Bill Clinton’s “classic conflict of interest”

Take a few minutes and read through this article. It’s complex, with Bill Clinton taking this benefactor’s jet over to that country to work on this other deal that ends up benefiting everyone including Clinton’s charities and presumably the Clinton library. The actions on display mirror the kind of dealmaking that the Clintons engaged in in the Whitewater scandal, only on an international scale and with the Clinton library and Clinton campaign at least tangentially involved. Here’s a takeaway quote.

Giustra, 50, has since put his plane at Clinton’s disposal at least a dozen times to raise money for charity, his wife’s presidential campaign or himself, according to U.S. flight records and spokesmen for Clinton and Giustra. The Canadian businessman has become one of the largest donors to the Clinton Foundation, pledging half his future minerals earnings in a way that ties the foundation’s success to his own.

“If former President Clinton is making decisions about where to put the charitable efforts of the Clinton Foundation based even partly on where he’s likely to benefit personally, or see his friends benefit, then that clearly is a classic conflict of interest,” says Aaron Dorfman, executive director of the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy in Washington.

The other takeaway is a question: Did any of Bill Clinton’s various international deals end up funding the $5 million loan that the Clintons handed to her cash-strapped campaign? I don’t know the answer to that question and I’m sure if asked they’ll say no, but after all these years with these two, is there any reason at all to take the Perjurer in Chief and his Number One Enabler at their word? I don’t think so.

I honestly didn’t read the article. IMO, if Clinton is involved in the deal, then it’s shady.

“Giustra, 50, has since put his plane at Clinton’s disposal at least a dozen times …”

To be repaid in the form of overnights in the Lincoln Bedroom.

Obama may win the delegates needed to win the nomination, but the Clintons will not let him have it. There is no way Obama can anticipate the evil that he is about to face. The blackmailing of commited delgates has already begun. The only charities that the Clintons will ever support is their own back pockets.

We still are not clear on how tangled they were with Tyson and other money-making schemes/frauds. Everything they touch is dirty, everything. They have untold wealth that we have no idea about, I am sure, and yet they still want to steal our real and hard-earned incomes. I loathe them beyond words.

There is truth in that. Reminds me of the comment from a professional gambler regarding the integrity of professional sports. Paraphrasing,..”There is too much money at stake to let the ballplayers determine the outcome.”

So this ‘many hats’ rule allows him to completely co-mingle the funds as long as each ‘donation’ is preceded by a declaration of purpose? The income gets the scrutiny but the outlay doesn’t? You could juggle the books nine ways from Sunday running a business like this.

I want in on this scam……

How is it legal, let alone ethical, for a former president, or the spouse of a sitting government official, to even touch foreign money?

Limerick on February 19, 2008 at 6:06 PM

It’s Algore dealmaking writ large… (preaching Gorebal Warming while promoting his carbon credit company).

petefrt on February 19, 2008 at 6:08 PM

Everything they touch is dirty, everything.
bbz123 on February 19, 2008 at 6:00 PM

Even if it was clean before they touched it. The dirt is spread by the dirty.

Whoa- Clinton is shady!

Chuck Schick on February 19, 2008 at 6:14 PM

Finding dirt on the Clintons is like shooting ducks in a barrel.

:) Hillary-style?

petefrt on February 19, 2008 at 6:24 PM

Money ain’t my thang….but I’m gonna ask anyway…

So BillyBoy heads a charity, say ‘the underpriviledged widget fund(UWF)’, and secures a $5M donation from a Saudi prince. BillyBoy then invoices the ‘UWF’ for consulting fees for $4M and drops the check into the BillyBoy family checking account. Hillary opens the checkbook and says gee thanks Bill? That is legal?

Worstest ex-prez evah? Clinton or Carter? Hmmmmmmmm

Sugar Land on February 19, 2008 at 6:26 PM

And they despised Nancy Reagan as first spouse because she wanted new china for White House state dinners.

Sloan Morganstern on February 19, 2008 at 6:29 PM

That is legal?

Limerick on February 19, 2008 at 6:24 PM

It’s unlikely. He’d invoice the whole $5M and file for bankruptcy.

You know, they just have so many opportunities for this country. They don’t want to see us fall backwards.

It’s very personal for them.

Dorvillian on February 19, 2008 at 7:03 PM

Hmmm. “Whoring out the prestige, power, and access that holding high office confers for personal self-aggrandizement since 1978″.

What’s not to like about a putative “political power dynasty” with that emblazoned on their family crest?

Zorro on February 19, 2008 at 7:14 PM

glad this is getting more attention.

it’s hugely corrupt.

we blogged it on 2/2/08.
http://astuteblogger.blogspot.com/2008/02/clinton-corruption-story-10874-and.html

and the nytimes covered it. with photos:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/31/us/politics/31donor.html?_r=2&hp&oref=slogin&oref=slogin

dick morris wrote abiut it, too:
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/02/bill_clinton_rogue_copresident.html

but it went no where.

if the dame thing had been done by ghwbush or a bushie then we’d have had congressional hearings.

It’s not like he was selling pardons to criminals that gave him money?

He’s been there and done that already with no problems!

I also have to wonder why Michelle Obama makes a reported $275K working as an outreach director for a hospital. Is this a standard salary (if so, tell me where to sign up) or is this a way to funnel money to the Messiah?

PattyJ on February 19, 2008 at 7:34 PM

Hillary using Bill’s money to fund her campaign? Hillary is a feminist, she doesn’t need a man to finance her campaign! ;-0

Could we please please please ban that front-page pic of Clinton from this site? The smiling friendly predator closeup always gives me the profound creeps. I can’t explain it. (Actually I can, but the explanation might get me banned.) Gonna have nightmares tonight. Please have mercy.

I love the Kazhakstan mining deal (Is it for superior potassium?).

And it was the Bushies who invaded Afghanistan for the oil pipeline?

JohnW on February 19, 2008 at 9:12 PM

As usual, the Clinton’s using others carbon footprint to disguise their fingerprints.

Reading the article, proves the world view ‘Wild Bill’ as an upscale ‘Used Car Salesman’ they can use to hide their real intentions because ‘Wild Bill’ has no qualms about pimping himself to exploit his own ego.

My only word of advise to the world corporations that wish to do the same thing-use decals when marking your biz jet. They can be removed later and protect their involvement.
