Seeing as the armed forces are about the only entity that can undertake a rescue operation of that size (see the tsunami in Indonesia/Thailand for that one) what will all the stupid little hippies do? I am sure they would rather die of starvation/thirst or bleed to death then to take help from *GASP* a Marine.

It will be New Orleans 2.0. People will be mugging and looting each other, there will be rapes and murders, and the massive amounts of homeless and stoners will accost anyone in nervous worry as the Berzerkleyites try to shut them out from their safehouses. After the quake Berzerkely will blame it on God being angry at Bush and demand the entire country give them unlimited federal relief funds to stop the illegal and immoral Iraq war.

Berkeley is the most worthless town in the United States. Anyone defending it because of UC Brekely: You’re part of the problem. If you really want to see Berkely go away, find another university. Berkeley without UC Berkeley is just another Brattleboro Vermont, a desolate, unimportant bastion of dependency and rage.

I do think if the “big one” hit the bay area I will go and protest the US sending our servicemen and women there. No blood for Hippies!

Their Federal funding should STILL be sent to the Marines….what have they done to warrant keeping it.

THEY decided to reject the federal government, and BUSH more particularly. THEY deserve to lose every last cent, and I do not feel bad if the Chez Panisse mentorship program does not go forward due to lack of funding.

2.1 million earmarked for denied funding is small potatoes compared to the real federal revenue these maoists should lose.

As I understand it, if the recruiting station were to invite a pregnancy counselor whose advice potentially included information on abortion to come 1 day a week, and they put up a sign to that effect in the front window. then Code Pink could be arrested under federal statute for their current behavior.

I’m vehemently opposed to abortion, but I’d love to see the reaction to that.

PS: The conservative position would be that this is still not a federal matter, this is a local matter and should be handled locally. We don’t want the feds telling us how much or how little noise we should have in our towns.

I don’t think so. Yes, zoning and protest permits are certainly the business of local government rather than state or federal. But when the zoning and the protest permits — and loudspeaker permit ! — are designed to harass the federal government’s military, then the city government in so doing makes it a federal matter.

I see no reason why a city government has the right to harass the federal military.

Now if the city government were truly neutral during these protests, you would have a really good point.

I think you misunderstand the situation, Michelle. San Jose is actually far, far, far more conservative than Alameda, tending towards the libertarian; Tom Campbell was Congressman there and never voted out. From what I’ve read, the News reflects this; although editorials sometimes take a “liberal” side, often they do not. I’ve worked for a (small) newspaper, and the fact is that headline writers often misstate the content of articles in order to be both compact and “clever.” I don’t think this reflects an overall “apologist” opinion that the Marines have to need vigilantes to counterbalance their activities.

Still, it’s good that, unlike many commenters, you can draw the distinction between “Berkeley city council member against Marine recruitment” and “Californian”; I suspect the vast majority of those fitting the latter description do not approve of the antics in Berkeley.
