Vanity Fair: New Star Wars video game is so awesome, you’ll wet yourself

posted at 9:46 pm on February 8, 2008 by Allahpundit

Here’s how it’s going to go down. I’m going to pre-order it, pop it into the Xbox the minute the Amazon package comes, play it for 20 minutes — and then be so frustrated by the jumbo-jet-navigation complexity of the controls that I’ll never play it again.

But those are going to be the best 20 minutes of my life.

By the time the demonstration was over, I was left with the unmistakable sense that LucasArts was on the cutting edge of a huge leap forward for the video-game industry—a technological breakthrough, nearly as revolutionary as the introduction of sound in film, that could finally give gaming the kind of immersive realism that would enable it to join movies and television as a form of mainstream entertainment. The company has incorporated Euphoria and D.M.M. technologies into an ambitious video game called Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, which is scheduled to be released this summer. In addition to groundbreaking software, the game will employ Industrial Light & Magic’s facial-likeness technology and motion-capture expertise, which will give the digitally animated characters remarkably lifelike expressions and movements. And perhaps most important of all, the game has a compelling, movie-like story line, involving a secret apprentice to Darth Vader and the formation of the Rebel Alliance, which provides a visual and narrative transition between Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV—A New Hope. It is being billed as the “next great chapter” in George Lucas’s space saga, one that, according to the project’s art director, Matt Omernick, “aims to convince players that, ‘Oh my God, I’m actually, finally, in a Star Wars movie.’ ” And not only that: it will be a Star Wars movie with a life of its own…

The core idea was to take the concept of the Force and supersize it in a way that would appeal both to Star Wars video-game fans, who at this point have played a number of LucasArts games that involve the use of Force powers, and to gamers who may not be Star Wars fans but will gravitate to a game that offers big-bang escapism. Blackman’s team also wanted to put the Force in the hands of a character who was not bound by the Jedi code, which, as the movies drive home, attaches all kinds of guilt and moralizing to letting one’s freak Force fly. Not only would the Apprentice be able to wreak havoc with the Force in the game LucasArts planned, but, Blackman says, there would be “no real penalty” for doing so; instead, gamers would be able to explore the pleasures of “kicking someone’s ass with the Force.” Unleashed Force wielders would now be able to dismantle buildings and, at the height of their powers, pluck an Imperial star destroyer—those massive triangular spacecraft that are the Empire’s equivalent of an aircraft carrier—out of the heavens and crash it onto a planet’s surface.

Follow the link and scroll down about a quarter of the way to see what the Euphoria and DMM technologies they’ve got can do. They’re getting the guy who plays Chad Vader to do Darth Vader’s voice. Dude. Chad Vader. Dude.

Update: Dude.

The videos on gamespot just rock! I don’t like star wars games normally (except KOTOR) and this one looks so much fun.

lorien1973 on February 8, 2008 at 9:47 PM

. . . and then be so frustrated by the jumbo-jet-navigation complexity of the controls that I’ll never play it again.

Buy the Wii version then. It will have extra levels but not all the (overhyped) physics engines.

Nessuno on February 8, 2008 at 9:51 PM

I’m really looking forward to Fable 2. I need a new RPG :(

lorien1973 on February 8, 2008 at 9:54 PM

I’m so happy I could cry.

Wineaholic on February 8, 2008 at 9:55 PM

ugh…OK, there goes another 3 months of every minute of free time I have…I had to check that article quick to find out if *gasp* they made it for the PS3…and lo! They do. (I’ve been a Playstation fanboy for a long time…I just can’t switch to X-Box)

Funny, ’cause there’s only really two game series I absolutely HAVE to play the day they come out…Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, and GTA. Hitman is really good too.

JetBoy on February 8, 2008 at 10:00 PM

Pfft…consoles.

Where’s the PC version?

I still like this trailer, personally

Asher on February 8, 2008 at 10:07 PM

Vanity Fair is a credible source on video games now? That seems like taking Cosmopolitan’s opinion on anime seriously (or Newsweek’s on politics).

Personally I rarely go for the licensed stuff. Kotor was a pleasant surprise, but otherwise it’s usually junk.

I’ll stick to my RPGs.

Grayson on February 8, 2008 at 10:10 PM

Chad Vader singing Chocolate Rain was the greatest moment of 2007.

heh…Actually, I can’t believe people still play games like this on their computer. Just not the same.

And the only time I played WoW was with the free ten-day download…I just couldn’t get into it. A while back, Bryan posted about a new online game called Duels …it’s kinda like WoW “light”…but I’ve been hooked on it ever since.

This video may get me to purchase a new console.

Actually, to be more precise, this game will encourage me to start begging my wife to let me purchase a new console.

