John Lewis defects from Hillary to Obama Update: Or not

It’s big.

Representative John Lewis, an elder statesman from the civil rights era and one of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s most prominent black supporters, said Thursday night that he planned to cast his vote as a superdelegate for Senator Barack Obama in hopes of preventing a fight at the Democratic convention.

“In recent days, there is a sense of movement and a sense of spirit,” said Mr. Lewis, a Georgia Democrat who endorsed Mrs. Clinton last fall. “Something is happening in America, and people are prepared and ready to make that great leap.”

Pair that move with Al Sharpton’s threat to march on the DNC if the Florida and Michigan delegates are seated, delegates without which it’s becoming apparent that Hillary can’t win the nomination, and you have a tectonic-scale move against her. But Tom Maguire makes a good point that Lewis’ endorsement helps Obama now more than it would have last fall.

I very much wonder whether a John Lewis endorsement of Barack would have been valuable to Obama last fall. Remember, Barack has been intent as presenting himself as something other than merely a black candidate (see the “Keep Hillary Alive” spin here); a string of early endorsements from prominent civil rights legends would have been counter-productive (although Oprah’s cross-over appeal was welcomed).

Indeed. Part of Obama’s appeal has been that he hasn’t hugged the Jesse Jacksons of the world. If he had, it would have limited his reach.

What the Lewis move adds to is the perception that momentum among the superdelegates is shifting toward Obama. Hillary is counting now on winning out the primaries starting with Texas and Ohio, seating the FL and MI delegates and keeping her hold on the majority of the superdelegates. That’s a weak strategy. Lewis’ shift says she isn’t keeping that hold now and is likely to lose more of them in a cascade effect. Not good for the Glacier’s prospects.

Update: From the comments, a reason to hold the phone? Is there campaign skulduggery afoot?

Update: The AJC says Lewis hasn’t switched.

Jones, Lewis’ spokeswoman, told the Washington Post that “it is plain there is a lot of enthusiasm for Barack Obama.” But, she said, “those things are observations,” not statements of preference. Jones told the newspaper that Lewis has left the option of changing his superdelegate support for Clinton on the table, but made no decisions.

What happened to this?

But the Clinton campaign reported having no word from Lewis on the subject, and a spokeswoman for Lewis, Brenda Jones, said the Times story and a similar one by the Associated Press, saying he was contemplating such a switch, were inaccurate. Both the Times and AP stories quoted Lewis directly after speaking with him; he was not available for comment later Thursday. The Obama campaign also said that Lewis and Obama had not talked recently about a change of heart.

“It is plain there is a lot of enthusiasm for Barack Obama,” Jones said. But, she said, “those things are observations,” not statements of preference. She said Lewis has left the option of changing his superdelegate support for Clinton on the table, but made no decisions. Still, it is clear that Lewis has had misgivings about the Clinton campaign in recent weeks, especially after the racially charged campaign in South Carolina, during which former Pres. Bill Clinton was perceived to have made racially insensitive comments.

Scary. The two pieces of legislation that have Obama’s name on them make him the poster child for Jonah Goldberg’s Liberal Facism, and we have the dems and the conservative purists joining to annoint him POTUS.

Because somehow 4 years of liberal fascism will send a good message to the GOP or something.

Like Rush says, I’ll wait until I see the legs from under the house.

Part of Obama’s appeal has been that he hasn’t hugged the Jesse Jacksons of the world. If he had, it would have limited his reach.

Spot on. I personally like the fact that Obama has avoided the Superstars of Race-Baiting and Poverty-Pimping. It was a smart stategic move.

It’s comforting that Jackson, Sharpton, and the others wasted hours sitting by the phone waiting for Obama to call and make an appointment to kneel at their feet and kiss the sacred ring. Obama got to this point without their help or endorsement.

I like Obama personally. I don’t like Obama politically. I absolutely love the fact he put his thumb in the collective race-baiting eyes of the poverty-pimps. Good for him.

Yep that’s the theory. A funny thing will probably happen on the way to the lesson being learned….the United States will be in ruins. Economically is a given. And probably also chaos from the devastation after being weakened militarily to the point of being a lap dog to Russia, China, Iran, the UN, and those other animals….terrorists. The other problem will be that Bush and Republicans will be blamed by the left and they will get away with it.

I’ve said it before, if Obama gets in the United States of America will no longer exist as we know it. This will be a socialist country being torn to pieces by illegals, islam, and economic collapse. The greatest country the world has ever known will just be a section in the history books. 230+ years flushed down the toilet.

Nah. This place is too good to ruin. Backlash will be powerful and rejuvenating.

libhater on February 15, 2008 at 10:02 AM

Let’s not get too dramatic here. We still have checks and balances in this country, albeit those seem to be invisible these days. However, one socialist, or even communist in office won’t cause the collapse of the country–not all at once at least. We still have some checks on executive power, unlike other nations. It would take a lot longer than four years to change us into socialists.

