McCain ready for “war” with NYT; Update: Did Huckabee know? Update: Video added

He’s holding a pro forma presser as I write this to sniff at the charges, which I thought was a foolish way of making a small story into a big deal until I saw this. It’s already big; might as well hit back. The conspiracy theories swirl: Who fed this to the Times last year, back when Maverick was still a longshot? Is Gibby right that the Times endorsed him last month, after this was already in the works, the better to sandbag him now? Could TNR’s murky role in all of this be payback for McCain laughing at them over l’affaire Beauchamp? And the greatest conspiracy of all — could the Times so love their Maverick that they’d set themselves up as a dragon for McCain to slay and thereby reclaim his conservative bona fides? Well, er, no, but that’s the effect!

The McCain campaign is using a two-pronged attack to push back against the story. First, they’ll argue it was a thinly sourced piece of innuendo journalism. But McCain aides will also strike at the source, using the Times’ liberal reputation as a means of self-defense to draw sympathy from the GOP’s conservative base.

To this end, a top McCain adviser accused the paper of practicing tabloid journalism.

“It’s not every night I stay up to read the National Enquirer,” said Charlie Black, who was with other top McCain aides at the senator’s Arlington, Va., headquarters to mount the counterattack.

Black noted he had taken heat from some of his “conservative friends’ after McCain won the paper’s endorsement in January. “We’re going to go to war with them now,” Black said. “We’ll see if that hurts or helps.”

The whole campaign’s hitting the “National Enquirer” talking point, including Mark McKinnon and Mark Salter, who offers more background on the role of the House of Foer in this:

Salter blamed the New York Times’ obsession with this sort of intramural scorekeeping as the paper’s real motivation for going ahead with a story “they’d already spiked.” “They did this because the The New Republic was going to run a story that looked back at the infighting there,” Salter said, “the Judy Miller-type power struggles — they decided that they would rather smear McCain than suffer a story that made the New York Times newsroom look bad.”…

Salter also said that the Senator would soon release statements from those people interviewed by the Times for the story — “dozens” according to him — who denied many of the facts alleged in the story (including Iseman’s supposedly frequent presence in the Senate office), but who were not quoted in the piece.

They’ve already released this so clearly they’ve been preparing. As for the supposed infighting at the Times, note the detail in Jim Rutenberg’s reply to Patrick Hynes that not only doesn’t he want to talk about the piece, no one else at the paper wants to talk about it either. We’ll see what TNR has to say later. In the meantime, if the Times is hot for stories about lobbyists exercising influence over major candidates, how about this?

Exit question one: What are the odds that Maverick would be linked to someone named Iceman? Exit question two: What are Huck and, especially, Mitt thinking right now? Halperin wonders.

Update: Commenter Weight of Glory contrasts the McCain spin shop with the Bush version.

Update: SECOND LOOK AT THE DRAGONSLAYER THEORY!

Update: Is this the “last twist” that Huck’s been counting on to deliver him the nomination? The story’s been in the works for months and has been teased on Drudge more than once. Huck’s staffers haven’t been shy in the past about hinting at secret knowledge of scandals set to break. Huck probably hung around hoping that the bomb would drop and would be big enough to knock Maverick out of the race, leaving him the last man standing.

But if he knew, why didn’t Romney know?

Update: An interesting detail buried near the end of the Politico piece linked up top. Here’s what the TNR story’s going to focus on, assuredly:

Reporters Jim Rutenberg, Stephen Labaton, and Marilyn Thompson — who’s leaving the paper — also did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

On Feb. 12, the Washington Post announced that Thompson would be leaving the Times and returning to the Post, her employer for fourteen years.

Rumors had circulated internally that Thompson had been working on the McCain piece and was dissatisfied it had not yet run, according to two Times staffers.

Update: Here’s the first few minutes of the presser.

Update: And here’s the Q&A about Iseman.

The fact that the NYT is playing this game so early is again proof that the entire staff over there has gone so far over to the left that it’s a wonder the building they are working in isn’t leaning to one side. Who is calling the shots over there, the editor, or George Soros?

pilamaye on February 21, 2008 at 9:29 AM

One reason the MSM is gonna go after McCain: he won’t be afraid of prosecuting/investigating them for publishing national security secrets.

