Exit polls: The night of tears? Update: Fox calls Virginia for Obama; Update: Obama wins Maryland too?; Update: McCain takes VA & MD; Update: When will Huck quit?

Huckabee within a single percentage point of Maverick in Virginia, says Geraghty — a 31-point gain in three days, if true. And check this out. Among women:

And:

The lesson? Always stock up on liquor before a primary. Stand by for fuller exit poll results imminently. Virginia polls close at 7 p.m.
Update: At the risk of stating the obvious, it doesn’t much matter if Maverick actually pulls out a win in Virginia or not. The fact that it’s this close means Huckabee gets to extend the primary for another few weeks.
Update: 7 o’clock, the polls are closed, and the margin’s already great enough for Fox News to call Virginia for Obama.
The GOP race? Too close to call.
Update: Raw Story claims inside info indicating Obama wins in Maryland and D.C. too.
Update: Based on these exits, it sounds like Maverick’s going to pull it out in Virginia. Barely.
Update: Here’s the GOP exit poll in Virginia. Note the gender divide; down to the wire.
Update (MM): Fox, CNN call Virginia for McCain. “Winning ugly” is still winning.
Update (Bryan): Voting in Maryland was extended 90 minutes, so the polls there are just about to close. We should start getting some data soon.
Update (Bryan): And at 9:30 on the nose, Fox calls the GOP race for McCain. It must be a blowout. Maybe he even topped 50% for the first time. Obama also took Maryland.
Update: Say goodnight, Hucky.
[A]fter going 0 for 3 tonight, despite a valiant effort in Virginia, Huckabee is looking at probably no wins until Texas. (And I don’t think I’d automatically give him a majority or plurality in the Lone Star State, either.)
We’re going to hear a lot about how close tonight was, and Huckabee can have his head held high, but with 86 percent of precincts reporting, it’s McCain 50 percent, Huckabee 41 percent. A nine percent margin isn’t a rout, but it’s not neck-and-neck, either.
It’s a free country, and Huckabee can stay in as long as he likes. But I suspect the question, “what’s the point?” is going to get steadily louder in the coming weeks…
Update: Wow. McCain lost Navy territory?

And completely oblivious to Huckabee’s liberal record in Arkansas. If you hate abortion, love guns and embrace Jesus you’re a-okay to them. Doesn’t matter if you raise taxes, campaign for Democrats, and call fellow Republicans shiites.

According to the latest U.S. Census, the Latino community comprises approximately 6% of Virginia’s population. In fact, Latinos are among the fastest- growing ethnic groups in the state, with native-born U.S. citizens coming here from all parts of the country, and foreign-born residents coming from all over the world. Their wide range of skills and diverse cultures brings endless potential to the Commonwealth.

I’d prefer to hit McCain over the head with a shovel and take my chances with Huckabee. At least with Huckabee, I know there’s a chance we can stop the war against Christianity. Even if that’s not possible, I’d still prefer to lose if it means McCain is not rewarded.

Which of the 1,000 pardons and clemencies are you referring to? The rapist who got paroled after Huckster personally intervened on his behalf after the parole board denied parole on a 5-0 vote? The Huckster spin is that the previous governor was responsible for making him eligible for parole, but Huck is the one who made sure he went free to kill.
But thank you for confirming my suspicion that most of the Huckster’s supporters are completely clueless with regards to his record.
Hollowpoint on February 12, 2008 at 6:56 PM
He granted more pardons than the three former governors combined. While he signed the Fair Tax pledge, he raised taxes consistently in Arkansas. Fair Tax will not be passed anytime soon, by the way.
Of course, we could go on to Huck’s ignorance (See: U.S.-Cuban relations), his support for a smoking ban, his statement that Bush’s foreign policy is “arrogant”, his statement to bring the Constitution in line with the word of God, his tuition breaks for illegal aliens, his original statement that opposition to McCain’s amnesty was partially driven by racism, and much more.
amerpundit on February 12, 2008 at 6:56 PM
Krathamer (sp>) just said that Huck isn’t running against McCain, he is running against Romney and trying to get more delegates than Romney.
bnelson44 on February 12, 2008 at 6:57 PM
Pax americana, Gregor is absolutely accurate. McCain is no better than Hillary or Obama. I wouldn’t vote for Huckabee under any circumstances, but other than that Gregor is right on the money.
McCain is not only incapable of being elected President, he’s incapable of leading. He can’t even convince his OWN party to back him. What. A. Goober.
It is offensive, Dhornertx, but the reasons Evangelicals are giving for supporting Huckabee are pretty darn stupid. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck.
I don’t think Evangelicals are underbrained. I think it’s silly to stereotype any religious group. But they definitely aren’t voting rationally. Huckabee is a frickin’ joke.

