Unfortunately certain members of our political class see this guy as the bigger threat to our way of life (as they see it, naturally).

Neo on February 15, 2008 at 8:55 AM

One tough old bird.

Snake307 on February 15, 2008 at 8:55 AM

100% Texan! Can’t beat ‘em.

texasgirl on February 15, 2008 at 9:04 AM

“They best not come back.”

Gotta love it.

AZCoyote on February 15, 2008 at 9:05 AM

Good thing the Dembots have finally decided that gun control is a loser issue.

flipflop on February 15, 2008 at 9:06 AM

Good on ya, bud.

Midas on February 15, 2008 at 9:06 AM

God bless this heroic man. He should be honored at the White House so the people can see the difference between Conservatives and Liberals, however El Presidente al-Haj Jorge Wahabi Bush is no conservative.

Hilts on February 15, 2008 at 9:07 AM

That guy is awesome. Never let the government take our guns away.

WisCon on February 15, 2008 at 9:08 AM

The Duke Incarnate.

wildweasel on February 15, 2008 at 9:10 AM

“I got no business being a hero”
“He best not come back”
This guy just keeps getting better and better, send him to the Berkley PD!

Grafted on February 15, 2008 at 9:11 AM

Tough as f***ing boot leather! Unfortunately we are losing tough old codgers like him every day. I love it when an old-timer schools young punks like that.

txsurveyor on February 15, 2008 at 9:12 AM

*claps* very nice. Another person saved by lack of ‘gun control.’

TheFluke on February 15, 2008 at 9:13 AM

When are thugs going to figure out that old coots in Texas are more likely armed than not? What is this, the sixth story like this in just the last year? Thieves should target the houses with the Priuses in front. Those people won’t defend themselves. Don’t pick on the places with the old beat-up pickup truck with the “Army Vet” sticker on the window.

aero on February 15, 2008 at 9:13 AM

Once again an example of the 2nd amendment at work! He would have been dead before the cops got there.

flytier on February 15, 2008 at 9:14 AM

That guy rocks! I love seeing outcome like this. Too bad the guy didn’t take the two idiots out of the gene pool for good. :D

Afterimage on February 15, 2008 at 9:16 AM

Hey! Now you know that you’re not supposed to feel proud of this vicious gun toting madman. But you are supposed to feel pity for the poor victim of this lunatic’s rage. He was only trying to earn a living. I mean, if this evil man had only shared what he had with these upstanding, financially deprived young men, instead of hording it, none of this would have happened.

Ya know, sadly there are nuts out there who actually think like this. I say give him a medal.

thekingtut on February 15, 2008 at 9:17 AM

What’s wrong with this guy? Is he just trigger happy? Does he just like shooting people?

/

All kidding aside, very cool guy. “He best not come back”, best line.

amerpundit on February 15, 2008 at 9:19 AM

If I’m Juan McCain (thank God I’m not), I would be at his house filming my next TV ad.

On second thought, he probably would like the border sealed… scratch that.

Big Orange on February 15, 2008 at 9:22 AM

There was a time in my Texas, that if you walked onto a mans property uninvited, especially at night, you were considered ‘bought and paid for’…you didn’t even go to court.

The local funeral home just came and picked up the body.

DoctorDentons on February 15, 2008 at 9:22 AM

true american
i have the same Picture of “The Duke” on my wall lol

trailortrash on February 15, 2008 at 9:25 AM

That gentleman is a true hero.

It sickens me when punks like those two try (in this case) to target the elderly. They are cowards and a waste of air.

God bless that old Texan!

Nineball on February 15, 2008 at 9:25 AM

You know, this story is in sharp contrast to one I saw on CNN last night. A woman was sobbing about the toxic chemicals in the FEMA trailer that she’s been living in since the storm hit. Crying, she said, “The government is supposed to take care of us. I just feel so angry and let down. The government isn’t doing its job!”

Since when is it the government’s job to “take care” of people two and a half years after a storm? How many years does this woman expect to live in temporary housing at taxpayers’ expense? The rest of her freaking life, I’m guessing. She was not old, she was not uneducated. She spoke well and looked able-bodied. What the heck are thousands of people like her still doing living in those trailers?! Toxic chemicals are bad, sure, but they wouldn’t have affected these people if they had moved on and restarted their lives promptly like they were supposed to.

Anyway, the old man in this clip is 80 years old and takes care of himself. He wouldn’t sit around whining about how other people don’t do enough for him. I wish he could go kick the trailer lady’s rear end and tell her to take care of herself and stop expecting the government to put her life back together for her.

aero on February 15, 2008 at 9:26 AM

If this had happened in NYC, they’d have arrested the elderly man and charged him with attempted murder.

Urban Infidel on February 15, 2008 at 9:27 AM

HERO ! Give this man a medal.

But lefties would make it a crime to hurt a burglar in your own home. Slam the window on his head and go to jail for assault and battery. (Then to re-education camp for multiculturalism training.)

petefrt on February 15, 2008 at 9:31 AM

100% Texan! Can’t beat ‘em.

texasgirl on February 15, 2008 at 9:04 AM

Good on the old fellah, without a doubt. But just out of interest, where were the 2 hoodlums from?

