Michelle Obama hasn’t been proud of America in at least 26 years?

That’s what she said today, if this quote is accurate.
“For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country,” she told a Milwaukee crowd today, “because it feels like hope is making a comeback.”
Only her husband’s run for president has made her proud of America? That’s…extremely narcissistic and self-centered.
Nothing America has done in Michelle Obama’s adult life, which at 44 goes back 26 years to 1982, has made her proud of her country? Nothing? Not winning the Cold War? Not our regular and orderly transitions of power based on the rule of law? Not the fact that we feed and defend the world, not that we lead in science and technology research, not that we elected the first black president in 1992…nothing? Not the fact that she and her husband were able to go to Ivy League schools before embarking on extremely lucrative careers? Not the fact that we help out in disasters wherever they strike in the world? Nothing has made Michelle Obama proud of her country in her entire adult life?
How sad. I certainly don’t want such a vain pessimist as First Lady.
Update: Here’s the video.

I wonder if anybody will ask Madam Obama the following questions: Were you proud when George W. Bush nominated the first African-American to be Secretary of State? Were you proud when George W. Bush nominated the second African-American to be Secretary of State? Were you proud when Geroge H.W. Bush nominated Colin Powell to the top positions in the US military?
Were you proud when in the 1980s, the most popular program on television for five straight years was the Cosby Show, which featured an entirely African-American cast? Was that a sign of racism? Were you proud that the most watched daytime show in history is produced and directed and run by an African American woman? Were you proud that an African-American woman from Tennessee knocked the venerable Phil Donahue right off television?
Nobody will ask her a tough question. She is now treated like a royal figure. But maybe someday, some reporter will dare to ask the Obamas a question that is not sycophantic.

Perhaps she is his voice
Truly she speaks like her church that gave its highest award to Farrakhan
She is mate to one whose best friend and mentor bestowed the award upon the white devil warning system, Farrakhan
Not proud of the hundreds of thousands who died fighting for the Union, not a squeak for Lincoln. No lapel flags for the dead of the Ardennes, Normandy, Iwo Jima or WTC
Finding nill in the Marshall plan, or Clinton’s fund to aid Tsunami victims
Handing out free needles in Central Park, or condoms in gay clubs did not suffice
Perhaps she will now be willing to wear the read, black and green African-american flag on her lapel
O the History, rotted and bloated with white devils
Now the Hope, rocket fuel to the White House

Use some logic here people! For heaven’s sake…
If I say, for example, “For the first time in my life I am proud of my son because he finally pitched a no-hitter,” that does not mean I am not proud of him for other things he has done.
So, if you say, “I am proud because of “A,” that does NOT exclude being proud also because of “B,” “C,” or “D.”
Get it?
If I say I ate an apple for the first time today, that does not mean I have never eaten any fruit at all!
Michelle’s “because…” that follows her statement only cites and explains a particular instance of pride. To infer more is a stretch.
Michelle’s words only site a particular instance of pride, in this case that pride engendered by the hope sparked by the Obama campaign. Citing a particular instance of pride, does not imply that pride has never existed in other instances.
