McCain ready for “war” with NYT; Update: Did Huckabee know? Update: Video added

posted at 9:21 am on February 21, 2008 by Allahpundit

He’s holding a pro forma presser as I write this to sniff at the charges, which I thought was a foolish way of making a small story into a big deal until I saw this. It’s already big; might as well hit back. The conspiracy theories swirl: Who fed this to the Times last year, back when Maverick was still a longshot? Is Gibby right that the Times endorsed him last month, after this was already in the works, the better to sandbag him now? Could TNR’s murky role in all of this be payback for McCain laughing at them over l’affaire Beauchamp? And the greatest conspiracy of all — could the Times so love their Maverick that they’d set themselves up as a dragon for McCain to slay and thereby reclaim his conservative bona fides? Well, er, no, but that’s the effect!

The McCain campaign is using a two-pronged attack to push back against the story. First, they’ll argue it was a thinly sourced piece of innuendo journalism. But McCain aides will also strike at the source, using the Times’ liberal reputation as a means of self-defense to draw sympathy from the GOP’s conservative base.

To this end, a top McCain adviser accused the paper of practicing tabloid journalism.

“It’s not every night I stay up to read the National Enquirer,” said Charlie Black, who was with other top McCain aides at the senator’s Arlington, Va., headquarters to mount the counterattack.

Black noted he had taken heat from some of his “conservative friends’ after McCain won the paper’s endorsement in January. “We’re going to go to war with them now,” Black said. “We’ll see if that hurts or helps.”

The whole campaign’s hitting the “National Enquirer” talking point, including Mark McKinnon and Mark Salter, who offers more background on the role of the House of Foer in this:

Salter blamed the New York Times’ obsession with this sort of intramural scorekeeping as the paper’s real motivation for going ahead with a story “they’d already spiked.” “They did this because the The New Republic was going to run a story that looked back at the infighting there,” Salter said, “the Judy Miller-type power struggles — they decided that they would rather smear McCain than suffer a story that made the New York Times newsroom look bad.”…

Salter also said that the Senator would soon release statements from those people interviewed by the Times for the story — “dozens” according to him — who denied many of the facts alleged in the story (including Iseman’s supposedly frequent presence in the Senate office), but who were not quoted in the piece.

They’ve already released this so clearly they’ve been preparing. As for the supposed infighting at the Times, note the detail in Jim Rutenberg’s reply to Patrick Hynes that not only doesn’t he want to talk about the piece, no one else at the paper wants to talk about it either. We’ll see what TNR has to say later. In the meantime, if the Times is hot for stories about lobbyists exercising influence over major candidates, how about this?

Exit question one: What are the odds that Maverick would be linked to someone named Iceman? Exit question two: What are Huck and, especially, Mitt thinking right now? Halperin wonders.

Update: Commenter Weight of Glory contrasts the McCain spin shop with the Bush version.

Update: SECOND LOOK AT THE DRAGONSLAYER THEORY!

Update: Is this the “last twist” that Huck’s been counting on to deliver him the nomination? The story’s been in the works for months and has been teased on Drudge more than once. Huck’s staffers haven’t been shy in the past about hinting at secret knowledge of scandals set to break. Huck probably hung around hoping that the bomb would drop and would be big enough to knock Maverick out of the race, leaving him the last man standing.

But if he knew, why didn’t Romney know?

Update: An interesting detail buried near the end of the Politico piece linked up top. Here’s what the TNR story’s going to focus on, assuredly:

Reporters Jim Rutenberg, Stephen Labaton, and Marilyn Thompson — who’s leaving the paper — also did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

On Feb. 12, the Washington Post announced that Thompson would be leaving the Times and returning to the Post, her employer for fourteen years.

Rumors had circulated internally that Thompson had been working on the McCain piece and was dissatisfied it had not yet run, according to two Times staffers.

Update: Here’s the first few minutes of the presser.

Update: And here’s the Q&A about Iseman.

