Breaking: Romney to endorse McCain; Update: Romney for VP? Update: Mitt to “release” delegates?

3:30 p.m. in … Boston. Will Maverick be there? Stand by while I look for his schedule.
Look on the bright side, Mittheads. This way he gets to flip the bird to Huckabee before Huck drops out.
Update: McCain’s in Rhode Island and Vermont today so yeah, surely he’ll be detouring to Massachusetts.
Belated exit question: Would the chosen one really endorse Maverick?
Update: Halperin says Mitt will ask his delegates to vote for McCain at the convention. Assuming they do, that leave McCain with 1,113 delegates — 827 of his own plus Romney’s 286. Only 1,191 are needed to clinch.
Update: The only primary between now and Texas/Ohio is next Tuesday in Wisconsin, where 40 delegates are at stake. So unless Huck gets out, the formal clinch will have to wait until March 4.
Update: Memory lane.
Update: My Man Mitt says the Foxies are talking about Mitt as the favorite for VP now. Er, no.
Update: Can Mitt pledge his delegates to McCain or is he reduced to simply asking them to support him? Depends on whether they’re bound or not, which varies by state. Per NBC, most but not all of Mitt’s delegates do appear to be bound; if he says he’s “releasing” them to McCain, that means Maverick can bank them.

It will be interesting to hear what Romney will say as his endorsement.
(Holds monocle to eye) Varrrrrryyyyy Eeeenteresting.

MCCAIN ‘08!
Because you like your liberals to hide under a Republican flag.

Who now?
Vizzini on February 14, 2008 at 1:40 PM
I am surprised that a man who given no help from the party establishment is so eager to help save the party.
I am sure McCain does not deserve Romney’s support.
EJDolbow on February 14, 2008 at 1:41 PM
Romney. By endorsing McCain, he’s showing that he’s more interested in power than he is in true conservative principles.
Big S on February 14, 2008 at 1:42 PM
A quick addition of McCain and Romney delegates gives McCain 1,113 delegates.

How do you get conservative principles INSIDE the party but by having conservative voices INSIDE the party?
EJDolbow on February 14, 2008 at 1:43 PM
Unsurprising. Inevitable really. What else is he gonna do? Sit on his hands?

second look: disowning Mitt?

I don’t think we can say Mitt is selling out. We should wait until he gives his endorsement rationale.
Weebork on February 14, 2008 at 1:45 PM
After thoughtful evaluation, I find McCain only 75% objectionable, whereas Hillary ad Obama are 99% objectionable, so for the good of the country, I too, “endorse” [gulp] McCain.
Hil and Ob have many horrible things planned for the country that will be next to impossible to reverse 4 years from now…we better get McCain in office to stem the tide of socialism.
Don’t people get how truly fragile freedom is?
JustTruth101 on February 14, 2008 at 1:45 PM
yep, good point
JustTruth101 on February 14, 2008 at 1:46 PM
That right there is worth suffering through Mitt endorsing McCain. Anything that draws to a close the campaign of Huckabee is wonderful.
EJDolbow on February 14, 2008 at 1:46 PM
So any conservative who endorses or votes for John McCain has no principles? Do I have to point out the long list of rock solid conservatives who have endorsed him already.
Complete7 on February 14, 2008 at 1:47 PM
By endorsing McCain, isn’t he signaling his willingness to compromise not only on issues like immigration, but also his willingness to embrace someone who has repeatedly stabbed conservatives in the back? Why not just keep his mouth shut and and refuse to endorse the RINO McCain, unless he’s willing to compromise his principles for power?
Big S on February 14, 2008 at 1:48 PM
Why are these default endorsements such a big deal to everybody?
People tried to make a big deal out of Fred’s endorsement of McCain, but Fred waited until McCain had all but clinched, which just says to me he was going to endorse whoever came out on top.
Mitt was the 2nd to last man standing (I don’t really consider Huck or Paul, since neither has a chance), now he’s endorsing the last man standing. Is it really that big of a deal?
Was Reagan a RINO for endorsing Ford in ‘76?
thirteen28 on February 14, 2008 at 1:49 PM
I predict he’ll focus his endorsement on McCain’s foreign policy. He’ll slam the Dems while praising McCain. His CPAC speech was a preview. He pretty much said then that he did not want to see the growth of Al Qaida again under a Dem president. He’ll focus everything on how McCain will supposably take the fight to Al Qaida even though he won’t.
And the Huckster deserves it. Mitt is a far better man the the Huckster could ever dream of being.

