US to seek death penalty for KSM, other 9-11 figures

They’re all held at Gitmo as enemy combatants, and will be tried under military tribunals. Expect the ACLU to provide for their defense as much as possible while Rosie O’Donnell tries to convince View watchers that they’re not the be-all end-all of terrorism.
The U.S. military announced sweeping criminal charges Monday against six top al-Qaeda suspects, including alleged Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed, for their roles in the 2001 terror attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people and thrust the U.S. into wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Air Force Brig. Gen. Thomas Hartmann says military prosecutors will request that the defendants face the death penalty if convicted under the military tribunal system…
In addition to Sheik Mohammed, known as “KSM,” the others charged are:
* Ramzi bin al-Shibh, who allegedly helped find the flight schools where the hijackers were trained.
* Mohamed al-Qahtani, thought to be the so-called “20th hijacker” who was refused entry into the United States at the Orlando, airport a few weeks before the attacks.
* Ali al-Aziz Ali, accused of funneling thousands of dollars to the hijackers to finance flight training and living expenses in the U.S.
* Mustafa Ahmed al-Hawawi, alleged to have assisted hijackers in obtaining credit cards and western clothing.
* Walid bin-Attash, accused of arranging training for hijackers in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
All of the defendants are being held at the U.S. military detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
The military will recommend that the six men be tried together.
But the cases may be clouded because of recent revelations that Sheik Mohammmed was subject to a harsh interrogation technique known as waterboarding — which critics call torture.
Hartmann said it will be up to the military judge to determine what evidence is allowed and that prosecutors “can’t compel the CIA” to produce information. We “evaluate evidence that comes to us and review it to determine if there’s probable cause,” he said.
That’s where the ACLU/Wahhabist-backed, Obama-endorsing Gitmo Lawyers Guild is likely to attack the case.

Why give them the “honor” of dying as martyrs? I suggest a life sentence of KSM’s favorite activity. . . water boarding.
geckomon on February 11, 2008 at 1:59 PM
Hey Rosie, fire can melt KSM!
CP on February 11, 2008 at 1:59 PM
We are at the tip of hearing “Torture torture torture” especially when KSM is put on trial and waterboarding comes up.
The UN has aready called waterboarding torture and will attack these proceeding accordingly.
I really wish the GOP would Contrast how actively the dems fight FOR terrorist rights and how actively they fight to smear the troops.

Similar thought here…McCain could and should use his famous Maverick style and newfound Leader of the Republican Party status to show America a responsible way to use the bully pulpit.
RushBaby on February 11, 2008 at 2:20 PM
Dude. Never, ever use the terms “whacking” and “Rosie” in the same sentence never, ever again. I just threw up a bit in my mouth.
As for the jihadists…..let ‘em all fry.

Much as it is the right thing to do, I’m not sure the death penalty is in the best interests of the U.S. from a diplomatic standpoint.
Can you imagine the propoganda value these terrorists would have as marytrs to the cause? Rosie and the ACLU would give them the same victimhood status as Philadelphia cop-killers. Hammas would probably kill a bunch of Jews in retaliation. The UN would be aghast and pass a bunch resolutions expressing condemnation (in other words, same old routine). Killing these bastards would not deter others from attempting to kill Americans. It would enflame tensions with many nations. And it really doesn’t come close to bringing justice or closure to the families of the 9/11/01 victims.

All they need to do is write a children’s book, and they will be home free…. Why is Daddy a Jihadist will be a bestseller at all the usual places.

What is John McCain’s position on Trial By Military Tribunal? Didn’t he want to close Gitmo? How does Colin Powell feel about this? It’s time that everyone is on record before we pick a President.
kflynn on February 11, 2008 at 2:49 PM
I wonder how many (American) women have asked these guys to marry them.
Yes Bryan, thanks for the ‘good spew’ on the Rosie pic.
Christine on February 11, 2008 at 2:49 PM
Wiping Coke off my monitor…….:) The absolute funniest pic you’ve ever came up with!
I noticed at the presser many of the drive by’s seemed almost obsessed with where the information came from and if the ‘torture’ evidence would be allowed/used. Personally, I don’t care if they use ANY evidence at all…..it’s been 6 years for god’s sake! Let’s just move right along to the sentencing phase. It’s waaaay past time to get this over with.