But rockmom had a great post on the previous thread:

Having once been a lobbyist, I can also tell you that many of them are accomplished fabulists. They make money by inflating their connections and dropping names. McCain’s people may have been rightfully worried that this woman was running around Washington boasting that she could get McCain to do stuff and even implying that she was sleeping with him. Sadly there are many women in Washington who have become successful that way, and others who get close to the line.

The New York Times article is pure bogus pig slop and is typical of that left wing rag. The McCain campaign should attack their lack of facts and credible sources with a vengeance and if necessary drag them into the courts. The Times has simply begun their scorched earth offensive in favor of their preferred leftist presidential candidate.

Hang tough John!

To whom is this story a big deal, besides the news whores? This is a guy who divorced his disabled wife and married a rich dolly; does anyone really care if he’s sleeping with the help?

The Democrats and liberal Republicans have removed these issues from the political discussion, for the most part. No one cares.

Puh-leese.

This “scandal” is such a non-scandal. And this is just the beginning…wait until after the conventions…the media is going to do all it can to discredit McCain. Honestly, I don’t think it’s going to make much of a difference. McCain’s not going to lose any support because of hit-pieces like this from the Times, or anyoe else. If anything, it’ll rally more conservatives behind McCain.

I am really surprised with how fast and thorough McCain’s camp has responded. It certainly is a change-up from the Bush admin. They never responded to anything. This story broke late last night, and then early this morning McCain’s camp had pages of material released, listing the facts the NYT left out. Then shortly after that, they hold a full blown press conf. Pretty impressive. I still don’t think I can vote for him…yet…but one good thing about someone who has lived by the media in the past, is that they know how important it is to get in front of a story.

This is just it, folks. Many have said McCain is too “in” with the Democrats and the liberals. But remember, with that (R) after his name, all bets are off. Any “love affair” (pardon the innuendo) that anyone perceives between McCain and the Dems is over.

THE CHOSEN ONE on February 21, 2008 at 9:54 AM

Heh, this was funny:

McCain: ‘I Would Just Be Shocked That Something Like That Would Occur at The New Republic’
On a conference call, I just asked John McCain if he was familiar with the circumstances of Scott Beauchamp and the allegations of false reports in The New Republic.

McCain had some idea, it seemed, asking, “He is saying that he did some things that he didn’t actually do, is that correct?” I said that was part of it, but the greater controversy was that he had tales of bad behavior on the part of U.S. soldiers, and now there’s some indication those stories don’t check out, and that documents that came out yesterday suggested the magazine had suspicions about his stories for a while, but had not commented publicly.

McCain: I would just be shocked that something like that would occur at The New Republic, that the stories wouldn’t check out.

Me: Senator, you sound like you’re smirking as you say that.

McCain: (laughing) I’m shocked that gambling would be taking place in that establishment.

Snort. And here we have a poster who is thrilled to jump in bed with the NY Times if it hurts McCain. Ya know, it does pay to look at who your bedfellows are stenwin LOL

This won’t force him to “withdraw”. The only other option is Huckabee, and he causes a bigger rift in the party.

Hey, maybe Fred will come storming back in on a white stallion, unite the country, and Congress will abolish the term limit for him! Or, we could live in reality. This report is being recognized as questionable at best, and it’s hardly the worse accusation lobbed against a candidate.

As usual McCain’s army of useful idiots is picking up on the wrong things and running the wrong crusade for their failed candidate.

It’s not the infidelity innuendo that is going to hurt McCain it is the perception of unethical lobbying. This is the MSM teeing up for Abramoff themes not Lewinski themes. Nobody cares if McCain diddled the lobbyists but they do care if he was taking bribes.

McCain didn’t do himself any favors this morning by proclaiming that he never did any special favors for lobbyists. It’s very easy to set up the perception of quid pro quo that’s just the way the system works. By using the declarative never, McCain will be painted as a liar as each and every vote he has made over his long Senate career is matched up with campaign contributions and other public records. The drip-drip-drip of allegations is just starting and McCain’s campaign has already blown it.

