Exit polls: The night of tears? Update: Fox calls Virginia for Obama; Update: Obama wins Maryland too?; Update: McCain takes VA & MD; Update: When will Huck quit?

Huckabee within a single percentage point of Maverick in Virginia, says Geraghty — a 31-point gain in three days, if true. And check this out. Among women:

women.jpg

And:

conservs.jpg

radio.jpg

The lesson? Always stock up on liquor before a primary. Stand by for fuller exit poll results imminently. Virginia polls close at 7 p.m.

Update: At the risk of stating the obvious, it doesn’t much matter if Maverick actually pulls out a win in Virginia or not. The fact that it’s this close means Huckabee gets to extend the primary for another few weeks.

Update: 7 o’clock, the polls are closed, and the margin’s already great enough for Fox News to call Virginia for Obama.

The GOP race? Too close to call.

Update: Raw Story claims inside info indicating Obama wins in Maryland and D.C. too.

Update: Based on these exits, it sounds like Maverick’s going to pull it out in Virginia. Barely.

Update: Here’s the GOP exit poll in Virginia. Note the gender divide; down to the wire.

Update (MM): Fox, CNN call Virginia for McCain. “Winning ugly” is still winning.

Update (Bryan): Voting in Maryland was extended 90 minutes, so the polls there are just about to close. We should start getting some data soon.

Update (Bryan): And at 9:30 on the nose, Fox calls the GOP race for McCain. It must be a blowout. Maybe he even topped 50% for the first time. Obama also took Maryland.

Update: Say goodnight, Hucky.

[A]fter going 0 for 3 tonight, despite a valiant effort in Virginia, Huckabee is looking at probably no wins until Texas. (And I don’t think I’d automatically give him a majority or plurality in the Lone Star State, either.)

We’re going to hear a lot about how close tonight was, and Huckabee can have his head held high, but with 86 percent of precincts reporting, it’s McCain 50 percent, Huckabee 41 percent. A nine percent margin isn’t a rout, but it’s not neck-and-neck, either.

It’s a free country, and Huckabee can stay in as long as he likes. But I suspect the question, “what’s the point?” is going to get steadily louder in the coming weeks…

Update: Wow. McCain lost Navy territory?

Yo, Anna:

Called Virginia a COMMUNISTWEALTH????

How dare ye?

Go try livin’ in the Democratic People’s Republic of Maryland for a few years, then move back and see if you can say that.

You obviously live in a city that taxes the he** outta ya. And if you’re in NoVa, I’ll bet I can name the city in 2 fast guesses: Either Fairfax or Falls Church.

Move to the county. Our taxes are lower.

Try this one on for size. The republican/conservative machine has laid off the Messiah, because they really don’t want even the thought of Hillary. When she is defeated they will turn their focus on him. He has a six point lead head to head with Maverick. It has been awfully quiet on the international front of late. If Achmeknvkjejjead, Kim Jong, Putin, or any other psycho get’s a little frisky, that six point lead goes bye bye. The general election highlights national security so much more than a primary. Here’s the call of the year: Maverick 52% Obama 48% Bank on it!

steveegg on February 12, 2008 at 9:13 PM

In a statement tonight, McCain camp mgr Rick Davis congratulated Mike Huckabee on his “strong showing” in VA, but insisted that John McCain “will be the Republican nominee.”

More: “He will continue to campaign hard in the coming contests across the country and unify the Republican Party for victory in November.”

“John McCain will continue to run on his core conservative principles. The stakes could not be higher in this election, and John McCain will contrast his vision for America with that of Senators Clinton and Obama. He will draw sharp contrasts: victory versus surrender to radical Islamic extremism; lower taxes and spending versus more big government; free-market solutions to health care versus costly mandates; and the appointment of strict constructionist judges versus those who legislate from the bench.”