Done…and it gets McCain to the WH.

voiceofreason on February 14, 2008 at 1:51 PM
How is this a surprise?
He ’suspended’ his run last week, in GOP land that means that he is out of the race and freeing up the votes he had locked down up to that point.
Given the people left in the race, McCain / Huck / Hill / Obama who else would he suggest his support go to? Huck might have had a shot at it if he was not such a bigot, lying P.O.S. Ok, he never had a shot at it. That only leaves McCain as the other two are Democrats. Pretty much not a surprise.
Mitt knows that the GOP will not win the POTUS this year with either of the two still left in the race. No reason to “take his ball and go home”, but yet that is what people seem to be attacking him for not doing.
Obama will win, we will have a depression, Romney will be back in 2012 to fix the mess the economy and budget then.
Voidseeker on February 14, 2008 at 1:51 PM
Yes it is. This will actually be helpful for McCain because it will push the uneasy Conservative Republican base that came to support Romney at the end into McCain’s corner. It is very valuable to McCamnesty. Won’t make a difference for me but it will for many others.
Zetterson on February 14, 2008 at 1:53 PM
It’s called “rallying the troops”, folks.
Since Mitt is a business man by trade, I hope he made a good “deal”.
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on February 14, 2008 at 1:53 PM
as someone who likes Mitt and can barely stand McCain, I say good for Mitt.
I’ll probably jump on board too if Barry is the Dem nominee.
locke on February 14, 2008 at 1:54 PM
I’m more interested in hearing how Romney is going to endorse McCain than the actual endorsement.
I’m sure the foreign policy aspect will be part of it, as you say. It will also be aimed at the Democrats too, as we suspect. But I wonder what else he will inject in there. Will it be a Reagan-esk motivational speech for the country and not merely a simple endorsement for the presumptive nominee?
In a few hours, we’ll know.
Weebork on February 14, 2008 at 1:54 PM
Mitt finally got to bitch slap Huck!!
Huckabee was absolutely disgusting towards Romney during the campaign and I am so pleased Mitt gets to spare us much more Huck-a-campaigning.
EJDolbow on February 14, 2008 at 1:54 PM
That explains why he’s doing it. Goodbye, Huckabee.
Slublog on February 14, 2008 at 1:54 PM
Romney’s a Republican, he had to do that to play nice in the sandbox. But there may be other conservatives besides Romney to consider for 2012.
davecatbone on February 14, 2008 at 1:55 PM
Winner of most upbeat comment of the day!!
Zetterson on February 14, 2008 at 1:55 PM
No surprise, really.
Still, I eagerly wait to see if our resident Romniacs will spin or cry in anguish.
Does this mean that Romney will formally drop out instead of just suspending his campaign? The result would be that his delegates become uncommitted, and certainly enough would go to McCain at the convention to prevent the possibility of a brokered convention even if he didn’t have 1191 by then.
Suck it, Huckster and Paul.
Hollowpoint on February 14, 2008 at 1:55 PM
I just don’t see that happening. Romney simply sees the utter importance of backing McCain. I only wish many conservative voters would see it.
JetBoy on February 14, 2008 at 1:56 PM
I’m with Mitt! But I won’t vote for McCain.
He’s going to screw us on immigration, claiming “God’s children” again.
What does he have to say about the estimated 2,500 to 3,000 American citizens killed each year by illegal aliens? Aren’t they “God’s children” too?

