Berkeley update: Code Pink lives up to its usual self; plus Harry Reid weighs in Update: The Semper Fi Act might pass tonight

According to an email that went out to Pat Dollard as well as Michelle, Code Stink accosted the Move America Forward protesters who were on hand to support the troops today. The local and state police didn’t help out when asked.

Berkeley erupted in violence Tuesday morning when the Communist, terrorist-supporting anti-war group crossed into Martin Luther King Park and assaulted pro-troop individuals. Riot police stood by, but did not stop the assaults.

Police agencies did not respond to calls for help.

Move America Forward, the nation’s largest pro-troop organization, received permits from the City of Berkeley to hold a daylong demonstration in MLK park against the City Council who passed three outrageous resolutions calling U.S. Marines “unwanted intruders.”

“It is mayhem on here,” MAF communications director Danny Gonzalez said from the park early Tuesday morning.

On the Hill, other Code Stinkers are roaming the hallways to pester Senators. According to a source:

About 6-8 Code Pinkers just came by our office in Russell to protest the Semper Fi bill… They are going to all the cosponsors offices and demanding to speak with the Senators, while filming with a video camera the whole time. They’ve dropped off a pink flyer, a photo of Marine 2nd Lt. Shane Childers (first American killed in Iraq) and about 20 pages of printed out emails in support of the Berkeley resolution. I imagine that pales in comparison to the number that have signed the MoveAmericaForward.org petition.

Hopefully that video will turn up soon. These people certainly aren’t shy about their insanity.

Also on the Hill, Sen. Harry Reid was asked about the Berkeley city council’s anti-Marine antics at a Democrat press conference today.

QUESTION: Do you think the statement made by the Berkeley City Council was appropriate? What should the response of the United States Senate be?

REID: To be very honest with you, I don’t know what the Berkeley City Council said. I have enough trouble keeping track of the Las Vegas City Council, so I’m sorry…

QUESTION: They said the Marines were not welcome in Berkeley.

REID: Well, if they said that, I’m disappointed. The Marine Corps should be welcome anyplace in the United States.

Yes they should. For once, I agree with Dingy Harry.

Update: The DeMint Semper Fi (*and Universal Hippie Punch) Act might get its chance shortly. Unless some senator sneaks in an objection, it could be passed by unanimous consent as early as tonight. That would mean that Harry Reid’s gambit flopped.

REID: Well, if they said that, I’m disappointed. The Marine Corps should be welcome anyplace in the United States.

“….as long as that means they’re out of Iraq” continued Senator Reid.

RDuke on February 12, 2008 at 5:34 PM

The local and state police didn’t help out when asked.

Not surprised.

On another note, good for Harry. That won’t win him any favor with the Code Pinkos, and he’s on the record saying the Marines should be welcome anywhere. I think that’s the first time I’ve agreed with him.

amerpundit on February 12, 2008 at 5:37 PM

I’m surprised that there isn’t any video or pictures of Code Pink and other anti-military protesters assaulting the Move America Forward group. I thought cameras and videos were standard equipment for protests now.

I’m glad you asked. I was just looking for this morning’s post from The Hill.

What’s the follow up on Dingy Harry’s attempt to block Jim DeMint’s bill to defund Berkley?

Kini on February 12, 2008 at 5:45 PM

After McAmnesty/Billary/HusseinObama empty Gitmo and assign million dollar lawyers to each of the terrorists at taxpayer expense, can we at least try to figure out a way to use the vacant prison for the likes of Code Pink et al…?

Seems like a fair trade off.

FIFY.

thirteen28 on February 12, 2008 at 5:48 PM

Harry Reid is the first leader of the Senate who has surrendered to the enemy by reading “We have lost the war” into the Congressional Record while having American troops on the battlefield. Not one dimocrat even hinted at objecting. Obama is worse.

volsense on February 12, 2008 at 5:50 PM

Reid is worthless but Code Pink is rancid, traitorous scum.

rplat on February 12, 2008 at 5:55 PM

I’m surprised that there isn’t any video or pictures of Code Pink and other anti-military protesters assaulting the Move America Forward group.

