Michelle Obama hasn’t been proud of America in at least 26 years?

posted at 5:28 pm on February 18, 2008 by Bryan
Share on Facebook | regular view

That’s what she said today, if this quote is accurate.

“For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country,” she told a Milwaukee crowd today, “because it feels like hope is making a comeback.”

Only her husband’s run for president has made her proud of America? That’s…extremely narcissistic and self-centered.

Nothing America has done in Michelle Obama’s adult life, which at 44 goes back 26 years to 1982, has made her proud of her country? Nothing? Not winning the Cold War? Not our regular and orderly transitions of power based on the rule of law? Not the fact that we feed and defend the world, not that we lead in science and technology research, not that we elected the first black president in 1992…nothing? Not the fact that she and her husband were able to go to Ivy League schools before embarking on extremely lucrative careers? Not the fact that we help out in disasters wherever they strike in the world? Nothing has made Michelle Obama proud of her country in her entire adult life?

How sad. I certainly don’t want such a vain pessimist as First Lady.

Update: Here’s the video.

First you have no proof that she was told to “blame America first” at Harvard — that is your pet theory hence wild speculation.

Second, your past comments about Obama show that you clearly despise him and are evidence of a bit of ODS on your part.

Thirdly, I suspect that you are looking for a reason to be offended – you seem to be covetous of that victim pie you complain about so often the last two years.

Lastly, the most inflammatory sentence was taken from her speech. It elicited the expected outraged comments.

Bradky on February 18, 2008 at 9:38 PM

1. True, but the defense rests.
2. True, I despise him. But he’s my Senator; I am fully entitled to do so. He’s an off-the-charts 60s leftist who is running as a deity. Again, entitlement is mine; no ODS.
3. False. I find her comments outrageous, but I take no personal offense because I see this same nonsense from lots of liberals. To be fair, I know a lot of liberals who love this country and would share my sense of outrage for her careless, pandering, self-promoting political rhetoric. But more to the point, I don’t recall having a “victim pie” fetish, or even commenting on victimhood with any great frequency. Either my memory is bad (it is) or you have mistaken me for another.
4. Explain. (If you refer to my point that the full context was in the video, refer back to your original post. You seemed to be implying that others missed the full quote, but it was in the video. That was my only point.)

I still want to hear you, or anyone, explain whom it is that she is so proud to see united. My point here is that she is talking crap. The Dems are divided into a brawl of racial and gender identity politics that has been ugly from the beginning, and promises to get worse, as there are Clintons involved. Surely she cannot be speaking of the GOP, as if.

The crap about hope isn’t even worthy of additional ridicule. She is clownish.

America is the most admired, most affluent, most free nation in human history. That… is what Barack Hussein Obama wants to change.

DANEgerus on February 18, 2008 at 10:48 PM

I think we need a photoshop of the Oval Office with Barack and a Che flag from his campaign office hanging on the wall and Michelle saying, I am finally proud of North America.

Bradky, come now. Let us be united in hope, you and I.

Do you really not believe that the U.S. is the most admired nation on earth, and the greatest force for good in the world for the past century? Really?

Heh! I went to New Orleans this weekend and became involved in several political discussions while enjoying my time in the city.
Here’s what I got from the locals.
#1 – Ron Paul is actually still running a campaign
#2 – Obama is better than Billary
#3 – Bush is Satan

So upon those encounters I would like to comment on some of your comments! (YAY!)

It is gems like this that convinces me that I am right in doubting the conventional wisdom that it would be easier to defeat Clinton.

highhopes on February 18, 2008 at 7:07 PM

There is so much dirt in the Clinton house, they couldn’t hire enough ppl to clean it up. They have a political machine, not a cleaning machine…not to mention, our electorate have vey short memories, unless they are reminded!

I miss Jerry Thompson.

shick on February 18, 2008 at 7:13 PM

Don’t we all!

I’m pretty damn proud of my country every damn day. Yes, we have issues, and there are things that need improvement, but my frame of reference is completely different.
Funny, I’m not feeling too proud that America seems to be falling for her husband’s drivel. Weird how that works.

All in all we will have 4 years of very bad government. Hopefully we will be able to vote after Obama’s reign, and be able to get some true conservative running this country again.