I’m guessing Fred will give his delegates to McCain as well, so that’ll put him pretty close, I’m guessing.

What else can Mitt do?
Jim-Rose on February 14, 2008 at 1:57 PM
I have new respect for Mitt. To me, this means that he puts the interests of the United States above and beyond his personal interests. Mitt is a Mensch. G_d Bless Him.
Now we need to focus on getting the truth out about Obama and his anti-American values
georgealbert on February 14, 2008 at 1:58 PM
Ummm….maybe he just wants America to win the war on terror.
Tim on February 14, 2008 at 1:59 PM
That’s a crazy statement. Huckabee is married to the same wife he’s always been married to and his kids like him. Your rationale that Mitt is a ‘far better man’ stems from what? His uncanny ability to tell people whatever they want to hear and pay people to bash his competition? You only think he is a ‘better man’ because he has more money. I can’t think of a reason you might think Huckabee is a ‘bad man’. Most of the comments this campaign season have really made me sad.
This country is in trouble.
ThackerAgency on February 14, 2008 at 1:59 PM
Forget about Mitt in 2012. He will not be able to overcome this.
Valiant on February 14, 2008 at 1:59 PM

passingtramp on February 14, 2008 at 1:59 PM
Could we possibly hope for a McCain/Romney ticket? It would certainly position Mitt for Prez in 2012 since McCain has says he’s a one term Prez.
kcd on February 14, 2008 at 2:00 PM
Nonsense- he had a long list of party establishment types behind him.
If he’s to have any future in the Republican party, he’s going to have to play ball with them come election time. I don’t blame him for it, but that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy some Mitten anguish over the endorsement.
Hollowpoint on February 14, 2008 at 2:00 PM
We have no loyalties to a guy who has gleefully stabbed us in the back for over a decade…if McCain wants our support, he’ll make some compromises with *gasp* actual conservatives for once in his life.
doubleplusundead on February 14, 2008 at 2:00 PM
Maverick IS the Chosen One, don’t you see? I bet they met with Romney to persuade him to endorse the McShamnesty. This is just another example of the establishment stabbing conservatives in the back.
Big S on February 14, 2008 at 2:01 PM
Speaking of that “Memory Lane” video above, I still have no idea what Sen McCain was referring to in his “joke”. Anybody have any clue? Maybe I’m just that dense.
Weebork on February 14, 2008 at 2:01 PM
I hear what you’re saying, but it’s not really what I was gettting at. It’s basically just a party-unity endorsement, so some people will be persuaded by Mitt’s setting an example and being gracious in defeat. But it still doesn’t mean Mitt or any other of the previous candidates to endorse McCain are really selling out any more than Fred, Rudy, or numerous others (e.g., Cornyn) who have fundamental disagreements with him.
Mitt’s basically endorsing McCain because:
1) McCain has basically won the nomination,
2) Party unity, and
3) To thumb his nose at Huckabee.
No more than that should be read into it.
thirteen28 on February 14, 2008 at 2:01 PM
I am almost 100% certain that if you look it up “Suspend” in GOP primaries does not mean what you think it means.
It means the person is dropping out of the race, AND that they are freeing up any votes they had won up to that point to be given to someone else. If he just dropped out any votes he had won up to that point would be frozen, unable to change to a different candidate. That is my understanding of it, unless things have changed recently.
Voidseeker on February 14, 2008 at 2:02 PM
If I were Maverick, I would walk out on stage with him like everything was normal then say ” No thanks, Mitt, Your a phony and there is no room for phonies in the republican party. Go buy yourself something nice. You’ll feel better.”

