Video: The invincible Russian

posted at 3:22 pm on February 15, 2008 by Allahpundit

Ace linked it in the course of a long blasphemy about Romero and now of course I’m obsessed with figuring out how it was done. I’m guessing that’s a dummy on the roof and there’s an invisible cut between it hitting the pavement and being replaced by the guy (who shows no signs of head injury despite the apparent blood spatter, please note). But watch the jump. The arms are raised and the knees bend and it appears to launch itself. How’d that happen?

The guy’s jeans also appear slightly darker than the dummy’s, but maybe that’s just me. Mild content warning. Click the image to watch.

Wow, it’s definitely cut and hard to tell because the camera is so shakey. That guys head would have splattered like a water balloon.
Pretty cool though.

Geronimo on February 15, 2008 at 3:28 PM

That’s painful to watch.

samuelrylander on February 15, 2008 at 3:28 PM

Um. I think the main explanation is that we’re screwed.
Putin apparently wasn’t kidding when he talked about starting a new arms race.
Holy indestructible russians, batman!

jdub on February 15, 2008 at 3:28 PM

Allah, look at right before the wall kinda turns blue… you will notice the legs go from being sprayed out to moving. It isn’t even a second.

upinak on February 15, 2008 at 3:28 PM

At 48 dpi, and a frame rate of an 8mm antique…yeah…spliced and diced. Then again, you could believe.

Limerick on February 15, 2008 at 3:29 PM

The way he gets up at the end and walks towards the camera is disconcerting.

darii on February 15, 2008 at 3:30 PM

It could have been filmed backwards?

lorien1973 on February 15, 2008 at 3:31 PM

Fake, fake, fake and fake. People do bounce when falling that far.

oakpack on February 15, 2008 at 3:32 PM

what, no bounce? FAKE!

vinman on February 15, 2008 at 3:32 PM

I like the decent blood splattering on the ground…. yet you do not see the blood splatter before he hits.

I think it was a autocad/art graphics thing….

Anyone else?

upinak on February 15, 2008 at 3:34 PM

opps, I meant to say WHEN he hits.

And you are right.. no bouncing… it was like a wet spegetti effect!

upinak on February 15, 2008 at 3:35 PM

So many other worthy videos at that site.

Nutball.

Direct hit!

Something splattered on the sidewalk, and unless it was snot, it should have been blood. Yet there was no blood on his face or shirt. Just shows you that vodka really does make you invincible!

NNtrancer on February 15, 2008 at 3:43 PM

Maybe this is a superdelegate.

Believe.

ronsfi on February 15, 2008 at 3:45 PM

Seems like there is a cut when the guy is about 3/4 of the way down. Pretty freaky though.

My friend fell off a building in East Chicago, IN
about that high, he broke both wrists, ruptured spleen, had some intestines removed, he had tubes up his nose removing bile out of his stomach.

NOT A Pretty sight..

He lived, but he was lucky.

ronsfi on February 15, 2008 at 3:42 PM

AP knows it’s fake, as does anyone slightly less gullible than Obama voters. The question at hand is: how’d they do it?

The jumper is moving before and during the jump. Therefore not a simple mannequin and jumpcut.

The most obvious answer is CG and a bluescreen/rotoscope jump with a professional stuntman, perhaps as a boredom antidote by industry folks idled by the writer’s strike, but it could very well be less complicated than that (cf. Crop Circles). Either way, a nice piece of work. Of course, massive compression artifacting and induced camera shake hides a multitude of flaws.

Chakra Hammer on February 15, 2008 at 3:49 PM

So, I’m guessing he didn’t get up and walk away after. How awful.

TX Mom on February 15, 2008 at 3:52 PM

Nope, he fell on accident!

Thats what happens when people have you working on a roof with ice on it… >:}

Chakra Hammer on February 15, 2008 at 3:56 PM

Yep – no bounce is a “dead” giveaway.

It looks to me like a dummy from the start – the knee bends and arm raises don’t look natural. There’s no real need to jump up – a person would probably just step off or out. I’d say a couple of wires to animate the jump and a splice to finish.

DreadWolf on February 15, 2008 at 3:57 PM

Wow, Obama is empowering people already!

Grafted on February 15, 2008 at 3:58 PM

Kind of reminds me of another video I saw some time ago, of the Afgan diving team.

AverageJoe on February 15, 2008 at 4:02 PM

It’s not blasphemy. It’s truth. Romero is over-rated to the same epic proportions as the Doors.

John Carpenter is the real thing. A stinking commie, but the real thing nonetheless.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 15, 2008 at 4:04 PM

Kind of reminds me of another video I saw some time ago, of the Afgan diving team.

That was the Iraqi diving team:

There appears to be a very clear frames right about 12 feet, or below the horizontal line marking the top of the first concrete wall panel. My guess is he jumped twice, once into one of those emergency air bags and a second time from a relatively safe height onto bare ground, then spliced at the point where he was horizontal on the second jump.

If I’m right then one can watch in slow-motion and see much better where splice occurred because of the change in clarity of the moving body of the man.

I make no commentary as to why the same video can be used for either country.

AverageJoe on February 15, 2008 at 4:25 PM

I’m not saying the video is real, but I knew a guy once that worked on an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico when he was young. While he was there, a worker fell from a similar height down to the steel deck, landing body-slam style. He got up and walked a few steps before collapsing and dying.

jaime on February 15, 2008 at 4:33 PM

Hey didn’t John Edwards say that when John Kerry was elected that people would rise up and walk??? Do you think he really got elected and Bush is just his puppet? This video makes me wonder what really is going on in Washington.

Do Ron Paul’s people know about this?

USBB on February 15, 2008 at 4:35 PM

Yeah, I have to side with Ace on Romero. He’s been milking his one success for decades in a way that would make Stallone blush. And DRI’s dissection (autopsy?) of Land of the Dead should be the definitive review of that POS.

justkevin on February 15, 2008 at 4:36 PM

The footage of the jumper was edited into the video afterwards. It’s a real person jumping, just not jumping in that scene.

Vincenzo on February 15, 2008 at 4:57 PM

Download the FLV if you want to be able to analyze it more closely.

The Quicktime player is nice because you can take it frame by frame.

The frame at 15.24 looks suspiciously pixelated. This is the frame where he hits. The frame before is significantly clearer, as is the frame after it. I’m guessing that this is the cut. That would explain why the dummy doesn’t bounce. Still, how’d they do the actual jump? It was convincing!

Mark Jaquith on February 15, 2008 at 5:23 PM

Maybe it was a scene from next season’s installment of “Heroes”.

Virus-X on February 15, 2008 at 6:18 PM

You gotta be tough if you want to survive in Putin’s Russia…

Jim Treacher on February 15, 2008 at 7:38 PM

See what ya do is have a guy jump to his death then cut it with a 2nd guy that gets up. Simple.
