Video: “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” trailer

Old footage + new footage that looks like old footage = crazy delicious. At a glance this appears to be a recycling of “Last Crusade,” which was itself a recycling of “Raiders” — except, did I catch some sort of chase scene with natives tucked in near the end here? Add a dollop of “Temple of Doom” too, then. They’re moving the same chess pieces around the board, but since this is after all a take-off on those old swashbuckling serials, it really can’t be any other way.

Very cool.

amerpundit on February 14, 2008 at 1:20 PM

were those US troops Indy was fighting? Not cool Spielburg.

GREENTURTLE on February 14, 2008 at 1:21 PM

I can’t wait. Rarely do I even go to the cinema unless it’s a big movie like LOTR or Star Wars. I can’t wait to see this in the theatre.

Geronimo on February 14, 2008 at 1:21 PM

Nothing like a nice 2 hour escape.

Now - if they can just keep politics out of it and let us enjoy the damn movie.

jake-the-goose on February 14, 2008 at 1:22 PM

It looks great….I hope it is. I also thought Episode one LOOKED great in Starwars but that sucked.

spacekicker on February 14, 2008 at 1:23 PM

I’m actually already biting my knuckle in anticipation. Since the first time I watched Raiders of the Lost Ark (on Lazerdisc!) I’ve loved the Indiana Jones series, and I can’t wait for the newest installment.

Spc Steve on February 14, 2008 at 1:25 PM

were those US troops Indy was fighting? Not cool Spielburg.

GREENTURTLE on February 14, 2008 at 1:21 PM

Nope. According to Wikipedia, it’s set in 1957 and he’s battling agents of the Soviet Union.

amerpundit on February 14, 2008 at 1:25 PM

new fx technologies, great director, dense story line (well maybe not so complicated) and Indy — wasn’t not to like. a real blockbuster. thanks for the peek.

A good old slice of American pie! Just what this country needs! I am there!

GREENTURTLE on February 14, 2008 at 1:21 PM

Not if Cate Blanchett was their leader. I’ve heard she’s playing some kid of Soviet spy in the movie. Maybe the Rooskies get into area 51 somehow?

Slublog on February 14, 2008 at 1:28 PM

Oh goody! We only had to wait twenty years for this one. Thanks Indy.

greasywrench on February 14, 2008 at 1:29 PM

Not if Cate Blanchett was their leader. I’ve heard she’s playing some kid of Soviet spy in the movie.

Slublog on February 14, 2008 at 1:28 PM

Yep. Wikipedia:

Producer Frank Marshall has confirmed that the film is set in 1957, making it nineteen years since Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, thus acknowledging the real-life passing of years between films. Indiana Jones is having a quiet life teaching before being thrust back into his old adventuring. He battles agents of the Soviet Union for the crystal skull. “The theory is they are shaped by higher powers or alien powers or came from another world, or an ancient Mayan civilization had the powers,” Marshall explained. Indy’s journey takes him across New Mexico, Connecticut, Mexico City, and the jungles of Peru, as well as the warehouse from the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark, where numerous treasures including the Ark of the Covenant are kept safe by the US government.[4] There will be some humor regarding Indiana’s age.

amerpundit on February 14, 2008 at 1:30 PM

I am so totally there!

Is it just me or did I see the guy who played Young Indiana Jones in the TV series (which I love, btw)?

Pulchritudinous Patriot on February 14, 2008 at 1:30 PM

There will be some humor regarding Indiana’s age.

No, really?

I mean, seriously?

Wow, what a bold choice!

/snark

I’m going to see the movie, of course. I mean, duh.

Merovign on February 14, 2008 at 1:32 PM

I gotta figure Indy has tenure at that college he teaches at by now…

Always Right on February 14, 2008 at 1:32 PM

Roswell? The warehouse where the Ark is stored?

Hm.

I’m hoping Lucas can do another “Crusade” and not another “Temple of Doom.” Or, at least not litter this flick with a lot of inconsistencies.

