Interestingly, both the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce and the Berkeley Convention & Visitors Bureau have prominent statements on the front pages of their web sites that say they do not support the City Council on the Marines issue.

Here is a new link that gives phone, fax, email and mail addresses for the entire Berkeley City Council:

Keep those cards and letters coming folks. Remember, they are counting on us to just fade away after a while. We can't give up until they both apologize to the Marines and rescind the Code Pink parking space. Nothing less will do.

Seeing as the armed forces are about the only entity that can undertake a rescue operation of that size (see the tsunami in Indonesia/Thailand for that one) what will all the stupid little hippies do? I am sure they would rather die of starvation/thirst or bleed to death then to take help from *GASP* a Marine.

It will be New Orleans 2.0. People will be mugging and looting each other, there will be rapes and murders, and the massive amounts of homeless and stoners will accost anyone in nervous worry as the Berzerkleyites try to shut them out from their safehouses. After the quake Berzerkely will blame it on God being angry at Bush and demand the entire country give them unlimited federal relief funds to stop the illegal and immoral Iraq war.

Berkeley is the most worthless town in the United States. Anyone defending it because of UC Brekely: You're part of the problem. If you really want to see Berkely go away, find another university. Berkeley without UC Berkeley is just another Brattleboro Vermont, a desolate, unimportant bastion of dependency and rage.

It will be fun to watch what would happen if the "big one" hit the bay area and Berzerkley in particular.

I do think if the "big one" hit the bay area I will go and protest the US sending our servicemen and women there. No blood for Hippies!

Their Federal funding should STILL be sent to the Marines….what have they done to warrant keeping it.

…all better

THEY decided to reject the federal government, and BUSH more particularly. THEY deserve to lose every last cent, and I do not feel bad if the Chez Panisse mentorship program does not go forward due to lack of funding.

2.1 million earmarked for denied funding is small potatoes compared to the real federal revenue these maoists should lose.

I wish the UC would have the balls to take over peoples' park and assert its sovranty from the city of berzerkeley.

Go Bears!

Our strength rests in our ability to discriminate the good from the bad, which in this case is a no-brainer. This can only be done if all sides can be heard. By defending their right to speak you, in the words of St. Paul, “heap hot coals on their heads” and they show their lack of grey matter. If not, then you end up with a USSR, a PRC, a DPRK, or worst yet a Berkeley. Remember that all someone has to do to show their ignorance is to open their mouth.

Tell me where code pink/Berkeley has allowed the "other side" aka the USMC a voice to speak?

Simply put they have not.

Good question. As I understand it, if the recruiting station were to invite a pregnancy counselor whose advice potentially included information on abortion to come 1 day a week,

Does having an unarmed "insurgent counselor" come and talk to US Marines count as abortion?

If so we can close down Gitmo.

So what happens if we deploy 1 armed Marine to the abortion clinic in Berkeley and turn that into the new recruiting station?

Will code pink block that?

Just asking.

I'm vehemently opposed to abortion, but I'd love to see the reaction to that.

PS: The conservative position would be that this is still not a federal matter, this is a local matter and should be handled locally. We don’t want the feds telling us how much or how little noise we should have in our towns.

bnelson44 on February 16, 2008 at 8:56 PM

So the conservative position is that instruments of the federal government have to put up with harassment from city government?

I don't think so. Yes, zoning and protest permits are certainly the business of local government rather than state or federal. But when the zoning and the protest permits -- and loudspeaker permit ! -- are designed to harass the federal government's military, then the city government in so doing makes it a federal matter.

I see no reason why a city government has the right to harass the federal military.

Now if the city government were truly neutral during these protests, you would have a really good point.

I don't think we should be giving our tax money to Berkley or San Fran. just pull out anything to do with Armed Forces and give their Federal Aid to States that love America. Simple.......

And fifthly, Mr. Anderson, here's to hoping that Berkeley's first responders don't sacrifice their blood and futures trying to save you parasites if ever there happens to be an AQ attack there, or a Northridge 94' quake (or worse) pays you a visit.

Here's to hoping they stay put at their station houses, cus' you're just not worth it. Not one of you.

Not worth a damn, in fact.

Not all of the northern Cali media outlets are apologists for the Berkeley troop-bashers.

I think you misunderstand the situation, Michelle. San Jose is actually far, far, far more conservative than Alameda, tending towards the libertarian; Tom Campbell was Congressman there and never voted out. From what I've read, the News reflects this; although editorials sometimes take a "liberal" side, often they do not. I've worked for a (small) newspaper, and the fact is that headline writers often misstate the content of articles in order to be both compact and "clever." I don't think this reflects an overall "apologist" opinion that the Marines have to need vigilantes to counterbalance their activities.

Still, it's good that, unlike many commenters, you can draw the distinction between "Berkeley city council member against Marine recruitment" and "Californian"; I suspect the vast majority of those fitting the latter description do not approve of the antics in Berkeley.

Want some of the 'bigots' to cross back over John? Give you their vote?....Then pull your damn campaign bus into the parking place, get out, shake a couple of Marine's hands, and then drive on. You don't have to make a Federal issue out of it. Just doing THAT would get you another 500k votes.

I heard another of the city council morons the other day on Michael Medved… she was a total loon. Spouting all this DKos/Soros statistics on Iraq, calling us all rapists and murderers.
BadBrad at 7:23 AM

I happen to hear that fool also. Her level of stupidity is beyond description.

pilamaye at 8:56 AM

Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval appearing on "Hannity & Colmes" to defend the USS Iowa decision and claiming, with a straight face, that "the United States should not have a military."

I 'd like to know why Code Puke's aren't being charged with obstructing a legitimate, licensed business from operating...anyone have any idea?
Curious why the Marines didn't come out and cut the chains and allow the inquisitive young men to enter and receive info about the Marines? Just being Marines above the fray of these drugged up radical hippies I imagine. Like to see em kick some a$$ of the CP's and some of those mealy mouthed cops also, bet they wouldn't be as quick to demonstrate the next time.

Wow! Max Anderson:" We're trying to protect our young people from a distorted, twisted life that can come as a result of being lied to fraudulently enlisted, and coming back to a country that then turns their back on them in terms of health care..."

What about trying to protect our young people from living a life under the threat of terrorism? Or protecting our women from Islam and all the horrors that come with that? What about simply exposing our young people to alternate points of view, besides that of the nutty code pinkers and the commie America Can't Wait wierdos????