I think there would be if it had really happened. I call shenanigans. If it did happen as described, MAF at least aren’t very tech-savvy to not have covered and uploaded it. (By the way, MLK Park is two blocks away from the recruitment center, but right next to City Hall, for those of you who want to know the geography of the situation.)

Leave it to peaceniks to attack those peacefully opposing them.

DrMagnolias on February 12, 2008 at 6:03 PM

I think anyone who was assaulted and did not receive police assistance should begin a civil rights lawsuit against the city, county, and state.

Protect and serve? Not just a logo for dragnet. Extract a seven figure judgement on those purveyors of free speech, and hit them where it hurts.

I wouldn’t go to berzerkley, if it were the last safe place on earth, and yes, I do question their patriotism.

rightside on February 12, 2008 at 6:03 PM

The Republicans should make stripping Berkley of all Federal funding a priority. Including law enforcement. Since it seems Berkley PD doesn’t understand basic law enforcement.

Iblis on February 12, 2008 at 6:07 PM

Why doesn’t someone just kick these peoples asses. Next time MAF meets in Bezerkly, they need to let some old vets know so we could supply security. Some of us would happlily demostrate, lovingly, how we feel about code pink.

Zelsdorf Ragshaft on February 12, 2008 at 6:08 PM

This story is all wrong. The hippies threw the first punch and…our side called the police? Talk about your weaksauce.

Hey Code Pink. Please come protest the marines somewhere in Texas, and throw a few elbows while you’re at it. Please please pretty please?

TexasDan on February 12, 2008 at 6:13 PM

On second thought, we don’t hit girls here. What to do?

TexasDan on February 12, 2008 at 6:15 PM

Reid waffles again…I guarantee that he knows damn well what the Berkeley fuss is about, and is playing CYA. Jerk.

And what about those great strong patriotic ladies, Mesdames Pelosi, Feinstein and Boxer? Probably busy having lunch with the Code Pinkettes.

Hope there’s a roll-call vote on DeMint’s bill. I wanna know who voted and how they voted.

Oh, yeah — Sen. Clinton: not voting.

MrScribbler on February 12, 2008 at 6:17 PM

Frankly, I have a hard time believing the story exactly as it was described. But having lived in Northern California, I probably shouldn’t underestimate the depravity of a good portion of the local population. But I don’t see the police passively siding with libtards as they assault people. Seems like a little much, and I hope I am right.

RW Wacko on February 12, 2008 at 6:18 PM

Hmmm… actualy…

Sounds like the Vets have a potential lawsuit against the city of Berkley as well.

No way that the cops are doing this on their own, therefore the Vets are NOT getting equal protection under the law.

Federal Civil Rights suit… I’ll hold my breathe until the ACLU shows up…. not…

Romeo13 on February 12, 2008 at 6:18 PM

Is it just me, or does anyone else get a chuckle out of the sign the Code Pinkos used in the front page photo?
Join the Marines
travel to exotic lands
meet exciting unusual people
AND KILL THEM

That’s not an indictment, it’s a sales pitch!

I have three friends who are Marines, and one whose an Army guy, who all wear tee shirts emblazoned with a similarly worded sentiment. In fact, I’m pretty sure the templates are still somewhere in my basement file cabinet.

There is a great irony being played out in Berkely. In the 60s, the hippies and the radicals moved in protesting the Vietnam War and generally trying to tear down “The Establiment.” The succeeded over the years in that the 60s whackos now run the joint. And now that they are “The Establishment,” they are getting a taste of their own medicine as the patriots descend on their town to defend the presence of the Marines.

I saw one quote from one of the moonbats stating that “the 60s are still alive.” No, wrong as usual. The 60s are dead and you have become the enemy that you took down. It’s a new century and the new boss is the same as the old boss. Time for the hippies to move aside for a new generation.

calbear on February 12, 2008 at 5:56 PM

I am inclined to agree. The email seemed a bit hyperbolic, and I’m inclined to doubt the cops will just stand by when a protest with this much coverage gets violent. Law enforcement is certainly politically driven in a communtiy, but it is also driven by the desire to avoid bad publicity. They knew the potential for violence existed. I’ll wait till I see some proof they ignored violence..