Guarded anticipation.

At least Hayden Christianson isn’t in it.

Pulchritudinous Patriot on February 14, 2008 at 1:36 PM

“Raiders” came out when I was in HS…this has me downright giddy with excitement. And Ford still has the chops. Can’t wait!

Malpaso on February 14, 2008 at 1:36 PM

I am not that wound up about it.

Weebork on February 14, 2008 at 1:38 PM

Indy vs. the Commies. Sweet. Stunts, fist-fights and one-liners, the formula never gets old. A double-dose of movie nostalgia: nostalgia for Hollywood Golden Age serial cliff-hangers and nostalgia for the first time you heard that soundtrack and heard that whip crack.

I remember like yesterday seeing Raiders in the theater on vacation with my dad. No one knew what to expect in the days before relentless media hype. We had zero expectations. Lucas and Spielberg weren’t Hollywood demi-gods and Harrison Ford was just ‘that guy who played Han Solo.’ No multi-culturalism and no PC. Indy shot that big Arab with the cutlass straight in the chest and the audience roared with laughter. No lectures, no message, no Big Ideas, no digital effects and no pretentious film-school crap. Just solid escapist entertainment. It’s still my favorite film.

Please Spielberg, Lucas and Ford, please, please, please don’t screw this up.

As Chris Matthews would say; that trailer sent a tingle up my leg.

My favorite part was the shot of the Stars and Stripes. A reminder of who Indiana Jones is.

CurtZHP on February 14, 2008 at 1:46 PM

I have this bad feeling that Indy’s fighting the US Army in this film. I sure hope I’m wrong.

Man crush

But in a non-sexual way.
It’s all good.

natesnake on February 14, 2008 at 1:51 PM

Going to be superb. A nice journey back to my childhood. Very little is better on the Big Screen than Indiana Jones.

Krydor on February 14, 2008 at 1:52 PM

I have this bad feeling that Indy’s fighting the US Army in this film. I sure hope I’m wrong.

It smelled of ‘Indy meets X-Files’, so he may only be battling corrupted guards of area 51. New World Order stuff.

I dunno. Whatever. Looks like a trip.

I’m sure Bill O’Reilly will see the seditious angle.

LimeyGeek on February 14, 2008 at 1:52 PM

Yeah, it looks like the US Army roughs him up in this trailer… this is gonna suck. I know George Lucas is an insufferable anti-Bush nut, and I seem to recall Harrison Ford saying some idiotic things.

dave_lantos on February 14, 2008 at 1:53 PM

I predict it to be an over-rated one-liner duel between Indy and that annoying kid from Transformers. I’ll wait for the DVD rental.

regal on February 14, 2008 at 1:58 PM

I’m so excited about this coming out. I can’t wait to see it!

StephC on February 14, 2008 at 1:58 PM

Yeah, it looks like the US Army roughs him up in this trailer… this is gonna suck

Of course. Portraying the US military as anything other than angels that fart rainbows is unequivocal evidence of treachery.

Line them all up against the wall. Hollywood traitors.

LimeyGeek on February 14, 2008 at 1:59 PM

I think its russians, not the US that beat him up. The soldiers were their to help him up when he grabbed the hat.
I am looking forward to this, and Since May 2 is Iron man, I get 2 good movies. (Specially since Iron man blasts and flame throwers a few Mujahdeen early on in the movie)

Wyrd on February 14, 2008 at 2:00 PM

Hi LimeyGeek,
The phrase “straw man argument” was created precisely because obnoxious infantile twits like yourself unfortunately exist. As much as you desperately wish for someone to, no one’s calling anyone a traitor. Stop begging for someone to oppress you so you can fulfill your burning desire to “stick it to ‘em”, and get a life.

dave_lantos on February 14, 2008 at 2:05 PM

Don’t need to watch the trailer. It’s Indy, I’m there.

bojack on February 14, 2008 at 2:11 PM

Hi Wyrd,
I’m not sure that’s true… I watched the HD version, and it’s pretty clear that the US Army is bullying Indy around. Because we just don’t have enough films that portray the US Army in a negative light.

dave_lantos on February 14, 2008 at 2:11 PM

dave_lantos on February 14, 2008 at 2:05 PM

Rrrright. Nobody on here is remotely likely to consider negative portrayal of the US military as a woeful betrayal and shameful blight on Old Glory.

