Heart-ache: “Major” poll shows Hillary and Obama tied … in Texas; Update: WaPo/ABC

posted at 4:35 pm on February 21, 2008 by Allahpundit

Not sure which one yet. Unless it’s ARG or Zogby, does it matter? The Clenis has already staked the campaign’s fortunes on winning the state so between this and McCain’s non-scandal scandal, we may yet see the Democratic race over before ours is.

Two links for you as we wait for tonight’s debate to see if the Glacier will, in fact, melt away quietly or whether she’s going to go for the throat (as 50% expect she will) before Obama puts her away. Remember, she’s pitching herself as the candidate whose well-honed managerial expertise he can’t hope to replicate. First, the NYT:

Even now, after a string of defeats, her advisers are divided over how to proceed as they head toward what could be her last stands, in Ohio and Texas on March 4.

Some — led by Mark Penn, her chief strategist — have been pushing Mrs. Clinton to draw sharper and deeper contrasts with Mr. Obama, arguing that she has no other option, campaign officials said.

Others, particularly Mandy Grunwald, her media adviser, have pushed for a less aggressive approach, arguing that attacks would not help Mrs. Clinton’s campaign in an environment in which she is increasingly appearing to struggle, aides said…

In a speech in New York on Wednesday, Mrs. Clinton said, in sometimes stark language, that Mr. Obama did not have the credentials to lead the world during a dangerous time. Yet rather than taking the scorched-earth approach that had been urged by some of her associates, much of what she said echoed the criticisms she has aimed at him throughout the campaign.

Unable to decide between her advisors, she sticks with the approach that’s guaranteed not to work. The LAT:

The internal friction over Clinton’s message was never fully resolved. A schism persists to this day. Some people close to the campaign’s inner circle believe Clinton should make more of an effort to show a warmer, softer side before the March 4 primaries. Her next opportunity to present herself to a national audience comes today with a debate against Obama in Austin, to be carried by CNN and Univision.

As they look for where the campaign went wrong, some people knowledgeable about it said that Hillary Clinton bore responsibility because she did not heed calls to limit the overarching power Penn wielded within the brain trust as both its pollster and message-maker.

Some campaign staff did not have access to complete polling data from Penn’s research, meaning it was difficult to challenge the messages he was crafting based on those polls, according to a person familiar with the campaign’s workings.

Aides went to Clinton repeatedly with these concerns, but she stuck by Penn and kept him in his dual roles, according to people familiar with the campaign.

She stuck by Patti Solis Doyle, too. How’d that work out? She’s a cronyist, just like Bush is, and like Bush she’s paying the price for letting her loyalty turn blind even in the face of disaster. If you want to see just how much of a disaster in numerical terms, read down a few paragraphs into this piece. You won’t need a calculator.

Oh, and those superdelegates she’s counting on? It’s payback time. Exit question: How nasty does she get tonight? Same old “experience” crap or is it Rezko/plagiarism/your-wife-hates-America time?

Update: Ambinder says it’s a WaPo/ABC poll.

How nasty does she get tonight?

Might as well fire all barrels.
Could Obama get a sympathy vote?

Considering: A) She’s a Clinton, B) She’s planned this for her entire political life, I don’t see her going down easily and conceding to Obama. I can see her getting nasty in the coming days, using whatever necessary.

It won’t work, of course.

amerpundit on February 21, 2008 at 4:41 PM

Still, Obama may win the all the delegates, but at the convention Clinton could win the nomination still.
It’s a long way till August and I don’t see her or Obama leaving the race till then.

Goes negative. She’s Hillary Clinton, after all.

How nasty does she get tonight?

If she doesn’t blast him with both barrels, it means she’s already conceded defeat.

I would now officially burn in Hell, except that is just froze over. To quote my decision (with this explanation):

“OK; I did it. I went to the poll and cast my vote for the Hildebeast; I now have my causus card in my wallet for March 4th. A squadron of pigs flew in formation overhead, as Satan’s ice hockey team lined to vote behind me. My stomach hasn’t felt like this since I accompanied my coroner Dad to a suicide scene after a steak dinner where the guy used both barrels of a shotgun on his head.”

