Video: “Dude” Incident in Baltimore: The Sequel
posted at 5:55 pm on February 15, 2008 by Bryan
Remember the Baltimore police officer who got into a “dude” match with skateboarding kids? Well, he also got into an altercation with an artist who admittedly ran an annoying little psychological experiment at the city’s Inner Harbor. The artist put a remote control car under a box and moved it around, taping people’s reactions. Real original, there, genius. He probably won a $60,000 NEA grant for it.
Click the image to play. If you feel like it, stick around for the unbelievably cheezy promo for the station’s weather guy that follows it. I really don’t know why TV stations think audiences give a whit for seeing their weather guy dance badly.
What do you think this guy’s deal is? I’m guessing that the silly-looking patrol car he’s forced to shoehorn himself into has at least a little to do with all that anger.

Gee whiz.
This cop is like the cop in the old SNL routine: “Pull over, buddy! Yer havin’ too much fun.”
davidk on February 15, 2008 at 6:01 PM
I didn’t watch the first video with the skateboarder, just the clips they showed in this one. I don’t know anything about the first, but in this case, what the hell? What kind of power trip are some people on? This guy does not need to be in authority over anyone.
samuelrylander on February 15, 2008 at 6:03 PM
He obviously takes his duties to the pedestrians on his beat very seriously. That being said, thank you notes did not cross my mind at this little episode.
Funny thing about getting caught on tape twice. Wonder if he buys lottery tickets?
RushBaby on February 15, 2008 at 6:03 PM
Some cops are more “badge heavy” than others.

17 years as a meter maid in a clown car would make me mad, too … but, then, well, there are other careers to pursue.
laelaps on February 15, 2008 at 6:06 PM
Dude has his head up his a$$. Anger issues anyone?
Andy in Agoura Hills on February 15, 2008 at 6:07 PM
‘roid rage in a yellow shirt, in a wacky little clown car= your tax dollars at work!
This is why we need a fully armed citizenry.
Scribbler on February 15, 2008 at 6:07 PM
Defiantly has his Jihad on. Baltimore harbor is a fun place with lots of activities going on.
My question is, what was the artist doing wrong?
Kini on February 15, 2008 at 6:11 PM
Well, if it blew up in his face you’d know. The “experiment” was designed to provoke a response and it got one from the one guy in the area responsible for keeping people safe.
TheBigOldDog on February 15, 2008 at 6:15 PM
Putting a remote controlled car in a box makes you an artist?
Chuck Schick on February 15, 2008 at 6:15 PM
I question the timing.
Also, an art student. What more needs to be said.
rayvet on February 15, 2008 at 6:16 PM
Uh, you’re not defending this cop, are you? Do you really think he’d have kicked the box if he actually thought it was an IED?
flipflop on February 15, 2008 at 6:17 PM
Nazis used to have much cooler uniforms.
Akzed on February 15, 2008 at 6:18 PM
LOL! Dont get me started on the NEA!
southsideironworks on February 15, 2008 at 6:18 PM
Too bad he didn’t taze him too; that would have made the video a lot more entertaining.
lorien1973 on February 15, 2008 at 6:18 PM
Do you know he didn’t? This is a busy tourist area not far from the Nation’s capital. We are at war with terrorists. Do you think he went over just for the fun of it?
TheBigOldDog on February 15, 2008 at 6:21 PM
The “artist” got a reaction from the cop, that’s what the purpose was. The “artist” then made up some BS about what the cop said off camera.
southsideironworks on February 15, 2008 at 6:23 PM
I don’t think he has a taser cuz’ he certainly would have used it.
Maybe the BPD knows about his “silly little anger problem”??
Talon on February 15, 2008 at 6:23 PM
No, I don’t. But if he thought that and he went ahead and kicked it anyway, he’s even more stupid than he makes himself look in these video clips.
flipflop on February 15, 2008 at 6:24 PM
Yeah, you’re defending a stupid cop that kicks a moving box. What if it blew up in his face? Looks like with his brain smarts it would have taken off his leg.
There was nothing suspicious about a moving box. BTW when have you seen moving bombs under cardboard boxes?
This is nothing more than a pure mean cop.
Kini on February 15, 2008 at 6:25 PM
The first episode was better.
Baraka on February 15, 2008 at 6:27 PM
Hopefully all this public humiliation will convince Officer Rivieri that he needs anger management counseling.
Nah. That would be for the box thing. He belongs in jail for the skateboarding kid thing.
inviolet on February 15, 2008 at 6:27 PM
Or he just has balls. The balls to put himself at risk for the safety of others. That’s what separates people like him from those who criticize him and laugh at his uniform and his vehicle. Of coarse if you’re ass was on the line and he came to your rescue you’d kiss his feet.
TheBigOldDog on February 15, 2008 at 6:27 PM
This cop is nuts.
Some of these cops are acting like it’s 1942 Nazi Germany!
My God! Whatever happened to “Protect and to Serve?”
JellyToast on February 15, 2008 at 6:28 PM
I think Officer Rivera was out of line with the skateboarder. This latest video is just meant to antagonize people and is a non issue.
southsideironworks on February 15, 2008 at 6:30 PM
Oh, come off it. Not once did I say a thing about his uniform or his car…scroll back and check.
I’m a law and order type just like most others here, but I recognize the fact that not all cops are knights in shining armor. Some of them are complete asshats and have no business wearing the badge.
flipflop on February 15, 2008 at 6:30 PM
I wonder what your reaction would have been if it blew up and killed him or if he ignored it and some kid came along and it blew up and killed him instead.
TheBigOldDog on February 15, 2008 at 6:32 PM
Yeah, and he’s using his other head to think also.
If there was a perceived threat then there’s a procedure to protect life and property. In this case, he jumped out of his clown car and like a clown kicked the box. How is this using anything but his d!ck to think? He’s just angry and angry cop is a danger to everyone.
Kini on February 15, 2008 at 6:32 PM