The allegations of unethical dealings with lobbyists play right into the hands of Obama’s inexperience with DC power plays. The infidelity is a non-sequitor. The damage by this article is real. Thank you very much you Rudy/McCain Democrats for foisting this dog of a candidate on the party.

No, this plays right smack dab into Obama’s wheelhouse and he will make full use of it. Chuck Todd, on MSNBC — who by the way is the rare voice of reason and insight on that besotted network — made a great point. Its not so much the allegation of a ROMANTIC liason with a lobbyist that may hurt McCain, its the allegation of a liason with a LOBBYIST that will hurt.

Obama’s whole campaign is against Washington insiders who abuse influence and how he wants to clean out the whole lot of them. This story plays in to McCain’s longstanding relationships with lobbyists of all stripes and sexes and shows how deep in with the established power structure McCain is.

Obama can use this story to tie McCain to corrupt LOBBYISTS regardless of whether the relation was sexual or not.

That is why this story is so radioactive even if its a bunch of malarkey…. and maybe it is really a SET UP for the OBAMA campaign as much as anything else.

Weight of Glory, read this Bill Bennett piece:

There is a great deal of difference between Senators McCain and Clinton (and Obama), and those records become important as we recognize a few simple facts: We are in an existential war against Islamic terrorists throughout the world. This very week, Senator Clinton was asked what her first act in office would be. She stated that first act would be the beginning of the withdrawal of our troops from Iraq within 60 days. Her first act. That is a surrender to the enemy – there is no other way to portray such a withdrawal and there is no other way it will be portrayed by our enemies and other observers around the world.

Second, we come to the realization that at least one Supreme Court justice is about to retire, and several others will be over age 70 come January 2009. Do we really think the nominees Senator McCain or Clinton (or Obama ) would appoint will be no different?

Let’s go to their records, to the very time-period opponents of Senator McCain cite in their indictment of him.

McCain voted to defund Planned Parenthood last year, Clinton didn’t and would likely expand Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer funding.

McCain voted to ban partial-birth abortion, Clinton didn’t and would likely reverse the partial-birth abortion ban.

McCain voted for Roberts and Alito and made the case for them in the media, Clinton didn’t.

McCain has never voted for a tax increase, Clinton will increase taxes.

McCain will continue the Bush tax cuts, Clinton will end them.

McCain will end pork-barrel spending, Clinton supports the endowment of projects like the Woodstock Museum with taxpayer funding.

McCain will not cut and run in Iraq, Clinton will work with Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senator Harry Reid to do just that.

McCain sponsored legislation to keep the Fairness Doctrine from rearing its head again, Clinton has not and has signaled moves to revive it.

As for those who have taken to labeling Senator McCain a liberal, we reject that.

A liberal does not have a zero rating from NARAL and a 17-percent voting record with the AFL-CIO (the same rating as Sen. Jim DeMint, by way of comparison).

If women stayed home where they belong and out of the workforce this kind of thing wouldn’t happen! ;-)

Where are the feminists coming to Ms. Iseman’s defense? She was only doing her job in a mans world right? Why the talk of impropriety?

ctmom on February 21, 2008 at 10:21 AM

The moderates, independents and conservatives on this story:

“ZZZZZzzzzzzzz….”

Saltysam on February 21, 2008 at 10:14 AM

Agreed. Moderates and independents will wonder what’s new about a hit piece from the NYT. Basically, Zzzzzz. But McCain’s appeal to these folks is already strong. It’s the conservative base that he needs to rally, and this might be the perfect vehicle for it.

petefrt on February 21, 2008 at 10:22 AM

The fact that the NYT is not responding to requests tells me they probably did not want to run the story. Does TNR have something on them?

And yes, Huck still smells.

Connie on February 21, 2008 at 10:23 AM

No surprise from the Slimes. I guess the “endorsement” didn’t mean too much. It’s interesting that they are starting sooo early to take down the GOP nominee.

