Maverick to media: You’re sleeping on the couch tonight

posted at 1:09 pm on February 22, 2008 by Allahpundit

Via the Busters, it’s sad when marriages end:

John McCain’s campaign plane is usually a pretty jovial place to be. The senator, his family and aides sit in the first few rows, while the press is stationed in the back of the plane. On most days, the two sides openly mingle, with reporters sometimes able to sit close so close to the front that they can hear McCain and his aides talking strategy.

But in the aftermath of today’s New York Times story looking at McCain’s dealings with a Washington lobbyist, the mood is decidedly different. Before McCain boarded his plane, reporters were asked to sit farther back than usual on the plane. And when McCain finally boarded the plane, he failed to offer his usual wave at reporters and opted to quickly take his seat. During the flight, the cabin was unusually quiet, save a few quick discussions McCain had with top aides Steve Schmidt and Mark Salter.

Eh, I think it’s only for one night. Exit question: If you’re a major newspaper looking for a fair, balanced, objective take on St. John’s coziness with lobbyists, to whom do you turn? Exit answer: Why, to a former employee of Chuck Schumer, Joe Biden, and John Conyers, of course.

Blowback

Reminds me of the “Man Song”.

I’ll drink and watch sports whenever I want… and get in trouble.

I’ll come home when I’m good and ready… to sleep on the couch.

I read this post and think how ignorant most people are about politics in general, and accept whatever the MSM spoon feeds them. How many people that heard about McCain and lobbyists know the charge is from an employee of the left…

We conservative, informed blog readers need to reach out and inform our fellow citizens.

We need some good movement conservative leadership to fill the void.

I hear you get real bad frostbite when you’re strapped to the tail section stabilizer over long flights.

Give the press a sweater and an oxygen mask. Let them ride in the cargo bay.

Well, that honeymoon ended quickly didn’t it?

They’re finding legs on this story.

I read the story and it seems one point in his litany of defenses was incorrect. But I do find it interesting that Newsweek jumped in and dug around trying to find a reason to prove the NYT’s story.

Liberal bias? What bias?

amerpundit on February 22, 2008 at 1:36 PM

There goes their access after his inauguration.

THE CHOSEN ONE on February 22, 2008 at 1:37 PM

Oh, he’ll take them back. Just like a woman who forgives her cheating man time after time after time because, “He says he’s sorry. He needs me, and I love hiiiiiiiim…”

DrMagnolias on February 22, 2008 at 1:41 PM

So what did McPain think, that he was going to get a free ride from the MSM? The moment he became the front runner, in the eyes of the MSM, he threw a sign around his neck that read FRESH MEAT!

Exactly. Still, I guess the realization that the media is not his friend comes better late than never.

Yep. And perhaps he saw who circled the wagons around him when he came under attack. It sure as hell wasn’t the media and otherwise-Obama-supporting Indies.

amerpundit on February 22, 2008 at 1:36 PM

Doesn’t matter. This will neutralize Obama’s goof on the military weapons last night, because it goes to the heart of McCain’s argument for CFR, makes him look like a hypocrite and makes better press.

Well, McCain has seen Campaign Finance Reform come down on him with threats and warnings, and now his base, the media, has turned on him. All we need now is for amnesty to come back to bite him and we’ll have a trifecta.

This is another example of a politician who lived in a bubble of arrogance for too long. This is sort of like the beginning of the unfolding of the denouement of a Shakespearian tragedy, the moral of which frequently is:

What goes around, comes around.

Is it me or are John and Cindy starting to look alike?

RobCon on February 22, 2008 at 2:22 PM

Regardless of anybody’s opinion of McCain, it would be nice to have the media called on the carpet. I wouldn’t be surprised if McCain, who isn’t afraid to speak his mind, has a touch of Cheney in him. Bush has been far to nice considering he has been a punching bag to the media while offering virtually zero defense other than through the press secretary.

Tony Snow stood up to some of the clowns at press briefings but Bush should have ripped the Slimes a new one and not let up after they disclosed national security secrets. Of course that’s just one example.

I understand the media unfortunately still has some ability to make or break politicians but the White House also carries some power. I would love to see the media taken to the wood shed and just maybe McCain will realize they are NOT on his side and do just that.

libhater on February 22, 2008 at 2:24 PM

Man, Cindy is giving the death stare there, huh? I’d willingly sleep on the couch if I were in his shoes. She may just pull a Lorena Bobbit.

Which is why Senators don’t get elected Pres. Geeze, we don’t have much choice this year, do we. (Another argument for Romney !)

stenwin77 on February 22, 2008 at 2:38 PM

stenwin77,

Yeah, I have thought about the fact that we have a choice of senators right now. Neither of them has had to live with the results of their policy implementation.

It is really a good thing to have some executive experience before you run for president. Your actions will probably have consequences that you have to deal with much more quickly.

This behavior strikes me as that of someone guilty of the charges. If innocent, it would be fun to laugh at the NYT’s public foolishness.

Kini on February 22, 2008 at 1:21 PM

But what if you are a flea?

Hillary’s biggest comeback came when she staged the tears

McCain had chumped a passle of conservatives in the primaries. The best way to prove he is One with the Right is to let the Left slap him around a bit.

The game is ‘Good Cop – Bad Cop’

The RNC had the letter in my mail this morning, sobbing like a sister about the way the NYT was treating old John. We were supposed to feel the pain together and then I send money. A bit too slick. uh-uh.

I won’t say they are amateurs because McCain won. I will say they are not subtle

Any one see the late night shows last night?

This is going to be around longer than Craig’s wide stance.

If McCain is not smart enough to know that the MSM would turn on him like this then Idon’t think he is smart enough to be President.

entagor on February 22, 2008 at 3:22 PM

My point was that McCain cozied up to the Times and liberals.
A smack from the NYSlimes would happen anyway. McCain’s lesson is that you cannot think liberals will befriend you. No matter how nice you are. No matter how friendly you get with Feingold, Kennedy, Lieberman and how hands across the isle you are. No matter how loosely cohesive and tightly you are being a conservative Republican. You are a Conservative Republican and therefore the enemy in the pens of the NYSlimes’s.

Kini on February 22, 2008 at 4:57 PM

McCain is getting a dose of how real conservatives get treated on a regular basis. He’s not used to it. It’s rather nice to see him on the recieving end of a backstabber. He’s been backstabbing conservatives for many years, and a little payback is a welcome change. Even if it’s from the sleazebags at the NY Times. I hope he learns a lesson and realizes whose team he’s on. I doubt he will. He’ll be sucking back up to them in no time at all.
