Michelle Obama hasn’t been proud of America in at least 26 years?

That’s what she said today, if this quote is accurate.
“For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country,” she told a Milwaukee crowd today, “because it feels like hope is making a comeback.”
Only her husband’s run for president has made her proud of America? That’s…extremely narcissistic and self-centered.
Nothing America has done in Michelle Obama’s adult life, which at 44 goes back 26 years to 1982, has made her proud of her country? Nothing? Not winning the Cold War? Not our regular and orderly transitions of power based on the rule of law? Not the fact that we feed and defend the world, not that we lead in science and technology research, not that we elected the first black president in 1992…nothing? Not the fact that she and her husband were able to go to Ivy League schools before embarking on extremely lucrative careers? Not the fact that we help out in disasters wherever they strike in the world? Nothing has made Michelle Obama proud of her country in her entire adult life?
How sad. I certainly don’t want such a vain pessimist as First Lady.
Update: Here’s the video.

That video is not quite right. First off she clearly says “lifetime”, and there is distortion in the audio, but I hear “really” before “proud”.

She has been so ingrained by the hatred of America spewed by the likes of the NAACP over the past 40 years, is it any wonder her vision of the country is so myopic.
pocomoco on February 18, 2008 at 6:56 PM
She needs to speak out more and as often as possible. Just so the rest of the country can be made more aware of her and her attitude.
The more I hear from her the more I can’t stand the thought of having her in the White House. Barrack by himself is bad enough.
Guardian on February 18, 2008 at 6:57 PM
Yeah, keep an eye on her but only one.
The Obama and Clinton camps are not so far apart ideologically that they are not more than happy to borrow each other’s good ideas as they have amply displayed in recent days.

According to Patterico’s site the rest of the quote
is
““What we have learned over this year is that hope is making a comeback. It is making a comeback and let me tell you something, For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction and just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment. I have seen people who are hungry to be unified around some basic common issues. It has made me proud.”
changes the outrage meter a little doesn’t it? Unless you believe the last 20 years have been what you would categorize as a unified country.

No all I hear is a bunch of people acting silly over the remarks of the spouse of a candidate. Remember when everyone was touting Fred’s hot wife as one reason to vote for him? Same kind of sophistry.
Bradky on February 18, 2008 at 7:32 PM
If so he should probably ask for his money back. I heard that she found it too inconvenient to actually bother to go vote for him in the primary.
I love “the youth vote”!
Deety on February 18, 2008 at 7:36 PM
I find his wife’s comment a moment of honesty in what is otherwise a campaign based on misrepresentation. The guy who’s running the meticulously race-transcendent campaign belongs to a vociferously anti-American, Farrakhan-revering, racially chauvinistic church; there’s an inconsistency here that indicates deception. Why would the guy we see running for president choose to belong to such a church with such a pastor?

Why hasn’t the hillary campaign exposed this by now?

Synergy/kumbaya is when we all go under, together, my friend Brad. Please internalize this, before it’s too late for all of us. No progress has ever come from all “being together”. That doesn’t mean that we should hate each other, but “change” and “hope” is not going to solve a thing, as simple words. What does Obama stand for, outside of the two words?

Hi Entelechy,
“No progress has ever come from all “being together””
Is this not what the conservatives are insisting on - that we all share only conservative values and ideals?
I know it is not your view but the idea that we must all be together in pronouncing the democrats as enemies is no less damaging than a liberal kumbaya.
regards,

For not liking America in the last several years, she sure has made a good living off of it. Hypocrites.
mimi1220 on February 18, 2008 at 9:07 PM
Dude. What is your point? Her comments are outrage-worthy, as well as vapid and nearly meaningless. (Note: the full quote is shown in the video, also). Bryan has it exactly right: she is a middle-aged woman who was told at Harvard to blame America first, and has done so her entire adult life.
Note also that this no-talent woman gets paid several hundred thousand dollars a year by the U of Chicago to do nothing. Maybe that’s why she isn’t proud of this country — maybe she hates affirmative action?
As for her being proud of people uniting and being hopeful, I urge you to explain to me who is united and what they are hopeful for.
You have the floor.
Jaibones on February 18, 2008 at 9:08 PM

aengus on February 18, 2008 at 9:14 PM
No. His second cousin.
And Muslims and animists whatever other religions that their percieved enemies–President Kibaki’s Kikuyu tribe–subscribe to. It’s a tribally-based settling of old and new scores.
Not unless you’re contending that Obama and Odinga got together and concocted the chaos over there.
Many of the American bloggers talking about Kenya are twisting these events to suit their own purposes. And the twisting would be laughable if this weren’t serious business–both here and in Kenya. (My father is Kenyan Luo also.)
Obama and the Mrs. are empty-suit Socialists–reason enough to do everything we can to keep them out of office.
baldilocks on February 18, 2008 at 9:17 PM
I wonder if he took it down because he reconsidered the wording and the context. I’ve seen her quoted two different ways–with in one case the word “proud” standing alone and in another it being modified by “really.” If what she said was that this was the first time she was “really proud” of her country, well–I still don’t like it–but it’s a little more defensible than the implication that she has never (in her adult life) been proud of her country.

However, still too close a connection for me, especially to the WH.
But your comment is the most important, O and the Mrs are empty suit socialists and enough to keep far, far away from the WH.

This story will be ignored by the mainstream media because it puts the lie to the claim that liberals are as patriotic as conservatives. This won’t be picked up by the mainstream media for that reason and because it might draw into the discussion Obama’s church and the statements about the US made by Obama’s preacher–America is racist; we had 9/11 coming because we’re a racist country etc.–and the media DOES NOT want to Obama in a position to have to parse those statements before the general public.
Sean68 on February 18, 2008 at 9:31 PM
I agree baldilocks. I find it worrisome that for some “conservatives” the positions and proposals proudly espoused by these two and their ilk are not on their face enough to cause them to recoil.
There is no need to start digging around for shadowy conspiracies to advance the cause of islamo-fascism due to BHO’s family connexions.
There is plenty of cause to reject this candidate as a leader for this country already out there for all the world to see.
Unless of course one somehow finds the flavor of straight-up Socialism and a cult of personality somehow less objectionable than the tyranny of Sharia.
Deety on February 18, 2008 at 9:36 PM
First you have no proof that she was told to “blame America first” at Harvard — that is your pet theory hence wild speculation.
Second, your past comments about Obama show that you clearly despise him and are evidence of a bit of ODS on your part.
Thirdly, I suspect that you are looking for a reason to be offended - you seem to be covetous of that victim pie you complain about so often the last two years.
Lastly, the most inflammatory sentence was taken from her speech. It elicited the expected outraged comments.
Bradky on February 18, 2008 at 9:38 PM

If this quote is accurate, it displays a view of the place of our country (and western civilization) in history that lacks balance and perspective. It suggests Ms. Obama is part of the Hate-America Left.