I’m not saying I support taking even one step down that road, because I’m not. I hope socialism is defeated wherever it pops up in the States.

On the other hand, I fear we’ve taken that first step toward socialism already.

p40tiger on February 15, 2008 at 10:09 AM

Don’t fret.

Obama and the Democrats will so impair intelligence that another attack will occur and Republicans will own the country for a hundred years.

drjohn on February 15, 2008 at 10:10 AM

This is a no brainer. Unless you believe the Clintons were the first black president.

Valiant on February 15, 2008 at 10:10 AM

If true, this is certainly a more telling and bigger endorsement than those of Lincoln Chafee and other political has beens!

My prediction is that the minute it becomes clear Clinton is vulnerable and apt to lose there will be a torrent of defections in the name of unity (and also to stick it to the Clintons). How unlike the GOP where the presumed winner is still telling the vast majority to “f*ck off” if they don’t agree with his left-of-center ideology.

highhopes on February 15, 2008 at 10:12 AM

These are words I thought would nevercome out of my mouth but I agree with Sharpton on this one.

Hillary is counting now on winning out the primaries starting with Texas and Ohio, seating the FL and MI delegates and keeping her hold on the majority of the superdelegates Satan.

fogw on February 15, 2008 at 10:26 AM

Support, only skin deep…

Wouldn’t Black super delegates switching to Obama, finally make him the “Black” candidate.

Democrat supporters in the city have an interesting demographic situation, rich liberals that can afford the high rent/property values and the poor that live in run down sections. Obama has been able to galvazize support but if it comes down to the wire how could it not be polarizing?

Should be interesting.

fogw on February 15, 2008 at 10:26 AM

I guess she’s out of luck considering that Satan just sewed up the GOP nomination.

Seriously though, the Clintons are bad losers. It’s going to be very ugly very quickly if Obama keeps up the momentum and wins Ohio and/or Texas.

“It would take a lot longer than four years to change us into socialists.”

p40tiger on February 15, 2008 at 10:09 AM

You’re right, it took about eighty years. And we’re already there. It’s just a matter cleaning up the opposition at this point.

If you look at budgetary and regulatory trends in federal, state, county, and municipal govts, we are exponentially investing in socialism.

Individualism be damned; socialism full steam ahead. We are, definitely, NOT headed toward a more economically free society.

It’s not a Thompson vs. Lieberman race. It’s not even Hillary vs. Romney. It’s looking like McCain vs Obama! Witness, in real time, the great political center shifting ever leftward like a tectonic plate.

We are losing the war of ideology. They are gaining momentum now that K-16 has been successfully turned into reeducation camps.

What comes after this?

funky chicken on February 15, 2008 at 9:47 AM

Yup. Because four years of a RINO might mean no country to defend at all with “conservatives” thinking they actually want what he pushes. At least a straight out cook liberal like Obama or even to a lesser degree Hillary (Loved Jonah Goldberg’s Liberal Facism by the way), will make those who truly love America wake up smell what is happening under their noses a bit quicker. There really is no difference between all three of them…just the degree of poison (keep in mind slow doses of poison over a long period of time tend to kill you, because antidotes don’t work as good).

Except it isn’t one socialist, it’s one socialist with a majority socialist in Congress and with the Supreme Court at the tipping point. With the majority they have in Congress now, let alone a wider one after the election, and one or two new liberal justices and they will be able to do anything they want.

I have never understood the concept of accepting a tactical defeat. We should be trying to get the best (or at least the least worst) that we can every time, all the time. It is never better to throw it all away on the hope that we’ll get something better later.

Nosferightu on February 15, 2008 at 11:15 AM

From the article:

“I’ve been very impressed with the campaign of Senator Obama,” Mr. Lewis said. “He’s getting better and better every single day.”

WTF? Oh our country is so screwed up. Fred! can’t even get lift off and this Milli Vinilli is the second coming.

But, would we be better off fighting this fight in Congress, and let Obama be the poster boy for the problem?

I think that the “moderates”, or rather, the voting apolitical, do not understand the distinction between McCain the “image” and McCain the “reality”.

President Barak Obama

ThePrez on February 15, 2008 at 3:41 PM

This whole thing is a mess of “battling identities”. First we have the NAACP and that misrepresentation, now this whole “misunderstanding” with Mr. Lewis- wtf?

Is anybody getting the idea that these individuals feel, I dunno, “threatened” in their seats should they support anyone other than Obama in their home districts?

It’s as if this odd method has become “Pronounce you’re changing your vote to protect your bottom, then go back and cling to your original point of view, safer in the knowledge that you’re “considering” changing your mind.

Doesn’t pass the smell test, something’s up.