BTW, One guy I debated with actually tried to convince me that, even though Obama was ultra liberal, our congress would not allow him to make this country socialist…and he was a self confessed RINO.

Oh well, my hope is gone…someone help me!

lsutiger on February 18, 2008 at 11:13 PM

I’ve seen people who are hungry to be unified around some basic common issues, and it’s made me proud.”

As to #4 you obviously watched the videoclip. I don’t think all commenters did based on their “outrage”.
Curious that you equate my comments to mean agreement with Mrs. Obama.
the main point is that there should be better things to address Mr. Obama on than one sentence from a speech. If that is all you have then you are conceding that Sen Obama is right on the issues… focus Jaibones, that’s all.

Brad, left, center, or right, her comment should offend any American. I really don’t get your take on this topic.

Entelechy on February 18, 2008 at 10:59 PM

We will have to agree to disagree – I think it was taken badly out of context albeit pretty stupidly articulated on her part. The last sixteen years have been some of the more polarized in our history and I think she was alluding to that than anything else.
If the strategy is to attack the spouse for every little utterance it will seem that Obama is right on the issues and the opponents have little rational disagreement or counter positions.

Bradky on February 18, 2008 at 11:40 PM

Dear Brad, she’s 44 – subtract 26 and you will see that it’s her entire adult life. Heck, I had to grow up really young, much, much, much younger than her, and am accountable for all of what I said/did, good, and some not so good.

Entelechy on February 18, 2008 at 11:51 PM

Obama is right on the issues and the opponents have little rational disagreement or counter positions.

Bradky on February 18, 2008 at 11:40 PM

In fact, her stupid/offensive, and untrue, comment aside, I have a bigger issue with “on the issues” – what issues Brad? What is he for, or against? Please, no “hope” and “change”.

Entelechy,

#1 You quoted only half of my comment and made it seem as if I had made a completely opposite claim to what I said. Why?

If the strategy is to attack the spouse for every little utterance it will seem that Obama is right on the issues and the opponents have little rational disagreement or counter positions.

Bradky on February 19, 2008 at 12:02 AM

Brad, I goofed on you at 11:59, and forgot the :)

DaveS then made a point of nothing – bad!

To your more serious point Brad, she’s not being attacked on everything, but this is not small. Please see my comment on her age. In addition this is a privileged person, who’s had all the advantages of this country – why then such utter untrue/insane comments? I’ve had the privilege to live them, and they were not bad at all. Mind you, I started with absolutely zero/nothing. She or Hillary will straighten us out – I have no idea how I’ve been able to live so far without them…hope is on the way now.

I lost all respect for her after her race-card playing public comment on how her husband could be shot and killed while getting gas at the gas station SOLEY because he’s black… ESPECIALLY since she made that totally unwarranted remark, without merit, on the heels of a tragic time when not one but TWO BLACK MEN had shot and killed white people getting gas at the gas station (among other shopping venues during their reign or terror), SOLELY because the victims were white! :/

For lack of a better term, and I don’t mean this with a racist tone as it applies to any person with an air of undue and unearned self-entitlement and attitude like hers… she’s an uppity bitch.

A few of the things that have made me proud to be an American since 1982:

The Re-election of Ronald Reagan in 1984.
“Mr. Gorbochev, tear down this wall!”
The Fall of the Soviet Union.
The Liberation of Kuwait.
The Contract with America.
The Impeachment of Bill Clinton.
The Election of President George W. Bush.
The repudiation of Al Gore by the Supreme Court.
Flight 93.
The Liberation of Afghanistan.
The Liberation of Iraq.

This list is not complete, by any means. But if Michelle Obama cannot find at least one thing on this list to be proud of, I want no part of her or her husband.

the main point is that there should be better things to address Mr. Obama on than one sentence from a speech.

The point of every speach I have heard from him or her is that America is a racist, terrible place. He is very good at smoothing it over but if you listen closely that is his message. This bs tag that he has been given that he is a uniter is just the msm protecting their chosen candidate. She is lousy at glossing it over so it’s important that her speaches get put out there for everyone to hear. America needs to know that if they elect him they will get a first lady that will make hillary look like jackie kennedy. She is an angry, bitter fascist. Not because she has been treated poorly because of her race, because if this is how she has talked all her life then people with brains have rightfully not taken her seriously. Now is the time to take what she says seriously America.

peacenprosperity on February 19, 2008 at 7:43 AM

The nation does want change. Renew the formation of, not add fomation, of what the real role of government is.