Never happens.

PS. Life already gotten, thanks ;)

LimeyGeek on February 14, 2008 at 2:13 PM

The only way this will be any good is if Lucas was kept as far away from it as possible.

WasatchMan on February 14, 2008 at 2:15 PM

If the Russians are on American soil looking for stuff, I wonder if they aren’t masquerading as American soldiers.

Darksean on February 14, 2008 at 2:18 PM

I’m getting my girl geek on for this one. I grew up on Indiana Jones movies, and when the set came out on DVD THAT was the one I wanted desperately to get that year for Christmas (my father came close — he got me a gift card to Best Buy for the amount of the set just in case someone else got it for me).

Hubby IS going to take me to this one. He is not denying me this time, even if we have to take his kids and I have to show them all the movies for background before going.

ScoopPC11 on February 14, 2008 at 2:20 PM

The American Flag was a real turn off. Post War, I would think that Indy would work for some UN commission on preservation of third world cultures.

tommylotto on February 14, 2008 at 2:23 PM

Indy vs. the commies? The wifey and I’ll be there. This’ll be the first movie we’ve seen since 300.

“Commies. I hate these guys.”

Tony737 on February 14, 2008 at 2:25 PM

LimeyGeek, this is almost like the opposite of fishing for compliments… it’s fishing for oppression. “Oppress me, please!! So I can lash out and show everyone how victimized I am!”. You’re like that tazered kid or Dennis the peasant from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

DENNIS:
I mean, if I went ’round saying I was an emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they’d put me away!
ARTHUR:
Shut up, will you? Shut up!
DENNIS:
Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system.
ARTHUR:
Shut up!
DENNIS:
Oh! Come and see the violence inherent in the system! Help! Help! I’m being repressed!
ARTHUR:
Bloody peasant!
DENNIS:
Oh, what a give-away. Did you hear that? Did you hear that, eh? That’s what I’m on about. Did you see him repressing me? You saw it, didn’t you?

“I’m getting too old for this sh!t.”

Tony737 on February 14, 2008 at 2:31 PM

Ah well Lantos,
Probably just my wish full thinking.

Limey, sorry to burst your bubble but The US Milatary is made up of individuals. As such each person may not behave as honorably as we would like. As a whole though, the US Milatary performs far more honorably and professionally then any other milatary in the world, and is probaly made up of the best this nation has to offer.
With that said, I am proud to have American troops defending me, as opposed to the UN blue hats, Iran guard, Brittish, Finnish, Irish or any other troops.
Aren’t you glad you live in a cuntry where such great men and women support and defend your right to speak your opinions?

Wyrd on February 14, 2008 at 2:33 PM

Aren’t you glad you live in a cuntry where such great men and women support and defend your right to speak your opinions?

(a) Freudian slip?
(b) I have been terribly misunderstood. I love the military. I was just ‘heading off at the pass’ the usual grumblings that tend to occur around here every time a movie comes out that fails to portray any particular aspect of America (not just the military) as barrel-chested true-blue heroes of the world.

LimeyGeek on February 14, 2008 at 2:36 PM

Tony737 on February 14, 2008 at 2:37 PM

Hey Wyrd,
I hope you’re right… I hope the US Army is portrayed as the good guys… but I prefer to be a pessimist in this case… that way, if the film surprises me, it’ll only be a good surprise. :D I’m a huge Indy fan, so it really annoys me to temper my excitement.

dave_lantos on February 14, 2008 at 2:40 PM

My sci fi geekiness is showing, but the crystal skull thing reminds me of one of the earlier episodes of SG-1, where they find a crystal skull in some Mayan ruin and it’s a dimensional gateway (or something). It makes me a little disapointed already.