It’s time to lance the NYT boil. I would gladly contribute to a legal fund for the named woman if her lawyer would advertise such a fund on her behalf. A public figure probably wouldn’t win a slander case but a private citizen certainly can. They should force that slime generator, the New York Times, to either fish or cut bait.

saiga, after years of working in the hedge fund business they could have manufactured something on Romney based on half truths too.

funky chicken on February 21, 2008 at 10:56 AM

This is going to help McCain more than hurt him in the long run. Here’s how:

1. His name will finally be cleared from association with Keating 5, he was only included so that it wasn’t solely democrats being investigated.
2. It’s obviously a hit piece, garners sympathy for McCain.
3. Shows McCain is NOT loved by the NYT.
4. Donations to his campaign increase…today’s going to be a good day at his web site.

Thanks, NYT! You’ve turned into such a joke that all logical thinking people automatically like whoever it is you try to slime.

JustTruth101 on February 21, 2008 at 10:58 AM

The NYT editor is issuing statements this morning instead of answering phone calls. Hmmmmm. Probably triple proofread by the Times’ attorneys. Why not just come on TV and answer some questions like, i don’t know. MAVERICK. Real men face the fire when it gets tough. This gutless coward is hiding out in his newsroom sipping a double Latte.

I AM a Romney supporter. You McCain fans are feeling pretty threatened today. You are seeing what we (ROMNEY Supporters) saw long ago -that McCain has too much baggage.

Enjoy the ride – it’s gonna get worse. I will vote for McCain IF he get rid of Juan Hernandez and if he puts a TRUE Conservative on the ticket. But, this isn’t going to be pretty.

If he does not – I will write in MITT ROMNEY – Proudly !!

stenwin77 on February 21, 2008 at 11:01 AM

(here’s two more reasons why this helps McCain)

5. McCain shows he is tough and won’t shrink from an attack.
6. Shows he won’t go ballistic, that legendary temper is being held in check isn’t it? Calm, cool, collected, in control. Very presidential.

if he could only make a good one-liner about it (maybe tomorrow, today is too soon…) to make the NYT look ridiculous, that would be Reaganesque.

also…

McCain CAN NOT win against Obama.
stenwin77 on February 21, 2008 at 10:52 AM

WRONG, dude. I have a friend who is a media analyst and he told me just last night that the “Barack banana is getting peeled, and they’re seeing there’s nothing inside” which is WHY this came out today.

I love Romney, too, but he’s out of the race. Think about what he said at CPAC, go back and watch his speech, and if you really have respect for Romney (as I do, I’m with you on that) think carefully about what he said. He’s supporting McCain not because he agrees with him, but because he KNOWS he is infinitely better for the country than the socialist nightmare Obama/Hillary. All I’m asking is that you consider how truly freaking smart Romney is, and consider his opinion on why we should support McCain.

John Weaver. Hmmm. He’s the same guy who approached Daschle’s folks and started the party switch rumors, and the Kerry VP rumors too, right?

Gee, I wonder if McCain fired him last year? Gotta love those disgruntled former employees.

Well, if they worked for republicans the NY Times loves them anyway.

funky chicken on February 21, 2008 at 11:16 AM

Who didn’t see this coming?

Only one person: John McCain. Now he feels outraged, hurt and betrayed by what everyone else in the world sees as business as usual.

As they have in every election for more than a half-century now, the liberal media are going to come up with a hundred more of these smears against the new Most Evil Man In The Universe between now and November.

So now, in an effort to stop the inevitable, McCain is dropping everything to address these nonexistant charges. Watch carefully: you’re finally seeing how the 2008 Presidential campaign is going to play out.

Obama: “I want change and hope!”

McCain: “I am not an adulterer!”

The msm set him up as the republican candidate so they could tear him down. If anyone thinks that the ny times is quaking in their boots about all this criticism then you are obviously off your meds. The next hit piece is in the works at the wash post or la times and when it comes out everyone will forget this and then the next hit piece will follow that one in a few weeks. By the time the election rolls around it won’t matter whether any of the scandals are true, it is only the perception that matters (it is the strategy thet have used against the Bush administration which will go down in popular history as a scandal plagued administration even though it isn’t true). republicans will vote republican, democrat will vote democrat and the clueless rest will either vote against mccain because of the perception created or for hillary of barry because it will be a first (black or woman). And America will have a fascist administration.