You think Huckabee is a liar. Got it. Try this approach: give him 4 years to prove he will do what he says he will do. If he doesn’t, it’s 4 and out and I promise you that over the next four years, the worst you will get from Huckabee will be better than the best you’d get from Obama. I have openly committed to supporting Mitt Romney in 2012 if Huckabee doesn’t do what he says he’s going to do.

I would say that that seals it: Huckabee’s done. It is not mathematically possible for him to win the nomination. Moreover, if Huckabee continues, he risks becoming a joke, which certainly won’t help with a possible VP nod or any future run. But part of Huckabee’s success is that he continually confounds both conventional wisdom and the odds. Pushing forward when everyone told him it was over has gotten him this far. So who knows what he’ll decide. – BLAKE DVORAK

Kara, you’re simply wrong. Huck is no better than McCain. They are two sides of the same coin. And there are only four letters stamped on that coin: RINO.

Here’s the call of the year: Maverick 52% Obama 48%

Dude, you’re nuts. Obama is going to slaughter McCain. The Democrats — and the Mainsteam Media — haven’t even begun to pound on him. Once they do it’s a one man race. McCain was never really vetted. He is the darling of the MSM because they know he will be defeated by Hillary or Obama. It’s a done deal.

First, a very sincere apology to “HebrewToYou”…I used the terms “Jewish” and “Jews” in my post and only realized after submitting that you clearly prefer the terms “Hebrew” and “Hebrews”. No offense was meant, and I hope none was taken.

It’s not a matter of preference. You did nothing wrong. I’m just not Jewish. I’ve been bar mitzvah’d, confirmed and both of my parents are Jews. But I have no interest in religion. None whatsoever. So I’m a Hebrew to You. ;)

the worst you will get from Huckabee will be better than the best you’d get from Obama.

Nonsense. At least Obama doesn’t wear his religion on his sleeve. At least Obama doesn’t campaign for Republicans. At least Obama can refrain from petty insults. Metamucil anyone? Ageism disgusts me.

Huck is a troll just like all his supporters. That’s the only reason he’s still staying in this race. The space under his bridge is looking mighty empty.

HebrewToYou on February 12, 2008 at 9:30 PM

I’m no Huckabee fan, in any sense of the word, but McCain has done far more damage to the Republican party than Huckabee ever did.

Pastor Holiday Inn Express left the GOP in a shambles in AR when he finally left the Governor’s mansion (with some very dicey ethical issues, I might add, including signing up for a wedding registry so he could receive gifts over a certain cap) and he also said people who were against illegal immigration were unChristian and anti-life. If he’s done less damage than McCain, it’s only because he’s had less opportunity.

I detest McCain, but let’s not pretend Huck’s an improvement. The election is already over and conservatives have lost.

I really don’t see the resemblance to Bush in 2000 tho…back then, Bush was “pushed” on us by the GOP as early as 1998 as the presumptive front-runner. Needless to say, I didn’t much like that. If anything, the party power people didn’t push anyone this time around. McCain is clearly winning, even tho many hot-headed self-called “conservatives” blindly see…for whatever reasons…a “liberal turncoat” in McCain.

Your right. In 2000 Bush tried to sound like he would up hold the Constitution. Since then McCain has proudly demanded that he would tear it to shreds to suit his political career. There is no need to rehash the liberal policies of this “republican” candidate. It’s been done a thousand times on this and other blogs. Your also right in the fact that the GOP establishment hasn’t seemed to “push” any candidate. However, the mainstream media certainly have, and his name is McCain. Again, a slew of endorsements from the left confirm his true leanings and they are not in harmony with classical liberal or conservative views of government.

McCain is no longer a republican, regardless of whose “foot soldier” he was. Regardless of his “lifetime” conservative credentials. Regardless of the “double talk” express he espouses. In the end, in the last seven years, he has become a RINO, and will severely damage this party. But he doesn’t care. He deserves to be President. It’s his TURN!! The man is an insult.

Huck’s only got 4 states left he can even be a little bit competative: Texas, Mississippi, Kentucky, and North Carolina. I doubt he can get even 40% of the delegates left.