Slublog on February 8, 2008 at 10:27 PM

I’m sure the game will rock, but I also sure that they are grossly exaggerating how cool the DMM and Euphoria will be. I’m sure that after the 2nd or 3rd time a Storm Trooper grabs one of his buddies, it will become predictable, if not frustrating.

DaveS on February 8, 2008 at 10:28 PM

Duuuuuuuuuuude!!!!

This looks so sweet. If this is truely a 100% LucusArts game that would be awesome since its been almost 8 years since they actually made a great game.

Lance Murdock on February 8, 2008 at 10:33 PM

It is being billed as the “next great chapter” in George Lucas’s space saga

How are they gonna realistically deliver that? Are you able to use the Force in this game to choke the crap out of Jar-Jar and lay waste to entire Ewok villages?

‘…I’m actually, finally, in a Star Wars movie…’

“…that doesn’t suck massive amounts of ass like every one of these movies made since 1980!”

The last good game LucasArt’s made was Grim Fandango, which I think came out in 1998.
Buy Ninja Gaiden 2 instead of this people.

liquidflorian on February 8, 2008 at 10:38 PM

I think the different platforms are suited for different genres. Mouse and keyboard are great for shooters and RTS games, while a controller is best for action games, fighting games, and stuff like Mario.

Lance Murdock on February 8, 2008 at 10:41 PM

Man, they sure don’t make games like they use to.

For right now, I’m all about Super Smash Brothers Brawl

Star Wars will wait

Defector01 on February 8, 2008 at 10:48 PM

Lance Murdock on February 8, 2008 at 10:41 PM

Well, putting aside that I wasn’t that into Jedi Knight, I think it came out before Grim. I want to say 1997.

Chad Vader chats up Obama Girl.

No, really.

Anthony Perez-Miller on February 8, 2008 at 11:05 PM

Damn, what to get, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed or saving up for a new iMac.

Ceroth on February 8, 2008 at 11:07 PM

heh…Actually, I can’t believe people still play games like this on their computer. Just not the same.

And that’s a good thing. :)

I’d rather keybind if I need to and use my Fang gamepad. Otherwise I’m perfectly happy with a mouse and keyboard. Never could get into the gigantic console controllers with 4 joysticks and 8 buttons.

Orange Box…that’s available for PC. Crysis? PC. Unreal Tournament III? It’s on PC…and the framerate I get is ridiculous. But I built the system myself, so I got to pick and choose what I wanted. I would like to take a step up to the 8800GTX, but I think it’s overkill atm…but maybe in a few months when the price drops by half.

Oh, Starcraft II is coming out pretty soon…looking forward to that. But only on PC it appears.

Asher on February 8, 2008 at 11:13 PM

Looks like the made a character for this game that’s so absolutely baaaadass that he must die at the end. Otherwise, he’d kicked Luke’s ass, then Vader’s, then the Emperor’s scrawny behind.

HotAirExpert on February 9, 2008 at 2:06 AM

Lucas, historically, has apparently been against showing lightsabers cutting through people in his videogames, so until one of his games mimics the actual physics of what the hell happens when a beam of indestructible energy meets soft tissue, I will continue to be disappointed. I mean, C’MON! Hitting a Stormtrooper with your lightsaber blade and them reacting to it like it was a golf club? What a crock of sh*t.

JG2K6 on February 9, 2008 at 2:09 AM

I fear a drop in frame rate due to the dynamic AI.

There’s no way they had enough time to really optimize their code.

unamused on February 9, 2008 at 2:24 AM

I don’t even own a current-generation console, but if somebody can hack the texture maps so the stormtroopers look like Clinton, Pelosi, et al, I’ll buy two.

innominatus on February 9, 2008 at 2:52 AM

How come the Jedis in the films didn’t pull stunts like blowing 7 stormtroopers of a platform with a force-push? It’s sad that the games are out-doing Lucas’ films in terms of badassness.

Regarding this new Star Wars game, however, I’ll more than likely buy it because I like the new “technologies” these guys are talking about and the graphics look pretty amazing. Lucas Arts hasn’t put out a good Star Wars game since KOTOR and KOTORII, so I’m a little cautious on this one.

A part of me is wondering just how long this game will be if so much focus is being put into how it looks and the physics of the environment around you. That’s all cool and stuff but as I pointed out earlier, Mass Effect (ME) has set a new standard for storyline quality which has me coming back for more plus there’s going to be downloadable content (dlc) hopefully every few months to keep fans interested until the next game comes out in 2-3 years. I’ll probably check this game out but I’ve had a hard time playing anything else I’m so addicted to ME.

JohnW on February 9, 2008 at 11:19 AM

Speaking as a fellow gamer who has to control his own intake of games..

Wow! Why bother living in reality? Virtual reality is so much better. Not only do the non-player characters act and behave like real people but you can have superhuman godlike powers.

