Exit polls: The night of tears? Update: Fox calls Virginia for Obama; Update: Obama wins Maryland too?; Update: McCain takes VA & MD; Update: When will Huck quit?

Huckabee within a single percentage point of Maverick in Virginia, says Geraghty — a 31-point gain in three days, if true. And check this out. Among women:

women.jpg

And:

conservs.jpg

radio.jpg

The lesson? Always stock up on liquor before a primary. Stand by for fuller exit poll results imminently. Virginia polls close at 7 p.m.

Update: At the risk of stating the obvious, it doesn’t much matter if Maverick actually pulls out a win in Virginia or not. The fact that it’s this close means Huckabee gets to extend the primary for another few weeks.

Update: 7 o’clock, the polls are closed, and the margin’s already great enough for Fox News to call Virginia for Obama.

The GOP race? Too close to call.

Update: Raw Story claims inside info indicating Obama wins in Maryland and D.C. too.

Update: Based on these exits, it sounds like Maverick’s going to pull it out in Virginia. Barely.

Update: Here’s the GOP exit poll in Virginia. Note the gender divide; down to the wire.

Update (MM): Fox, CNN call Virginia for McCain. “Winning ugly” is still winning.

Update (Bryan): Voting in Maryland was extended 90 minutes, so the polls there are just about to close. We should start getting some data soon.

Update (Bryan): And at 9:30 on the nose, Fox calls the GOP race for McCain. It must be a blowout. Maybe he even topped 50% for the first time. Obama also took Maryland.

Update: Say goodnight, Hucky.

[A]fter going 0 for 3 tonight, despite a valiant effort in Virginia, Huckabee is looking at probably no wins until Texas. (And I don’t think I’d automatically give him a majority or plurality in the Lone Star State, either.)

We’re going to hear a lot about how close tonight was, and Huckabee can have his head held high, but with 86 percent of precincts reporting, it’s McCain 50 percent, Huckabee 41 percent. A nine percent margin isn’t a rout, but it’s not neck-and-neck, either.

It’s a free country, and Huckabee can stay in as long as he likes. But I suspect the question, “what’s the point?” is going to get steadily louder in the coming weeks…

Update: Wow. McCain lost Navy territory?

Why should Huck quit, he has God on his side…

right2bright on February 13, 2008 at 1:33 AM

If it weren’t for the war and the certain future attacks on our soil, maybe I’d reconsider. But I’m just not willing to trust our safety to the likes of Clinton or Obama. At least the Islamic terrorists will take McCain more seriously than any Dem. I will hold my nose and vote for McCain.

And if you can’t do that, please don’t stay home. At least cast your votes for conservatives in Congress. Our country is at stake, this is no time to vote for Democrats!

NightmareOnKStreet on February 13, 2008 at 1:28 AM

I’m with ya. I don’t dislike some of McCain’s positions enough to sacrifice our nation’s security by voting for a dem. I truly believe that if Obama, especially, gets elected it’ll be open season on us.

bojack on February 13, 2008 at 1:43 AM

If it is, then we’ll fight back. When McCain declares war on conservative ideals as Bush did, the party faithful will follow him over the cliff.

If the country is getting screwed up by liberalism, let the Dems do it in the face of spirited opposition. Let’s not have McCain leading both parties and us down the road to perdition.

He certainly has a power that is not human driving his candidacy.

BKennedy on February 13, 2008 at 1:54 AM

The way McCain can beat Obama is to have one of his staff switch Obama’s teleprompter speech with Mein Kampf. That’ll through Baron Oburgandy for a loop.

BKennedy on February 13, 2008 at 1:57 AM

If it is, then we’ll fight back.
Valiant on February 13, 2008 at 1:54 AM

It’s takes a willing congress and a strong commander in chief to fight back. The strongest military in the world is useless without political will. We were attacked repeatedly during Billy’s presidency and he did nothing.

bojack on February 13, 2008 at 2:04 AM

What a story ending. The man accussed of destroying the republican party will be the one who bails them out.