He’s done, folks; admitting it sooner (at least after March 4th) than later will save resources that will be needced later.

Hilarious! Mitt dropped out and we have had a slew of caucuses and primaries but he is still ahead of Huck. Hahahahaha.

Troy Rasmussen on February 12, 2008 at 10:00 PM

None of the McCain v. Huckabee crap matters. All of you guys need to wake up — and here’s why…

There are far more Dems and Independents voting in these primaries and caucuses than Repubs and Conservatives. They are motivated and they really do want to see another party in the White House.

Get ready. November, I believe, will be a very ugly month for Republicans and Conservatives. Just my $0.02…

eanax on February 12, 2008 at 9:55 PM

Looks like that has usually been the case.

McCain beats Obama in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, shall we keep going friends?

THE CHOSEN ONE on February 12, 2008 at 10:01 PM

eanax on February 12, 2008 at 9:55 PM

Your point has been dealt with several times in earlier threads. CK Maclaud posted lists showing that Democratic primary turnout almost always beats GOP turnout 3:2, even in years when the GOP wins the Presidency. The only recent exception was 1996 for obvious reasons, when GOP turnout was higher but we still lost.

There is no reason why November will be ugly, unless the defeatists and whiners cause it to be so. There is a lot of discontent at the Democratic Congress, and we should be making every effort to exploit that.

Pax americana on February 12, 2008 at 10:01 PM

McCain/[?] vs. Obama/Edwards = Be scared. Be Very scared.

Huckabee/Thompson vs. Obama/Edwards = Be excited. Be Very excited.

Huckabee/Thompson beats Obama/Edwards in Nov.

ITookTheRedPill on February 12, 2008 at 10:02 PM

It is now mathematically impossible for Huckabee to win the nomination.

bnelson44 on February 12, 2008 at 10:02 PM

He’s the least experienced and too far to the left to get anything through Congress

CCRWM on February 12, 2008 at 9:52 PM

Yeah, it’s not like he wont have the full throated backing and support of one of the most powerful sitting Senators or anything. I hear that the Dems. in the House really disagree with his positions too.

Deety on February 12, 2008 at 10:03 PM

McCain Needs 379

Romney Needs 905
Huck needs 974
Available in future races 763
% needed McCain 49.67%
% needed Romney 118.61%
% needed Huck 127.65%

Obama is morphing more and more into a socialist firebrand live on TV right now. … He’s a collectivist, a redistributionist, an economic ignoramus and serial violator of liberty
Baphomet on February 12, 2008 at 9:56 PM

A couple of decades of leftist control of our schools and the near total inability of postmoderns to think critically means that the nation is going to go socialist to one extent or another. The whole country has moved further left, which is why GW Bush, McCain and Huckabee all get to call themselves conservatives and only a handful of people get mad about it. The only question is will we take the slower road (McCain) or the express lane (Obama/Hillary).

I’m starting to think we’re going to have to hit rock-bottom, Venezuela-style, or at the very least, experience conditions like the 1970s for people to smarten up.

Laura on February 12, 2008 at 10:03 PM

The only thing that will stop Maverick are conservatives bent on revenge. Then they are only spiting their own agenda. Probably won’t happen, but wouldn’t suprise me.

I really hope Huck doesn’t quit. We need to keep this contest going for a couple months more yet, otherwise the Dems get all the attention.

It also means the policy debates keep going.

Pax americana on February 12, 2008 at 10:04 PM

Limerick on February 12, 2008 at 9:59 PM

Why, yes, I can.

There is a very good chance that the Republicans will not win the White House in November. If fact, I think the current split in Executive and Legislative branches will probably reverse. Meaning — the Dems will win the White House and the Repubs may gain marginal control of both the Senate and the House. Just a guess right now but this is based on the general sentiment out there. Voters want change in the White House and they want change (again) in the House and maybe at the Senate-level.
