Chelsea breakfasts with 21-year-old “super delegate”

I won’t use the word that David Shuster and Keith Olbermann used because it was out of line and because I like my blogging privileges, but, uh, well, uh, just read the story.

Jason Rae is a typical junior in college.

He spends several hours a day in class at Marquette University in Wisconsin where he is majoring in history and political science. He is closely following the Marquette basketball team and has the Golden Eagles’ schedule memorized.

But not many 21-year-olds start their Monday with a personal breakfast with Chelsea Clinton, as Rae did this morning at the student union at the nearby University of Milwaukee.

Rae got the one-on-one treatment from the former — and possibly future — first daughter because he is a Democratic National Committee member from Wisconsin and thus a “super delegate,” one of the 796 free agents who can back any candidate in the race for the Democratic nomination.

The dude’s been getting pestered by pols on his phone too.

Rae has been called on his cell phone by former President Clinton and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright who tried to woo him to the Clinton side and Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, who was pushing for Rae to endorse Obama…

Former President Clinton called Rae on his cell phone, Jan. 25, the night before the South Carolina primary.

Rae was about to head out to dinner with friends when his phone rang and the screen said, “Number withheld.” The voice on the other end said: “Please hold for the former president” and then a familiar voice said “Hey Jason, it’s Bill here.”

“I started to think, is this real? I am a junior in college and Bill Clinton is talking to me?” Rae said as he recalled the phone call.

Rae says he won’t endorse until Feb 19 and will base his super delegate vote on electability. Which probably means that in spite of Chelsea’s breakfast and Elvis’ phone call, he’ll end up super delegating for Obama.

It’s not our fault she has the perfect face for radio.

Great. More and more reason every day not to read this blog. You people are pathetic.

MadisonConservative on February 11, 2008 at 5:07 PM

Furthermore, would you laugh at someone who said this about themselves??? It’s an old fracking joke!

She’s NOT a fracking kid anymore - she’s an adult. If she/you can’t handle the truth, vote Democrat!!!! She’s pimped out like all politicians’ children!!! MSNBC got something right before they got it wrong punishing the guy who MADE A PERSONAL OBSERVATION AND OPINION.

It’s call the first amendment. FIrst, like in, THE MOST IMPORTANT!!!

Dude.

Shew..sorry for yelling…

mksmithwriter on February 11, 2008 at 5:15 PM

I’m talking the original definition of Federalism! Yes, they were about money - but more about POWER and CONTROL - look it up.

Federalism by mean shared power between central and localized governments, but their is a philosophy on who is the ultimate authority!

mksmithwriter on February 11, 2008 at 5:10 PM

In modern usage- at least in the US- Federalism describes a belief in state’s rights and a weaker federal government, not stronger.

Hollowpoint on February 11, 2008 at 5:18 PM

Call me crazy, but Chelsea Clinton doesn’t look that bad. If her new look is the result of plastic surgery, then it was money well spent.

As for her campaigning, who cares? Clintons campaign. It’s what they do.

As a matter of fact, it’s ALL they do.

mksmithwriter on February 11, 2008 at 5:15 PM

Yes, you have the right to say whatever you want. With that comes the responsibility for what you say. What you are saying makes you look like an arrogant, ignorant jackass who is taking pleasure at potshots at a woman’s looks. This woman has done nothing but be born to two politicians most here don’t like. So far, most of the regulars here have magically been able to avoid insulting her for that sad state of affairs. You have not.

As I said, pathetic.

MadisonConservative on February 11, 2008 at 5:24 PM

You date it! I don’t want it.

I wonder what king of zinger the Clintons are working on now. I think everyone who comes to Hotair knows that a real doozy is on the way. I doubt it will work, but it’s fun to dive into the minds of Billary. My prediction: Barak the scientoligist

EOFLMAO!

He should just put the vote for sale on eBay. He’ll be able to live of the the money for decades!

TheBigOldDog on February 11, 2008 at 5:30 PM

First Hillary puts the fear of God into reporters and pundits so they wouldn’t dare say, “pimp.” Now she sends Chelsea on a mission that rubs their faces in it. I saw her on Sunday saying she had never been treated fairly by the media so maybe it’s just payback.

snaggletoothie on February 11, 2008 at 5:33 PM

See, Jason Rae’s smart enough to play it cool and let the politicians court him for an endorsement, rather than running out there to fall in line.

Conservatives could learn a thing or two there.

Wish I were a super delegate.

“Please hold for the former president…”
“Hey, buddy. It’s me, Bill.”
“Bill who?”
“Bill Clinton.”
” …dial tone…”

When I see a picture of Chelsea I have to avert my eyes but something makes me look at it again, weird huh?