THE CHOSEN ONE on February 12, 2008 at 10:06 PM

Yes. When they look back on Huckabee’s two terms in office from Jan 2009 – Jan 2017, and realize that he:
1) Built the fence
2) Got three new conservative justices confirmed to the SCOTUS
3) Abolished the IRS and replaced it with a Fair Tax
4) Got a Constitutional Amendment passed to protect the right to life (consistent with the Declaration of Independence, i.e. nothing new here, it’s just that activist liberal justices have made a Constitutional Amendment necessary to protect something the Constitution’s framers saw as a God-given right so obvious (self-evident) that it was taken for granted and not written explicitly into the Constitution, as it was in the Declaration of Independence which was written to the King of England, who they considered an ignoramous.)

The conservative scoffers and doubters of today will in 2017 look back and realize, “Wow. Huckabee did better than Reagan! Who would have thought that?”

Who would have thought that? We The People who are supporting Mike Huckabee right now, when no one else has eyes to see it. Yet.

Update: At the risk of stating the obvious, it doesn’t much matter if Maverick actually pulls out a win in Virginia or not. The fact that it’s this close means Huckabee gets to extend the primary for another few weeks proves to the rest of the primary states that he is a viable choice in their upcoming primary, and he could be the nominee when it gets to a brokered convention.

Oh the shark has pretty teeth dear
And he shows them pearly white
Just a jack-knife has Mac-Cain dear
And he keeps it out of sight

When the shark bites with his teeth dear
Scarlet billows start to spread
Fancy gloves though wears Mac-Cain dear
So there’s not a trace of red
On the sidewalk Sunday morning
Lies a body oozing life
Someone’s sneaking ’round the corner
Is the someone Mack the Knife

If the shark gets the backs of our troops, then I’m going to vote for him.
I’m willing to stay in the cage and let it devour the squishy liberal seals.

P.S. Huck is as tenacious as I am. He will not back down.

This contest isn’t over. It’s 4th quarter with 2:42 left in the game.

And speaking of the Superbowl, did you happen to notice that both “hell” and “Jesus” were mentioned (and projected on a huge screen), broadcast to millions of viewers, with a live audience cheering for the person saying those words?

It’s true.

Hell:

Well I won’t back down, no I wont back down
You can stand me up at the gates of hell
But I wont back down

Jesus:

She’s a good girl, loves her mama
loves Jesus and America too

Didn’t have eyes to see that?
That’s why you don’t have eyes to see that Huckabee/Thompson will defeat Obama/Edwards this November.

He’s as conservative as Bush.

He’s more conservative than Bush. McCain wants to build the military and stop outrageous government growth. He’s been pro-life his entire career. Neither McCain nor Bush is willing to demogogue on homosexuality, which is good.

Bush ran as the Mexico loving candidate in 2000 and still beat Al Gore. Bush has been pro-amnesty since at least that campaign in 1999/2000.

The people were able to stop the worst of it under Bush, and will be able to do so with McCain.

You think you can stop anything Obama and his liberal democrat congress want to do? Delusional.

Michelle Malkin, for one, should understand…

Well I won’t back down, no I won’t back down
You can stand me up at the gates of hell
But I won’t back down

Gonna’ stand my ground, wont be turned around
And I’ll keep this world from draggin’ me down
Gonna’ stand my ground and I wont back down

Hey baby, there ain’t no easy way out
Hey I will stand my ground
And I won’t back down.

Well I know what’s right, I got just one life
In a world that keeps on pushin’ me around
But Ill stand my ground and I won’t back down

Hey baby there ain’t no easy way out
Hey I will stand my ground
And I won’t back down
No, I won’t back down

Other posts have discussed how Democrat turnout for their primaries is roughly 50% greater than Republican turnout for their primaries.

