Video: Navy gives rogue satellite the full Death Star treatment

They needed steady seas, had a time window of only a few seconds to shoot, and were aiming at something no bigger than a bus, and they still got it. Man, did they ever:

[Marine Gen. James Cartwright] estimated there was an 80-90 percent chance that the missile struck the most important target on the satellite — its fuel tank, containing 1,000 pounds of hydrazine, which Pentagon officials say could have posed a health hazard to humans if it had landed in a populated area…

The size of the debris is smaller than the Pentagon had forecast and most of the satellite’s intelligence value was likely destroyed, Cartwright said. Though the Pentagon has played down that aspect of the shootdown, analysts had said one of the reasons for the operation was that officials worried that without it, larger chunks of the satellite could fall and be recovered, opening the possibility of secret technology falling into the hands of the Chinese or others.

“Football-sized chunks,” quoth the AFP. Goldfarb sees it as a de facto ad for missile defense. If shooting down an ICBM is like hitting a bullet with a bullet, this is like hitting a wafting tennis ball with a bullet: Not quite as impressive, but darned sweet.

Check out the awesomely awesome high-rez photos here, then click the image to watch.

So absence of a missile defense system is a good thing, see? :)

Midas on February 21, 2008 at 9:27 AM

You’ve really gotten into the liberal mind there! I bet Michelle had a thought yesterday… “I’ve never been so ashamed of America, capable of hitting that satellite. Who do they [you know she doesn't identify as American] think they are!”

amkun on February 21, 2008 at 11:04 AM

I loved this when I saw it this morning on Fox. I cheered!

4shoes on February 21, 2008 at 11:16 AM

Thanks for the link, guys. The skeptics at Wired Danger Room had a naming contest for the shootdown. How ’bout Operation STFU?

Cuffy Meigs on February 21, 2008 at 11:26 AM

War Porn! You know they were “aiming” for the hydrazine tank and they got it. The general made sure in his presentation that it was hit because of what he said:

“We’ve got a fireball. Given that there’s no fuel, that would indicate that there’s a hydrazine fire. We have a vapor cloud that formed. That again would be likely to be the hydrazine. We also have some spectral analysis from airborne platforms that indicate the presence of hydrazine after the intercept.”

These guys are fantastic! They went for the money shot and got it!

Proud to be an America? You bet. But, one other thing, I’m feeling luck, very lucky, to have been born here.

cjs1943 on February 21, 2008 at 11:30 AM

Take that bitch! And when your smoldering ashes fall to Earth, we’re going to democratize them like it ain’t no thing!

How ’bout Operation STFU?

Cuffy Meigs on February 21, 2008 at 11:26 AM

So what is on Ronald Wilson Reagan’s agenda today in heaven?

1. Kickin’ it with Joe McCarthy.
2. Tellin’ jokes with Ann Coulter’s dad.
3. Givin’ the biggest middle finger evah to the commies.

Priceless.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on February 21, 2008 at 11:45 AM

The mother of U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Andrew Jackson is proud of her boy today.

The kid who fired the missile is named Andrew Jackson. Just another layer of sweeeeet on top of the sundae…

gridlock2 on February 21, 2008 at 9:28 AM

Positively Jacksonian!

baldilocks on February 21, 2008 at 11:46 AM

Wasn’t the missile unarmed? Anybody know why?
Still, nice shooting guys!

dhimwit on February 21, 2008 at 8:45 AM

The SM-3 doesn’t have an explosive warhead. Simply striking something at the speeds involved produces ample kinetic energy to destroy the target.

I had an allergy attack last night so I was up watching the History Channel and they were talking about U.S. Presidents, specifically, Ronaldus Magnus, at the time I was watching. I find it funny, that people derided, and still did on this show, Regan’s “Strategic Defense Initiative.” Seems to me, that, in light of today’s demonstration that Ronnie seems more prophetic than dottering.

Kinda like a .50 cal BMG round encountering a terrorist’s noggin.

(Google it, if you dare.)

infidel4life on February 21, 2008 at 12:14 PM

Hmm. Lefty conspiracy theories coming to a blog near you…

1) The Navy didn’t hit anything with a missile, there was a self-destruct mechanism on the satellite! American Propaganda!
2) The Hydrazine cloud will ______insert_BS______ to the atmosphere and excellerate Global Warming, cause cancer and more terririst activity!!!!
3) How did Bushitlerburton profit from this?!

Swinehound on February 21, 2008 at 12:28 PM

Oh man, I’m so proud of our guys! Well done U.S. Armed Forces!

Thanks AP for putting this up! :-D

spmat on February 21, 2008 at 12:52 PM

It would have been far better to just break into scheduled TV programming with Bush saying “Hey, y’all…watch this!”

flipflop on February 21, 2008 at 9:28 AM

Or “I can’t ’splain it well in words, but anyone who wishes our country bad, get this”.

Entelechy on February 21, 2008 at 1:00 PM

Those high res photos are freakin sweet.

4) How many could we have lifted from poverty with the same dollars?
5) We could have saved the world from global warming — A. Gore
6) We could have had Cuba-style health care — M. Moore
7) We could have paid for all the “change” and “hope” — B. Obama
8) One more reason not to be proud of my country, as an adult – - M. Obama
9) Add more…

Entelechy on February 21, 2008 at 1:04 PM

I see this as a warning to the Chinese. This lets them know if they plan on visiting the moon or places we have already been and plan on bringing anything back in their shuttle…then guess what…we will shoot them down from anywhere in space. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

jjcarrillo on February 21, 2008 at 1:10 PM

So cool that they actually hit it. That would have been a big DOH had they missed it.

