Video: Plucky loser’s sour grapes turning more sour by the minute
posted at 3:14 pm on February 20, 2008 by Allahpundit
“It seems that Republicans have decided that elections are a messy thing,” he laments, after months of debates and eight weeks of primary after primary after primary after primary. Unwilling to crap on McCain — who, if you add all of Mitt’s delegates to his column, has already clinched — here we find Huck near the end of the road doing what he does best: Crapping on the party and in particular the mythical “establishment” that likes nothing more than keeping God-fearing blue-collar average joes like himself down. I said my piece about his brand of resentment politics in the update here two months ago; it’s nice to see him staying true to himself even at the bitter end.
Exit question: Is this rhetoric really doing McCain a favor on balance?

I think McCAin pulled his offer for Huck to be his vp so he is trying to get as many delagates to force McCain to chooice him.

Nope. It’s a rally cry for evangelicals to take a dump on the GOP come November since we wouldn’t elect “one of their own”.
Religion Baiting ’08.

natesnake on February 20, 2008 at 3:22 PM
Allah,
Your side won. You’ve made it clear there is no place in the GOP for social conservatives and “Jesus Freaks.” Your side is actively punishing those Republicans that disagree with you for daring to get GWB elected to two terms. You’ve nominated the guy who you think was robbed of his rightful place in the party in 2000.
When is your side going to stop the vendetta and start working toward winning in November? I “get it” that you loathe conservatives that don’t fit the Rudy/McCain brand of Democrat-lite. I “get it” that you hate Christians that give more than lip service to their faith. I even “get it” that you arrogant crowd thinks that they can win without building bridges to the conservative movement. Fact of the matter is that John McCain will never win the Presidency without the support of the very people you despise.
I’d give some thought and analysis to that. Obama is going to romp through the South with the devestation of General Sherman if you continue the gratitous attacks on evangelicals and they opt to stay home instead of “holding” their nose and voting for the pathetic loser you people have foisted on the party.

I’d expect nothing less from a Huckabee supporter.
Allahpundit on February 20, 2008 at 3:24 PM
What this dude neglects to notice is that Bush Jr. was an evangelical as well. Somehow he found his way to the White House.

What’s really sad is that neither Edwards or Huck were smart enough 4 weeks ago to parlay their losing ground into a primo post election position. They both squandered their chance to be a king-maker. The Obama/McCain jugernaut is running full speed ahead.
natesnake on February 20, 2008 at 3:29 PM
The same guy Allah usually attacks, and instead supported Romney over?
As opposed to Huckabee, who is a tax-raising, nanny-stater who used to say opposition to McCain’s amnesty was partially driven by racism?

Delegates Needed to Win 1,191
John McCain 918
Mike Huckabee 217
McCain has over 4 times as many Delegates..

Hey, Huck, do you or do you not ride around in private jets? Yes? Yeah, so shut up. You have no chance of winning. Pack it up and go home to preach your gospel, we don’t want to hear it anymore.

With good reason.
I cannot wait for Huck to be gone. I hate McCain, and his actions taken after his 2000 loss to GWB, but Huck is just poison to the conservative movement. And worse he sugarcoats his poison with religion. The bigot needed to go a long time ago.

I liked Huck, but he needs to get the heck out of the race for the good of the country.
On the other hand, as someone who never supported Romney, right now Huck sounds to me just like all of those Mitt supporters did when it became aparent that he wasn’t going to win. He’s whining about different issues, but the tone is the same.

His only reason for running was to stop Mitt, the Mormon; now that has vanished and he’s desperately trying not to look foolish, and failing badly.

Oh, if only the majority of the Republican party could just hold their noses and vote for Huckabee, this rift would be healed! Salvation at last! Any vote against Huckabee is a vote against Christianity and true conservatism, as there can be no other reason why Huckabee might suck as a choice (immigration, nanny state, taxes, et al.)! Allah, you and your like-minded terrible puppet masters have ruined the vision of the Republican party for a small fraction of voters presented with two choices. Shame! Embrace the idenity politics before its too late!

UpChuckaBee just exudes sleaze. How could anybody actually believe that the Republicans are afraid of elections in the primary process. Even now, this wienee has less delegates and wins than Mitt Romney who bowed out a long time ago.
If his supporters had brains, they would be embarrassed.
Roger Waters on February 20, 2008 at 3:39 PM
You know, if Jesus had just come out and endorsed Huckabee…appeared on the platform with him… perhaps he’d have stood a chance. As it is, it appears God wants to annoint McCain rather than the minister. Go figure.

W is ever so humble; never wearing his religion on his sleeve.
Huckabee is sanctimonious and extremely egotistical. I couldn’t stand him the first time I heard him. I called him “Republican Jimmy Carter” way before Ann Coulter did.
I heard Mort Kondracke say the other day that he is staying in just to try to get more delegates than Mitt.
Not only is Huck jealous of Mitt, he showed during the campaign that he is an Anti-Mormonite.

