest Pandora’s box on the table. I approach it as a ‘Me or We’ issue. I can’t go for the ‘me’ argument. Then someone throws the ‘what if it was your wife’s life or the babies life’ argument at me. That’s when I have to open another beer and hash it all over again.

Like I said…..biggest Pandora’s box on the table.

No, you can make laws to protect something of value. Is it a being or is it a potential being is the question that twinning raises.

Telling people that sex is only for reproduction reduces them to animals. Communicating love raises us above the level of beasts.

Navel-gazing seems to be more a masturbatory metaphor, but hey whatever two people do behind closed doors is their business. If they stare at each others’ belly buttons while doing it, then have fun.

dedalus on February 23, 2008 at 9:46 PM

It’s not about what 2 people do behind closed doors when there is another person (in utero) involved. Everyone knows that there are 143 methods of birth control on the market. Why is it too much to ask people to use just one or two? It’s not 1973 anymore. And it is an industry - believe me. No one ever talked me out of having an abortion when I had one. I merely scheduled the appt., paid my co-pay ( $10 at the time) and killed my child. No counseling, no concern, just get me in and get me out. I’ve never regretted anything so much in my entire life. All of my friends were “supportive”. To this day when I see a new OB I have to tell her that I have been pregnant and what I did, and I always tell her/him that “It’s the biggest mistake I ever made.” They always reply the same way, ” I hear that a lot.” THAT’S what kids should know. That’s what they should learn before they have sex. My life would be different alright. I would have less regret, and I would have a child that I know I would love and be able to take care of and support. At the time I couldn’t see that. But my life is so different, now. I am successful and have a husband who would love to have cared for that child. Killing that child sure didn’t make my life easier.

It made me believe in God. God gave me a miracle. I am unable to have children, (not because of the abortion,) yet I - through what I felt was a “mistake” at the time - I got pregnant. If I had just done what I felt was right in my heart, ( had the child) I would have the child that I know I could love and want and care for. But at the time I could only think of the inconvenience. That child was a miracle, and I threw it away because of “inconvenience” and a lack of trust and faith in God. You may not believe in God, but at the very least one should consider that a child is a miracle and inconvenient or not, it could be the best thing that ever happens in your life because you never know how your life wil turn out.

mred on February 23, 2008 at 10:24 PM

Every government makes decisions about who is and isn’t a citizen, and thereby deserves full protection under its laws. That isn’t a conspicuous charactaristic of Fascism.

Before 1967 abortion was illegal in all 50 states, was the United States Fascistic at that time? In 1973 it became legal in all 50. Did the United States become Fascistic at that point? My position is that the U.S. wasn’t and isn’t because of this one issue.

At some point during the nine months something that started as a fertilized egg becomes a person, an individual citizen deserving of rights. Since that point is certain to be debated by clergy, scientists and philosophers I’d rely on a Federalist approach rather than the courts.

Ummm, possible because I’m not a metalhead from LA… I live in San Diego Ca, not LA, although I wasn’t born here, I was born in Yakima Washington. I love the hard rock early metal of the mid 70’s to early 90’s. But don’t care for speed death thrash metal.

I’m a classically train pianist with a degree in music theory. Although I haven’t played piano in at least 15 years. What I like is pop hard rock, Jazz Rock fusion and Classical rock fusion and some metal. So obviously my taste trend towards Joe Satriani, Yngiwe Malmsteen, Guns and Roses Metallica, Van Halen, Al Di Meola, Return to Forever, George Benson, Aerosmith, Blue Oyster Cult, Led Zeppelin and Ted Nuggent, and of course Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Wagner, Tchaikovsky and Rockmaninov. Well there is a lot more but I think you get the point.

So it is ok for 50 states to ban abortion?

You’d have to ask the voters and representatives in each of the 50 states–in New York State, they wouldn’t. That is the alternative to having 9 Justices or the big federal government decide. At some point between conception and when the child turns 18 one of the branches of the government needs to step in.

dedalus on February 24, 2008 at 12:02 AM

I was born in Yakima

You have my sympathies. ;)

dKOS, Hot Air armchair jerks with a cause and who can’t argue.

Yes. It is much better to throw stink bombs than to argue your own point then claim others can’t argue.

Sue on February 24, 2008 at 12:06 AM

Penis face.

Dude, it this is the level of your discourse, than please go somewhere else. HotAir is a civil community, not a ghetto gutter.

Former Attorney General Kline:

“Democracy without virtue is two wolves and a sheep deciding what’s for dinner”

I like that. Thanks for the link See-Dubya.

I wonder what “hope” Obama will offer the unborn children scheduled for abortion?

Murdered at 14 years gov’t not ok. Murdered at 0:01 seconds gov’t ok. You all are logic central.

Saltysam on February 24, 2008 at 12:33 AM

Hey see-dubya, how about some moderation here.

doriangrey on February 24, 2008 at 12:34 AM

I’m a conservative on most issues, but I’m a liberal on abortion.

Saltysam on February 24, 2008 at 12:35 AM

I believe in the liberally extending human rights to the unborn.

Saltysam on February 24, 2008 at 12:37 AM

Woooaah. Maybe a little to much sauce.

I’ll write that again.

I’m a conservative on most issues, but I’m a liberal on abortion.

I believe in the liberal extension of human rights to the unborn.

Saltysam on February 24, 2008 at 12:39 AM

but I’m a liberal on abortion.

What does being a liberal on abortion mean? You support Roe v Wade? You support partial-birth abortions? You support abortions for 13 year olds without parental notification? There are all kinds of liberal positions on abortion. Mine would be considered liberal by some conservatives, but conservative by some liberals.

Sue on February 24, 2008 at 12:39 AM

What does being a liberal on abortion mean?

Nevermind. It means you have a sense of humor. ::grin::

You kids play nice.

Don’t make me come in there.

see-dubya on February 24, 2008 at 12:43 AM

Sue on February 24, 2008 at 12:41 AM

But, in all reality, that is what being a liberal on abortion should mean.

Classic liberalism would mean extending rights to people.

doriangrey on February 24, 2008 at 12:34 AM

Oh I see. You want some higher power to make your life better.
Yea you are a Liberal Fascist.

mred on February 24, 2008 at 12:45 AM

Yeah, mred.

I’ve read some of your posts.

I’m probably closer to your point of view, but have a little self respect. Anything that can be said with vulgarity can be said better with creative language skills.

Clean it up.

It’s whatever the states work out. My guess is that all states would continue to outlaw infanticide–so in the birth canal, maybe OK; out of the birth canal, never OK. Other states would push it back closer to conception or implantation.

Logically, that isn’t where I’d draw the line. I’d probably put it at around the development of vital organs and brain activity. But, my points have been more about where the government should be involved.

dedalus on February 24, 2008 at 12:46 AM

Gotchya Sue!

Yeah. I bit. ::grin::

Saltysam on February 24, 2008 at 12:43 AM

The Classical Liberals who founded the country didn’t extend full rights to blacks or women. They weren’t liberally handing out rights out to all the people who were born, let alone unborn.

Saltysam on February 24, 2008 at 12:59 AM

doriangrey on February 23, 2008 at 11:52 PM

Please stop calling TOOL “speed metal”, they are psychodelic hard rock and Maynard their lead singer basically sings half hard with his classical influences in there. The whole band is similar to Phish in the fact that they have heavy classical and broad musical influences. Your talkin’ Slayer and all that garbage.