I’ve personally witnessed some shocking instances of assault by “peace” activists.

You have to understand that these are like Klan meetings in which they shout for hours about how their opponents are slavering baby-killers who enjoy the taste of money on their fingers as they dine on the innocent dead, and how “any means nessesary” is justified in ending their reign.

All it takes is the presence of four or more people who visibly disagree with them to bring one of these things to a roiling state in which each “peace” activist in the crowd is looking for the slightest basis to claim they were unnessesarily provoked to throw the first punch.

That said, we’re probably looking at a 40 second shoving match.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 12, 2008 at 7:02 PM

Also from my experience with these things, I would take it to be likely that either nobody on the right side brought a camera, somebody brought a camera but wasted their time videotaping the moonbats and missed the incident, or has the footage on a tape where it will sit for the forseeable future for no good reason.

There has been a lot of unfairness to Code Pink. They are clearly profoundly emotionally disturbed. Their pathological relationships with their fathers is being worked out loudly in public and they are screaming for help. Maybe Doctors Without Borders could dispatch some shrinks.

http://radiopatriot.blogspot.com/2008/02/patriots-on-roll.html

Dave says some Code Pinkos have penetrated the center of the Patriots — a fight has broken out — about 50 cops in riot gear are trying to separate the two groups. Dave is taking photos of the fracas.

Moments later, he says there must be a hundred cops now in riot gear, two rows of cops in between the two groups — spilled over into the street — TV cameras rushing over to capture it. The peace loving Code Pinkos are the aggressors, moving in to encircle the Move America Forward Patriots.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 12, 2008 at 8:13 PM

I don’t believe that really supports the “cops did nothing” narrative, but it sounds about right.

William Amos on February 12, 2008 at 8:36 PM

Another account of this altercation elsewhere didn’t characterize it as ‘assault’ (rather, as a verbal showdown). I think there are connotations and meanings there (i.e. ‘assault’) that are potentially not accurate. I’m going to give the police the benefit of the doubt – if ‘assault’ occurred, I’m thinking the police would have responded.

Midas on February 12, 2008 at 8:58 PM

Well, then again, i see Hiney’s post, so maybe ‘assault’ is right. Where are those pictures?

Midas on February 12, 2008 at 9:01 PM

The assault was a verbal or physical threat without bodily contact…in simple legal terms. It was probably yelling foul language at MAF and being confrontational. That’s probably why no reaction for the law. I like the earlier suggestion , file a suit under equal protection rights, they were assaulted.
I would think there is probably is a law suit against the city and Code Puke for restricting and interfering with a licensed business.

labrat on February 12, 2008 at 10:24 PM

Midas on February 12, 2008 at 9:01 PM

I ended up reading the entire account on the way home and it seems to me there wasn’t a proper assault. Some typical moonbat behavior such as cutting the extension chord to MAF’s PA, a lot of neaking into the crowd and making a scene and getting in one anothers’ faces. That sort of thing.

As far as the status of the pictures, i offer that my set of guidelines for how conservatives handle protest documentation (with the sole exceptions of Marathon Pundit and zombietime) are probably operative in this event.

1) nobody brought a camera

2) somebody brought a camera but wasted their time videotaping the moonbats and missed the big incident

3) the footage is reposed on a tape where it will sit for the forseeable future for no good reason.

4) footage is extracted from tape, compressed into sharable clips, and is being distributed as an e-mail attatchment

Hiney Von Pewps on February 12, 2008 at 10:28 PM

Reid is trying out for hollywood now? Reid acted like he’d never heard about what had transpired in Berkeley in the past week, HOWEVER, he’s the reason Jim DeMint’s legislation the Semper Fi Act” was delayed.

Don’t give him any credit he doesn’t deserve.

Remember years ago during the VietNam War, when they had this group of anti-war protestors from the SDS who were holding one of their usual loud-mouth burn-the-flag rallies in the streets of New York, and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, about a hundred or so construction workers in hardhats came charging down the street and proceeded to beat the living snot out of the protestors?

Perhaps next time Move Forward holds one of these rallys in Berkeley, they should make it a point to have it within walking distance of the nearest major construction site.