Now consider this:
How many of those extra Democrats crossed over and voted for McCain in Florida and other states?

How many of those extra Democrats will cross over in future Republican primaries?

There are a lot of Republicans who have been sitting out the primaries, but could be motivated to come out in the primaries that have yet to be held. Those republicans will have zero motivation to come out for McCain. But they will be highly motivated to come out for Huckabee.

sarc: Texas *Hearts* John McCain. /sarc

Some Texas Republicans (CINOs) will actually be foolish enough to crossover and vote for Hillary Rodham Clinton. …Because they fear Barack Obama. Barack ain’t got game. It would be funny if it weren’t so sad. They’d rather vote for a woman who voted against confirming Roberts and Alito rather than vote for a man who will appoint more Roberts and Alitos (Huckabee).

All of which adds up to a very impressive Huckabee win in Texas. Could be even bigger than Kansas was.

True Conservatives:
Come join in the game of “Whack-A-Troll”.
It’s Fun! You should try it!

ITookTheRedPill on February 13, 2008 at 11:42 AM

…and the trolls thought they were going to whack me today!

I won’t back down.
And neither will Huckabee.

Huckabee/Thompson defeats Obama/Edwards in November.

ITookTheRedPill on February 13, 2008 at 11:49 AM

Five out of the last 6 posts here are yours. YOU are the troll.

I’m no fan of McCain, but at least I know he’ll fight the War on Terror and won’t tuck his tail and run in Iraq.

The Huckster’s foreign policy is playing nice with the neighbors and closing Gitmo.

He brings zero to the table. Nada.

The Fair Tax? No chance of passing.

Human Life Amendment? No chance of passing.

Abolish the IRS? No chance.

Taxpayer funded scholarships for illegals? Oh yeah, that’s real conservative.

Raising taxes by $500 million? I prefer to keep my money in my pocket. Thanks. Not conservative.

Hey Bryan,
At what point does someone become a spammer around here?

Just curious.. I’ve got herbal cure for cancer I need to sell.

ChrisM on February 13, 2008 at 12:01 PM

Fred said it best about the Huckster in the Myrtle Beach debate last month.

“This is a battle for the heart and soul of the Republican Party and its future,” Thompson said. “On the one hand, you have the Reagan revolution. You have the Reagan coalition of limited government and strong national security. On the other hand, you have the direction that Gov. Huckabee would take us in. He would be a Christian leader, but he would also bring about liberal economic policies, liberal foreign policies.”

Hey Bryan,
At what point does someone become a spammer around here?

ChrisM on February 13, 2008 at 12:01 PM

I don’t want to speak for Brian, but I suspect that he realizes my posts have merit, and aren’t just spam. I’m doing all of us a service by exposing trolls and giving you points of view from outside the Matrix.

You are a Matrix agent who wants to take me out.

Very useful analogy, isn’t it?

Those who can’t handle the truth often try to silence those who speak it.

Thank God (literally) for our Constitution’s 1st Amendment.

ITookTheRedPill on February 13, 2008 at 12:19 PM

It looks like HebrewToYou, like myamphibian, is a troll who has gone home.

If he comes back, here’s his spanking:

Yes, and neither are going to respect the ideals of conservatism. Huck only cares about What Jesus Would Do and McCain only cares about it being HIS turn to be president. That’s not leadership.
HebrewToYou on February 13, 2008 at 11:25 AM

What Jesus Would Do as Chief Executive?

Slap! Ouch! Now that’s gonna leave a mark!

(Don’t say I didn’t warn you!)

ITookTheRedPill on February 13, 2008 at 12:22 PM

The Fair Tax? No chance of passing.

bigred on February 13, 2008 at 11:50 AM

Now this is a bit “out there” for most of you, but it’s the truth and now is as good a time as any to share it.

The legal standing of the IRS is extremely questionable.