Do you know why Tom Tancredo ran for President? It was not to BE POTUS, it was to make sure the real candidates talk about immigration.
If Mitt can get “inside the party” he can have influence on it.
EJDolbow on February 14, 2008 at 2:04 PM
I wonder how Tancredo feels about his endorsement of Romney now that all those delegates are going to help McCain open the border.
Stick to your core values and you’ll sleep at night.
Valiant on February 14, 2008 at 2:04 PM
Same for Mitt. And your point is?
thirteen28 on February 14, 2008 at 2:05 PM
Basically this is the ultimate “Hey Huck McCain doesn’t need your stinking delegates when mine easily push his over the top of your bigoted campaign” slap.
Before it was a McCain-Huck tag team where Huck was kissing McCain’s rear in order to band together to defeat Romney. When Romney dropped out and suspended his campaign, Huck got greedy and went on his quixotic quest for power, the only reason he’s even in this still.
If McCain does so much as pick up 80 delegates, but somehow doesn’t clinch the nomination under his own power, Mitt gets to be kingmaker.
Advantage Romney.

If this means that McPain picks Mitt for VP, I will be ‘ok’ with it…I might even be able to fill in that bubble.
The Congress will have to sprout stones OR new Congress members to counter-act a McPain administration. If that’s what needs to happen to turn this country around, so be it.
We need to have a long, in-depth interview with Calderon, our current co-prez. He will verify that those Security and Prosperity Summits were and will be for the s-l-o-w creation of the NAFTA Superhighway and the destruction of our language, borders and culture…not that they aren’t already half-way down the toilet.
Christine on February 14, 2008 at 2:07 PM
This argument of wait until 2008 and we will win the congress so we will not vote, how did that work out. Same argument now, I won’t vote for McCain I’ll wait until 2012.
KBird on February 14, 2008 at 2:07 PM
Yes, that would really be a classy move, slap Mitt’s hand away when he reaches out to McCain in the interests of party unity.
But given how some McCain supporters act these days, it’s not the least bit surprising that you thought of that.

Complete Bull, tell me how Tom Coburn is not a rock solid conservative. I dare you to prove it to me. He has supported McCain since last summer. Coburn has one of the most conservative records in the senate and hasn’t wavered on anything. I could go on with other conservatives who have supported McCain. Your empty rhetoric means nothing. A lot of conservatives care about winning the war on terror, putting conservative judges on the bench and keeping taxes low; all things that McCain would be a lot better then any democrat. You are the one who needs to check your principles if you vote for clinton/obama or sit out.
Complete7 on February 14, 2008 at 2:09 PM
I hope he made some kind of deal with John-the-Jerk.
Actually, this was pretty smart. Follow me:
1- McCain is going to lose in Nove. – that’s a fact, Mac.
2- This forces Huck OUT before Huck places 2nd in the race (which is really what his continued run is all about – he knows he can’t win and he knows it won’t be a brokered convention).
3- The RNC has ALWAYS (since the 1930’s, I think) chosen the person who came in 2nd in the primary to be the nominee in the following election….
That means ROMNEY will be their man in 2012.
stenwin77 on February 14, 2008 at 2:10 PM

Makes no sense for Mitt to do this. If McCain succeeds and wins the presidency Mitt isnt a good choice to bring anyone else in.
For mitt it would end any good chance to run in 2012 if McCain loses.
Besides is still the mitt hatrid in many of these campaigns.
William Amos on February 14, 2008 at 2:10 PM
Mitt’s on record with his stance on illegals, free speech and the WOT. He sees his status rising within the party. Mav, on the other hand, has been pushed into a corner. Juan cannot continue down the path that he has been going in the Senate. If he did, he would get crushed by Barry “Empty” Obama. So Mav must change (flip is a better term) to win the general.
Mitt is a businessman. Do you think he would risk all of the capital he has gained within the Repub party if there was not going to be some sort of payoff in the end?

I have to assume you have not been paying attention.
Huckabee ran the sleaziest campaign out of all the candidates. He played off his attacks with an act of ignorance or false humility. He is a bigot and fanned up the flames of anti-Mormonism that exists in congregations of his sect of Christianity.
There was also his constant bribing of churches to get out their congregations to vote for the “only Christian Leader” in the race.
I could go on for a long time. Huck needs to be kicked out and never heard from again. His identity politics and bigotry belong over on the Democrat side, not in the GOP.