Why, you could enjoy yourself so much in this false reality, you could even wet yourself and sit in your own pee for hours and still be in complete bliss.

And you would never need to expose yourself to real problems with society like hunger, persecution and genocide. And better yet, if my character dies, he can simply regenerate from a previously saved location. Then when I have finished a mission I can convince myself what a good gamer I am and how I actually accomplished something while the rest of the world is falling apart.

Holy. Crap. Characters reaching out? Albino rancors? I might almost forget about the depressing political conventions that should be coming this summer.

Wineaholic on February 8, 2008 at 10:19 PM

Sorry to pick on you Wineaholic but your comment demonstrates perfectly what I’m talking about.

Video games already have an enormous number of addicts that are trying to recover. Games like this will only escalate the problem. This has all the promises of a religious cult.

I’m just venting something that I have been thinking while I’ve aged with video games from Pong, Space Invaders, Zork, Castle Wolfenstein(the 80′s original), Ultima, Warcraft, Doom, Quake, Half-Life, Halo, etc.

I cannot count the numbers of hours I have wasted in entertaining myself with this medium.

I love this “argument.” Somehow watching movies, sports, etc. are perfectly acceptable hobbies for an adult to have, yet playing video games is stupid and evidence of “not having a life.” Playing card games, gambling, or hell, even board games like Monopoly are perfectly fine too.
So basically, videos and games are mature and acceptable, but not video games?
Makes so much sense.

Grayson on February 9, 2008 at 1:34 AM

I believe all of entertainment venues could be taken to extremes but the major difference is that you can finish most of them in under an hour or in a night. Video games can require days if not weeks to complete. Not to mention the online multiplayer options.

I think I’ve finally had enough pseudo-reality.

shick on February 9, 2008 at 11:28 AM

Alalazoo on February 9, 2008 at 11:31 AM

Jose Chupacabra on February 8, 2008 at 11:55 PM

The video card of the X-Box is essentially outdated, but can still perform well enough. The 360 has 3 processors to handle all the various calculations needed for games. My only drawback to the Xbox is its lack of RAM, I think it only has 512MB. I should have had more and I think that would help with more complicated games.

In any event, the consoles are fine compared to desktops. I didn’t say they were better, but they compete fairly well.

I have been expecting this next level of physics and interaction from game engines for some time now. I doubt that despite the new features this game will allow you to perform, I highly doubt the physics behind it is anywhere close to being realistic. Perhaps in the next gen of consoles they’ll be able to do that.

So it’s this game and Rainbow 6: Las Vegas 2 that I await with anticipation.

ENOUGH WITH THE FEEKING JEDI!

Why can’t they come out with a good smuggler game. (Personally I’m all about the starfighter combat)

Seems more of a concept game. The AI/Physics engines should be the icing, not the cake.

Bah, if it isn’t an MMORPG it isn’t worth the time. I’m looking forward to StarGate Worlds.

E L Frederick (Sniper One) on February 9, 2008 at 7:49 AM

Must check out.

P.S. I’ll never forgive Lucas for selling SWG to Sony and I’ll never forgive Sony for what they did to it.

MirCat on February 9, 2008 at 1:28 PM

I have been expecting this next level of physics and interaction from game engines for some time now.

Weebork on February 9, 2008 at 1:23 PM

That’s one thing about the PS3 that I like so much…it’s advanced capabilities are far ahead of any games we have now…but give it a couple of years. I think the X-Box is going to need to be upgraded, whereas the PS3 is good to go for probably 10 years down the road.

JetBoy on February 9, 2008 at 1:30 PM

if you had triplehead2go you’d understand why we still play PC games…

pffft…. Consoles are for kiddies, how’s your thumb today?

pffft…. Consoles are for kiddies, how’s your thumb today?

Kaptain Amerika on February 9, 2008 at 1:38 PM

I still say, you don’t get the same “experience” from playing on a PC. And for the record, my thumb has endured literally 15 hours straight (GTA: San Andreas) with no soreness.

Plus, my 17″ lcd monitor is no match for a 50″ HDTV.

JetBoy on February 9, 2008 at 1:52 PM

After reading some of the comments, I want to say that I’m glad I still play video games. Now, I don’t play all the cool ones (mostly Civ and Sims 2), but geesh, it’s something to do. I’m married with kids, not living in my mom’s basement or anything.

Nothing like electronic violence to relieve some real-world stress, ya know?

the goddess anna on February 9, 2008 at 2:08 PM

Damn, what to get, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed or saving up for a new iMac.

Ceroth on February 8, 2008 at 11:07 PM

Answer: iMac. You will be using it long after you sell the game at a garage sale for fifty cents.

