McCain should have already been shouting this out at every stop. A great campaign issue and I have not heard him mention it.

Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong!

I tell you what...the ignorance and denial of the Democrat party is remarkable. First, Marines are welcome ANYWHERE from the same man that says the war is lost....

This party wants control of every aspect of our life????
I hope not...

Laura, I am not sure where the heck Stevens is concerning this. I don't think he KNOWS what the Semper Fi Act is. At least Young is on it.

Still waiting on Murkowski.... But Stevens lost my vote. I am voting inde it seems for the next run.

<blockquote>Thank you for your email regarding H.R.5222, the Semper Fi Act. This bill would rescind federal funding appropriated for the City of Berkeley, California, including the university, in the Consolidated Appropriations Act enacted this previous December.

Our freedom has been obtained at the highest cost-secured by our fighting men and women who willingly serve, ready to give the ultimate sacrifice for the protection of their country and liberty. One aspect of our freedom is "Freedom of Speech." While I sympathize with your feelings, the actions of the city were the collective result of the citizens of Berkeley exercising their freedom. As you know, I am an outspoken supporter of our armed services-and I readily criticize actions such as those of Berkeley.

Incidentally, I and others have urged residents of Berkeley to demand this action be reversed.

Recent development in the Senate

Recently, the Senate passed the Recovery Rebates and Economic Stimulus Act, legislation meant to positively affect the economy. The bill, which the President has signed, contains an amendment I joined Senator McConnell and others in offering. It authorizes disabled veterans, and seniors to count their veterans' disability payment or Social Security payment toward the earned income test. It also prevents illegal aliens from receiving rebate checks. With best wishes,

                                                       Cordially,

                                                       TED STEVENS
                                                       U.S. Senator

Just to recap, the Berkely Council only rescinded the letter they were going to send to the Marines asking them to leave. Everything else is still in place. The special parking place for Code Pink (that is directly in front of the recruiting office so they can park their huge gas-guzzling vehicle there), the edict about encouraging people to impede "actively or passively" the work of the recruiters, etc...
So this is why Sen. DeMint, the co-sponsors, and us..want the bill passed.

I'm also wondering if in our own towns and cities, we can encourage our City Councils to have Code Pink designated as some sort of "unwelcomed invaders" like this? Return the favor?

Irony. The Marine Corps tends to recruit whoever has the determination to make something of themselves. This usually means that you aren't going to enlist too many people of privilege - mostly lower or middle class people. Funny that Democrats would claim to be the party that so fervently helps that constituency (though its always through redistribution of wealth) and yet deprive that very same group access to the promising life the military offers. On the surface its obvious why banning those recruiters is wrong, but its the underlying effect that's disgusting to me.

snaggletoothie, thanks!! I've got Boxer down as "Refusing to deny" - and you're spot-on with your reply to the "tradition" comment. Why would a senator care more about upholding a sneaky and unAmerican Senate tradition than in supporting the troops?

(Well, we know why, but it's good to call them out on it occasionally.)

Dear Laura I called this morning and talked to a guy at Boxer's office. He was very firm in telling me that holds are done anonymously. He seemed shocked when I told him that, "it's an old senate tradition" doesn't justify a public servant denying information to her constituents. Feinstein's office doesn't even answer their phone: it rings for a minute and then turns into a busy signal. Seems dumb to me since there must be some people calling who might even consider voting for her. Maybe she's not going to run again.

Why not get a National ballot and vote concerning all aspects of government... from the lowely State Legislature, all the way up to Congress and Senate. Anyone who makes Laws!

And say if you can't be honest, defend the reason why this or that law should or should not be, NOT have closed door sessions and give the people of the Republic (America) an explanation on the goings on..or.. You will lose your Seat and all the Benifits of your perspective position. Make it a Federal Law for those who do not have a State Law for it and make it a State Law for those who want it in their State.

I bet you are going to see a large bunch of individuals leave. And since it would be a Nation wide vote, even if they are Senators or Congressmen, they have to do the bidding of the People. Ironic how some things can actually be done.

But that is my opinion. And we know it will never happen.

<strong>Why should our Representatives be able to place "anonymous holds" on legislation? </strong>

If they are unwilling to stand up and defend their actions in public, shouldn't that automatically disqualify them from continuing to hold the office?

Remember, people, if we don't support the GOP nominee, this is what we get. And I don't think Code Pink wants "strict constructionists" being put on the court.

Sorry but Filthy Harry has it wrong again...

The Marines (and Armed forces) told Harry on the day <em>HE </em>was born; Harry, you may live <em>ANYWHERE </em>in the United States.

I wish all the major Right-to-Life organizations would just send a few dozen bus loads of protesters to Berkeley and have them behave exactly the same way as Code Pink is doing.

The hypocrisy would shine as brightly as the sun. And watching them explain the double standard would be rather entertaining.

The Dems, the liberal activists, and the radicals are riding the tides of successes they have enjoyed ever since 9/11 and the start of the war in Iraq and the start of the Patriot Act. Since that time, it's been all down hill from there with the Republican President Jorge' Boosh and other so-called Republicans pushing for ILLEGAL immigrant amnesty, then the series of Republican gay sex e-mails with interns and public bathroom fiascos, not to mention all the corruption charges resulting in hard prison time for other Republicans, etc ad nauseum. It's a disgrace the way the RNC has conducted themselves.

In less than 20 years the Republican party has completely destroyed the house that Ronald Reagan built. Now they reap what they sow. The bill wouldn't have even been necessary and this whole thing would never have happened if the lefty whack jobs hadn't been empowered and emboldened by the politiocal party the majority of us still cling to by tooth and nail... which may not last much longer on my end unless they can get their shit together real soon.

I'm still betting on either Boxer or Feinstein. I've never gotten a straight answer out of either of these loathsome biddies, and doubt they'll 'fess up now.

Larry Craig is taking his usual "wide stance" on the issue, I presume.

<blockquote>I wouldn’t waste my time trying to find if my senators were responsible for the hold.</blockquote>

We were able to pin down Stevens on the pork database secret hold. We can do it for this, too. And I got a human being from Boxer's office on the phone today. Press 3, and wait about 2 minutes and you'll get through. Granted, she was a young, friendly, clueless girl, who didn't know the answer, but just having the phone ring with the question is a Good Thing. We need to pressure them into letting this get to a floor vote. The Marines deserve the show of support.
