A sex scandal that may not be a scandal tucked inside an ethics scandal that may not be an ethics scandal tucked inside an ethics scandal that was a genuine scandal 20 years ago, and for which McCain has begged forgiveness ever since. The Paper of Record.

The media halo’s gone, Maverick. Nothing personal. Just business.

Mr. Black said Mr. McCain and Ms. Iseman were friends and nothing more. But in 1999 she began showing up so frequently in his offices and at campaign events that staff members took notice. One recalled asking, “Why is she always around?”…

In interviews, the two former associates said they joined in a series of confrontations with Mr. McCain, warning him that he was risking his campaign and career. Both said Mr. McCain acknowledged behaving inappropriately and pledged to keep his distance from Ms. Iseman. The two associates, who said they had become disillusioned with the senator, spoke independently of each other and provided details that were corroborated by others…

[McCain advisor John] Weaver added that the brief conversation [he had with Iseman] was only about “her conduct and what she allegedly had told people, which made its way back to us.” He declined to elaborate…

Mr. McCain said that the relationship was not romantic and that he never showed favoritism to Ms. Iseman or her clients. “I have never betrayed the public trust by doing anything like that,” he said. He made the statements in a call to Bill Keller, the executive editor of The New York Times, to complain about the paper’s inquiries…

In late 1999, Ms. Iseman asked Mr. McCain’s staff to send a letter to the commission to help Paxson, now Ion Media Networks, on another matter. Mr. Paxson was impatient for F.C.C. approval of a television deal, and Ms. Iseman acknowledged in an e-mail message to The Times that she had sent to Mr. McCain’s staff information for drafting a letter urging a swift decision.

Mr. McCain complied. He sent two letters to the commission, drawing a rare rebuke for interference from its chairman.

The juicy stuff’s at the end, including instances of McCain acting against the interest of Iseman’s clients. Exit question: Is this really the tack the left’s going to take against the guy who co-sponsored McCain-Feingold, and about whose “sense of honor” Russ Feingold testifies to in this very piece? That he’s unethical?

Update: Remember this? This story’s evidently been in the works for two months, and if you believe Drudge’s teaser from back then, it was initially going to accuse McCain of having let Iseman write parts of his telecom bills. How thin must that angle have been if it didn’t make the cut for an article this thin on other details?

Update: Among the various ways to get the base to rally behind Maverick, a New York Times hit piece surely must be one of the most efficient.

Update: Not only is Hannity & Colmes running with this, they’re showing photos of Iseman. Carl Cameron’s on and is saying he talked to McCain’s advisors when Drudge first scooped this in December, and that apparently TNR was threatening to run a story about the Times burying the article unless they published. I’ll cut the video; stand by.

Update: Team McCain answers:

“It is a shame that the New York Times has lowered its standards to engage in a hit and run smear campaign. John McCain has a 24-year record of serving our country with honor and integrity. He has never violated the public trust, never done favors for special interests or lobbyists, and he will not allow a smear campaign to distract from the issues at stake in this election.

“Americans are sick and tired of this kind of gutter politics, and there is nothing in this story to suggest that John McCain has ever violated the principles that have guided his career.”

Update: As promised, here’s the video of Cameron claiming via McCain’s campaign that TNR pressured the Times into running with it.

Link: sevenload.com

Update: Here’s video of Bob Bennett ripping the Times to shreds.

Update: TNR says it’ll have something to say tomorrow.

Update: WaPo’s more careful about not suggesting any sexual shenanigans but they don’t have any more on the ethical angle than the Times has:

Three telecom lobbyists and a former McCain aide, all of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that Iseman spoke up regularly at meetings of telecom lobbyists in Washington, extolling her connections to McCain and his office. She would regularly volunteer at those meetings to be the point person for the telecom industry in dealing with McCain’s office.

Concern about Iseman’s presence around McCain at one point led to her being banned from his Senate office, according to sources close to McCain.

How are they playing this McCain affair story? This creates a lot of questions. How is it going to play out? Does make a convention substitution possible? Still have plenty of time, many things can happen. Of course they wait until after Super Tuesday to stick it to the Romneyites. The MSM really hates Mormons, I learned that much from his campaign. Unfortunately too many people wrongly hate Mormons and that makes a Romney ticket at any time in the near future a sure loser. Then you Huck who would be better than McCain nationally but too many people dislike him. Then you have damaged goods McCorpse. You will vote for amnesty and like it? Whose got money to run right by him and win? Hold the convention in a Holiday Inn with no cameras and run someone against him if we have to.

He’s our Bill Clinton! We can’t loose or win!

Kini on February 20, 2008 at 8:35 PM

Oh Golly Gee Whiz! The NYT going after McPain with scandalous allegations so early? Heck, you’d think they would have waited first until after B.O. drove the last nail into Shillary’s campaign coffin before they started to dig up the dirt. Maybe it was a slow news day at the Gray Lady and they needed something to stir things up.

