Video: Bob Bennett dumps on the Times’s hit piece on McCain

Highlights from his appearance on H&C. Pro: He’s a Democrat who represented Billy Jeff during the Lewinsky investigation, so he’s not exactly part of the vast right-wing conspiracy. Con: He’s been representing McCain for the past few months related to this very matter. Go re-read their article; you shouldn’t need Bennett to tell you it’s an inch thin and that inch is made up of little more than innuendo.

Exit question: How would the left react to a Fox News investigation of the Messiah that was as thinly sourced as this?

Update: The boss dreams of angles yet unexplored.

Oh, they’d go ballistic, the mere mention of FNC sends them into a frothing, impotent rage.

Update: The boss dreams of angles yet unexplored.

Hmmm…someone will cover that during the late days of the election in order to depress conservative turnout. Of course, McCain can alleviate that problem by, I know this sounds crazy, but, compromising with conservatives.

Probably a lot like they are in the comments here:

If such a shallow accusation was floated against Obama, the accuser would be labeled racist.

And who is in the tank for the Washington elite, and opposes hope and change.

amerpundit on February 20, 2008 at 10:12 PM

This is pure BS conjured up by the slimiest left wing rag in the country. The New York Slimes can take this garbage and shove it in the collective ears, or the orifice of their choice. Disgusting but not unexpected from that trashy operation.

This may help McCain. Insinuating he’s young and virile enough to….

roux on February 20, 2008 at 10:18 PM

If Fox ran a story similar,Obamanians would be livid,
boycotts, picketting, and it would be a golden opportunity
for the justice dynamic duo Jesse and Al to weasel them
selves in!

Million Man March, marching down to Fox News!

We all saw Mav in Florida vs. Romelee. He knows how to get his hands dirty.

LOL

There are rhetorical questions, and then there are rhetorical questions.

Let’s just say Keith Olberdouche’s and Tweety’s panties would be in a wadded up bunch.

benrand on February 20, 2008 at 10:27 PM

At least the NYT is predictable.

jukin on February 20, 2008 at 10:28 PM

It’s not every day that a paper that endorsed you tries to ruin your very name. lol

THE CHOSEN ONE on February 20, 2008 at 10:33 PM

But why NOW? Why not hold it until after the convention? What does Huckabee know? What does TNR know? When will Karl Rove be blamed?

Did the Clintons do this to knock Obama off the front pages?

Did the Obamas do this to get Michelle’s big mouth out of the spotlight?

Confusion reigns.

SouthernGent on February 20, 2008 at 10:36 PM

But why NOW?

Damn good question. Blame TNR, I guess.

Allahpundit on February 20, 2008 at 10:37 PM

My take is the NYT really did not like McCain getting arrogant with Obama today regarding public financed campaigns.

So, time to take him down. “My friends”, he will be the proverbial frog jumping from one skillet to another until the convention…….if he makes it that far.

Huckabee I don’t like, but he may be the smartest guy in the room not circling the wagons until the fight is over.

Allahpundit on February 20, 2008 at 10:37 PM

Maybe they’re saving the really good stuff for later…

WisCon on February 20, 2008 at 10:45 PM

TNR blog says “it seems very, very damaging.”. (Emphasis mine). And why would a staff member meet the lobbyist at Union Station? That place is a noise pit. Meet at a private location. It all sounds very…contrived.

SouthernGent on February 20, 2008 at 10:46 PM

The boss dreams of angles yet unexplored.

Weak.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 20, 2008 at 10:51 PM

More from TNR:

The story reads to me like it had originally been much more ambitious, but had its guts ripped out somewhere along the way. The obvious question is whether those guts will ever trickle out now that this story has surfaced.

How would someone be able to tell that a story had its “guts ripped out”?

If this story is true, and I’m highly dubious, we have time to regroup.

SouthernGent on February 20, 2008 at 10:53 PM

AP, why not bring up the fact that John McCain was known as a “ladies man” and cheated on his crippled wife who fought to get him out of Vietnam? There can’t be any truth to a rumor about a man who has admitted to being adulterous, right? I mean it was ok because he said he was just trying to be 25 again and that means it is ok for him to cheat on his cripple wife.

Have fun selling the “ladies man”.

Poptech on February 20, 2008 at 11:00 PM

Teaser from TNR

TNR correspondent Gabe Sherman is working on a piece about the Times’ foot-dragging on the McCain story, and the back-and-forth within the paper about whether to publish it.