You accept the IRS as part of the Matrix, because it’s all you’ve ever known. You’ve never seen this country before it had an IRS. But, believe it or not, there was a time when this country collected taxes very successfully in other ways. Ways that are fully supported by the Constitution.

The brave souls who dare to challenge the legality of the IRS are dealt with very harshly. Yet the valid questions they raise have never been answered by our government. Ron Paul supporters, do your ears perk up? Take a long hard look at this and see what you think.

I think that the IRS doesn’t have a leg to stand on. But as brave as I have been here on Hot Air, I am not brave enough to challenge the IRS. Few are. But if a successful challenge were mounted against the legitimacy of income taxes, the house of cards would come crumbling down, our government would go broke, and there would be chaos and anarchy. So the time to fix the problem is now. In most states, you pay sales taxes at the time of purchase. Texas has no personal income tax. Why is it so hard to believe that we could have a national sales tax and no national income tax? It’s not hard to believe at all. How many hours a year do you spend preparing your income tax returns? Do you enjoy that? Nobody does. As a country, we waste huge amounts of resources just preparing, processing, and auditing income tax returns….all for an unconstitutional taxation system that says, “The more you earn, the more tax you pay” instead of “The more you spend, the more tax you pay”. The latter will be much better for our economy and, looking back, conservatives will be glad that President Huckabee abolished the IRS and instituted the Fair Tax.

But liberals won’t like it, because they won’t be able to redistribute the wealth as easily and incite class warfare over “Bush’s tax cuts for the rich!” (when in reality, are “Bush’s tax increases for the rich!”, but that’s another topic)

Welcome to the view outside the Matrix. Do you like the view? I do.

Now, would a troll or a spammer be linking to Rush Limbaugh?

ITookTheRedPill on February 13, 2008 at 12:33 PM

Now go home before I spank you again!

Dude. You’re ridiculous.

Slap! Ouch! Now that’s gonna leave a mark!

Bring out the ban-hammer…

Has someone spoken to Bryan/AP/Michelle about this guy spamming threads with his Huckabee/Thompson nonsense? Nothing of value is being added to the discussion by this troll. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the same person behind the Harald Haradra handle.

HebrewToYou on February 13, 2008 at 12:34 PM

Ugh. Drop this Matrix routine. Neo was a FICTIONAL character. And the Wachowski Bros. are some serious nutbags.

HebrewToYou on February 13, 2008 at 12:36 PM

Ever notice how it is the Democrats (not the Republicans) who like to incite class conflict and race conflict?

Remember how much John Edwards likes to talk about “Two Americas”?

That’s one more reason why it will be easy for Huckabee/Thompson to beat Obama/Edwards this November.

Heh.

Had to pop back in to post the answer to the question everyone’s been asking:

Why is Huckabee still running for President?

ITookTheRedPill on February 13, 2008 at 12:55 PM

…and he’ll be asked this question in media interviews on almost every program you can think of…

…from news programs to late night TV…

…and he’ll be able to get his message out to everyone…

…directly…

…sincerely…

…without some Talking Head from the Matrix telling you what he said (like they ALWAYS do immediately after any Bush speach)…

…and the best part is…

…he’ll get to do it for Free!

…God is good.

(I had to take a phone call, but now I want to finish the thought…)

…And the cool thing is, if Huckabee had won in Virginia last night, they wouldn’t be asking the question!

I didn’t predict that, but I knew that whatever happened would happen according to God’s plan.

God really is good. And He will be glorified when Huck wins.

The 1st Amendment establishment clause is there to protect the church from the government, not (as “Separation of Church and State” Liberals think) to protect the government from the church.

“Separation of Church and State” is NOT a Constitutional concept. You will not find those words anywhere in the Constitution or the Declaration of Independence (which birthed our country). We celebrate our nation’s birthday as the date of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, not the date of the signing or ratification of our Constitution. Take a good long look at the Declaration of Independence to see what and how our founders thought. It was written to someone they didn’t think “got it” (the King of England), so they didn’t take for granted that he would understand anything. They were explicit about their faith in God (Divine Providence) and the reasons why they were founding this country.