Now that’s funny! Thanks for the good laugh.

txsurveyor on February 15, 2008 at 9:33 AM

Hoooaaaaaaa! But the next time you’re attacked use a larger, hollow point round.

rplat on February 15, 2008 at 9:33 AM

God bless ‘im. Good man!

Jaibones on February 15, 2008 at 9:34 AM

Good for him!

I think in the future, he’s going to be keeping more than a Derrigner on him at all times.

Thankfully, Texas I believe has passed a version of the Castle Doctrine, like we just got here in Missouri. It gives legal protection from using deadly force in a situation like that. Before that, depended on the juristiction, if you didn’t make the attempt to flee, you could be sued, even criminally charged.

JamesLee on February 15, 2008 at 9:40 AM

The lame stream media would never point this out:

“Nevertheless, in a ten state sample of incarcerated felons interviewed in 1982, 34% reported having been ‘scared off, shot at, wounded or captured by an armed victim.’”

Study: “Armed Resistance to Crime: The Prevalence and Nature of Self-Defense with a Gun.” By Gary Kleck and Marc Gertz. Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology (Northwestern University School of Law), 1995.

So does my dad and uncle.

HERO ! Give this man a medal.

petefrt on February 15, 2008 at 9:31 AM

This best thing about this generation (my granfathers’ generation) is that they did not want to be called heroes. They are Americans. They just wanted to live their lives in peace. They did what was asked of them to preserve, protect, and defend their freedom. They know the values of hard work and honesty. They know what is right and what is wrong. They know what is good and what is evil. Because of the left in this country, those lines have been blurred beyond recognition, and what we end up with is those two turds that hopefully will rot in prison for an extended length of time.

I hope this jerks don’t go to “white collar resort” prison. I hope they go to federal “pound me in the a$$” prison.

I miss my grandfathers.

In memoriam, Robert Morley Easlick, Sr. (US Army – Korea) and Paul Nicholas Pappas (US Navy – WWII Pacific).

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on February 15, 2008 at 9:51 AM

But just out of interest, where were the 2 hoodlums from?

Oklahoma, most likely.

I keed. I joke.

Don’t mess with Texas, people. And that man is Texas.

LimeyGeek on February 15, 2008 at 10:01 AM

I applaud that gentleman. He did what real men in our country know to do and he’s not apologizing for it. What would have happened to him if he lived in Chicago or Washington D.C. instead of Texas?

As for the criminals, the fools ought to know you never take a knife to a gunfight.

flyfisher on February 15, 2008 at 10:05 AM

I wonder why the local FOX channel didn’t send Rebecca Aguilar to interview this guy. Is she still on suspension for the last local guy like this she interviewed?

In case y’all forgot who she is

cozmo on February 15, 2008 at 10:06 AM

JamesLee on February 15, 2008 at 9:40 AM

Yup. The Castle Doctrine passed last Sept. / Oct.

Not only does it allow a person to stand his ground rather than attempt to flee, it largely curtails a surviving bad guy or his family coming after the good guy in civil court.

BowHuntingTexas on February 15, 2008 at 10:08 AM

The entire western world could use a lot more Americans like him. God bless him.

Canadian Infidel on February 15, 2008 at 10:08 AM

I LOVED the part where he was about to start talking about what gun he would use next then stops “Err, shut up. They best not come back”. That shut up was just funny. And the follow up line could not be more serious.

Those two better thank their luck that they are alive and NEVER come near that man again. He will not miss and will have a much more powerful gun next time.

Voidseeker on February 15, 2008 at 10:25 AM

Maybe they could use him for the new PE course I’m advocating for the colleges.

michaelo on February 15, 2008 at 10:30 AM

Only problem was I ran out of bullets.

Some young punks don’t understand how some people got to be tough old men…they got that way by being tough. They see an easy target and wind up getting their @## handed to them.

Boot Hill on February 15, 2008 at 10:33 AM

michaelo on February 15, 2008 at 10:30 AM

Dude, I’m down. Where do I sign up?

I had to over the procedures that are to be followed in the event of an active shooting (threat of violence) with my microbiology students last night. I gave them the gentle reminder that they are in a “Victim Full Zone.”

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on February 15, 2008 at 10:35 AM

Hey now! I’m a pro-gun conservative who drives a Prius.

And if that guy lived in DC he’d be in jail right now. No one is allowed to own a gun out here.

CookeyD on February 15, 2008 at 10:37 AM

I was sad to read that the bullet missed the punks spine. A lifetime of paralysis seems a fair trade for assaulting an elderly veteren.

JayHaw Phrenzie on February 15, 2008 at 10:52 AM

Hey now! I’m a pro-gun conservative who drives a Prius.

Really? That sounds like a punchline to a bad joke.