Funny….I thought when Clinton was absolutely caught with his pants down the cry was “It’s his personal life and has nothing to do with his ability to be President”. Obvioulsy the double standard applies depending you a person’s party affiliation.

libhater on February 21, 2008 at 10:25 AM

Where are the NYT stories on Hillary’s close, very close, very attractive personal assistant and Edwards love child?

Didn’t bear further investigation?

benrand on February 21, 2008 at 10:26 AM

The New York Times made it a point to endorse McCain as the GOP candidate and NOW they publicly question his ethics. Does anyone else smell the stench of a major US newspaper trying to tilt an election?

rosewaning on February 21, 2008 at 10:27 AM

ctmom The first time a story like this really, really got to me was when these same people were shopping affair rumors about George Herbert Walker Bush because he had a top aide who happened to be an attractive woman who worked long hours with him. Thanks for keeping that glass ceiling intact, liberal media! If the male boss is terrified of working closely with smart, trustworthy females because of what might show up in the NY Times, well, how exactly do women make it into the executive suite (except as Peter Principle affirmative action hires who just make us all look incompetent…..hmmm Michelle Obama maybe?)

funky chicken on February 21, 2008 at 10:29 AM

Either Mav or NYT will walk the gallos, probably by the end of the day. You all know who I’m rooting for.

THE CHOSEN ONE on February 21, 2008 at 10:30 AM

Not a McCainiac…never have been and never will be. I was even considering sitting this election out…but…when the NYT attacks McCain, esecially with a story as weak as this one, I will at least take another look at him. Maybe I won’t sit this one out after all.

sdd on February 21, 2008 at 10:31 AM

rosewaning, the NY Times was going to savage any GOP POTUS nominee no matter what. C’mon why are people acting like this is a surprise?

McCain obviously knew it was going to happen as he is prepared with a strong response, unlike Bush with the stupid 20 year old DWI thing among other stupid accusations.

funky chicken on February 21, 2008 at 10:31 AM

NYT Editorial Boardroom Discussion:

“C’Mon people! We need dirty diversions, NOW! The Democrat nomination process is about to get really ugly, while the GOP is going through a unity process!”

Saltysam on February 21, 2008 at 10:14 AM

Very possible. That was my thought last night. I’m wondering now if there isn’t a little more to the story that has nothing or little to do with McCain.

Connie on February 21, 2008 at 10:31 AM

rosewaning on February 21, 2008 at 10:27 AM

That goes without saying. Remember the editor openly claimed he deliberately exposed national security secrets to counter the President of the United States. I think that proves the Slimes has elected themselves ruler of the country.

benrand on February 21, 2008 at 10:26 AM

The point is that McCain claims to be the “standard bearer” against lobbying influence. This story, if true, is about quid pro quo… sex for lobbiest favors. The fact is, he DID write the letters and the legislation for this lobbiest – so, on first glance, the story seems more true than not. -to me anyway.

stenwin77 on February 21, 2008 at 10:34 AM

sdd, you don’t have to be a McCainiac to see that allowing Obama to have the Oval Office and a libdem majority in both houses of Congress is a bad idea.

The choice is McCain or Obama. I was a big Fredhead, sent lots of money (well, lots for me). But he’s no longer an option. And Obama would be a disaster.

Do you want sinusitis or terminal cancer?

funky chicken on February 21, 2008 at 10:34 AM

Rush Limbaugh SOOOO predicted this…that the media would turn on McCain once he had the nomination secured (perhaps their endorsement was their little effort to help speed it along).

McCain ought to immediately announce that the NYT can take back their endorsement, because he would not want the endorsement of such a slimy yellow journaist rag.

Blaise on February 21, 2008 at 10:34 AM

funky chicken on February 21, 2008 at 10:34 AM

The choice is more like pancreatic cancer or colorectal cancer.

stenwin77 on February 21, 2008 at 10:37 AM

I am really surprised with how fast and thorough McCain’s camp has responded. It certainly is a change-up from the Bush admin. They never responded to anything. This story broke late last night, and then early this morning McCain’s camp had pages of material released, listing the facts the NYT left out. Then shortly after that, they hold a full blown press conf. Pretty impressive. I still don’t think I can vote for him…yet…but one good thing about someone who has lived by the media in the past, is that they know how important it is to get in front of a story.

