IAEA: You know, Iran might not be telling us the whole truth about its weapons program

Even Russia, Iran’s partner and their biggest ally at the UN on this subject, has lost patience. Expect a third round of feeble UN sanctions soon, commensurate with the fact that weaponization is a red herring and of little consequence at this point. As HA readers already know, building a bomb isn’t the hard part; the hard part is learning how to enrich uranium to bomb-grade levels, and that process continues apace. Worrying about whether their program is dormant or already up and running is like worrying about whether the gun pointing at you is loaded or about to be loaded. You’ve got a tiny bit more time with the latter but it’s the moment of truth either way.
Since 2005, the I.A.E.A. has urged the United States and other countries to allow the agency to confront Iran with evidence obtained on a laptop computer that once belonged to an Iranian technician with access to the country’s nuclear program. But the U.S. refused until a few weeks ago, and only agreed on Feb. 15, the report said, to allow original documents to be shown to the Iranians. In the report issued Friday, the agency described some of that evidence in public for the first time, “all of which the Agency believes would be relevant to nuclear weapon R & D.”
The most suspicious-looking document in the collection turned over to the I.A.E.A. was a schematic diagram showing what appeared to be the development of a warhead, with a layout of internal components. “This layout has been assessed by the agency as quite likely to be able to accommodate a nuclear device,” the I.A.E.A. wrote. But that does not prove it was a nuclear warhead, and Iran argued that its missile program used “conventional warheads only.”
The report referred to other documents drawn from the laptop — though the source of the material was never mentioned — that included documents describing how to test “high-voltage detonator firing equipment” and technology to fire multiple detonators at one time, which is required to trigger a nuclear reaction by forcing a nuclear core to implode. The report also described work on whether a detonation could be triggered in a 400-meter-deep shaft from a distance of 10 kilometers, or about six miles, leading to suspicions that the Iranian scientists were already thinking about nuclear testing. But it is unclear whether the shaft would have been wide enough for a nuclear weapon.
Iran claims the evidence is fabricated. Via Moran, go see how credible the experts at Arms Control Wonk find their denials. The only way out, they claim, is with direct negotiations that would allow Iran to suspend the program while saving face. Exit question: Why wouldn’t Iran just continue the program in secret?

Or wait out a Bush Administration for an Obama one ?
William Amos on February 22, 2008 at 8:23 PM
Only a fool or a democrat would ever believe they stopped
AMartinez on February 22, 2008 at 8:26 PM
Obama will talk them into submitting to his agenda, right? Right?
bbz123 on February 22, 2008 at 8:26 PM
Shock of the year….
malan89 on February 22, 2008 at 8:27 PM
“We can talk it out” Obama as Commander-in-Chief, with a nuclear-armed Iran.
Truly scary thought.
AZCoyote on February 22, 2008 at 8:30 PM
Oh I can’t wait until I see Hussein and Mahmoud have their love-fest in the White House!!!
This is “change” baby!!
Indy Conservative on February 22, 2008 at 8:33 PM
The Iranians will stop because they are rational actors working in good faith with the international community rather than in focused pursuit of power and eventual dominance of the region. Duh!!
Wineaholic on February 22, 2008 at 8:35 PM
Ah change! I Barrac will change America to benifit the world the way I see fit.
AMartinez on February 22, 2008 at 8:36 PM
Does it matter whether or not it’s being secretly done? I don’t think there is a leader in the world who has the guts to do what needs to be done to stop them and they know it.
boomer on February 22, 2008 at 8:36 PM
I agree with William Amos, the Iranians are stalling for
time, they know under a Liberal President that America
will just talk, and the scary problem is like the phrase
in Independence Day movie, can we co-exist,the answer
just die! So,I would love to know how serious are they
going to get with this weapons program. Is it for defence,
or is going to be like the movie beneath the planet of
the Apes were Charleston Heston falls on the doomsday
cobalt ICMB,but an Iranian version of sterilizing the
planet of Infedels!
canopfor on February 22, 2008 at 8:37 PM
I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t do just that. Agree to some terms, drag feet, and then ultimately renege on the process, all the while gaining a few extra months of secret enrichment development. It’s a tried and proven method. I actually am a bit surprised that Russia is getting on board (supposedly). Given what has been happening in Serbia this past week, I would think they would hold out on helping us against Iran in the UNSC, in hopes for some diplomatic capital. Maybe Iran is really starting to scare them. Who knows.
Weight of Glory on February 22, 2008 at 8:38 PM
oops, that should be Infidel, and not Infedels.

Answer: They will if Obama is elected president.
Jimmy the Dhimmi on February 22, 2008 at 8:58 PM
This is going to happen, since nobody (including the US) is going to seriously deal with it until they have the bomb. When it does happen, then we get to see the entire world drop on it’s knees and invite Iran to dictate all policy issues for the ME. It’s what they’ve always wanted and they will get it. I guess at this point, we should be looking at counter-measure options…Star Wars anybody? But even if we can somehow defend ourselves, that won’t help our economic situation…that’s the real threat here. Iran can then vector oil (with nuclear blackmail) from the region to any of their friends (China would be my guess) at will and cut us off dry.
I’ll just stop typing now and start shopping for bicycles and candles (while they’re still available, that is).

Indeed. It worked for North Korea.

We should get The ‘Stache to look at the schematics. He has a history of working to divine The Truth from limited visual clues. And a willingness to be frank to B.S.’ers.