What a stupid, shallow comment. Thompson had principles. What does Huck have besides a deep, profound affinity for mentioning Jesus in every sentence he utters? Oh, yeah. He plays the bass guitar, too.
The fair tax doesn’t solve a damn thing and would never get anywhere. Same with his silly Anti-Gay-Marriage amendment and his Anti-Abortion amendment. All those would do is make centrists hate the Republican party, and we need centrists in the general election.
Hollowpoint nails it. Kara has no idea what Huck’s record is. But I bet Kara is quite informed about how pious Huck is, how great a musician Huck is, and how funny Huck is. For, as we all know, those are Presidential traits that matter! Ugh.

MCain will win the delgates and the nomination.
Hillary will win the popular vote and lose the delagate count.
Then the Supremes will decide the Democrat nomination in Obama’s favor after deciding that the DNC must live by it’s own rules and not include the Forida and Mich delagates.
The only wild card will be the Super delagates.(Within the rules of the DNC) which will give it to Hillary
If it goes against Obama, be prepared for massive protests!

Big S on February 12, 2008 at 7:08 PM
McCain is a very strong candidate, compared to everyone else running, he is the strongest. Why?
Obama doesn’t have any accomplishments, and no real agenda except a very liberal one. All he does well is make speeches.
Hillary is running in her husband’s shadow and has very high negatives
Huck is a regional candidate and would lose a general election where more than just evangelicals can vote
McCain has experience, is a moderate (there are more of them then conservatives), can pull in hispanics and independents, is consistant.

CNN’s John King, using the magic map-board, plugged in Huckabee winning the rest of the primaries from here on out with 55 percent of the vote to 45 percent of the vote. McCain still clinched the nomination under that scenario, because of the proportional awarding of delegates.

HebrewToYou this is utter garbage, but I’ve exposed the galling hypocrisy of the you so-called ‘real’ conservatives before. When a pro-life, anti-tax hikes, anti-socialised healthcare, pro-free trade, anti-surrender in Iraq, pro-military investment, anti-Islamic appeasment, anti-pork barrel spending, anti-federal deficit candidate runs against one that holds the opposite opinions, it isn’t hard to see which one is preferable from a GOP persepective. My first choice candidate may not have a hope in hell of winning, but Jonny Mac trumps the Democrats every day of the year.
If you were really interested in ‘real’ Reagan conservatism you would have been getting behind the one solid candidate left in the race on all the conservative issues, an appointee of the great man himself, Dr Allan Keyes. Instead we have to endure your whining, defeatist, pessimist drool.

There is no genuine “good” candidate in this race…there is only a bad (Huckabee), a really bad (McCain), and two absolutely DREADFUL (Hillary and Obama) candidates. But…I think we’re all overlooking one very basic truth. No president can act unilaterally – I don’t care what any of them say they’re going to do, the President is NOT a part of the legislative branch. Why is this important? Because, I’m afraid that many of you have become so disgusted with the entire process that you might simply stay home in November. And that would be even more disastrous than a Hillary presidency. (Which, to me, is the most catastrophic of all outcomes.) It’s more important than ever before that we learn all we can about the conservative candidates for the House, the Senate, as well as our state and local elections – and then, VOTE for them. The best defense against rampant liberalism in the White House is a wall of conservatisim in the House and Senate. At the very least, we can help to set the agenda for the next four years.
