Simon doesn’t like him, but then Simon doesn’t like anyone.
It’s funnier if you remember this but not essential. Click the image to listen.

Age 64? Holy crap, has it really been that long?
SWLiP on February 18, 2008 at 2:25 PM
Ugh, don’t remind me. It’s the only time I have to give up the remote control to my wife.
Kini on February 18, 2008 at 2:29 PM
That. was. AMAZING!
amkun on February 18, 2008 at 2:30 PM
Musically, Sammy Hager can kick David Lee Roth’s butt around the block for drill anytime he wants.
pilamaye on February 18, 2008 at 2:32 PM
The sad thing is that having actually watched some of the Idol auditions, Dave there sounds pretty good.
Blacklake on February 18, 2008 at 2:33 PM
He’s aged 53 but I love the 64 tag… LOL!
Claypigeon on February 18, 2008 at 2:39 PM
Ha! That was hilarious! I saw Dave a few years ago at the Hard Rock in Ft. Lauderdale. He was aweful, and this coming from a huge Van Halen fan. But I hear he’s doin’ a lot better now on tour with VH.
Tony737 on February 18, 2008 at 2:40 PM
I missed that older post somehow. But MAN! this is insane. From the little Idol I’ve seen, it seemed pretty accurate. Loved how he kept going while they were evaluating him.
OneGyT on February 18, 2008 at 2:44 PM
By airing this you are emboldening our enemies!
Grafted on February 18, 2008 at 2:44 PM
Wow. That was “break-a-hip” funny!
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on February 18, 2008 at 2:47 PM
True dat. Don’t you know that we, as the kuffar as well as the Zionists, are “running with the devil?” It’s more like stating a fact than anything else. I bet that this is on Mahmoud’s iPod.
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on February 18, 2008 at 2:49 PM
American Idol is for people with nothing better to do with their time….
Come to think of it, that sums up most broadcast television.
Bubba Redneck on February 18, 2008 at 2:50 PM
All I can say is…RETIRE ALREADY!
kcd on February 18, 2008 at 2:53 PM
I died a little inside. Then I giggled. Well played.
spmat on February 18, 2008 at 3:01 PM
Maybe, but how many of us between the ages of 36-45 didn’t have a copy of “1984″?
Hollowpoint on February 18, 2008 at 3:06 PM
I downloaded mine
john1schn on February 18, 2008 at 3:09 PM
Well I’m not between 36 and 45 but I do have a copy of 1984, only mine’s by the Eurythmics. Love Lennox, way better than Roth or Hagar. Course that’s just my opinion and you know what they say about those.
Oldnuke on February 18, 2008 at 3:27 PM
Am I just not in on the joke? That wasn’t a real AI audition, you know that, right?
Oh, and Pilamaye… you’re full of it.
fabrexe on February 18, 2008 at 3:33 PM
Ah, but Diamond Dave gave the band personality. Van Hagar was boring.
packsoldier on February 18, 2008 at 3:58 PM
Awesome. I have tickets to see them tonight in Tampa. I’m totally psyched!
McLovin on February 18, 2008 at 4:02 PM
As much as I loathe the bubble gum pseudo-pop churned out by AI I have to admit that it surpasses Van Halen’s oeuvre. One band for whose breakup we should be eternally grateful.
Gerard on February 18, 2008 at 4:19 PM
As a frontman Dave can spinning-heel kick Sammy back to Montrose, swaggering and doing mid-air splits in between blows.
exlibris on February 18, 2008 at 4:24 PM
The commenters at the link seem to think this is real…
BadgerHawk on February 18, 2008 at 4:29 PM
Van Hagar
MikeZero on February 18, 2008 at 4:34 PM
D’oh. Stupid html stuff. That should read… Van Hagar “less than” Van Halen.
MikeZero on February 18, 2008 at 4:35 PM
Heh heh heh yes, so many of yesteryears rock stars couldn’t get a contract today to save their lives. It was very rarely about talent, but instead a carefully controlled marketing campaign based popularity contest where the winner was selected based on album/CD sales.
In the old days, luck played as much a part in who got signed as did who you knew or if you just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Today it is no longer about luck or who you know, or even being in the right place at the right time, but totally 100 percent about how many copies the marketing guru’s project the image they create around you is capable of selling.
American Idol is nothing less than a market sampling gimmick disguised as a popularity contest pretending to be a talent show. American Idol isn’t about talent and nobody knows this better than Simon Cowl, it’s about finding which images will sell CD’s. David Lee Roth cant sell a million of anything anymore, hence Simon’s abusive comments.
David Lee Roth has skills and talent, the fact that he can still sell out arena’s is proof of that. It took him years to develop those skills and hone what little talent he had into anything at all, but no honest ration person can claim he does have either. However the marketability of his image to the tune of a million CD sales is long gone hence Simon has no use for him what so ever, and it shows in his comments.
doriangrey on February 18, 2008 at 4:35 PM
So true, so true.