It’s why the msm hated him and went around saying that everyone else either hated him or wouldn’t vote for mormons. Of all the things that the msm are, they aren’t stupid. They looked hard at Romney, knew they wouldn’t be able to even come up with a whiff of a scandal that wouldn’t look rediculous. They knew he would clean the clocks of any demofascist he faced in the general and Americans, conservative or liberal, will vote for someone they feel is decent and qualified, two things neither of the democrat frontrunners are.

Umm, outside of Mitt’s own little cult of personality, he isn’t exactly thought of as a man with a whole lot of moral conviction. He basically lied himself into a 3rd place finish in the primaries this year (or to the Mass. governorship five years ago; pick your poison), and you’re telling me that a man willing to wholly misrepresent himself in that manner isn’t likely to have a few skeletons of his own rattling around in the closet? Also, his “used car salesman” appearance wouldn’t exactly endear him to the general public should such a scandal actually arise, true or not. Mitt was and is a sitting duck for any scandalmongers looking to take him down.

Mitt would have been a far better candidate because he was never dumb enough to get into bed with the media like McCain did so even if they tried to destroy him, it wouldn’t stick. McCain has granted legitimacy to the NYT because he agrees with him so often. His pronouncements that the story is bunk now ring hollow. He is dumb ass and made the mistake of believing the press was his friend.

PMSNBC has been railing the NYT all morning. I’m starting to understand that though they are cut from the same loaf of bread, they are COMPETITORS in a news business that has become much more competitive over the years. The “timing” of this story is getting way more press than the actual text itself. They actuallly showed on the screen the NYT endorsement word for word on Jan. 30th, then the script of today’s slime seperated only by a few weeks. Ouch! Way to go PMSNBC, for now.

If Romney has always been anti-abortion, and governed in a pro-life manner, the truth is that he blatantly lied to the citizens of Mass before and during his gubernatorial campaign. Whichever position happens to be his true one, it’s pretty clear that he’s seriously and serially misrepresented himself for political gain over the past six years.

I was all set to write in Fred Thompson this year, since Arizona will probably go to McCain anyway, but the NYT story has quickly pulled me back into the fold. I think as the election nears, and the mud grows thick in the air, conservatives will once again rally ’round the flag and make a go of it.
No landslide for Obama this time around, methinks.

joewm315 on February 21, 2008 at 2:31 PM

First of all, Yes, We told you so! All of you moderidiots who thought that McCain was the ‘most electable’ because he was so liberal didn’t see that the MSM was pushing this guy on us like a wheelbarrow of horsecrap because the want us to LOSE not win you idiots! Those of us who would never and still not ever vote for McNasty know that he is a foul tempered bitter little Napolean with a more old baggage than the lost and found at LAX. He divides the party like no nominee has ever done in history. He has a history of doing back room deals and being involved in corruption. He has a real hatred of conservatives and conservatives know it. This man is about as unelectable as you could possibly come up with. But because the MSM and certain voters are determined to get that amnesty bill through at any costs, and that’s what his candidacy is really all about, they would make a deal with the devil to get this guy into office.

McCain needs to get out! He is not wanted by the majority of the republican party. He has been winning primaries by democrats voting for him as independent because they want to saddle us with a weak candidate and it looks like they succeeded. And how many times did the other conservatives and I tell you that as soon as he was the nominee, the press would turn on him like a rattlesnake? Ten million, twenty million? You can’t fix stupid!

Mitt Romney represented balance in this hard left leaning state. Now we have a left wing socialist for Gov. in Cadillac DTS (Deval Travels in Style) Patrick.
Also:

outside of Mitt’s own little cult of personality, he isn’t exactly thought of as a man with a whole lot of moral conviction.

