Lauer to Obama: You’re expecting racial appeals from the GOP, right?

posted at 10:19 am on February 19, 2008 by Allahpundit

Via the Busters. Obama’s too shrewd to get down in the mud, no matter how hard Lauer tries to drag him in, but listen closely to his answer. I do love the insertion of “actually” as a qualifier, as it betrays the sense that believing Republicans would disapprove of racial attacks on a minority candidate is somehow surprising or mildly taboo.

Which, to Matt Lauer, I’m sure it is.

Needless to say, there’s more going on here than meets the eye. Obama doesn’t need to accuse the GOP of playing racial politics because Matt Lauer’s going to do it for him. Billy Jeff got a taste of that when his innocuous “fairy tale” comment was demagogued from here to eternity by Obama’s supporters, but wait until the general. You ain’t see nothing yet. Peggy Noonan:

The Democrats have it exactly wrong. Hillary is the easier candidate, Mr. Obama the tougher. Hillary brings negative; it’s fair to hit her back with negative. Mr. Obama brings hope, and speaks of a better way. He’s not Bambi, he’s bulletproof.

The biggest problem for the Republicans will be that no matter what they say that is not issue oriented–”He’s too young, he’s never run anything, he’s not fully baked”–the mainstream media will tag them as dealing in racial overtones, or undertones. You can bet on this. Go to the bank on it.

Indeed, but that’s only half of it. Skim this piece from the Journal on the racial and gender nuance of the Democrats’ white male heartland base. Guess who’ll be blamed if this comes to pass: “There are going to be a lot of people crossing over to the Republicans because he’s black.”

Exit question: How do you suppose Mrs. Obama would have handled Lauer’s question?

I just love all these tacit admissions that the democrat party is full of closet racists.

i’m tired of these “swiftboating” questions in the media, they have a liberal lie in them: that all the charges by the swift boat vets were false, which is incorrect and Kerry still hasn’t publicly released his records.

nice branding on their part though, easy to do when you have stooges like Lauer in the media for you.

jp on February 19, 2008 at 10:34 AM

Yeah, “demagoguery” was too long and made the headline look weird on the front page. The point remains.

ha, well…they claim he’s going to take a polygraph and is suing obama or something. You’d think, if that had even a hint of truth to it that he’d have pics of he and obama together, receipts or something from the hotel……and he doesn’t seem like the crack cocaine type to me either, he’s sophisticated enough for the pure stuff ;)

a story like that, even if true, without a videotape or something would backfire and probably help obama. people that like him would never buy it.

Can we just go ahead and declare main stream journalists a race? Then the racist shoe will fit me.

I’m not sure how much impact the demagoguery will have on racial groups. Obama will get 99% of the black vote anyway. The class warfare shtick will have more impact on undecideds. Contrary to popular opinion, I think Michelle Obama’s rants may be effective, if they aren’t attacked.

a capella on February 19, 2008 at 10:50 AM

I hope we get to hear a lot more from Michelle Obama. The more the American people learn about her, the better chance there is of keeping her and her big-spending, big-government, liberal husband out of the White House.

I’d like to know how the long time black commenters here feel generally feel about the racial attitudes of republicans and conservatives. I don’t see that it’s commented on much at all, except in regard to something a democrat says or does. IMHO, it’s the content of the character that counts. MLK’s dream was answered– in the Republican party.

JiangxiDad on February 19, 2008 at 10:54 AM

The tactic for the GOP is to push the issues, starting with experience (the one benefit of having a candidate older than dirt) and keep away from the identity politics altogether.

That, of course, is the rub since the screaming lefties of the GOP forced a liberal Democrat on us as the candidate so there is no substantive difference! You lefties managed to kick God out of the GOP now live with the results of your short-sighted hatred of social conservatives. No Republican is going to beat a Democrat when espousing the same views. You idiots killed the GOP. Hope you are proud of yourselves.

highhopes on February 19, 2008 at 10:59 AM

Just like the media glosses over the fact that the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was first proposed by Republican Pres. Dwight Eisenhower in the 1950s and that the Republican party was responsible for passing the ’64 Civil Rights Act in the face of Dixiecrat filibustering and obstruction.

The ‘sin’ of the 1968 “Southern Strategy” where Nixon appealed to white southerners is trumpeted, but more than a century of Democratic racism is ignored.