ANYTHING to muck up the Dems this year.

Or would you prefer to watch Obama start his internship as POTUS by trying to figure out how to deal with the aftermath of the Israelis taking care of this little problem between the election and Bush leaving the White House?

Not to be impolitic, but does it depend what time of the month or is she past that…

What does she gain by being nice? So people will think she’s a warm hearted loser? That ship sailed long ago. Time to get tough and show the American voters you are CiC material, Hillary. Think about all that humiliation you endured while Billy Jeff was chasing skirts and you stood by with a fixed smile on your face, so you could have your day in the sun. It’s all slipping away. It was all for nothing if you don’t act now. Go for the throat. You’ll never have another chance if you don’t do it tonight. YES YOU CAN!

Did the NYtimes release the bimbos on McCain to shore up votes for Hillary in the primary? Why not? If people become disgusted with McCain, will they switch from voting for McCain in the primary to voting for Hillary in the primary, thereby squashing the Messiah? I question the timing of all this.

She’ll hope for a gaffe when the Serbia/Kosovo thing comes up.

If she’s really lucky, Obama will say “hard work” more than once in a short period of time, and she will accuse him of sounding like Bush.

Mrs. Clinton has nothing to lose. She must unleash the sh!t-storm. If it sticks she may win as a result. If it does not, she will lose. But holding to her current strategy, she would lose anyway.

As to why Mrs. Clinton would stick with the same game plan so long past the pull date, you have to remember the tremendous need the Clintons have to always be loved and always be right. To deviate from their strategy would mean that they would have to admit that they were wrong, and that furthermore, their previous success might not have been a result of great strategy and masterful political skill, but rather because of luck combined with a weak opponent and Perot siphoning off 19% of the vote.

Mrs. Clinton would rather lose than face the fact that maybe she and Bill are just not so loved and brilliant as they have been telling themselves they are all these years.

If she doesn’t come out wearing George Patton’s ivory handled revolvers then it’s over. The ‘nice-guy’ approach, at this point in her campaign, is about as dumb as it gets.

Boobs for Obama

Maybe this was an attempt to help her with independents and moderate liberals. The ones that don’t want to run from Iraq on January 20,2009.

If so, we will hear those kinds of ideas expressed in tonights debate.

Let’s see…….

Popcorn, check.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!

Woohoooo! Barring something unexpected, she’s going to have to steal the nomination. Good!

If she can’t steal it, then she’ll have to be Obama’s VP candidate. Nightmare.

Here’s my scenario for what will transpire in the debate tonight:

The moderator asks Sen Clinton a good question, to which Clinton does her cackle laugh. She gives her cackle but then abruptly stops in a straight face. Sen Clinton proceeds to scan to the left and right of the stage, then up and down. She leans forward on her podium towards the moderator and says “I’ll be back.” After saying this, she walks off stage.

There is a long moment of silence as everybody is wondering what the heck just happened. Then there is the sound of a car starting, its engine rev’ing, then the squealing of tires. In the next moment, an old Ford POS barrels out from where Sen Clinton had left. At a blinding speed, the Ford smashes over both podiums, including Sen Obama, killing him instantly, before smashing to a stop by hitting some of the stage’s supports. Everyone is completely shocked at the event, unable to move from witnessing such a horrible murder. At the same time, the millions watching freeze whatever they’re doing and stare at the TV, waiting in anticipation at what will transpire next. Everyone stares in wide-eyed amazement as the driver door opens and Sen Hillary Clinton steps out.

With utmost precision, Sen Clinton finishes getting out of the car and walks around to the front of the stage. The only sound you can hear in the room is Hillary walking over some broken wood and other debris on the floor of the stage. She stares directly into the camera, glowing red eyes burn bright as she speaks in a monotonous tone:

“I am Skynet!”

And now you know why we haven’t had a war with machines yet, they’re waiting for their leader to attain power!