Geronimo on February 21, 2008 at 1:31 PM

This is one of those cases where we’ve told the rest of the planet that shooting first isn’t their best choice. When failure is not an option, we have people on our side determined not to fail.

52Ranger on February 21, 2008 at 1:32 PM

Never understood the leftist aversion to missile defense. Why, it’s almost like they want us to be defenseless against an incoming ICBM.

amkun on February 21, 2008 at 9:20 AM

They do, by their words and actions, they show nothing but hate for this country, they want nothing but to “change” it, and if they can’t do that, hell they’d love nothing better than for us to be at the mercy of our enemies.

4shoes on February 21, 2008 at 1:34 PM

Cuffy Meigs on February 21, 2008 at 11:26 AM

Kudos!

I’m sure someone thought it or said it. But if that satellite fell and was partly intact upon reentry, it could have given away secrets that could harm our national security. It was the right thing to do and it proves our missile defense works. So double bonus.

Kini on February 21, 2008 at 1:40 PM

Ya know who looks awful foolish right now, re: SDI?

The Democratic Party, that’s who.

“Wasted money”? “Probably won’t work”? “WE’LL get this wasteful and unneccessary program shut down.”?

REAL global reactions:

Putin: retreated to his bunker beneath the Kremlin with intense stomach pains, a migrane, and an overall desire to be left alone.

The Chinese Central Committee: Colectively wet themselves…but that’s nothing new seeing as how their average age is like 89.

Chinese Military: collectively crapped their pants.

Iran: shrugged, switched delivery system for “America Bomb” to “Plan B”: sneaking it through porous southern border in a semi.

Czech Republic and Poland: Quietly begged for an exceleration of implimentation of SDI system components on their soil.

Democrats, especially the ones who said this thing would NEVER work, was TOTALLY a waste of money, had NO practical uses. Democrats like, say, Nancy Pelosi: crapped themselves.

SuperCool on February 21, 2008 at 3:47 PM

Good for the U.S. Navy. Added bonus is that it REALLY upsets Russia and China. They don`t want us militarizing space. Wasn`t it CHINA who took out a satellite with a rocket some time ago?

ThePrez on February 21, 2008 at 4:05 PM

Dear U.S. Navy, Can we send Berkeley’s Code Pink crew up and give them a shot now please?

Teddy on February 21, 2008 at 4:31 PM

you know what sucks?

if in the future, an enemy fired a missile at us and we shot it down what would our next response be?

Im guessing the UN would step in along with our domestic communist morons and claim since noone was hurt, we should not retaliate.

Sonosam on February 21, 2008 at 5:03 PM

It would be sweet to ask Senator Obama for comment, don’t you think?

Kralizec on February 21, 2008 at 5:41 PM

Well, killer asteroids be damned. I can sleep better at night now.

johnnyU on February 21, 2008 at 6:18 PM

Michelle Obama said, “I would’ve been really proud if they hadn’t been a half inch off from dead center”.

SouthernGent on February 21, 2008 at 6:34 PM

-just too lazy to inquire…
anyone know the time lapse from launch to strike?

number9 on February 21, 2008 at 7:01 PM

Now when does my space weapon platform get orbiting
in geo-sync orbit with the laser cannon, with nano-
second response time to strike any target!
(Grampa always told me dreamin is free!)haha.

Oh yea,on a Serious note,Thank you for your vision
President Ronald Reagan.

canopfor on February 21, 2008 at 7:29 PM

Nice shot!
Why didn’t they just use the giant moon “Laser?”

Better living thru superior firepower.

dentalque on February 21, 2008 at 7:36 PM

There were only 6 highrez photos? Did I miss something? :-(

SouthernGent on February 21, 2008 at 7:55 PM

Thanks for the video! >:}

Nice shootin’

furytrader on February 21, 2008 at 11:20 PM

Massively cool!

sMack on February 21, 2008 at 11:41 PM

Wasn`t it CHINA who took out a satellite with a rocket some time ago?

ThePrez on February 21, 2008 at 4:05 PM

Yes they did, the sat they took out was in a steady orbit 500 miles up, and in the process caused an orbit to be lost because of the debris still floating around.

Shooting down a satellite in a steady orbit is “not difficult” (used loosely). The F-15 did that in the 80’s. USSR had anti-sat satellite’s back then as well.

When you have a satellite in a decayed orbit traveling that fast, with no risk of loosing an orbit because the debris will re-enter in 40 days or so, it is a perfect ABM test.

Nice shooting Navy!!!

F15Mech on February 21, 2008 at 11:59 PM

lol and one of my old professors from freshman year told me missile defense was like hitting a bullet with a bullet.. what a mother freaking moron.

America – Fuck yea!

Chakra Hammer on February 22, 2008 at 1:40 AM

You got to love this…

China calls on US to provide data on satellite shootdown

China further requests that the US fulfil its international obligations in earnest and promptly provide to the international community the necessary information and relevant data… so that relevant countries can take precautions.
