While watching the clip I was trying to understand the parameters and limitations. The text referred to a fix flask with a nut inside, with the task being to remove the nut from the flask without detaching the flask.

I wondered if the flask was attached in such as way that it could be revolved or rotated upside down, or if it were fixed so it could not be rotated.

When I saw that the flask was attached at the top and the bottom, with an opening at the top of the flask, the first thing I though of was raising the nut to the top of the flask by getting the nut to float to the top. The solution? Filling the flask with fluid, if any were available.

It turns out there was water inside the chimp’s enclosure, although I did not see the water there, but the chimp used it, floated the nut to the top, and extracted the nut.

So, Chimp 1, William 1.

Another trick Chimps often use is a form of tooling, in which they’ll use a twig or stick, insert that twig into a termite hill, extract the stick fill of termites, and have a nice supper.

They also wash food, such as potatoes, in the sea.

Of course, the other day I saw a chimp cooking Saag Paneer and Naan Bread, and mixing Mango Lassi in an Indian restaurant. When he saw me he said “Namaste.”

The leader says he hasn’t been given “this puzzle” before. Somehow I suspect he has been given a puzzle where water was the solution. I wouldn’t put a little dishonesty past NOVA.

In the “ghost experiment,” it probably wasn’t so much that he was full as much as the fact that the machine was doing it for him. Why would he bother?

I can honestly say I wouldn’t have though of that, at least for a while. Although this balances out any inferiority complex this Chimp just gave me.