Deety on February 20, 2008 at 11:04 PM

Let the games begin!

roux on February 20, 2008 at 10:18 PM

Interesting that it would be a resume enhancer if he had a D after his name, but a scandal because he has an R.

As for the smear…right out of the lib media playbook. Drip it out, and it will last at least a week as others dig into it and likely repeat the same thing with slightly different wording.

Once it’s done, roll out a new story. Drip it for awhile, then go with a new one, or repeat the first.

Playing devils advocate. Why would McCain and Iseman both retain lawyers over this?

THE CHOSEN ONE on February 20, 2008 at 10:33 PM

Yet it was obvious to everyone but McCain and his supporters.

Poptech on February 20, 2008 at 11:00 PM

McCain is a slime……….his treatment of his first wife says it all.

I judge the man on his past actions, which have been dispicable.

Can’t wait to hear Medved spin this tomorrow.

omnipotent on February 20, 2008 at 11:44 PM

Thanks for your service Fred!

omnipotent on January 19, 2008 at 7:14 PM

He dumps his first wife of 26 years for a newer model and you see him as the paragon of good but McCain… well… hmmm

Bradky on February 20, 2008 at 11:54 PM

Endorse” means “knife-in-the-back” in NewDurantyspeak.

As predictable as Obama’s youthful cocaine dealer being brought out by the other side in the days to come.

Panem et circenses.

Pass the popcorn.

Bradky on February 20, 2008 at 11:54 PM

Fred! and his wife amicably divorced a DECADE (1985) before he met Jeri (1996).

McCain’s first wife Carol and he himself admit that his cheating ended their marraige.

John left his crippled wife for a daughter of a rich liquor baron…………….you stay classy, my friend.

But thanks for rescueing that comment from the memory hole, you really care!!

The drugs on whatever planet you live on must be really good indeed.

JayHaw Phrenzie on February 21, 2008 at 12:09 AM

Is this the same TNR that recently published articles with lies told to defame our brave soldiers an marines?

Is this story sourced with the same, high quality standard as that one?

JayHaw Phrenzie on February 21, 2008 at 12:11 AM

omnipotent on February 21, 2008 at 12:05 AM

He broke his marriage vows and didn’t stay together forever. Not the action of the “true conservative”.
You are taking the flip flop home video course by J Kerry, no?

McCain and his wife split amicably as well.

Bradky on February 21, 2008 at 12:12 AM

omnipotent on February 21, 2008 at 12:05 AM

Your hypocrisy is blatant and ugly.

And yes, your spin reeks.

JayHaw Phrenzie on February 21, 2008 at 12:13 AM

Why don’t they just ask Cindy? She’ll say “John said there was nothing going on. I believe him. Any more questions? No? OK, then STFU”.

LtE126 on February 21, 2008 at 12:18 AM

Bradky on February 21, 2008 at 12:12 AM

Both Fred! and John failed in their first marriages.

My point is that McCain left his wife for Cindy and that Fred! had been divorced for a decade before he met Jeri. (and yes I know the McCains were ’separated’ when he met Cindy).

JayHaw Phrenzie on February 21, 2008 at 12:13 AM

It’s a little late to for me spin for Fred! sweetheart.

Mac was separated…ok. One of my favorite things I read around here…”Clinton lied, a dress was stained”.

LtE126 on February 21, 2008 at 12:27 AM

I thought Mr. Bennett did well on H&C.

This NYT story is scarce on facts, but loaded with speculation and innuendo, business as usual for them.

Who knows what will come out later, but I’m thinking they pulled the trigger too early, giving McCain time to neutralize this.

You need to improve your typing if you want to go by the handle of “omnipotent”. :)

JayHaw Phrenzie on February 21, 2008 at 2:00 AM

The story is a load of crap of course, but isn’t this the type of thing that the Donks told us had nothing to do with anything with the Billary ? Shady money and bimbos, what’s the problem ?

JonRoss on February 21, 2008 at 6:32 AM

I’m sorry, but I take a good long hard look at McPain, and somehow, for some reason I cannot fathom at this present time, just the idea of a toady-looking guy like McPain having an affair with anyone is something I can’t even begin to imagine. I mean, as much of a sleazebag as he is, Bubba Billy does seem to have the looks that would attract any floozy. But McPain? The guy looks like a squelched leprechaun having a very bad hair day. Babe-magnet, this guy ain’t!
