Video: Honored guest gets just a tiny bit funky in Liberia

Not the funkiest he’s ever been, but his approval rating back then was a sight higher than it is now.

Verdict: He could hang with Obama, but Gregory would run him off the floor.

A sidenote on Liberia. I was listening to Paul Harvey, today, and, after discussing how Liberia had been established by slaves that had been freed in America, he went on to say that, within a year after its creation, the former slaves in Liberia took up trading in slaves.

Assuming this to be factual, it’s the first time that I’ve ever heard of it – and I wonder why? Surely, this has been discussed in today’s “progressive” public schools. ;O)

OhEssYouCowboys on February 21, 2008 at 2:41 PM

Had you not mentioned that, I was prepared for an FYI here.

Liberia was created BY AMERICA as the place where we were going to send freed African slaves after the civil war. This was the ‘return to Africa’ plan that seemed feasible seeing as how they had no money, no jobs, no houses, no nothing.

Instead of the ‘back to Africa’ movement as a solution of what to do with this population of people, they set up the Jim Crow laws. So I ask which was better of the three options for the people of the devastated South at the time.

1. Send them all to Liberia and figure out how to farm land with fewer people.

2. Take EVERYTHING away from the white people in the South and give it to the blacks who hadn’t earned it. . . thereby creating a poor but educated white people class and a rich uneducated black people class. . . this is where the ‘40 acres and a mule’ came from.

3. Create Jim Crow laws where everyone was free, could remain in America, but everything was separate. As far as the government was concerned ’separate BUT EQUAL’. The problem was that it wasn’t equal. . . but Jim Crow laws were established to solve an incredibly difficult problem when you have tens of millions of newly free but penniless people.

Take what you will from this post. But if we had done what we had set out to do when America created Liberia, America would be a very different place now. I contend that the ‘victimized’ African Americans here today are very fortunate that we didn’t push harder for the ‘back to Africa’ movement. But I digress as the ‘racist’ historian that I know I’ll be accused of being. . . .

I guess record approval ratings in Africa doesn’t make Michelle Obama proud of her country.

Don’t know anything about that, but there was something similar I learned reading Bill Bennett’s terrific “America: The Last Best Hope.” Turns out the mutinous slaves on The Amistad, cause celebre of abolitionists, eloquently defended by John Quincy Adams, and guaranteed their freedom by the Supreme Court, returned to Africa and promptly became slave-traders. I guess I must have left the theater before that little epilogue came up in Spielberg’s version.

I am so happy to see people appreciating him, and to see him enjoying himself.

Gotta disagree. Gregory’s the guy who’s watching himself dance (dance clubs still have lots of mirrors, right?). While the Prez is just groovin’. Plus he’s keeping the beat with the hand claps. Yep, much more fun to dance with W.

Dear OhEss
The majority of the slaves that ended up in America were bought from blacks. I’ve often wondered if those in favor of reparations want the descendents of these blacks to pay a fair share. Slavery continues in some corners of Africa to this very day. It’s rather like people who endlessly blame Bush for Iraq while every cent to pay for the war since 2006 has been voted by a Democratic congress.

That Africans enslaved other Africans, who were then injected into the slave trade to the Americas – is common knowledge.

My point was that FORMER SLAVES – WHO HAD BEEN FREED FROM SLAVERY – went on to ENSLAVE others. And, that said point is not a part of today’s “progressive” public school curriculum.

mimi1220 on February 21, 2008 at 3:59 PM

That old boy sure does dance a lot for somebody who is not supposed to like dancing. And he does it on camera too.

George is still the one all of us would rather have a beer with, than any other President in the country. And he didn’t become our favorite party boy because he’s a fun drunk. He’s our favorite party animal because he has a good sense of humor, he is fun to be around, and when it is time for business, he’s all business. When it is time for play, he plays hard. And when it is time to go to war, you never have to guess who’s side he is truly on, or whether you can count on him to stand by you when the bullets fly.

And that is why the troops love him.

From dance to another artform, in my opinion the Malinese music scene is the best one in Africa. I haven’t been there, but all the albums I’ve heard (and there are a lot available) are fantastic: rhythms that take you in, really hypnotic stuff.

Check out, for instance, Ali Farka Touré and Toumani Diabate

GWB43 really is a mis-represented and underestimated person. He’s done some things that have made me mad before, but I can never stay mad at him.

History will be much kinder to him than most of America has been over the last 7 years (I certainly hope.) He’s done more for the environment than any President ever. He’s reserved the largest amount of land for National Parks of any President ever (including Teddy Roosevelt.) He’s protected our country and reversed the decline of our military. He’s created an alternative energy industry. He has changed the perception of Africa concerning America, and has done more to improve the lives of the world’s impoverished than any President ever. And don’t forget — he brought Democracy to the Middle East and forced America to make a sacrifice for the benefit of others.

And we’re witnessing in his visits to Africa and Armenia and Kosavo, some heart felt gratitude towards the United States, and I’m glad for him.

within a year after its creation, the former slaves in Liberia took up trading in slaves.

Well, here’s another Inconvenient Fact you won’t hear during Black History Month:

Originally, there was an institution of Indentured Servitude, under which someone could pay for his passage to the New World by working as a servant for a certain time. There were indentured servants of all colors. One of them became a successful land owner, and bought out the contract of another servant, then made the claim that he “had ye Negro for his life”. The Virginia court agreed, beginning the institution of chattel slavery in that colony.

The first owner of an black slave in Virginia was himself black

Correct! Mali has some great musicians, that are world famous. Probably one of the few places in Africa that a white person, or black for that matter, can go walking around at night with no worries.

What was interesting, was that many Malians are french speaking Muslims, but they despise the French and Arabs, and genuinely love America.