I guess reason is beyond the McCain trolls.

He pardoned more criminals than three governors combined, several going on to kill other people. He originally said opposition to McCain’s amnesty bill was partially driven by racism. He held a press conference to announce the cancellation of a negative ad, which he proceeded to run for a room full of cameras and reporters.
That’s just a sample.

Generally the delegates of a candidate who has suspended his campaign remain that candidate’s delegates until they drop out, at which time they become uncommitted. From there, the states have a say in the matter.

Huckabee Ranks Six Among Corrupt Politicians
I already did. If you vote for McCain you put your party ahead of your principles. Conservatives should be well aware of the lip-service McCain pays to their ideas. His ACU rating has dropped consistently since the second Clinton term. If you put the GOP ahead of your own conservative beliefs then you are a Republican first, conservative second.
I am a conservative first.
Ann Coulter provided a very good explanation of why a vote for Obama is a smart move for conservatives on Cavuto. I suggest you go check that out. HotAir linked to it.

This is EXACTLY why all the Mitt in 2012 BS was so freekin stupid.
Mitt is only barley if even more conservative than McCain. And McCain is only a bit more conservative than say ehhh Bill Clinton.
It is going to be a long 4yrs in the desert guys. I am starting to wonder if maybe Kos have the answer. His plan has been bottom up (bottom creates the leaders and foundation needed for the big show). Getting up enough money and resources to push what would be a nobody over in a primary non-presidential is allot easier.
The Kos kids get their candidates in but still fail horribly because well they are freekin nuts. The Kos kids ideals are so far left that they think Hillary is border line right winger.
Conservative ideals & foundation are what the vast majority even many who call themselves Dem’s agree with
-Small Government
-De-regulation
-Self Independence
-Lower Taxes (so you can buy that heath insurance or if you rather a new toy for Johnny or even that nice new TV whatever this is America land of free YOU CHOOSE not some bueracrat that will waste $.90 cents just spending your $1.)
-America IS a good country and benefit to world
-English SHOULD be the language to glue our nation together
-We are ONE NATION of Many, not Many Nations in One place

I am as scared as the next person just thinking about a McVain presidency, but good God, America is MUCH more important than teaching a “conservative” lesson to McSnide.
Califemme on February 14, 2008 at 2:28 PM
I can’t see him taking it. mccain, hussein or hilary, the next 4 years are going to be a nightmare and Romney is poised to step in and take control. huckster is a one time phenimenon and will be long forgotten in 4 years. Romney can do any number of things to stay in the limelight, what can huckster do? Just go on TV? Romney tieing himself to mccain would be a big mistake and he’s smart enough to see that.
peacenprosperity on February 14, 2008 at 2:29 PM
Mitt craps out a McCain every morning after his breakfast. McCain can only pray that maybe someday he can have as much class as Mitt. If McCain did work out a deal with Mitt, it’s only because he knows he’ll be crushed in the General against Obama and the only move many of us would respond to is to put a conservative voice of reason on the ticket to help boost his sorry ass.
Geronimo on February 14, 2008 at 2:30 PM
LOL. One of two things will happen:
1. McCain gets enough delegates to clinch, rendering the discussion moot.
2. McCain does not get enough delegates to clinch, Huck prays to God the party will crown him because of his wins in the South, and Mitt says to McCain: “Hey John, Huck is calling on Satan to screw you out of the nomination. I can help you.”
If McCain doesn’t clinch, all the power is Romney’s. McCain’s choice is either to take Romney’s delegates with either Romney as VP (or some recommendation Romney makes), or drag out the process to the convention where Romney, pissed off by the assinine, childish actions you’d want Maverick to do would simply sit on his hands and let McCain and Huck kill each other.
Don’t kid yourself THE MCCAIN TROLL, McCain has no power to demand anything if he doesn’t clinch.