Right. And I can just hear you now if he blocked off the area and called in the bomb squad. Please, cops can’t win with you people. Instead of being grateful you find an excuse to condemn (until you need them of coarse.)
TheBigOldDog on February 15, 2008 at 6:37 PM
All due respect, TheBigOldDog, but really, he didn’t think it was something dangerous. No halfway intelligent adult treats a thing that way which he thinks might blow up. No, either he was just angry, or possibly he thought it was a squirrel or something that would run away when the box was kicked. Kicking the little car after that was just peevishness.
inviolet on February 15, 2008 at 6:37 PM
Or he is seriously lacking in intelligence about how to handle a possible explosive. Take your pick.
inviolet on February 15, 2008 at 6:38 PM
Oh, come off it. I never once mentioned his uniform or car…scroll back and check.
I’m a law and order type just like most people here, but I’m not naive enough to think every cop is a knight in shining armor. Some of them are just wankers who have no business wearing a badge.
Maybe he should kick the stroller that lady’s pushing…that’s not a baby, it’s a bomb!
flipflop on February 15, 2008 at 6:39 PM
Of coarse you would because you don’t have the common sense to be grateful for a man who has put his life on the line for 17 years. You have no idea what this guys record is. You have no idea what this man has done, but you see him kick a box and you’re infuriated. JHC what is this country coming to?
TheBigOldDog on February 15, 2008 at 6:40 PM
*ugh* Double post because I thought my “a$$hat” word filtered out the first one.

I know cops. I work with a lot of them. And I know for a fact that most of them have a sense of humor, and most of them keep their cool in situations where most of us would completely lose it.
This guy is a joke. He’s the 1% that gives the other 99% a bad rap. People think this is how cops treat citizens, and its just not true.
This guy should have been fired so long ago. Probably never hired.
Professor Blather on February 15, 2008 at 6:41 PM
Again, all due respect, and speaking for myself, but this by itself? Rather amusing.
However. I saw the first video, of the skateboarding kid, first. And that has made all the difference. /Robert Frost off

We have an equally annoying weatherboy named Justin here in Nashville. He looks to be about 14. I think it must be a sign of the apocalypse when your weathermen are named “Justin.”
In regards to the cop…what an ass. Maybe he never got a remote controlled toy growing up?

reine.de.tout on February 15, 2008 at 6:51 PM
Yes, 17 years of stealing skateboards, manhandling 14 year old boys, and breaking remote controlled cars. Give me a break. I was actually defending this clown when I first saw the skateboarder video. I thought he deserved the benefit of the doubt. But after seeing this? The sooner they take his badge, the better.
c6gunner on February 15, 2008 at 6:54 PM
His incident with the skateboarder alone was sufficient to put him on unpaid leave while they investigate/deliberate. Most cops are brave, selfless public servants who deserve the benefit of the doubt when citizens claim abuse. But excusing or overlooking obvious abuses of power like the one Rivieri displayed with that kid serves only to diminish public trust and to give rise to general anti-police sentiments which are undeserved and counter-productive to the mission of that majority of cops who dedicate their lives to serving and protecting.
flip on February 15, 2008 at 6:55 PM
The only thing missing from this video was some guy getting mugged in the background while this goof goes ballistic on the artist.