Government change means a dramatic reduction in its reach and impact on the daily lives of the citizens and to understand what the responsibilities are at each level.

Currently, the States have given up many of their responsibilities to the Federal level who mandate without any funding, because it can not tax you legally for something that is the state or local government’s responsibility. The result are states and communities that renounced their responsibility and are paying for it through a breakdown in infrastructure and trust.

We simply must take back personal responsibility to take care of ourselves and neighbors (you know those who live next door and you trust to watch your house or kids when you go to the store).

More simply, Let’s get back to the basics of society not the bane of dependence on someone or some group to give us what we should be getting for ourselves.

I have thought of Michelle Obama as a major liability to her husband’s campaign, ever since the 60 Minutes interview a years ago.

She sees America as a huge racial battle zone, where she or Barak could be gunned down at any time (By whom – The Man? Disenfranchised urban yoots they have nothing in common with except skin color?).

She sees her husband as a small child, not a man: he needs her (Momma) to hold his hand as he makes his way in this evil cruel world.

She’ll make a helluva First Lady. /sarc

rockbend on February 19, 2008 at 8:32 AM

I love her, she has enormous entertainment value as well as endless political value.

She’s so used to using the race crutch and not getting called on it that she no longer even fathoms that people find that logic line absurd.

I pray that the super D’s vote Mrs Bill the nominee so I can enjoy the show when Michelle’s head explodes and all the race pimps scream about the dream deferred, and the DNC erupts into a huge WWF brawl!

With any luck all the ussual cities will riot and all the old hippies (Brokaw, Mathews, et al) will bang their tamborines and cry on national TV.

Michelle is Obama’s best asset. Be thankful that she made herself known for us all to evaluate this early. She and he both gleaned from our CURRENT American system the finest educations and prestigeous positions of responsibility and influence.

The Obama CHANGE factor will be to eliminate as the past The American Dream>, and align with the advice from Denmark’s unemployed welfare recipients in the world’s highest taxed nation. Quit believing in the American Dream: that hard work and diligence will pay off in the end. Give it up to Obama (god); give up the dream and the paycheck to the Socialist cause with implicit trust in “someone else” taking care of you rather than taking care of yourself.

Michelle got hers. She’ll be damned sure that no one else gets theirs. Top bitch.

That comment along with her recent comment about pride and the fact that their church defines itself as being adverse to “racist” America tells me that what Obama says he believes and what he actually thinks might not be the same.

Sean68 on February 19, 2008 at 9:16 AM

Glad to see her show her true colors this early on in the race. So long as Mr. and Mrs. Obama used the American system AS IS to achieve the American Dream, why leave it in place for others to pursue? Top Bitch must eliminate all competition and require from all company submission to the OBAMA CHANGE:

“So you won’t have to do it alone, we killed the American Dream for you.”

Give them your paycheck, and beg for mercy. That used to be considered criminal behavior. It’s Obama’s platform, and it has momentum.

Bradky on February 18, 2008 at 11:40 PM

Bradky, sure we can disagree on this, but I think you are disagreeing for sport, and leaning hard toward disingenuous. Maybe you just got a little confused about your own point; I do that sometimes. Let’s review:

You slide back and forth between the excuses
“she’s only the candidate’s wife; what do we care?”,
“you took her comments out of context”, and
“apparently you have no disagreement with Obama’s policies and have conceded the debate to him”.

To which I say a) then she shouldn’t be making campaign speeches (she clearly isn’t up to it),
b) no, I didn’t, and
c) what debate?

Obama has fewer tangible policy positions than anyone in America, much less the actual candidates for President. His platform is “change” and “hope”. The only things anyone could possibly know about his intentions come from his vote against Justice Roberts, his open opposition to the war in Iraq prior to the war, and recent rating as the single most liberal Senator.

The Roberts vote equates with the liberal rating; but he is clearly a partisan, not just a liberal, as any number of very liberal Senators could not see a legitimate argument for voting against Roberts’s confirmation.