Why don’t you people leave Huck alone. If he wants to drag this out to the end it is his call. I would not want him for the next president but then I don’t want McCain either. Having to vote for the least undesirable candidate is not my idea of how to run an election.
duff65 on February 20, 2008 at 3:44 PM
Because he’s a public figure and a candidate for president, perhaps?
Slublog on February 20, 2008 at 3:46 PM
Dear Reverend Huckabee:
After the Republican nomination officially goes to that other guy in the race, I humbly suggest you go on a soul-searching trip, engage in your missionary roots, and preach the gospel in places that really need it like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, or Saudi Arabia. Be sure to carry that Bible with you, it’ll really come in handy.

Huck is only making the turnover process harder, longer and more protracted for his supporters.
In football terms, you never have a moral victory, a loss is still a loss.
Getting more delegates than, someone else trying to get second place, is still a loss..
Gaining more yards on the ground in a football game, and losing 49-10, isn’t a victory.

I still miss Fred.
I think we need to have a HA survey, now that the dust is settling, aside from the odd childish rant here and there. Who were the least obnoxious fanboys of this primary season?
TexasDan on February 20, 2008 at 4:13 PM
So, he’s met McCain’s supporters?
“Get in line” and “suck it up” being their usual defense of McCain. Odd that their defense doesn’t cover any of the topics being discussed, or the problems, or any reason to change your mind.
That portion of the speech… seems quite accurate for the current situation in republican Politics. Dissension in the ranks is not tolerated. Any disagreement on policies will be met with name-calling and derogatory statements and no actual debate or argument.
Kind of like McCain did during the immigration “debates” where all his detractors were “racist, nativists” who “didn’t have America’s best interests at heart”.
Odd that it was ok in the eyes of most Conservatives to disagree with McCain then, but disagreeing now is simply being a “bad conservative”, idiot, childish, whiner, closet Democrat, wishy-washy, all-or-nothing, and several other names… while still not engaging in any debate or discussion on the actual topics.
Topics like the First Amendment, global warming, Gitmo, Immigration, Constitutional issues, intel evidence being available to terrorists, gas taxes, limited power generation and structure, ethanol vs. food prices and cropland, ANWAR, gun shows, etc. will all be avoided, and any who express concern will be called a name from the prior paragraph.
Good to see that the McCain supporters are really taking their leaders ideals to heart. The tirades, name-calling, invective, and avoidance of any actual debate will certainly make this an easy choice for the undecideds in the actual election.
gekkobear on February 20, 2008 at 4:15 PM
Who the hell are you people talking about when you say “we picked McCain”? There’s about 5 people total at Hot Air who’ve had a single thing nice to say about McCain in about 12 months.
Lehosh on February 20, 2008 at 4:25 PM
I don’t particularly like Huckabee but I like him a lot more than ShAmnesty “Secret Democrat” McCain. His politics are too damned liberal (I remember how he felt about criminal aliens and Tyson Foods before he needed to look conservative) and I don’t like the fact he only climbed on the cross in an attempt to ride it to the WH but exactly why should he have to drop out of the race just to make it easier for McCain? As an old growth conservative I’m for anything and everything that might make McCain make concessions on closing Gitmo and either spilling our military counter tango intel or letting the ragtangos go free and granting amnesty to everyone that can walk over our unsecured borders. Guess it doesn’t matter much since McCain isn’t going to win anyhow.
This type of “get out of my way” attitude is exactly what is shaping up for Hillary on the left and honestly that is exactly what we don’t want… Obama.

Were it not for csdeven, I’d say the Romney people.
Esthier on February 20, 2008 at 4:25 PM
Allah, Allah, Allah,
That is all you can say because deep down you know highhopes is RIGHT. I could not support Huckabee once he started attacking Romney’s religion because it had nothing to do with the Presidency. Many of you people here launched an onslaught on Huckabee for doing so. Now you attack him for being a Christian and wanting to keep conservative issues on the table. The hypocrisy here actually sounds rather Clinton-esque. Am I logged on to move-on.org? McCain cannot and will not win if he does not have the conservative base (and that means evangelicals too) in his corner!
RedLizard64 on February 20, 2008 at 4:29 PM

Travis1 on February 20, 2008 at 4:29 PM
Huckabee is precisely the sort of poorly-educated boob that the MSM loves to present as a typical Republican. And sadly, for those of us uncomfortable with the spectacle that Huckabee is making of himself, it isn’t likely to go away any time soon. Huckabee, an obliging treasure trove of long-cherished MSM stereotypes, is absolutely certain to become their new GOP go-to guy on all matters foreign and domestic.
Does that answer your question, Allah?
Infidoll on February 20, 2008 at 4:29 PM
Well, while I found myself a Huckabee supporter on the basis of his ideas on consumption tax, the fact that he planned to use the increase in federal revenue from that to improve social programs gave me the same big-government willies I’ve gotten from, oh, yeah, every politician to run for President in about 20 years. So, in 2028, when I’m out of the military and old enough, I announce my candidacy for President, with the following slogan: Steve XXXXXX for President, because I don’t give a crap about your problems, I just want to get the government out of your life.
Spc Steve on February 20, 2008 at 4:33 PM