Are you kidding? I will assume you actually believe that. Let me clue you in about Mormons. I grew up in the LDS church and I can tell you one of the strongest pillars in the LDS faith is family. He is a practicing or as we say, “Temple going” Mormon so I have no doubt as to his exceptional moral character.
I’m not sure about the whole McCain thing and frankly I don’t care. Seems like a hit piece to me. People have said it and I’ll parrot it, the MSM built McCain up because he would be easier to knock down than Romney. I’m sure they have loads of this stuff that will come out in the coming months.

McCain voted to defund Planned Parenthood last year, Clinton didn’t and would likely expand Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer funding.

McCain voted to ban partial-birth abortion, Clinton didn’t and would likely reverse the partial-birth abortion ban.

McCain voted for Roberts and Alito and made the case for them in the media, Clinton didn’t.

McCain has never voted for a tax increase, Clinton will increase taxes.

McCain will continue the Bush tax cuts, Clinton will end them.

McCain will end pork-barrel spending, Clinton supports the endowment of projects like the Woodstock Museum with taxpayer funding.

McCain will not cut and run in Iraq, Clinton will work with Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senator Harry Reid to do just that.

McCain sponsored legislation to keep the Fairness Doctrine from rearing its head again, Clinton has not and has signaled moves to revive it.

McCain supports school choice, Clinton does not.

Clinton will mandate health insurance, McCain will not.

McCain voted to convict Bill Clinton on impeachment, Clinton was a witting accomplice in President Bill Clinton’s scandals.

McCain has an ACU (American Conservative Union) rating of 82.3; Clinton has a rating of 9.

McCain has 0-percent rating from NARAL; Clinton has 100 percent.

As for those who have taken to labeling Senator McCain a liberal, we reject that.

A liberal does not have a zero rating from NARAL and a 17-percent voting record with the AFL-CIO (the same rating as Sen. Jim DeMint, by way of comparison).

http://www.bennettmornings.com/currentarticle

Yep, a pathetic voting record for sure. DeMint in 2012?

Pretty pathetic that a “real conservative” allows the NYT to lead him by the nose. And yes, I am referring to you, Bikerken, not the republican nominee that was selected by a plurality of the party and will not be stepping down to make hateful, bitter people feel better any time soon.

You had better get used to Mac, he will be our next President. Most American’s, unlike you, are too smart to fall for the NYT’s steaming pile of crap.

JayHaw Phrenzie on February 21, 2008 at 3:36 PM

If Romney has always been anti-abortion, and governed in a pro-life manner, the truth is that he blatantly lied to the citizens of Mass before and during his gubernatorial campaign.

That’s baloney. State what your real problem is with Romney. Otherwise leave the leftist msm talking points to the airheads at kos.

You hit the nail on the head. I suspected religous bigotry was big s’s problem but missed that snide shot completely. That proves what his problem is. I hope he and any others with that problem get a kick out of the next 50 years of fascism they are helping bring to America. If he’s an evangelical it will be interesting seeing there reaction when the fascists cement their political position and then come after people of faith.

I never liked Romney because, IMO, he is a slick, manufactured, political weasel that will say or do anything to win an election. That, and the fact that he is just plain unlikeable.

JayHaw Phrenzie on February 21, 2008 at 3:47 PM

McCain has an ACU (American Conservative Union) rating of 82.3

That’s lifetime. He’s a 62 over the past ten years. So at his best he was a B grade conservative at his worse he was an F. He craves acceptance and if he manages to survive the beating his freinds in the msm and on the other side of the aisle are about to give him and miraculously gets elected he will crawl back to them and do whatever it takes to get back in their good graces. The only people he has consistently been antagonistic towards are conservatives.

peacenprosperity on February 21, 2008 at 3:51 PM

JayHaw, you are the one who got led around by the nose. Evidently you did not notice that I didn’t say what I thought about the NYT story. I did not becuase I don’t believe anything they print. You were the one who bought the NYT’s endorsement of him and believed that he was the best candidate regardless of all his baggage. He was NOT elected by a plurality of the vote, he has only had one state where he actually got more than half the republicans. He has actaully got less than 40 of the repub party vote. in almost every primary so far.