He is an irresponsible elected official (review his voting record; “present” is not a responsible position), and a garden variety corrupt Chicago politician (a primary fundraiser of his is presently in Federal custody for illegal political activity and the likelihood that he might flee back to Syria).

As for Mrs. Obama’s comments, they expose either a startling ignorance of the U.S. and our place in the world and the things that we do, or a core belief that this country is essentially “bad”. Further, her observation about the campaign is absurd — Hillary absurd. “…unified around some basic, common issues…” means what, exactly?

Back to my original question, Bradky, who is she saying is united, and around what?

Jaibones on February 19, 2008 at 9:28 AM

Michelle Obama is the type of black woman that drives me nuts. She is all about the victim mentality. “We shall overcome!” and all of that jazz. What the heck do you need to overcome? This country offers a chance for everyone you hateful, bitter fool! In past 25 years or so you can’t think of a single time to be proud of America? Has ‘The Man’ so horribly oppressed you that you are unable to see the reality that is America, the greatest country in the world? Your husband is not fit to command our country, he is as hollow as a chocolate Easter bunny. While he is calling for ‘hope’ and ‘change’ you are mocking the very country that has provided your husband with the greatest leadership opportunity in the world. Yet, your words may certainly help prevent him from attaining his goals. I bet he ‘hopes’ that you ‘change’ your tune real soon.

Depending on your frame of reference, where you live etc, whether that is considered a large salary. In NYC it is not.

I would think in Chicago it’s ok.

AprilOrit on February 19, 2008 at 1:11 PM

Don’t trust him or her….what is wrong with people who like these two….he is probably the worst possible candidate for president at this time in our history.

I hope the smart people wake up and make sure he does not get in….by voting for others.

Of course she wasn’t proud of that. She’s apparently one of those who think we still owe them something/everything to make up for years of oppression by different generations.

stacman on February 19, 2008 at 1:15 PM

You just got a nice mention on it from the top Article currently on Foxnews.com.

The conservative blog Hot Air also seized on Mrs. Obama’s comments.

“Only her husband’s run for president has made her proud of America? That’s … extremely narcissistic and self-centered,” the blog posting said. “How sad. I certainly don’t want such a vain pessimist as First Lady.”

$200,000 is a good salary where ever you are (we are not talking CEO, an attorney). Notice the average attorney at 85 grand, and she was at 200 grand. In your NYC (same as Chicago), and a little higher in Los Angeles (91,000).

right2bright on February 19, 2008 at 1:24 PM

I guess anything to help keep attention off the “Crypt Keeper” McCain is good (geesh)…

Move on adults…nothing to see here….

Just watched the Joe Scarborough Mika Brezsinski dust-up on this subject and Mika kept harping that Michelle said “REALLY proud” not “proud” SHE DIDN’T SAY REALLY PEOPLE! Look at the Video!

max1 on February 19, 2008 at 12:18 PM

Uhm… yes, she does say “really proud.” The exact quote is, “For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m really proud of my country.”

The video posted here has slightly corrupted audio but you can hear part of the word and see her say it at 19 seconds.

You need to listen (and watch) more closely.

12thman on February 19, 2008 at 2:09 PM

Here’s a cleaner video where you can clearly hear her say really proud.

12thman on February 19, 2008 at 2:35 PM

Ease up, folks. They’re just words.

sleepy-beans on February 19, 2008 at 10:19 AM

Ha! Well done.

baldilocks on February 19, 2008 at 2:36 PM

I, for one, want her to keep on talkin’! The more she opens her mouth, the more she exposes them for what they really are.

Indeed, like “change” and “hope”.

I think we need a photoshop of the Oval Office with Barack and a Che flag from his campaign office hanging on the wall and Michelle saying, I am finally proud of North America. – PattyJ

Like this?

i don’t agree, watched it several times, it looked to me like she started to say something then continued…

and don’t tell me what i need to do…

max1 on February 19, 2008 at 5:17 PM

Oh come on, give her a break. She’s a really big Baseball fan and 26 years ago was the last time the Mikwaukee Brewers were in the World series. And yes they lost.