TroubledMonkey on February 20, 2008 at 4:35 PM
Uh huh. Hot Air commenters attacked Huckabee for being a Christian and keeping conservative issues on the table. That’s exactly how history happened.
Conservative issues like calling immigration enforcers anti-Life heretics… wait, no not that one.
Conservative issues like being soft of crime… oh, not that either.
Conservative issues like being completely ignorant of foreign policy… dangit, not that one either!
Conservative issues like identity politics and class warfare… getting closer? hmm.
Yeah, Huckabee is just too damn conservative and Christian for people here in the HotAir establishment.
Lehosh on February 20, 2008 at 4:36 PM
That whole Vice Presidency theory is a load of hogwash; by now Huckabee’s blown what little chance he may have once had at that.
So I’m perfectly happy to take Huckabee at his word: that he’s staying in the race when there is no chance of victory solely to make a point about how much the “Republican Establishment” is trying to “break the arms” of Christians.
Based on that, I see no reason to suspect Huckabee plans to stop doing this once he loses the primary. Essentially, he’s announcing that he plans to take over McCain’s job as a thorn in the side of the Republican Party.
Does anybody else see the sweet irony in all this?
logis on February 20, 2008 at 4:41 PM

Balderdash! Huck was attacked because he is trying to pass as a conservative when his record says he is not on almost everything except abortion and the 2nd amendment. He used his faith as a disguise to hide his meaness and bigotry. He’s a faker and a closet liberal.

There’s no doubt Huckabee is hated by the Republican machine because of his “outsider” status and his Christian faith. We all witnessed them who preached Christian and family values for decades suddenly turning away from the man who embodies these very qualities and puts them into action. I truly believe Rush, Hannity, Drudge, Coulter, etc, have helped destroy the conservative movement in America. This election exposed them as NOT part of the people, but rather part of the news media who own Hollywood and all the sources of information — a brain washing and poisoning people

Hollowpoint on February 20, 2008 at 5:06 PM
The part about attacking him because of his christianity was sincere the part about conservativism was somehwhat sarcastic. What I am concerned about is that if Huck drops out of the race (as he says before his cheerleaders through down their pom-poms) that McCain who is only conservative on the WOT and marginally conservative on Taxes will suddenly be the all defining being for conservatism…Huckabee is keeping to other conservtive principles in play Pro-life issues and immigration…NO McCain is not going to talk about immigration in totality. He has acquiesed (sp)on securing the border…but his policy of confering with juan hernandez onhow to allow the 12-20 million ILLEGAL ALIENS stay is not conservative at all!

I supported GWB against Kerry. I’ll never forget when he won his second term… the looks on the Demofascists faces… they thought Kerry had it won…the looks on their faces when he didn’t. Liberals were devastated. However, Bush has been a DISASTER! He has done very little for Christians. Plus, his judgement scares me. Dubai ports scandal. Immigration. Remember he said Vladimir Putin is a friend of the United States? You may recall Bush’s famous remark in 2001 that he’d looked into Putin’s eyes and gained “a sense of his soul.” That is crazy. Putin is a sworn enemy of the United States. Bush is part of the Republican Machine.

For all Bush’s faults (and there are many), how can anyone suggest he’s ignored the Christian base? Faith-based initiatives, abortion, gay marriage, the Schivo controversy- he’s taken the social-con side every single time. What more would you have a President do short of implementing the theocracy (something liberals have accused him of trying from the start)?
The reason so many of us oppose Huckster is that his record and statements all indicate that he’d be even a bigger disappointment than Bush. Suggesting that opposition if based on his religious beliefs or social conservativism is completely ignorant and unsupported by the facts or history.
Hollowpoint on February 20, 2008 at 5:24 PM
I wonder if Huck saw the results from Washington yesterday and that’s why he’s so crabby:
48.90% McCain
21.51% Huckabee
19.75% Romney
After dropping out of the race weeks ago, Romney nearly tied Huck in votes…hmmmmm…..
laurendap on February 20, 2008 at 5:30 PM
I am not a Bush hater. I pray for the man. But, what significant policy change has made with respect to abortion and gay marriage? Okay, he’s taken the the social-con side… yeah, yeah… uhm, okay…. but what about changes? Another Christian issue, he is putting pressure on little tiny Israel to give away more of it’s land to the Arabs for peace. He is pressuring them to establish a Palestinian state so he could claim a foreign policy achievement in his eight years as president. Thing is, the Bible says that the land of Israel is God’s land, He owns it, and we shouldn’t give it away to anyone, especially not to the Arabs who hate Israel! This land for peace is crazy! (Genesis 12:1-3) Huckabee is the only candidate running who believes Israel should keep all it’s land. Huck’s the ONLY one who takes this biblical stand.
I don’t buy that at all. This is rhetoric. Huck’s the only true conservative, a man of honor, pro-life, pro-gun rights, less taxes, securing the borders, fighting terrorism, etc., etc. McCain is waaaaay worse on these issues.