I dunno but it looks to me like The Boosh administration is setting it’s affairs in order before they leave. Perhaps they’re getting ready to close Gitmo, just not the way the Libs had wanted to do it.

drjohn on February 11, 2008 at 3:13 PM
I’m not so sure if the death penalty is right in this case or not. I’d be happy with a life sentence without the possibility of parole. I’m not necessarily against the death penalty for them, I’m more concerned about what outcome is best for this country than what outcome is the worst for them.
Bottom line: I haven’t put enough pieces together yet to know which is best.

BirdEye on February 11, 2008 at 3:26 PM
It occurs to me that these terrorists are exactly the type of criminals that most people think it is ok to execute. Yet, there is still hope that the death penalty opponents make so much noise that the other issues get drowned out. We can make this happen!
I’m sending emails to Emma Bonino (email: bonino_e@camera.it
), Italian Member of the European Parliament and former European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, and the Transnational Radical Party(email: radical.party@radicalparty.org), urging them to take up the cause of these terrorists. These death penalty abolitionists won’t need very much encouragement. If anyone here has the time, I would urge you to show your support of terrorists by sending them emails or even letters arguing that the terrorists should not be executed. And though we are dealing with Italians, it’s ok to write them in English. They’ll be happy to get some anti-death penalty letters from Americans.
thuja on February 11, 2008 at 3:28 PM
So what? That’s the same argument as “We can’t invade Iraq, because that will just increase the number of Jihadis.” I would, however, like to see them executed by firinq squad and have it leak out after the fact that the bullets had been dipped in pig’s blood. That might give a few potential martyrs pause. Better yet, ship their bodies back to their home countries with a pig’s carcass in the body bag with them. I’m sure many of America’s pork producers would be happy to supply a carcass or two.
Kafir on February 11, 2008 at 3:30 PM
I am leaning this way as well. The feel good factor notwithstanding, the death penalty will bring little justice and may be a forgotten memory real quickly (I also thought Saddam Hussein left this world too quickly without suffering as long as he should have).
Let them die a less memorable death of old age devoid of freedom or any contact with any friends and family. Let them serve solitary confinement; anything but death.
Death is too good for them. Terrorist don’t fear death. They abhor western control, and what better punishment then to be incarcerated by the United States.
geckomon on February 11, 2008 at 3:32 PM
I hope to God they get the death penalty, and I hope it doesn’t take years to do.
4shoes on February 11, 2008 at 3:36 PM
I don’t agree with that analogy. Increasing jihadis is not my concern, nor do I care.
I think that when a person props up martyrdom as honorable, we should do our best to make sure that their wishes are not followed through.
We have specific persons that will be propped up as martyrs and I don’t want to give that satisfaction to the jihads. It would be a moral victory (I know, oxymoron)for them.
I’m also a fan of lifetime torture for these guys. Call me sadistic, but the satisfaction that they don’t have an “out” is my catalyst. The death penalty is like a “Get Out of Jail Free” card to them.

No kidding around guys, where did we put him?

Still laughing. Agreed, best Photoshop in the history of the medium. The technique is breathtaking.
DrSteve on February 11, 2008 at 4:25 PM
Ah, yes–we all know the spin that’s going to placed on this. Like today–a headline on Yahoo reads “High-profile Iraq bombings may be proof al-Qaida is regrouping.”
Maybe it’s desperation instead? Of course the MSM will never print that idea even if it collectively has the mental wattage to consider it.
My gut is that maybe these jokers/enemy combatants might need to be ’shot while trying to escape’. That would solve a lot of problems. But we Americans aren’t about that, unlike our enemy. And I’m comfortable with that.
Too bad for us the Dems/liberals/socialists/Rosies/Obamas/Clintons/McCains refuse to grasp the same hold.

whitetop on February 11, 2008 at 6:01 PM
Um… no, totally different things. The terrorists charged are completely under U.S control at Camp Delta. The trials will be military tribunals with US military officers presiding. The terrorists get the rights afforded military members (slightly different than civilian trials). Invading Iraq involved injecting ourselves in a sovereign nation.
This is merely giving lip service to human rights for the terrorists rights before we kill them (the internationalist view). Might be the right thing to do but could create long-term problems better solved by simply warehousing the terrorists for the rest of their lives. I’m not against the death penalty as a principle but simply saying I think that, in this case, it creates more problems than it solves.

You don’t want these guys to possibly end up as the focus of a plot to escape or as planners for another attack (who was that trollop lawyer who helped and was recently sentenced?).
The Rosie photoshop is a work of art. I’d frame it if it wasn’t so stomach turning.