Zaire67 on February 19, 2008 at 5:34 PM

I haven’t been proud of America in the last 6 years.

What’s the difference in saying “I wasn’t really proud of my country until now”, “I wasn’t very proud of my country until now,” and “I was only a little proud of my country until now?” No matter how you put it it sounds bad.

bojack on February 19, 2008 at 5:41 PM

I just saw video on Fox News with Brit Hume showing that her original statement was only “proud”. At a later speech perhaps the same day, she said the same thing but with “really proud” instead.

However, I concur with bojack that it doesn’t make much difference. It’s the standard leftist America=bad sentiment that we all know exists underneath the rhetoric.

The average attorney in NYC working at a good firm at her age with her experience makes $250K plus bonuses. I know because my family has more than several. And if you are doing entertainment law getting into licensing or copyright on the music or film side, neg distribution deals or doing sports law – even higher.

AprilOrit on February 19, 2008 at 7:48 PM

To really live here in Manhattan you should be around $300K to live comfortably without worry. At that salary you can easily purchase a coop and be approved by a snooty board or purchase a condo which reflects about $75K – 100K higher in price because it is real property. If you own a ccop you will be paying monthy maintnence and mortgage, on a condo common charges and your mortgage. Maitenance can average anywhere from as low as a dollar a square foot if you are lucky or higher if the financials on the building suck. At that salary you can afford the car, remember your garage is another $700 – $1000.00 month parking, garage space doesn’t come with the unit you buy. You pay for it.

You want to be able to affpord your maid, be able dine out, enjoy the city and all the finer restaurants and everything NY has to offer.

And if you are in a rental unit you will pay as well. And some landlords are looking for 50 times your salary as a qualifier, some will take 40. So if you make $250K – $300K you can easier afford the $5000.00 – $6000.00 mth rental bill on a nice unit in a doorman building.

Like America is really proud of this whining, self-serving brat of a woman?

Gatordoug on February 19, 2008 at 9:16 PM

Back to my original question, Bradky …

Jaibones on February 19, 2008 at 9:28 AM

Bradky? Hello? Anyone?

Jaibones on February 19, 2008 at 9:21 PM

If you look at other things she’s said to give this most recent comment context, it’s not hard to infer that she has a generally adverse relationship to her nation’s history–including its recent history. In fact, on the left-wing blogs, the lefties are defending her on JUST that basis–to white, the US is a racist country and who can blame a black person for not being proud of it etc. and so on.

Sean68 on February 19, 2008 at 11:04 PM

Bradky? Hello? Anyone?

Jaibones on February 19, 2008 at 9:21 PM

LOL sorry Jaibones but I spend your tax dollars responsibly when at work and don’t surf the unofficial sites. I thought you might be rejoicing at Obama’s win as well ;)

Back to my original question, Bradky, who is she saying is united, and around what?

I think she is referring to all the Obama supporters, of which there are many, united around the idea of change. May be a little intoxicating for her and I would certainly agree with you that she should probably stay away from speeches.

sure we can disagree on this, but I think you are disagreeing for sport

Probably more truth to that than you realize. As I’ve mentioned on numerous occasions I focus on strategy and the races as they develop. The question for you is do you think it is good strategy to make too much of this? It kind of sucks up oxygen to point out the things that really matter like how Obama and McCain stand on the issues.

Unless you are one of the “Pry the voting lever from my cold dead fingers before I will vote for McCain” types I think the above should make a little sense.

Bradky on February 19, 2008 at 11:47 PM

No, I am now fully on the side of easing the McCain haters off the ledges, luring them with brown liquor as needed.

As for the strategy of calling out his wife for her kneejerk leftism, yes, I think it’s a great idea. She’s a kneejerk leftist, and America doesn’t like those. They hide their views whenever possible, and parse their words carefully to avoid actually saying what they think.

To my great surprise and joy, Michelle isn’t bright enough to carry this off. To my greater joy, Obama is strangely aloof with the press, and is destined to further an alienation that has already begun. And when the Fifth Column turns against his Messianic rhetoric and starts asking him yes or no questions, the proverbial air will leave the balloon with a loud hissing noise.

Can’t wait. She’ll be calling you a racist, by the way, but be comforted my friend — I know you’re not.