Hateful, bitter? I can always spot a lame argument when this crap comes in. If you don’t agree with me, you are a hater, you’re bitter. Sounds like a liberal to me.

Bikerken on February 21, 2008 at 3:58 PM

The guy ran in one election prior to being elected governor. While governor his actions were solidly conservative and highly successful.

As I said earlier, anyone who claims to have serious problems with Romney better look inward. The msm looked hard and all they found was that he put his dog in a car carrier on top of his car when he took car vacations with his family. Sounds like a horrible guy to me.

peacenprosperity on February 21, 2008 at 3:58 PM

Geronimo and P&P, you folks are right about Romney. The fact is that just too many evangelicals couldn’t stomach a Mormon because they see it as a cult. I lived in Michigan when Romneys father was governor and the state was booming economically. Romney was a fantastic governor. I’d sure like to see him out here in CA now instead of AHNULD Kennedy. We’re 16 billion in the red and he is looking to start up more govt programs. That’s the problems with liberals, they can’t add.

Mitt is a good man, he has been married to his college sweetheart forever, had a ton of kids and never a word of scandal. He’s too damned good for D.C. No wonder the slimy liberals hate him.

Bikerken on February 21, 2008 at 4:04 PM

I guess it is obvious that the McCain nuts can’t admit they screwed up by voting for him. This is going to be really boring listening to the McCain apologists for the next several months trying to convince the rest of us he was the right choice. Say what you want about Romney but he was a FAR better choice than McCain. So was Rudy, Fred, Duncan Hunter, etc…

I wonder if these McCain defenders will support him the next time he shits on the conservative base.

I thought Mitt was the most “Reaganesque” of all of the candidates.

The McCain supporters (here, and on FR anyway), are so so hateful. Spewing f-words all over. I hate to say it, but in November, I think they’ll regret their choice. I honestly do not think he can win. Mitt was so hated because he was/is outside of the slime in Washington DC.

Maybe 2012.

Sad and true. I grew up in San Jose where there were lots of Mormons. then through my parents divorce, I was brought to Mass where it’s heavy Catholic and I experienced the bigotry somewhat. Some parents would not let their kids hang out with me. Whatever, it’s just sad to see.
As for people thinking he’s too slick. I just don’t see it because to me he really was such an upstanding person, candidate and for the first time I was 110% behind a candidate and was so excited about it.
I know, I know, he’s out of the race and I’ve come to accept it as I have to. It just boggles my mind how people didn’t see the real Mitt as I do. But then again, I don’t get what people see in McCain.

Geronimo on February 21, 2008 at 4:27 PM

Perhaps I’m unclear but how does this actually change anything? I certainly don’t believe that a hit piece in the NYT about a liberal Republican could change the outcome of this election…regardless of the veracity of the claims?

Permit me a moment but the people that were going to vote for McCain won’t be swayed by this. Sooner or later the undecided voters (all twelve of them) were going to be relentlessly pelted by the very press that created McCain about why McCain is bad for the US. Like most people, I never believed that the press would remain McCain’s bard after the primaries. It was simply a matter of time before they turned on him.

It seems like poetic justice that McCain is getting worked over so soon after “clinching” by those that carried on the pretense of his viability. It’s just like in the Old Testament when the Lord uses the wicked to punish the wicked.

Go NYT!!

Oy vey! The fact that someone attends a particular faith’s religious services and/or is involved with their congregation does NOT mean that they are of good moral character. Scoundrels can profess faith and have outward appearances of moral living.

So McCain gets burned by the same MSM that he has been cozy-ing up to for years, and that is somehow supposed to motivate me, as a conservative, to pull the lever for McCain 08?
ColtsFan on February 21, 2008 at 1:19 PM

How is McCain supposed to be the United States in that analogy? He’s more like Neville Chamberlin toadying to the Nazis. Should the British have rallied around him once the bullets started flying?

But an even better WW2 analogy would be Vidkun Quisling, the man who made a secret deal with Hitler, and then announced himself “Prime Minister” of Norway. Norwegians hated Hitler, but they were held Quisling in even greater contempt; and they were right to do so.