MadisonConservative on February 11, 2008 at 5:24

That may be and I won’t argue that making fun of her looks are juvenile but so what. Chelsea has voluntarily injected herself into the media spotlight and with that comes criticism. She better get used to it. Not sure we won’t all happily get on board when she runs for the Senate.

Money well spent until she needs more because of aging. She will be more haggard than Cankles. As far as who cares, who cares if anyone says Chelsea was pimped out. No big deal. The entire point the reported was making is she is protected from questions yet the Clintons have pimped her out campaigning.

Anton on February 11, 2008 at 4:23 PM

Amen to that.

To the topic of this post, I find it extremely unappropriate that Hillary finds this type of activity OK for Chelsea, but not OK for Chelsea to answer the question of a nine year old reporter!

ITookTheRedPill on February 11, 2008 at 6:20 PM

unappropriate inappropriate

What is on the mind of most 21 year old males?

What exactly was the point of having Chelsea (not Hillary) contact this super delegate?

I say this with the utmost respect for you Bryan, but what the Hell did you expect to happen in the comments?

SouthernDem on February 11, 2008 at 6:38 PM

Hey, Chelsea is a perfectly respectable young woman. Unlike the Bush daughters, whose drunk antics and cavorting in South America caused embarrassment to the Bush administration, Chelsea kept her nose clean, graduated from Stanford, and has worked in the private sector ever since and has kept a low profile. Does she campaign for her parents, yes, and that does mean that she has placed herself into the public eye and that at least some criticism is warranted.

Unless and until she does something untoward, lay off the criticism. As for her looks, hey, I wouldn’t call her a 9 out of 10 on the “Hotornot” scale, but her looks have improved with age.

Nevermind…it would be too ponderous to explain. The rest of the esteemed assembly got it, I’m sure.

Second look at a beaten dead horse, anyone?

James on February 11, 2008 at 7:06 PM

Who gives a damn what Chelsea looks like?!?!

THE POINT is that she was SENT to meet with a 21 YEAR OLD, MALE college student for ONE reason only. Madeline Albright called the guy and so did Big Willy. Both struck out.

Sooooo……….someone says, “I know! Let’s get our 27 year old daughter to go get those delegates!!! Chelsea…be dear wiil you and pay a visit to this young man. You’ll be helping the team.”

Chelsea is a grown up and can decide whether she wants to play along or not. But I’ll bet she sees mummy and daddy a hell of a lot more now than she ever did as a child. NOW she is useful to them.

D’oh!!!!

Big John on February 11, 2008 at 8:42 PM

I think we are all focusing attention at the wrong tweenager here. So what if Chelsea is campaigning for Mom? It’s not like the GOP hasn’t elected a former President’s sons to two separate governorships and the White House, so I really can’t agree with the not-so-subtle implication that the child of politicians should stay out of politics. Besides, (unless the MSM is covering for her) she is setting a far better example of behavior than both of her parents-not to mention another certain famous young blonde.

What I want to know is this: How the blazes did a 21 year old college junior become a national political party’s Super Delegate? Seriously, this kid is in position to be one of the 796 most powerful people in the National Democratic Party, if the Not-so-super Delegates don’t give a solid decision between Obama and Clinton. How did this happen, and does anybody really think this is a good idea?

Lancer on February 11, 2008 at 8:53 PM

Didn’t she break the law going into the polls on election day??

Oh C’MON folks! Ok. You’re a 21 yr old college student. Who would YOU want to have breakfast with? A 27 yr old woman who can at least associate with you on a level playing field or a 60 yr old harridan who’d probably curdle the milk in your glass from 20 feet away?

Can the hatred already; like someone else said this place is starting to look like HuffPo what with all the negative comments. Slam Hillary or Billyboy, sure. They deserve it. BOY do they deserve it. But what has Chelsea done? Besides being a good daughter who wants her mother to be President? It’s not HER fault she was born to the devil.

wolfva on February 12, 2008 at 4:21 AM

AP News just had the “guy” who Bill and Chelsea were wooing on the news. Apparently Chelsea had nothing to worry about when she had breakfast with him. Clintons just trying to shore up the Gay Vote!

Dude.

mksmithwriter on February 11, 2008 at 5:00 PM

I don’t know if you’ve already ben called on this, but it is you who needs to “read up” on the meaning of Federalism in the United States. You have it ALL WRONG.

Please educate yourself, then an acknowledgeemnt of your misunderstanding would be appropriate.