The NYT, gotta love ‘em! Thank god, the ‘Clenis’ admitted his flaws and ‘the pain’ he caused his family, or they would have surely done the same to him.

AUINSC on February 20, 2008 at 8:38 PM

So, he may have had an affair. But he may not have. And he may have acted unethically. But he may not have.

Some strong evidence you’ve got there, NYT.

amerpundit on February 20, 2008 at 8:41 PM

Since it is so early, you have to figure, what else do they have? There is plenty of time. That’s why they went so early on Rudy, because they have a wing in the NYT full of his dirt. If your trying to play Mr. Family values and Mr. Patriotic Public Servant you got to be clean. Too bad it wasn’t a Rev. Haggard like story, we’d get a mulligan on candidate selection.

McCain did cheat on his wife! Good choice with McCain AP! Glad you picked a winner!

Betrayal, deceit, corruption and John McCain (The U.S. Veteran Dispatch)

While still married to Carol, McCain began an adulterous relationship with Cindy. He married Cindy in May 1980 - just a month after dumping his crippled wife and securing a divorce.

Poptech on February 20, 2008 at 8:49 PM

His base is turning on him. His base is the MSM, they do the activist work, they get him all the free press, and they can end him. He won’t be used to getting grilled, there will be a couple of gaffes before it is all said and done.

Yes. These are the people that gave us Jason Blair. It’s their lady, Pelosi, in D.C. that says the surge has failed, days after the political benchmarks were achieved. Whatever public persona McCain and his supporters believed to be secure is about to go by the way side. There is an upside about this however. The only parts the Press can tear down is that which they have created. After they do what they can, what will be left will be the things that are really part of who McCain is. This could be good because it may make people focus on some of his better qualities, rather than the vanity of being a “Maverick,” which has always been a superficial and juvenile thing to claim as an achievement.

Weight of Glory on February 20, 2008 at 8:53 PM

True? I have no idea, but it is plausable.

McVain dumped his first wife.

The one who stood by him through his six long years as a POW and fought to bring him home.

She was in a car accident while he was gone, so she wasn’t up to snuff when he got back home and he dumped her for an Arizona mafia babe.

I’m not sure what is worse - the horseshit that the NYT produces daily, or the fact that so-called GOP supporters, some of them posting on this thread, are capable of stooping just as low.

Pax americana on February 20, 2008 at 8:58 PM

What is said in this article is not important. After all who among us takes those rejects seriously. But what is important here, is how quickly the bloom fell off the rose. This will be the first of many, and not just with the NYT. Now, this would have been the case with whomever we nominated, which is why base support is so important. But McCain doesn’t have that yet. It is going to be hard to find a lot of people on the right to defend McCain, and even harder to find those willing to receive that defence.

McCain also shuffled up his staff quite a bit. That is rich with potential information. It is just too damn early. This is the biggest election in years considering voter turnout, they aren’t going to flub it off the bat. They are in financial trouble and need start digging, it isn’t that hard to find dirt in DC, and I really don’t think they will blow it considering the stakes.

And now McCain issued his response that doesn’t confirm nor deny. He called it a smear. You guys do know this territory, right? Still very early.

Let there be no doubt: now that he’s the presumptive nominee, the love is gone on the part of the MSM. And the sooner John McCain realizes this, the better. I’m trusting that the conversation with Bill Keller was…illuminating.

McCain did cheat on his wife!

And so all the shameless McCain-haters crawl out of the woodwork again. Anyone who looks into the details of McCain’s divorce and second marriage (which took place 7 years after he returned from Vietnam, and after separation) will learn that it’s not much different from most divorces - except to the extent that it was rather amicable and generous compared to many, and except to the extent that the period of estrangement was rather unusually complicated and extended as a result of certain well-known events. His first wife, Carol, was not pushed to the side of the road in a wheelchair and left behind, or consigned to some out of the way hospice for a sad and lonely death - after having her immediate needs taken care of as part of the divorce settlement, she went on to have a successful career, working for Nancy Reagan among others. Maybe you’re confused by the rather unhappier tales associated with other conservative heroes. I don’t know. Maybe you get too excited by joining a virtual lynch mob whenever it assembles to think clearly.

I really don’t think so. Catalysts usually happen when something has been brewing under the surface for a while, just waiting for an event. With McCain only getting 55% in Wisconsin, and 44% in Washington state, I really don’t see a bubbling of support just waiting to be triggered into a full blown grass-roots support wave. I could be wrong, however; wouldn’t be the first time!

That’s why you’re a sucker if you play their game.

The Scorpion and the Frog is fable about a scorpion asking a frog to carry him across a river. The frog is afraid of being stung, but the scorpion reassures him that if it stung the frog, the frog would sink and the scorpion would drown as well. The frog then agrees; nevertheless, in mid-river, the scorpion stings him, dooming the two of them. When asked why, the scorpion explains, “I’m a scorpion; it’s my nature.”