On the other hand, I’ve been in love with Indiana Jones since I was a little girl, and I have to say: it’s about gosh-darn time! : )

Beh, there are only two movies I’m excited about seeing:
“You Don’t Mess With The Zohan” and “Prince Caspian”.

I’ll see this one in the theater only if I’m bored and everything else in the general area has stopped working for some reason. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Indiana Jones movies, I just don’t care about seeing this sequel.

I think they both used this because I think there is some mythology around it.

Remember, Raiders of the lost Arc wasn’t the first movie to use The Ark of the Covenant, just ask Charlton Heston. Jurassic Park was King Kong meets The Valley of the Gwangi. Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure was Dr Who for Californians; I mean time traveling phonebooth and all! Ok, I’m done now.

US soldiers are the new Nazis?

That trailer certainly appears that way.

Second look at an Indy boycott.

Nessuno on February 14, 2008 at 3:36 PM

I wonder if there is any way to find out for sure.

I know Cate’s character is a Russian, and she appears to be directing them. So, perhaps either they are Russians in disguise, or they have been fooled by an imposter commander.

Darksean on February 14, 2008 at 3:47 PM

Psuedo:

Jumping to conclusions here and rushing to judgement based on a teaser? Indy is chasing Kate Blanchett who plays the Soviet “heavy” in the film during the warehouse scene. It looks like the same warehouse that is home the “Ark” of the first film. Maybe they are Soviets masquerading as US soldiers? I’m just sayin’….

Malpaso on February 14, 2008 at 3:56 PM

The trailer’s new scenes begin with a nice shot of the camera panning over an American flag… then, having seen the scenes of American soldiers bullying Indy around, I realized that older Indy movies have very similar scenes of the camera panning over a Nazi flag… then I started to get concerned that they were messing with us. Man, if they politicize Indy… ugh…

dave_lantos on February 14, 2008 at 3:59 PM

Raiders…well what can I say but “I loved it!”
Temple of Doom….SUCKED BIG TIME!!!!
Last Crusade… loved it!

I only hope this one is as good as Raiders :)

Confederate on February 14, 2008 at 4:10 PM

Nope.

MarkJudge on February 14, 2008 at 4:28 PM

Some of you guys need to relax. We know very little about the plot. There are many plot reason why people who appear to be wearing US uniforms get blown up or beat up Indy. I bet you can think of a dozen off the top of your head.

- They’re Russian spies disguised as US soldiers
- Indy is trying to steal some McGuffin from a US base and soldiers legitimately rough him up.
- The US soldiers are being blown up by, I don’t know, the bad guys?

Remember, Raiders and Crusade when Indy wore a Nazi uniform? Was that pro-Nazi? Of course not. It’s Indiana Jones. It’s an action flick. People wear diguises.

As for Lucas, he may be an anti-Bush moonbat but according to Vanity Fair he’s been carrying around this script for many years, from before Bush got into office. While there may be some dialogue that jabs W or Iraq, I doubt the structure of the plot was revised to accommidate an anti-Bush line.

Vote Sauron 08 on February 14, 2008 at 4:30 PM

I think you guys are getting too worked up about the perceived Indy vs. U.S. Army thing. It looks to me like he’s trying to get into the same super-secret government warehouse where the Ark is stored. Wouldn’t the soldiers guarding the place try to stop him?

Mike Antonucci on February 14, 2008 at 4:33 PM

OMG, Bill and Ted WAS Dr. Who for hippies.
My God it’s all coming together now!

Bladerunner1701 on February 14, 2008 at 4:34 PM

Speaking of 1950s “commies”, how about bets on whether there is an “evil” Joe McCarthy-like character, and a HUAC-like committee to mess with Indy. I mean “Tailgunner Joe” is probably Hollywood’s favorite 1950s villain.