Here’s another SuperBowl connection…did you see the pre-game introduction where NFL players and Pat Tillman’s widow recited the Declaration of Independence line by line?

Did you have eyes to see that?

The liberty bell has a Bible verse on it. Did you know that? Lev. XXV X

The fact that this country was founded as a Christian nation gives you freedoms that no other citizen of any other country has.

The 1st Amendment guarantees that as long as we keep our Constitutional Republic, you will not have a national church established and forced upon you.

At the same time, there should never be restrictions of speech forced upon any citizen, including the President of the United States. Huck will NOT try to establish a national religion. But, if he quotes from the Bible, that’s no different than what our founding fathers did. And you should thank God (literally) that they did, or you wouldn’t enjoy the freedoms that you enjoy today.

Selah.

ITookTheRedPill on February 13, 2008 at 1:55 PM

Another SuperBowl connection:

God knows that the SuperBowl is the most watched event on TV all year.

If God is real, a real living God, don’t you think he’d want to tell the world that He loves them?

Do you really think it’s a coincidence that you see “John 3:16″ signs at practically every NFL game (unless the TV censors don’t let you see it)?

Do you really think that it’s a coincidence that both of last year’s coaches were Christians who would give the glory to God, so that no matter who won, God would be glorified?

Morpheus: The Matrix is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy. But when you’re inside, you look around, what do you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it.

…But wait, I thought Christians were too stupid to do something like that… /sarc

ITookTheRedPill on February 13, 2008 at 2:05 PM

This is so cool…I just now went looking for a link and found that John 3:16 is the Verse of the Day. Coincidence? Not for those with eyes to see. Just another “sign” from the Living God.

If you want to learn more about the Living God, go here.

ITookTheRedPill on February 13, 2008 at 2:14 PM

This is going to sound bad any way that I put it, but there are at least two very valid reasons for Huckabee to remain in that serve our party well.

1) McCain could become injured or ill and be unable to continue the race (I hope not.)
2) By staying in, Huckabee forces media coverage of conservative issues. If he gets out, media coverage of the Republican Party will cease until after the two party conventions.

I say that Huckabee should remain in as long as an excuse exist to continue the coverage of conservative ideas. He is not saying anything that will harm McCain in any way shape or form.

Wise Golden on February 13, 2008 at 2:17 PM

Huckabee is less of a conservative than McCain.

I like how you’re thinking. Thanks for being one of the rational conservatives.

However, I have to correct you on one point…

He is not saying anything that will harm McCain in any way shape or form.

Yes, yes, he is…
He’s saying (and committing in writing) to:

Ensure that the border fence construction is completed by July 1, 2010.

You think that won’t harm McCain “in any way shape or form”?

Hint:
Texas hasn’t held their primary yet.

And here is some good news that should make you all LOVE Huckabee…

If McCain finally agrees to the list of immigration measures sponsored by Senator Jeff Sessions, it will be because Huckabee forced McCain to do it in order to have any hope of winning Texas. Huck couldn’t make that happen if he quit now, could he?

How many of you have eyes to see that? It really isn’t hard to see. I should start hearing some chants of “Go, Huck, go!”

(and of course I expect a troll to respond, “Yes, go, Huck, go HOME!”, so I’ve now beaten you to that punch)

ITookTheRedPill on February 13, 2008 at 3:17 PM

Actually, watching McCain vs Huckabee right now is about as fascinating as watching Fatah vs Hamas, or Hizbullah vs Sunni Lebanese, or Iraq Shia vs Sunni, or 1980’s Iran vs Iraq, or Afghanistan Taliban vs other Jihadis.

We hated Huckabee and McCain when they were ganging up on Romney, but it’s funny to see them take on each other ;-)

Wonder how Michael Medved is weighing in on all this?
