Exit polls: The night of tears? Update: Fox calls Virginia for Obama; Update: Obama wins Maryland too?; Update: McCain takes VA & MD; Update: When will Huck quit?

Huckabee within a single percentage point of Maverick in Virginia, says Geraghty — a 31-point gain in three days, if true. And check this out. Among women:

And:

conservs.jpg

radio.jpg

The lesson? Always stock up on liquor before a primary. Stand by for fuller exit poll results imminently. Virginia polls close at 7 p.m.

Update: At the risk of stating the obvious, it doesn’t much matter if Maverick actually pulls out a win in Virginia or not. The fact that it’s this close means Huckabee gets to extend the primary for another few weeks.

Update: 7 o’clock, the polls are closed, and the margin’s already great enough for Fox News to call Virginia for Obama.

The GOP race? Too close to call.

Update: Raw Story claims inside info indicating Obama wins in Maryland and D.C. too.

Update: Based on these exits, it sounds like Maverick’s going to pull it out in Virginia. Barely.

Update: Here’s the GOP exit poll in Virginia. Note the gender divide; down to the wire.

Update (MM): Fox, CNN call Virginia for McCain. “Winning ugly” is still winning.

Update (Bryan): Voting in Maryland was extended 90 minutes, so the polls there are just about to close. We should start getting some data soon.

Update (Bryan): And at 9:30 on the nose, Fox calls the GOP race for McCain. It must be a blowout. Maybe he even topped 50% for the first time. Obama also took Maryland.

Update: Say goodnight, Hucky.

[A]fter going 0 for 3 tonight, despite a valiant effort in Virginia, Huckabee is looking at probably no wins until Texas. (And I don’t think I’d automatically give him a majority or plurality in the Lone Star State, either.)

We’re going to hear a lot about how close tonight was, and Huckabee can have his head held high, but with 86 percent of precincts reporting, it’s McCain 50 percent, Huckabee 41 percent. A nine percent margin isn’t a rout, but it’s not neck-and-neck, either.

It’s a free country, and Huckabee can stay in as long as he likes. But I suspect the question, “what’s the point?” is going to get steadily louder in the coming weeks…

Update: Wow. McCain lost Navy territory?

Hebrew said she didn’t like Reagan

HE. He didn’t like Reagan.

I’m only twenty five. I’ve voted twice for GWB and have been a registered Republican since I could vote. And now with only Huckabee, Paul and McCain left I’m re-registering as an independent. The GOP is no longer the party of conservatism.

I’m not sure what they’re looking for.

Cut taxes; shrink the size of the Federal gov’t; secure the borders; support Attrition Through Enforcement; nominate conservative judges. I don’t ask for much, but none of the remaining candidates appeals to me at all.

Paul always bring up the gold standard and surrounds himself with nutbags. Huckabee is a liberal who can’t utter a sentence without mentioning Jesus. McCain is against Free Spech and has no interest of playing ball with conservatives.

So I’m voting for the least experienced Democrat come November. Four years and out. Hopefully by then the GOP will come to its senses and nominate a true conservative and not just a bunch of lip-service-paying jabronis.

The Dems are turning out in far greater numbers throughout the primaries and a lot of people on our side think we’re going to get crushed in November. So I went back to the most recent comparable election year: 1968.
During the 1968 primaries, the Dems racked up 7.5 million votes, the GOP 4.5 million. Nixon, of course, won the presidential election, albeit narrowly.
Just trying to cheer you up (assuming you want McCain to win in November).

HebrewToYou on February 12, 2008 at 8:32 PM

Compare what you want to Huckabee’s stand on these issues. You have a viable candidate who will be everything you want in a President. But you don’t want to vote for him because he doesn’t “appeal” to you?

Many posters here think I’m crazy. How sane is your position? You’re acting like You want to be just like the Democrats who are voting to Obama for no substantial reason…he just “appeals” to you.

You think that it wouldn’t matter if a Democrat is in office for the next 4 years? Think again…2 or more liberal Supreme Court justices would retire and be replaced with young, liberal justices who will serve for the majority of the remainder of your life. We have 4 solid conservative justices now. The other 5 are 68 years old or older. We need only one more conservative justice to tip the balance of power in the Supreme Court!

This election will determine if you have a liberal Supreme Court or a conservative Supreme Court for decades to come. This ain’t just about the next four years. And you want to put Obama in office to nominate two or more liberal justices.

Or, you could vote for McCain, the father of the Gang of 14, who called Alito “too conservative”

Or, you could vote for Huckabee who will appoint more justices like Roberts, Alito, Thomas, and Scalia. Which is what you want, right?

nominate conservative judges. I don’t ask for much

Wake up and Grow up. Huckabee is what you are looking for, but you don’t like him because he talks about Jesus. Well, assuming that you are Jewish (seems logical given “HebrewToYou”), you should realize that Christians are the best friends Israel ever had. NO ONE else fights to defend the Jews and Israel. You must realize that.

In fighting the war that the Islamofascists have declared against Jews, Christians, and nations that are predominantly Jewish and Christian (Israel, The USA, England, Australia) no one is better than Mike Huckabee to defend us.

Though it is a scary thought, he is right. In the 2006 elections, republicans and conservatives came out to vote. But the GOP lost,by a good amount, among independents. In 2008, republicans are going to have a big disadvantage among independents. In most polls a majority of Americans don’t trust republicans on every issue. McCain’s natural strength among independents is why he is the best candidate who can win at this time, not the best overall conservative candidate.

on the turn out myth. Basically, democrats are just more eager then republicans to be in power, it doesn’t usually translate into a general election.

Retirees are the new silent majority. They’re fiesty, they always vote, they don’t use cell phones or the internets, and they love McCain.

Pass it on.

VA Precincts Reporting:
1,998 of 2,472 (80.82%)

John McCain 157,274 49.53%
Mike Huckabee 130,546 41.11%

He’ll do a lot better than Pastor Huckabee and Mitt the phony.

Huck doesn’t appeal outside evangelicals and rural voters. Most indie voters think young earth creationists are only slightly less wacko than UFO spotters.

The Silent Majority runs this country, aka as moderates. We always hear the screams and shreaks of the far left and far right, but in the end this group decides which way the election will tilt.

I think the word “decides” is faulty. It merely comes about by superficiality and chance. Yes this voting block determines who will win, but I don’t think there are as many moderates as people who pick one day a year to look into politics and vote and then go home and stick their head into the sand for a year. I know it is mere semantics I am arguing over but the idea of the middle being thought of as deciding on anything is preposterous. I don’t think anybody can make a political decision unless they attempt to have a world view, otherwise it is an incoherent patchwork quilt that was usually regurgitated down their throat by the mother robin, the MSM.

Study the McGovern campaign. Obama’s campaign reminds me a lot of the McGovern campaign

If Mac gets above 50% this will have been a good result. Especially in the Commonwealth.

Oh, good grief!

I wasn’t challenging his proposition (although some pretty heavy generalizations were made in it) but rather the over-the-top dramatic “we the moderates” speech. Again, good grief!

Weight of Glory on February 12, 2008 at 9:09 PM

hebrew and choosen one, huck is better than mcain, he was not the best choice over all.

I am a Goerge Allen man. Hell I would vote for Mark Warner over Mcain.

We had our chance and blew it.