MikeHu on February 14, 2008 at 4:37 PM

Cate Blanchett’s character is a Soviet agent, and since none of the guys in US Army uniforms are after her, I think it more likely that they’re infiltrators of some kind, rather than Indy fighting the Army. Besides, if they’re “Area 51″ guards, shouldn’t they be Air Force? Naw, they’re bad guys in disguise, is all.

Frozen Tex on February 14, 2008 at 4:38 PM

Mazz, nuttin’, I was just laughin’ at your ‘don’t break a hip’ comment. :-)

Tony737 on February 14, 2008 at 4:39 PM

Indy is trying to stop the soviet spy from getting something out of that warehouse from the first movie.

SO yes, it is guarded by US Army guys. Some may get punched in the face. THere is no chance you’ll see them portrayed as bad guys.

I’m active duty, US army, and I aprove of this trailer! I’ll be watching it when it comes out in the sandbox (deploying next week).

spec_ops_mateo on February 14, 2008 at 4:40 PM

I could be wrong, but based on the people I know, the kind of person who likes Indiana Jones is also the kind of person who eats red meat, owns guns, and supports the military. So if they made the Army look bad (which I don’t see happening), it’d be a huge misstep - it would eliminate a big fanbase.

As for anti-communism, I’m hoping and praying they don’t portray it as exaggerated - but looks like its some sort of Soviet infiltration into the Army, which would suggest the opposite.

Viva McCarthy!

Did people watch a different trailer than I just did? Or perhaps it’s that some of us recognize US military uniforms when we see them. Look a little closer, people. Just because they’re wearing green and have guns doesn’t mean they’re ours.

baldilocks on February 14, 2008 at 7:02 PM

Anti-American? Did you guys watch the same trailer I did? Watch it again. Yes, that’s it, at the verrrryyy end. David Koepp wrote the screenplay!

Good action writer with a great moral sense that goes well w/ his excellent sense of humor, so I seriously, seriously doubt that the movie will be anti-American. You know: Jurassic Park? Spider-Man 1, and 2 + 3 or just 2 or whatever? Panic Room? He wrote them all. This movie’ll be OK. BECAUSE OF THE KOEPP!

Just because they’re wearing green and have guns doesn’t mean they’re ours.

baldilocks on February 14, 2008 at 7:02 PM

Zactly. Now for the important stuff:

Indy’s too old to be in this movie. Too long between films, too many old jokes, too many….WHAAA??? Karen Allen’s back in this one?! Oh man I am so gonna see this one! That spunky chick made Raiders part 1 perfect. Kewl!

inviolet on February 14, 2008 at 8:13 PM

I had some concerns about the portrayal of the US soldiers as well but if you take a close look Indy is being pulled out of the trunk of the car.
Clearly a “spy” thing to do and he got caught, so the treatment by the soldiers.
Also Blanchett’s (sp?) character does appear to be directing the soldiers after Indy. Indeed she could be a Soviet mole.

Oh, and did anyone notice near the end between the “I thought you were a teacher” and “part-time” lines that Indy is beating the bejeezus out of a “Russkie?©”

Yahoo!

Bring on the ass-kicking!

Looks like good fun. I’ll be off to enjoy it whilst anyone else is free to sit here and complain that maybe there’s some analogy to America being evil or something

On a more serious..ish.. note, it sure did feel.. weird.. to hear ‘that’ music again being played in a trailer. Didn’t think it’d have that effect on me..

Or perhaps it’s that some of us recognize US military uniforms when we see them. Look a little closer, people. Just because they’re wearing green and have guns doesn’t mean they’re ours.

With all respect, you are wrong. Watch the hi-def trailer closely and get back to me. Guys in US Army uniforms are clearly bullying Indy around. Now, those uniforms may be disguises, who knows.
