A televised addendum to today’s NR piece. MM makes a nice point contrasting Obama’s “just words?” indignation towards Team Hillary with his “just words” defense of his wife, but beyond that there’s not much to say. The woman made a Kinsleyan gaffe. End of story.
But since we’ve been beating up on the Messiah pretty good today and memory-refreshening’s suddenly all the rage, let me leave you with this gentle reminder: Michelle Obama’s not the only person left in the race to express this rather more nuanced version of patriotism.
Update: Fan mail from her appearance:
Hello hotair news desk,
Please tell Michelle Malkin…She does not represent the Asian Community, since the Asian Community does not recognize her as Asian…
The Absolute Truth!
Thank You

Wow, the ‘Asian Community’ has spoken! When did she say she represented the ‘Asian Community’ again? Doesn’t matter, because I don’t think MM has ever represented herself as anything other than an American. So, as a representative of the ‘American American’ community, I think I can honestly say that she does represent us.

Who’s supposed to be “representing” the “asian community”? And why does it need “representing”?
This is the problem with these communities. They’re not Americans, they’re “Asian-Americans”! Bunch of idiots!

“Asian Community” ?? these people are sad. They have to look at everything through a racial lens.

Don’t look now, but the “enlightened Leftists” at HUFFPO are in-fighting about Hillary vs Michelle.
SERIOUSLY, y’all, one of the TOLERANT Hillary loving LIBERALS in the comment thread ACTUALLY SUGGESTS THAT MICHELLE OBAMA LOOKS LIKE “ZIRA” FROM PLANET OF THE APES.
So it begins. Instead of Che Guevara T-shirts, the Clinton campaign is already printing new hip clothing. Can’t you just see it?
Score one for the First Black First Lady and her tolerance of the SECOND Black First Lady. TYPICAL.

What Michelle Obama said was embarrassing because she was talking about her husband’s success being the source of her pride.
However, I’ve heard black colleagues and women speak about Obama or Hillary’s campaign’s as making them feel that somehow they are more fully a part of the country.
I have friends with daughters, and these Dads dislike Hillary and would vote against her. Yet, there is a part of them that thinks a female president would give their daughters the confidence that, well, they could grow up to be president.
dedalus on February 20, 2008 at 7:46 PM

Jumping to conclusions is silly.

As if its a group of ten people in a garage. What gives you the right to be the universal representative of the “Asian Community”? By the way, the Hot Air “news desk” consists of AP at his desk at 2am playing with his iPhone and digging through Google News for Yankee Hate propaganda. Or BP putting up anything Cowboy/Romo/Jessica Simpson related.

QUOTE OF THE THREAD. WELL SAID, KINI.
seejanemom on February 20, 2008 at 7:49 PM
Much like the “Obama is stealing speeches” thread, this is not a fair attack.
At MM.com the video of her entire statement is provided. She goes on to say that she is referring to a feeling of hope and lack of division amongst Americans.
She made that same speech twice on the same day and the first time she said “really proud of…”
Just to be clear: I do not agree with Obama’s policies. I do not think that he will make a good leader for this country, but baseless attacks just make us look petty.
Remember: The Boy Who Cried Wolf.

Sorry, I think you missed the entire thread here. It doesn’t matter who it was (and yeah, even if it was a white (false flag) NAZI, Paulnut (same thing), Chinese communist…etc, etc, etc) doesn’t matter. I don’t have to know who it came from and I won’t change my opinion of it. It was a piece of moronic IP.
AUINSC on February 20, 2008 at 7:55 PM
I think you/those you are commenting about are making a serious error. There is nothing wrong with Hillary’s sex, or Obama’s race. There is everything wrong with the content of their characters. To consider either for any other reason is to be a democrat.
JiangxiDad on February 20, 2008 at 7:56 PM
Well, Michelle mostly does represent me. Very seldom do I disagree with the boss.
d1carter on February 20, 2008 at 7:57 PM
I know a young lady who was upset when it looked like Hillary would be the first female president, because SHE (the young lady) wants to be the first female president. She doesn’t need someone else’s accomplishments to give her confidence. She’s got plenty of her own, thank you. ;-)
aero on February 20, 2008 at 7:57 PM
Michelle Malkin represents truth, justice and the American way and very effectively. But as a member of the anonymous community I must say we have no opinion on outside issues.
snaggletoothie on February 20, 2008 at 7:57 PM
Good job Michelle. Contrasting Obama’s just words referring to Hillary with the well spoken words of “Madame President Michelle Obama” was a great point and drives home that fact that at this level of politics, candidates and their surrogates generally say exactly what they intend to say. It’s clear that Michelle Obama has very little pride for our Great Country. After all, they aren’t running for city council.
And the fan mail above (as well as the one at MM.com) are actually pretty sad. Personally, I have no use for “hyphenated Americans”. As John Wayne said years ago, the hyphen only serves to divide us.
Zorro on February 20, 2008 at 7:58 PM
That may be but the leaps in judgment about asians were just as moronic.
Bradky on February 20, 2008 at 7:58 PM