Steve at Hog on Ice, who used to intern at the legal aid office in Miami, posted just a few days ago that he’d seen his share of hearings regarding cops accused of giving their wives fat lips and black eyes. Money quote:
“If you want to tarnish your mental image of the police in a hurry, go work for a domestic violence prosecutor for a week. It turns out the cops don’t just hassle strangers. They practice at home.”
Alex_SF on February 15, 2008 at 7:20 PM
Oh, thank you, Officer Rivieri, for bullying and terrorizing 14-year-old skateboarders and 20-something slackers for us, because they’re such dangerous threats to public safety and law and order. We’re ever so grateful that you use your authority under the color of law to get in these dangerous criminals’ faces and yell at them like a pro wrestler calling out his opponent in a TV promo. What ever would we do without you and your kind?
Gimme a friggin’ break, and spare us the drama-queen fantasy of the exploding box. Guess he’d better shoot kites out of the sky too, because you never know whether they could be sprinkling anthrax on the populace below. Sheesh. Is this still a free country? Don’t bother answering; I think I already know.
Oh, and it’s “course.” “Coarse” is Rivieri’s demeanor.
Alex_SF on February 15, 2008 at 7:33 PM
He is probably mad 24/7, but trying to squeeze in a shirt and shorts that are two sizes too small increases the anger.
He is too fat to walk the beat.
And having to drive clown car only escalates the anger a couple more notches.
slp on February 15, 2008 at 7:35 PM
The cop was just pissed because the remote control car was bigger than his “cruiser.”
D2Boston on February 15, 2008 at 7:41 PM
His anger comes from both that tiny car plus that weird bumblebee outfit he is forced to wear. Strangest police car and uniform ever!

There are worse jobs in law enforcement. Imagine sitting in a small, smelly enclosure, day after day, until finally comes your chance to enforce The Law: Larry Craig has nudged your foot.

Man! I just wanna whip that guys ass.
We see how he treats 14 year olds and art students, I like to see how he does with with my lean 210#s.
They gotta get rid of this lardass freak before he hurts some one.
TheSitRep on February 15, 2008 at 8:33 PM
To say this Officer Rivieri has “issues” is just warming up on the general subject of exactly what is this guy doing on the streets of Baltimore wearing a badge in the first place. This clown is a anger management sociologist’s dream come true. They could easily spend the next ten years studying this guy and the various things that seem to trigger him off, like artist with remote control cars and skateboarders. Throw a jaywalker at this guy and all hell would most likely bust loose. My only question is does the force actually allow this guy to carry a gun?
pilamaye on February 15, 2008 at 8:50 PM
Heh, that was my first thought.

I think TheBigOldDog IS Officer Riveri.
Insomniac on February 15, 2008 at 9:49 PM
heh. pull that kind of crap out of the city …
Riveri would count himself lucky with a broken nose.
If you or I did what he did with the skate boarder … We would be facing assault charges and some time.
Bet he gets off and an opportunity to retire early.
Where do y’all get this stuff? LE has “no” obligation to protect you. Read your local statutes. It’s called a no duty clause.
You’re responsible for protecting/defending your own read end.

TheBigOldDog on February 15, 2008
Oh, I get it! You do a good job for 17 years and that gives you the right to walk the streets putting children in headlocks, screaming in their faces and kicking their property! I guess it’s sort of like tenure to a college professor!
Put your time in as a cop, keep your nose clean and then someday you too will have earned the right to walk the streets threatening and beating up citizens at random!
See a jay walker? No problem. Don’t just ticket him,, you’ve earned the right after 17 years to kick his teeth in!
Parking meter violation?! Have some fun and teach the law breaker some respect! Slash his tires and bust his windshield!
See some kids littering? Go for it and teach them all who the real boss is! Grab that litter and stuff it down their throats! Make em choke and spit then stuff it down some more! Yell and scream! Crush their throats with your boot!
You’ve earned it! Enjoy it!

Cops are upstanding people who do not behave this way. The person in the video was obviously an impostor. They serve and protect us making our lives safe. Without their service and protection there would be chaos. The badge and gun does not go to their heads and make them behave like authoritarian, bullying pigs. Any derogatory labels such as pig, fascist, various expletives or the like should not be applied to our heroes in blue.
Police brutality is not a major problem. Having Republicans in power does not make the problem worse. The police are not institutionally racist. They do not abuse their power and exceed their authority. Do not call cops pigs. Do not call all cops pigs. Cops are not pigs. You should not hate cops. You should not hate all cops.

They need to get this bully off the street. Give him a desk job or fire him, I don’t much care which.
He should be able to calmly explain to people what it is they are doing wrong. Instead, he comes out kicking and screaming and throwing people around like a friggin jackass.
Bottom line, he certainly could not pass a job aptitude test for cops. They need to find something else for this idiot to do.
