Video: John Bolton makes the case for McCain at CPAC

AmSpec’s blog has the run-down from Bolton’s CPAC speech today. I’ve seen some of the speech on video and Bolton makes a good case that we can’t depend on the wilderness and return storyline to re-capture the White House. Video here thanks to Allah.

Bolton said it was now clear that he would be the nominee, and specifically addressed those who argue that conservatives would be better off in the long run if Democrats win and mess things up than if mistakes are associated with a Republican. He compared this logic to Vladimir Lenin’s declaration that “worse is better” and said that “tactical domestic considerations” shouldn’t be allowed to harm our national security.

If the choice is between a view supported by John Bolton, a man who has been in the arena and fought the fights with his own fists, and a view supported by Ann Coulter, well, Bolton’s view is probably the one that will ultimately win out.

Sam Stein says Bolton is batting for McCain in the hope that McCain wins and names him SecState. No way. Bolton cares about the war and national security and wants to see America protected from jihadists. Bolton knows that neither of the Democrat contenders get it. He sees McCain as the superior choice. Bolton also knows that there’s no way he could get through the Democrat Senate and be confirmed as SecState. Sometimes a tree is just a tree, folks.

That said, we *must* consider the alternatives. Obama & Clinton are singing the same chorus about pulling troops out of Iraq before the job is done. I know Clinton’s been strong on the war in the past, but now she’s playing true-to-form & basing her decision on the basis of Democrat polls.

The lives of American troops are at stake. Is casting a vote of conscience for a 3rd party candidate (who’d be sure to lose) worth the loss of American blood because of the carnage that would accompany the current Democrat war strategy?

Tim

So, Tim. We agree and disagree.

funky chicken has actually called me correctly; except it isn’t “lives”, just the war in Iraq. Being a bit dishonest there for shock value, but generally accurate.

If you come to me today and give me the following choice, I know how I’d make it.

Presume an evil Genie give you the following two choices for the world; and you must pick one.

1) Pull the troops out of Iraq.

2) Elect a President with no respect for the Constitution who will also immediately remove the Fist Amendment.

America can lose the war in Iraq and survive. I’m not as convinced that America can lose personal freedoms and survive.

So, I have to choose the “lesser of two evils”? Fine, but that ain’t McCain.

I’d like to have a candidate who would finish the win in Iraq, and protect Constitutional rights. I really would love that option. But it isn’t on the table anymore.

For some reason a majority of Republicans voting in the Primary have opted to give me the above choice. I’ll admit I feel sick about both options, but I’ve not seen anything that will switch my opinion of the “lesser evil” so far.

This is the first time in my life the Republicans have actually run the “worst” candidate; not just crappy, but worst.

If I’m wrong, how much of the Constitution are you willing to flush forever to save Iraq? How willing are you to have a precedent on the books for flushing more of the Constitution in the future to save Iraq? Oh, and what will America look like in 50 years if we set a precedent now of ignoring individual freedoms as a nation?

Now, funky chicken doesn’t give a damn about the Constitution if we can hold out on the War in Iraq. Somehow I think that’s a bit shortsighted; but he feels that the current war footing of America is more important than what America is. He’d let us be Nazi Germany tomorrow if we could simply win wars. (See, I can do over the top, exaggerations for shock value too)

We’re damned well going to lose something in the next few years. Either the War in Iraq, or the First Amendment of the Constitution (and a path to losing the rest of it).

I’m sorry we’re on different sides here, but losing Vietnam didn’t permanently cripple the nation (yes, it had a lasting effect, but it’s ebbing). However the New Deal, and it’s view of the Commerce Clause has made a considerably more huge difference in the scope and actions of the Federal Government, and where we are as a nation. And that change and the loss of the Constitutional rights that went with it haven’t subsided, but have increased.

So yes funky chicken, I believe that politics is more important than the war in Iraq (not quite what you said, but close).

You can disagree if you want, but I think keeping America as the “land of the free, home of the brave” is important.

Of all the people who might convince me to vote for McCain, I must say that Bolton would be at the top of my list. (Funky Chicken and THE CHOSEN ONE would be at the bottom, under the snakes under a rock.) I completely trust Bolton’s conservative credentials.

Still – out with JUan Hernandez and name a conservative as VP first !!!

stenwin77 on February 9, 2008 at 10:14 AM

McCain is well aware of the conservative opinion of Mexico-first Hernandez and Hernandez is still proudly waving the red and green for McCain. McCain also has campaign honcho Rudman, the guy who pitched Souter for the Supreme Court

I still can’t figure how that sack of excrement got the nomination. I don’t care how much rationalizing I hear, I’m not voting for John Feingold-Kennedy-Hernandez NcCain.
Period.

He got it by having two buddies run as controlled-borders candidates and then hand him their votes. Then there is Huck, who seems to be an independent open borders Christian progressive candidate posing as a closed-borders Christian progressive candidate to get Christian votes and give them to McCain so Romney can’t have them.

McCain was the only overtly open borders candidate so the conservative vote scattered to the others and was handed back. Cheesy, sleazy and it worked

It lost me my trust in Fred for VP

These spoilers would rather McCain run and lose the election (and he will lose) than have Romney run, and possibly win control of the party. Even if McCain loses (and he will) the party will be purged of those who will not eat it and obey

This does not bode well for the GOP as a conservative party

Sadly, the big guys need cheap labor and non-conservative voters, because conservative voters will not support imported labor

To facilitate imported labor, the GOP must change from conservative, to moderate, and promote non-assimilation and amnesty to win the votes of the enfranchised imported laborers

While it is obvious the DEM party is more attractive to illegals, the moderates controlling the GOP do not care because they are facing an economic slide and will do anything to stop conservatives from closing the borders and ruining their portfolios

Well, said, Bolton!
It’s the Dems that are supposed to follow Lenin’s cues, not Republicans.