TBinSTL on February 20, 2008 at 8:00 PM
Thanks and nice to see you back again.
I find it amazing then anyone would have the guff to suggest Michelle Malkin speaks for the entire Asian community. That’s a typical liberal tactic to lump any person or group (racial or otherwise) into a single political mindset. The arrogance is appalling.
When Michelle Obama speaks, she telling us who she is. When Barack defends his wifes indefensible statements, he tells us more about their pillow talk.
Kini on February 20, 2008 at 8:01 PM
The “you” refering to the e-mailer, not MM, of course. There is a little irony in someone telling somebody else that they can’t claim to represent a racial/ethinic/religious group, while then proceeding to do it themselves. Which is what the e-mailer did. On another note, when has MM ever claimed to speak for the “Asian Community”? And in a final note, the term “Asian Community” confuses the hell out of me…but that’s for another day.
malan89 on February 20, 2008 at 8:02 PM

They aren’t being irrational if they believe that consequence of Obama or Hillary being President would cause them to be viewed differently by others. I’ve certainly seen the effect on younger women in corporations where there was a female CEO or senior executive.
Some women I know plan to pull the lever for the old white guy in November, but have said that they wish Hillary wasn’t such a liberal.

Good for her. If she’s for small government and lower taxes she may have my vote.
I suppose some women felt snubbed that Sally Ride rather than they got to be the first woman in space, but I’m sure there were other young girls that saw her go up in the shuttle and really understood that they could do it in a way that a dozen Neil Armstrong’s couldn’t convey.
dedalus on February 20, 2008 at 8:16 PM
I just saw this on http://www.dailykos.com
Yes, I go dumpster diving now and then.
As we know, America is a completely perfect and flawless country in which nothing ever goes worng. And anyone who says otherwise, especially if they’re guilty of complaining while black, is required to provide their neck size. O’Reilly doesn’t really think that Michelle Obama needs to be dragged through town and publically hung — so long as she’s not “militant” or “angry.” You know — as long as she’s not one of those uppity negros.
Apparently a radio host can sit there and seriously propose that it’s “legit” to “go on a lynching party” against the wife of an African-American presidential candidate. I’d like to see the definition by which this is not hate speech. On what grounds can either Fox or the radio stations that carry this execrable show justify keeping it on the air?
Some of those “bloggers” over there are fracken nuts.
And apparently have not the first clue as to how demeaning and patronizing they are to black people. Poor little set upon black people who must have their betters at dailykos to defend and nurse them.
MB4 on February 20, 2008 at 8:20 PM

Hello Drive-By E-mailer: Please note that you do not represent the American E-mail community, since the E-mail Community does not recognize you as a legitimate American E-mailer.
Since you started a discussion about credentials: where are yours??? And what right do you have to judge who gets to speak on a given subject??
And why do you assume that each individual American must be trying to represent a larger group composed of only those of the same race and religion?? This very thought process is as un-American as you can get: it is contrary to the ideas expressed in the Declaration of Independence and subsequently enshrined in our culture!!!
We Americans truly believe that “all men are created equal”. Apparently you do not.

You want to live in this country then become an American, and leave your all inclusive rascist BS at the borders.
Americans can be any color, any type any race. They are just color blind, unlike many liberals.
And speaking of rascist, Michelle Obama seems to fit that bill. Any moment I expect her to start shouting “zeig heil”

The, so-called, black community refuses to acknowledge the achievements of those blacks who have attained prominence in a myriad of fields over the past 40 years because they are Republicans.
And now the, so-called, Asian community is marching in lockstep with their black brethren by refusing to acknowledge the achievements of Asians for no other reason that they, too, are Republicans.
How sad it is that liberalism trumps having pride in one’s own.
pocomoco on February 20, 2008 at 8:30 PM
Thank God Michelle does not represent the “Asian community”. Just what the h*ll IS the “Asian community” anyhow? Could the “Asian community” be a code-word for more than 1 billion Chinese people? If I remember right, those 1,000,000,000+ Asians were not permitted to have their own opinions about ANYTHING for a very long time (as long as Chairman Mao was alive). So yes, I am greatly relieved that Michelle and her opinions do not represent the “Asian community.”
As to whether Michelle is Asian or not, my Filipina wife says that Michelle is WAY more Filipina than Ward Churchill is American Indian. (Of course, that’s just my wife’s personal opinion, isn’t it?)

It’s so very interesting that those claiming to speak for the whole Asian community = doesn’t. My advice to the “spokesman” for the Asian community (the person being so totally clueless and most probably being a shill) should read and listen to Michelle Malkin. She is an American first, her ethnicity being of little consequence. That in itself it the true meaning of being an American.