You must have a death wish. For Consumers Reports…

Toyota Prius

The Toyota Prius hybrid earned a Good score in frontal crash protection, but it was damaged badly enough in the side impact that without optional side-curtain air bags, the test barrier impacted the dummy’s head–earning the car a marginal rating. Tests indicated that in the real world, a serious brain injury would likely be the result. When equipped with side-impact air bags, injury measures for the Prius were low and the side-impact rating improved to Good.

El Presidente al-Haj Jorge Wahabi Bush

Perfecto!

stenwin77 on February 15, 2008 at 11:02 AM

Anyone know of a way to snag that video off of that site? I’d kind of like to show it to my 82 y/o grandfather who only has dial-up WebTV, and lives way out by the lake on some private road (so I can’t piggyback on any wireless signals if I bring my laptop).

RightWinged on February 15, 2008 at 11:19 AM

Thieves should target the houses with the Priuses in front. Those people won’t defend themselves.

Hey, that’s not fair. I have a Prius. Also a concealed handgun permit. And I’m a Texan too.

docdave on February 15, 2008 at 11:21 AM

He got roughed up pretty good but it seems he gave more than he got. Good for him. If the Left had their way regarding gun ownership then he’d likely be another defenseless victim and be even more injured if not dead.

Yakko77 on February 15, 2008 at 11:28 AM

Oh, I forgot to mention that I was a 73 year old coot.

docdave on February 15, 2008 at 11:28 AM

clghitis on February 15, 2008 at 11:37 AM

…he best not come back.

Gotta love it. And a John Wayne fan too.

Apparently this fella didn’t pursue a Liberal Arts degree in an American University.

Montana on February 15, 2008 at 11:55 AM

LOVE this guy! Next time though, we need to fit him out with a 9mm or a .40 S&W Compact so he can still slip it in his pocket but dust them on them on the spot, in case they don’t heed his advice about “Best not come back.”

cry havoc on February 15, 2008 at 11:58 AM

“They best not come back.”

Sweet.

Troy Rasmussen on February 15, 2008 at 12:06 PM

I wish he would’ve shot both those bastards through the head. Next time, he should have the shotgun propped up next to the door.

Virus-X on February 15, 2008 at 12:22 PM

Do not, repeat, do not, mess with Texas. Or real Texans. I keep a 12 gauge in my living room, a .38 in the office at my home, and a 9mm in the bedroom. I hope like hell I never have to use them. But that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t.
Republic of Texas may just be the last bastion of the 2nd Amendment.

mikeyslaw on February 15, 2008 at 12:24 PM

Lets take a quick count;
1. WWII vet = Hero
2. Firefighter = Hero
3. Tough SOB who KATN = Hero

I am sorry Sir, I do believe that makes you a True American HERO.

HotAirExpert on February 15, 2008 at 12:26 PM

I hope both those dumbo ears idiots make someone a happy butt buddy in prison.

Kini on February 15, 2008 at 12:34 PM

Two young men try to rob Mr. Pickett and he sends one of them to the hospital with a message “Better not come back”. Mr. Pickett, from one Texan John Wayne fan to another, you have “True Grit” sir.

Obviously these morons that tried to rob Mr. Pickett never heard the saying, “Don’t bring a knife to a gun fight”. They should feel glad about what they got away with…a second chance to live.

If you’re gonna try to screw with people, best leave Texas.

Lone Star on February 15, 2008 at 12:37 PM

The libs will scream about how we need gun control, but I say gun control was there. He controlled his gun well enough to hit his target and to me that is gun control. The man may say he isn’t a hero but I have always believed that a hero is one who inspires others to raise above the norm, therefore you are a hero Sir. God Bless you always

limowilliam on February 15, 2008 at 12:51 PM

Damn, and I’m in gun-grabbing England.

The only guns among the population are with the crooks.

limowilliam on February 15, 2008 at 1:54 PM

Awesome story. He reminds me of my grandpa. Kudos to the local news, too. They were respectful and seemed genuinely thrilled with this man and this story. No attempts to make us feel sorry for the bad guys or to imply that the “old coot” shouldn’t have shot them. Good to know that the news sometimes can get the story right.

TX Mom on February 15, 2008 at 1:57 PM

By the way, to docdave and any other old coots reading this thread, when I use the term “old coot,” it is with affection and humor, not rancor or insult. My dad, who is 75, calls himself an old coot all the time. So I don’t see it as an insulting term. Hope you don’t, either.

aero on February 15, 2008 at 2:00 PM

OT: Why do people say “Good ‘on’ ” instead of “Good ‘for’ “? Is that an Internet thing?

tlynch001 on February 15, 2008 at 10:10 AM

It far, far, far predates the internet. Not sure, but I think Twain used it. It’s an old Southron thing, and while “good for you” is quite literal, “good on you” has a little bit more “you deserve reward” in its meaning.

And “Good on you” is more likely to be used ironically, BTW.

Merovign on February 15, 2008 at 2:22 PM

Awesome!

Tzetzes on February 15, 2008 at 5:18 PM

Well, when Obama’s “Global Tax” passes, it will also ban this guy’s guns. Making him a safe target for predators. Which I guess is Obama’s purpose all along.
