Video: Zednik escapes death, barely

Whatever the opposite is of an afternoon palate cleanser, this is it. He’s okay — in the hospital and in stable condition — but he got a slashed carotid for his trouble and just missed having a slashed jugular too.

The video, mercifully, is not very graphic, especially compared to the infamous clip of Clint Malarchuk getting his throat slashed in the crease. It almost looks like there was no blood. There was.

Blowback

Saw this on Sports Center this morning. Not a good way to start your day.

Yep, saw this. Nasty. Glad to hear he’s doing alright.

Zetterson on February 11, 2008 at 3:05 PM

Holy moly! A palate cleanser? Not so much. A heebie-jeebie inducer? Dude.

KelliD on February 11, 2008 at 3:06 PM

Hope he will be ok. He’s very lucky.

kcd on February 11, 2008 at 3:08 PM

Good grief. That’s one tough hombre.

LimeyGeek on February 11, 2008 at 3:08 PM

I knew a man who was using a circular saw, overhead, (not real smart) it hit a nail, bounced down & hit him in the neck. Cut his artery & he drove himself 25 miles to the hospital. Lost a LOT of blood but survived. He did say later that he did not realize it was that bad. The Dr. said THAT is what saved his life. He did not panic.

Here’s the Malarchuk video:

Damn.

Wow, I am so glad he’s ok. I love the physicality of hockey, but I hate it when someone gets seriously hurt.

True dat.

I was half expecting to see someone read from the Koran followed by chants of “Huckahu Akbar”.

Being a Red Wings fan, I used to have a T-shirt that said, Give Blood. Fight Probert.”

You would think it would happen more often but this and the Malarchuk incident are all that I remember.

My favorite was a homeless Canadian guy holding a sign reading “Will cross-check Claude Lemieux from behind for food.”

liquidflorian on February 11, 2008 at 3:39 PM

Was having a pleasant time watching “center ice” on DTV when it ceased to be a ‘game’ any longer.

Close call while in the fast lane. Best wishes to Zed.

One of my guys.

I saw almost the same thing happen to Rick McLeish one time at the Spectrum

N. O'Brain on February 11, 2008 at 3:52 PM

The announcers sound really shaken up. It must have been horrible if you were saw the whole thing.

I’m glad he is well. I’d hate to be his poor teammate who cut him, even if he couldn’t help it.

TX Mom on February 11, 2008 at 3:55 PM

I watched it live last night. I didn’t feel to well at the time either. The whole arena was in silence for about 15 mins.

Oh BTW, GO SABRES!

matd on February 11, 2008 at 3:59 PM

God bless him.

That is great. I think it is now time for chainmail turtlenecks in the NHL.

Bengt Åkerblom, a Swedish player, did die from a skate to the throat.
Scary stuff. In many years on the ice I never saw even a finger harmed by a skate.

Yeah. There was a day when stick fighting would cause the most damage.

My friend broke his neck slamming head first into the boards.

But this sort of thing is just freak.

Drum on February 11, 2008 at 4:17 PM

Why don’t they wear something to protect the neck against the blades? I wouldn’t think it would take particularly much.

Blacklake on February 11, 2008 at 4:27 PM

I’m guessing that the medical staff of the NHL have a ready supply of Quik-clot on hand.

Would that do any good on an artery?! I mean, you have to have just a matter of minutes to get some serous medical attention!

College and kids leagues have rules mandating neck guards, they’re out there, but not worn in the NHL and I never saw anyone waring them in the beer leagues I’ve played it. People rarely get their legs up that high, Goalies are more likely to get cut like that and usually their chest gear has a built in neck guard.

liquidflorian on February 11, 2008 at 4:38 PM

Dang, it just dawned on me that we’ll know what’s up if al Qaeda sends a hockey team to the Olympics.

Drum on February 11, 2008 at 6:30 PM

Clint Malarchuk’s life was saved by his team’s athletic trainer, Jim Pezuletti, who had seen similar wounds while serving as a medic in Vietnam. He reached into Malarchuk’s neck to pinch off the bleeding until doctors began suturing the wound.

Awful as it seems in some cases, you’ll learn everything you need to know in the military.

I’ve played/coached for over 20 years and never saw any cuts from skates. Sticks, wire fencing used before plexi glass but never skates. There was a young player here in Wisconsin a few years ago who died after taking a slapshot in the chest stopping his heart.

The kids (Pee Wee’s 9-12 yo) I coach now don’t have to wear neck guards.

You beat me to it.

When I was still on Active Duty, there was a range accident when a round was jammed in the barrel of an M60. It was in the hole, and the guy was told to not go near it, but he did anyway. The round cooked off and part of the casing went through his neck.

Luckily one of the range NCO’s had been a medic in Vietnam or the guy would be dead.
