When he says his appeal cuts across all lines, he’s not kidding. What other candidate could bring the Japanese into the same tent as Daniel Ortega?

Every religion needs its own holy city.

I’m thinking Hiroshima and Nagasaki weren’t enough. Anybody agree?

Andy in Agoura Hills on February 15, 2008 at 2:28 PM

No one’s disturbed by the fact that foreign leaders are pushing for him as president?

amerpundit on February 15, 2008 at 2:28 PM

Yeah, I like Sushi also, but I wouldn’t vote for it.

Kini on February 15, 2008 at 2:28 PM

Heh, that’s kind of amusing.

Anyway, a common name is reason enough to drive people to the polls. Identity politics 4evah!

Such a genocidal comment is uncalled for. The people of this town are likely rooting for him just because of the coincidence between their town name and his, rather than because they are socialists or Islam panderers. How many Japanese fit that description?

infidelpride on February 15, 2008 at 2:37 PM

“Every Tuesday is Super Tuesday” Ha.

They have actual pinball parlors in Japan?

Well, first of all, it was not a genocidal comment. Just like fire-bombing Dresden is not a genocidal comment. If you want political correctness from me, you’re lookin’ in the wrong place. Secondly, and most importantly, if these Japanese citizens think Obama is good for their security, they deserve that comment.

This feels a tad unnatural coming from me, but the sentiment is there – Dude.

LimeyGeek on February 15, 2008 at 2:48 PM

Like I’ve said before, it’s no dumber a reason to support him than his policies.

Mark V. on February 15, 2008 at 2:52 PM

They should appoint him mayor and get him out of here. I mean, he was born in Hawaii so Japan should come natural to him.

NNtrancer on February 15, 2008 at 2:54 PM

My understanding — from another news story — is that “Obama” means “beach” in Japanese.

Whose “beach” is Barak?

Japanese only make up 16.7% of Hawai’i’s population.
Besides, Obama would never fit in Japanese politics. He’s gaikokujin.

Kini on February 15, 2008 at 3:05 PM

In other news, the residents of Bitcheecow throw their full support behind Hillary.

Dresden, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were all justified during WWII. But nuking a city in today’s Japan just because its peeps are rooting for an US candidate for probably no other reason than he happens to share their name is uncalled for. The Japanese people here aren’t thinking about security – how many Jihadi attacks have happened against Japan? – they’re just going with the symbolism. It’s not pc to suggest that of all the people in the world that deserve to be nuked, they don’t happen to be among them.

I don’t care if he’s gaikokujin or godzilla, we’re still better with him there. As for Hawaii, last time I was there, which was admittedly long ago, I could have sworn I’d landed in Japan.

MrScribbler on February 15, 2008 at 3:04 PM

Barack doesn’t have a beach, but all his substance is beached on the shores of Mirage Bay.

BKennedy on February 15, 2008 at 3:32 PM

Obama, Japan? Heck, I’ve already been to Clinton, MD.

“Mr. Obama’s words touch people’s hearts. They’re very moving.” (If I caught that correctly)

Gag me with a chopstick! Even in Japan, it’s about ♫feelings, nothing more than feelings♫.

Bigfoot on February 15, 2008 at 4:23 PM

Hey Bigfoot, Mr. Obama’s words touched my heart too.

First I got a chill, then heartburn ensued. BaRon OBurgandy is sooooo sued!

Well, I’m not too concerned about the Mayor of Obama, because I think of him more as a Mayor of a Podunk Japanese town. And who can blame them. I’m guessing the tourist throughput in Obama, Japan could increase 1000% per year, which might amount to 10 people of he is elected. Plus, the Japanese have a uniquely Japanese way of celebrating all of this:

Wonder what happens if he’s elected, goes for a visit, and runs right smack into that dude?

tacky and classless. there is a difference between political correctness and basic common courtesy and decency. apparently, i will not look for either from you.