Guys, there are these things out there called women. Unplug your little consoles, shave, put on a clean shirt, loose the Star Wars lingo, and go out and get a few of them. Don’t worry there are plenty to go around. Besides, they are a little like video games in the sense that if you crash and burn with one (and you will), there is another one waiting (another “life” if you like). And scoring with one beats wacking Darth Vader any day of the week and twice on Sundays!

Besides, the best video game ever was ‘”Red Storm Rising” for the Commodore 64! Nothing can beat the thrill of pizza, Cheetos, and planting a few Harpoons right on the bridge of a Kirov class battlecruiser after evading a Russian SSN! Ah, graduate school! (Once the reaction is refluxing….what is there to do?)

Bubba Redneck on February 9, 2008 at 2:10 PM

Bah, if it isn’t an MMORPG it isn’t worth the time.

You realize that Bioware is working on a KOTOR MMO, right?

someone on February 9, 2008 at 2:50 PM

heh…Actually, I can’t believe people still play games like this on their computer. Just not the same.

Yeah. High resolution, mods that extend the game, precise controls, configurability, and a tool that can be used for more than just one thing. Hard to imagine.

Oh, and you can hook your PC up to a 50″ TV if you really want to.

I guess if you play video games 60 hours a week, it’s worth having a tool that does only that. I like video games, but they’re not a “lifestyle” for me.

Besides, game controllers are IMO not best for most kinds of games. If you’ve ever seen people with keyboard and mouse go up against people with controllers you know what I mean.

Merovign on February 9, 2008 at 2:55 PM

What is with people thinking because you play games you don’t have a gf or a life? I have a gf and a life. I just do not understand that attitude. I mean people could say the same thing about people who like sports or even people who spend way too much time on political blogs.

EnochCain on February 9, 2008 at 3:09 PM

heh…Actually, I can’t believe people still play games like this on their computer. Just not the same.

Yeah. Its waaaaay better. You really can’t compare a closed gaming system like a console with an open gaming system like a PC. You can aim a lot better with a mouse/keyboard than with a gamepad. You don’t have to throw out all your older games when you upgrade. Plus, you’ll never hook up a Thrustamster Cougar to a wussy little game box. And like Merovign said there’s tons of extra add on content you can’t get with a closed gameconsole system. Lucas Arts has to show the PC gamers some love, cause they’re the ones who kept LA going.
The PC version will probably (I hope I hope I hope)come out a little later, they did that with either KOTOR or KOTOR 2. Plus MS did that with Halo 2 and rumor has it Halo 3. If MS is smart they’ll ask LA to make it only for Vista. The entire world will upgrade.

Iblis on February 9, 2008 at 3:28 PM

Oh, and there is a massive thread on the LA forums begging for a PC release.

Just because one becomes an alcoholic it doesn’t mean everyone else is an alcoholic.
So you failed at time management and couldn’t control your addiction. Don’t assume everyone else has your same weakness.

…I’ll be in my bunk.

sulla on February 8, 2008 at 11:45 PM

Love the reference, but is it appropriate considering the topic of that episode, and the topic of this post? (You know, light sabers and all!)

geckomon on February 9, 2008 at 3:55 PM

At the risk of offending all the Hottie gamers.

Yawn

Kini on February 9, 2008 at 4:16 PM

AMEN on SOE.

They took a fun game (my husband was a Master Architect early on, I was a Droid Engineer), and ruined it. Except for Eve (which is massive and can be overwhelming), there are no good space MMOs. I keep praying for a Star Wars Galaxies miracle… *sigh*

I’ll pick a PC any day of the week over a console! My husband and I sit across from each other and can play without having to buy two special use units (consoles) hooked up to a TV that doesn’t run 1600×1200 @85hz. Great team playing TF2 that way. =)

Civilization, LoTRO, WoW, Crysis, UT, EVE, C&C… PCs and PC games ROCK.

(It’s nice to talk about a fun topic instead of a disappointing election season once in a while)!

linlithgow on February 9, 2008 at 8:58 PM

Pretty cool, but I perfer to direct my attention
to snuffing out the Germans in WW2 Call of Duty,
or Desert Storm Conflict, yup its old,but snuffing
out the Republican Guard is as much fun as well!

Grand Tursimo 5 is all I am waiting for…..on the PS3.

Nissan GTR here I come…:)

linlithgow on February 9, 2008 at 8:58 PM

They are making a Civ game for the 360.

EnochCain on February 9, 2008 at 10:00 PM

Does it make me a nerd or a normal person that I’ve only now seen “Episode 1″? And I still had to use the “Rifftrax” to do it (I don’t think I would’ve been able to suffer through it otherwise). Darth Vadar seems less menacing now that I know he’s a whiney little brat.

srhoades on February 11, 2008 at 8:54 AM

No intention to see the other two by the way. That cartoon rastafarian was too much!