Exit answer: Why do it the hard way, in a year Madyline Albrite will give them all the technology they need. Hell, we will probably give them some enriched uranium too!

There we go. Let’s get back to business here. Enough of these non scandals.
THE CHOSEN ONE on February 22, 2008 at 9:21 PM
Why bother to do anything in secret? Since the late 70’s, Iran has managed to create an effective and destabilizing network that they are just staring to bring to full force. The bastards have killed our boys from Lebanon to Iraq, and get away with it. Iran is rushing to an end of days scenario that reflects the suicide bomber mentality on the scale of a nation.
Six word solution, already proposed by Maverick with music by The Beach Boys.
Hening on February 22, 2008 at 9:21 PM
When it’s all said and done not only will they find a nuclear program in Iran, you’ll find OBL. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
THE CHOSEN ONE on February 22, 2008 at 9:52 PM
The mind reels at the sheer stupidity and cowardice of the international community that they would a) take Iran’s word for anything and b) fully support a report that was a pile of fecal matter.
Are they just too busy with all the corruption at that U.N. and the IAEA that they don’t have time to actually KNOW for sure what Iran is or isn’t doing regarding pursuing nuclear weapons?
I might be just a regular gal from Texas, but it would seem that allowing one of the most crazy regimes on the planet to obtain THE weapon of mass destruction is not entirely the best idea in the world.

For at least the next four years it looks like it’s back under our school desks again. Darn!
Travis1 on February 22, 2008 at 10:41 PM
There seems to be an implication here that fanatical Muslims cannot control nuclear weaponry responsibly.
They seem to be able to hold video cameras steadily enough while doing beheading videos.
Isn’t that reassurance enough of their stability?
profitsbeard on February 23, 2008 at 1:45 AM
No, but I strongly suspect it was written by people who do not understand the difference between a Research and Development program and a Production program.
As a general rule, you do R&D first, to determine how to build whatever it is you want- a plane, a car, or an atom bomb. But once you’ve got the design parameters set, the R&D phase ends, and you begin actually making the item(s) in question.
Back in WW II, there was a saying that “At some point, you have to fire the engineers and start the assembly line rolling”- meaning that sooner or later, you have to stop refining and fine-tuning a piece of equipment (R&D) and put it into actual production and deployment (production). (BTW, this is a lesson we seem to have forgotten today- I can think of no other reason that we are only now beginning production of aircraft like the F-22, F-35, Eurofighter, Rafale’, etc., all of which are based on designs that were frozen in the Carter Administration.)
I’d say that RE nuclear weapons, the Iranians are in the “fire (or in their case, shoot) the engineers” phase right now. The fact that a document has come to light describing “high-voltage detonator firing equipment” (klystron switches, in the correct terminology) and the exact specifications for an underground test-shot hole (roughly similar to those used by the major powers in the 1940s and 1950s) indicates that the major thrust of their program now is actual application, as opposed to theory and design. (There are several ways to built a relatively cheap and effective A-bomb. However, some are inherently more vulnerable to accidental triggering than others. The Iranians seem to have gotten past the stage of weeding out the potentially “tricky” designs.)
Or in other words, the next “earthquake” in the Dasht-i-Kabir Desert may not be due to a fault slippage.
cheers (sort of)

This news is no news at all, I don’t think, to anyone other than members of the IAEA and UN. It always amazes them to find people doing exactly what they have stated they will do. Such a dissapointment isn’t it? With the coming apparent certainty of an Obama reign for the next 4 years and the promise of endless talk, talk, talk but no action from the ‘peaceniks’ the real countdown of this era begins. Isreal simply cannot be left to shoulder this burden alone, but they will if forced to. However, W is left with 9 months and I believe he is very aware of that ticking clock. Iran is betting the house on his lame duck, no support status for the remainder of his term. I think, based on Bush’s previous actions, that they are making the wrong bet. I don’t believe that W will turn the reigns of power over to a Dem with the ‘Iranian Question’ still in play. If it appears more and more certain as the summer moves along that Obama is going to win, Irans nuclear days count down faster and faster. If it is the last minute before the inaguration come next January before he gives the order, I don’t believe W will leave office with this threat still in play. The call will go out before he walks out of that office for the final time. I sleep much easier knowing Bush is still in charge.

“I agree with William Amos, the Iranians are stalling for time, they know under a Liberal President that America will just talk..”
As opposed to what Bush is doing now, which is…uhh…uhhh…ummmm…
Say, anybody heard any good “Axis of Evil” jokes lately?
Nah, me either.
Mike H on February 23, 2008 at 5:39 PM
Indeed, yet a timely and sobering one ;)
I have always been breathless with stupefaction upon hearing the varied ‘guesstimates’ being tossed around as a factor for deciding international policy regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions – 5 years until they get the bomb. 3 years. 7 months next Wednesday.
Utter bullshit. Always has been.
Given a marketplace transaction, they could have a functional bomb tomorrow. Nobody seems stupid enough to sell them one – for now. So they have to build their own. The materials are well-known. The physics is well-known. The deployment platforms are well-known. They are busy refining the fissile material as we blog.
It is an inevitability that they will have a deliverable weapon in an ‘electoral’ timeframe. To believe otherwise is to have ones head firmly buried in the sand – or another suitably dark place.

Neapolitan was short, and I am sure the French believed him to the end, just like ‘Ah many jabs’. Both suffered from being unable to face reality because their sense of stature does not allow them to see reality unless it matches their own.