It’s the NYT and MSMs nature. You are going to get stung no matter what you do for them.

Bad example. Patreus is a non political figure, who is a part of an incredibly respected group, the Military, and who had a lot of support with a majority of this country prior to that ad. McCain does not share in any of that, so to say that the reaction would be similar is not quite accurate.

Weight of Glory on February 20, 2008 at 9:27 PM

McCain vs the NYT…

Why should conservatives care if two of our enemies are fighting?

Lets hope one knocks the other out for good!

DwnSouthJukin on February 20, 2008 at 9:28 PM

This reminds me of the ‘Call Me’ campaign ad by Allen. A buncha noise on both sides of the aisle.

Whoever your ‘man’ is you better have a thick skin. The knives are out and their is no dodging them. HA doesn’t discriminate. If the story is out there we get to hash it out around here. It’s gonna be a long 258 days.

Limerick on February 20, 2008 at 9:28 PM

The NYT doesn’t have the pull to effect a negative change, but does have the pull to effect a rallying around McCain that hasn’t been able to happen despite all the endorsements he as gathered, including one from Bush SR.? How can the NYT be so weak and yet so strong at the same time?

Weight of Glory on February 20, 2008 at 9:24 PM

It’s sort of like we can squabble amonsgst ourselves, but when an outside force messes with one of us it messes with all of us. That’s how I see it.

SouthernGent on February 20, 2008 at 9:29 PM

America’s most famous newspaper is spreading unfounded rumors that John McCain cheated on his wife. Unbelievable. Does the New York Times have no shame?

SoulGlo on February 20, 2008 at 9:29 PM

Schadenfreudelicious…BWAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!

I’m gonna looooove watching the fall in line wing of the GOP come crawling back to conservatives as the vaunted independents start peeling away under the withering barrage of bad press. AAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!

doubleplusundead on February 20, 2008 at 8:57 PM

heh…I’m glad you’re enjoying all of this :-P

OK, the “fall in line wing”? See, you have it all wrong. Speaking only for myself, I’ve been endorsing McCain all this time because I simply won’t fall in line. I won’t do, as some (a smaller amount day by day) conservatives “fall in line” and won’t back McCain. Supporting McCain is not abandoning conservative principles. But you won’t believe that. Fortunately, most notable conservatives out there have endorsed McCain. And for good reason. The alternative is unacceptable.

Big surprise, the liberal media wants to take down the GOP nominee. Didn’t see that coming. I don’t like to argue with other conservatives politically, but it’s conservatives who now don’t like McCain, they will be the one’s “crawling back”…and falling in line.

What else are you going to do? Vote for Obama? Not vote at all? Neither is an acceptable choice.

JetBoy on February 20, 2008 at 9:31 PM

TOPV

You must be the token liberal here.
Republicans turn against our scoundrels, but Democrats make their scoundrels heroes. Bubba, Ted, Barney, X-KKK, etc, etc.

jgapinoy on February 20, 2008 at 9:32 PM

yawn.
did anyone expect whoever was the GOP frontrunner/nominee and not be drug through the mud whether real dirt or not?

trailortrash on February 20, 2008 at 9:33 PM

Sorry meant Corker not Allen in my previous. Old age sucks.

Limerick on February 20, 2008 at 9:33 PM

LOL. Which is it NYT? He’s old and got one leg in the grave, or he’s a youthful playboy who knows how to really knock the bottom out of it? LOL

THE CHOSEN ONE on February 20, 2008 at 9:35 PM

Hey, wait a second…didn’t the NYT endorse Maverick along with Hillary?

swami on February 20, 2008 at 9:37 PM

ha, even alan colmes doesnt believe this story lol

trailortrash on February 20, 2008 at 9:37 PM

I’m sure they have four reporters tracking down all those Huma Abedin rumors.

JammieWearingFool on February 20, 2008 at 9:38 PM

Republicans Conservatives turn against our scoundrels

Fixed that for ya. Conservatives stand for something, Republicans will support who they’re told.

DwnSouthJukin on February 20, 2008 at 9:38 PM

That’s how I see it.

SouthernGent on February 20, 2008 at 9:29 PM

Fair enough.

Weight of Glory on February 20, 2008 at 9:39 PM

Hey Bryan, any chance Hotair will play the revenge card and come up something rediculous about Obama? I can see it now, “Obama Caught Having Gay Sex in Pickup Truck”.

THE CHOSEN ONE on February 20, 2008 at 9:39 PM

This is really pissing me off…I was ambivalent about McCain before, but I now FULLY support him. This is just trash, complete trash.

Chudi on February 20, 2008 at 9:40 PM

So the Times has had this story since December and decided not to run it until McCain had wrapped up the nomination. Oh, and in the meantime they’ve endorsed him. Nice.