I’m waiting for Matt to ask where people should sign up for the looting and rioting if Hussein isn’t nominated.

Alden Pyle on February 19, 2008 at 11:12 AM

Matt Lauer is the same guy who let Tom Cruise demolish him in a debate over whether anyone should take prescription medication for depression. Dr. Cruise reduced Lauer to rubble. At the end, all Lauer could do is say: “Tom, you’ve done your homework” and then he begged Cruise for acceptance. Lauer wanted desperate for Cruise to approve of him. His lavishing of praise for Cruise came after Cruise said Brooke Shields should have ignored her physician’s advice and taken vitamins instead and according to Cruise, if Brooke did some exercise all her problems would vanish. Lauer pleaded with Cruise to be good to him.

Larraby on February 19, 2008 at 11:13 AM

I think comrade Katie took Lauer’s testosterone to CBS with her.

Wade on February 19, 2008 at 11:13 AM

How Mrs. O would have handled it?

Lauer: Do you think they will use race to attack you?

Michelle: Of course they will! This is America! And this is the only time in my adult life I have been proud of America, when all these honkies…er, people voted for my radical socialist husband for president.

PattyJ on February 19, 2008 at 11:28 AM

Lauer is an odious prick. He couldn’t even wait til Obama was finished talking to ask “how ’bout race?!?”

Are these guys serious? I mean, really? They honestly think we’re going to be seeing “Obama is black and likes chicken” ads from RNC?

JiangxiDad on February 19, 2008 at 10:54 AM

I have a blog for that sort of thing, but I’ll say this: I wouldn’t be a conservative Republican if I thought that it was the party of racists. Actually I don’t think that there is any such thing as the “party of racists”–just two ways of thinking about the relationship between the government and the governed. The racial attitudes of individuals do, however, often have an effect on which party they belong to–sometimes (most of the time?) individuals don’t even consciously recognize how.

It’s a subtle distinction, but there you have it.

If Barack Obama was Michael Steele, I’d support him.

But, he’s not…So, I won’t.

franksalterego on February 19, 2008 at 12:42 PM

“There are going to be a lot of people crossing over to the Republicans because he’s black.”

Just thinking out loud, but an equally unprovable and stupid statement would be to say “There are going to be a lot of people crossing over to the Republicans because he’s white.”

I still want to know how one actually gets to determine their ethnicity. Seems like a lot of people do it on the sole basis of skin color. Dr MLK is probably rolling in his grave over that one…

rbb on February 19, 2008 at 12:47 PM

The donkey party has always been and remains home for racists of all stripes: the old-style “cracker” racists, the new-style condescending racists and the quota/preference/affirmative-action reverse racists.

Or as Ann Coulter once put it (paraphrasing), the best way to find out what a liberal believes or is doing is to listen to what they accuse conservatives of believing or doing.

Lauer to Obama: You’re expecting racial appeals from the GOP, right?

Why would that Muslim Barack Hussein care about those bastards, pigs, ‘Kafirs’ Christians Republicans or Democrats when he got the support of all the Muslims here in America and all over the world, including the US ambassador to the UN, Zalmay Khalilzad??

US-Islamic forum in Doha endorses Barack Obama

By Agence France Presse (AFP)

Tuesday, February 19, 2008

DOHA:

Delegates at a US-Islamic forum voiced support on Monday for US presidential hopeful Barack Obama, although some warned against expecting any radical policy change irrespective of who captures the White House. Obama won overwhelming support in a mock election by more than 200 American and Muslim delegates at the US-Islamic World Forum in Doha.

His Democratic rival Hillary Clinton and Republican candidates won a handful of votes.

About 280 public figures and academics from 32 countries, including Afghan President Hamid Karzai and the US ambassador to the UN, Zalmay Khalilzad, attended the fifth edition of the forum due to end in Qatar later Monday….

Please watch the video of Lauer on youtube when Tom Cruise takes him apart. Lauer is the recipient of a Cruise temper tantrum and Lauer is completely intimidated and he literally begs Cruise for forgiveness. Matt Lauer is a suck up to any actor or actress with an agenda. He feels honored in their presence and wants their acceptance above everything else. I can imagine him coming home from work and bragging that Tommy talked to him and Tommy let him shine his shoes.