Weight of Glory on February 21, 2008 at 9:40 AM

To respond to your comment, I think the one misdeed of which W has not been accused by the NY Slimes is cheating on Laura. I bet W would come out swinging if someone tried to hit him on that; all of the other criticisms of him have had a scintilla of basis (I’m not saying truth, just basis) on his job itself. Such a criticism would be 100% personal, though, and he doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who would take it sitting down. Remember that, eight years ago, we were all talking about what a potty mouth W had to the media, and guess who has that rap on him now?

Are you nuts? I liked Romney too… But he lost fair and square. Have you listened to the democratic nominee “Barrack gonna save us through sweet sounding communism Obama”? This guy is going to be cake to beat in the general. As weak as they are these plagarism videos will stick for two reasons:
A lot of time until the general and he has nothing else going for him except being a good speaker.(and I mean nothing!)
Even his own supporters cant name an accomplishment. You think older Dems who support Hil are going to switch to Obama over a decorated older vet for some oblique idea of “hope”? Keep callin McCain old see how it helps you Obama.
Besides I know a lot of old school dems (ala zell miller) who are going to vote against obama just because “young” voters like him.

So put down the cr@#k romney pipe and come back to reality

tottoritodd on February 21, 2008 at 10:44 AM

Let me explain it so that some of the slower folks here (stenwin, et al) understand it.

The left views all all conservatives as gun toting, bible thumping, bucktoothed, racist, rednecks that can be easily manipulated by planting flase stories about infidelity.

The same NYT that rallied around BJ Clinton, now is ginning up a story on Mccain.

They are trying to play the conservatives for fools while they giggle into their lattes. And sadly, a few on this site are eating the crap from the NYT and saying “MMMMM This tastes good!”

funky chicken on February 21, 2008 at 10:20 AM

Thanks! I have never believed that getting McCain was equal to getting Obama or Hillary. They are observably further down the socialism path than McCain. I was unclear in my comment; it was in response to Limerick specifically and to many McCain supporters generally. And I was trying to communicate that the arguments by his supporters of “well now that he is getting beat on by the Times, let’s rally behind him” aren’t persuasive for me. I’m sorry but I’m not there yet: he restricted the 1st amendment…that’s big man. He has bought into global warming, and is willing to restrict free markets…that’s big. He wants to close down GITMO, not for any objective reason, but because of the appearance of it. Our troops have had crap, urine, and semen thrown on them by those scumbags down there, and for McCain to accept the premise that there is something inherently wrong with what WE are doing, really pisses me off. And finally, what he did in regards with immigration, how he went about doing it, and the things that he and others said about us who were against it was very very troubling. These are all things that simply cannot be swept under the rug because the NYT is now showing its true colors towards McCain. Like I said, I’m not there yet, and I might not be by Nov.

Weight of Glory on February 21, 2008 at 10:45 AM

On stenwin77:

I have been a VERY harsh critic of McCain.

But your amateurish posing (that’s right posing, not posting) on his board are so transparent, that you give yourself away.

The Left’s biggest achille’s heel is their constant, therefore predictable, underestimation the intelligence of conservatives.

Saltysam on February 21, 2008 at 10:47 AM

Same old standard political scandal mud. Remember the DWI story right before the 2000 election? This stuff comes with the territory in Washington.

If you want Mr. Clean, you should have supported Romney.

What do you mean “give myself away”? I make no secret that I’m a Romney supporter. John McCain is a very flawed candidate – now you’re seeing that. I don’t happen to think he can win.

Yeah, it’s transparent, cause I’m not hiding it.

McCain CAN NOT win against Obama.

stenwin77 on February 21, 2008 at 10:52 AM

Weight of Glory, and Obama will be worse on all those issues that McCain is wrong on too. Obama’s wrong where McCain is right, and Obama is more wrong where McCain is wrong.