When Jeff Spicolli saved Brooke Shields from drowning, he didn’t blow the reward money hiring Sammy Hagar to play his birthday, he blew the reward money hiring Van Halen circa Diver Down to play his birthday!
SuperCool on February 18, 2008 at 4:56 PM
I get the impression that doriangrey thinks this was real?
Rose on February 18, 2008 at 5:12 PM
David Lee Roth has skills and talent…
Which obviously don’t extend to the arena of drive-time talk radio.
Gerard on February 18, 2008 at 5:16 PM
Man that was pretty bad, lol.
TimboJackson on February 18, 2008 at 5:59 PM
I think he’s sounds pretty good even on the A capella video. Most male rock singers would sound much worse than Dave if you played back just their vocal tracks.
Afterimage on February 18, 2008 at 6:33 PM
If getting impressions isn’t your day job, don’t quit your day job. If it is your day job, whoa, somebody ought to be suing your for falsely representing your abilities.
doriangrey on February 18, 2008 at 6:51 PM
Good god. Somebody run Eddie Murphy immitating James Brown as an offset PLEASE!!!
44Magnum on February 18, 2008 at 6:54 PM
If you are looking for Icons DLR is not the one. Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Dylan, and Clapton are better choices by far – their music has changed in step with their personal journeys through life. I don’t think you’ll see them primping on AI in the forseeable future.. wait a minute they are all in their 60′s already.. never mind ;)
DLR is stuck in a time capsule he can’t get out of.

“Will ya still need me
Will ya still feed me…”
MrC_5150 on February 18, 2008 at 7:39 PM
For those of you with limited performance and recording experience: this is what most of your favorite singers sound like when you isolate their vocal track. Particularly those that rely heavily on backing vocalists.
Still, it’s an entertaining edit.
hippiepunk on February 18, 2008 at 7:57 PM
Dave’s first solo project, “Eat Em and Smile” was far better, from a rock standpoint, than anything from Van Hagar.
Krydor on February 18, 2008 at 7:58 PM
Whistles quietly to self in corner…(something about recording studios and time spent therein) Most vocalists isolated tracks don’t even sound that good. Anyone who didn’t notice that Dave’s AI audition was the isolated vocal track with comments from AI mixed in, well I don’t know what to say to you.
doriangrey on February 18, 2008 at 9:03 PM
Come on! Not a real AI audition. Not by a mile. Simon doesn’t abuse established talent no matter how bad.
Charles Martel on February 18, 2008 at 10:28 PM
Dorian, you made a reference to Simon’s abusive comments. It appeared that you thought they were real.
Rose on February 18, 2008 at 10:53 PM
I got that impression too Rose.
BadgerHawk on February 18, 2008 at 11:14 PM
I remember sneaking around the house around 11:30PM – sitting real close to the TV, turning the volume WAY down…waiting for the “World Premier Video” – “Hot for Teacher” from Van Halen’s 1984.
I was a huge fan, but never I never listened to them once after they ousted Dave.
He’s still great.
Although most of his solo efforts were horrible, his book made him seem like a jerk, everyone who knows him says he’s a jerk, and his radio show was not funny at all.
Diamond Dave.
Dorvillian on February 18, 2008 at 11:46 PM
Hippiepunk beat me to it. I don’t know what all the BS about how hilarious this is was all about. That’s what an isolated vocal track wih no effects sounds like, and it sounded pretty good to me.
CraigC on February 19, 2008 at 12:19 AM
I’m 33, my older brother had it. >:}
Chakra Hammer on February 19, 2008 at 1:05 AM
Sigh, it’s called dark sarcasm Rose, exactly what the supposed AI audition was. How else do you respond to such an obvious sarcastic parody? Pointing out that it was a parody is well kind of like pointing out that the sun is bright or that water is wet.
I spend a good 25 plus years of my life in and out of recording studio’s, a fact I believe the majority of the HotAir regulars are well aware of. I couldn’t help but notice that the AI audition was the isolated vocal tract from the VH album with a audio tract from AI edited in, and I might add not even edited in very well. Listen to the AI audition again and notice the change in volume each time between switches from Dave to the AI panel.
As to the fact that I posted a sarcastic and highly critical response regarding AI, well I seriously doubt anyone here familiar with me or my posting style was surprised or confused by what I wrote.
doriangrey on February 19, 2008 at 1:50 PM
It just seemed strange that since these were comments made by the judges to some of the contestants who tried out this year that you would call them abusive comments towards Mr. Roth. They were obviously not directed at him so how could they be abusive comments towards him? Hence your statement that Simon had no use for him and it showed in his comments had no meaning since the comments weren’t directed towards Roth in the first place.
