Geraldo to Mitt Romney on immigration: “We sort of all look alike”

posted at 10:45 am on February 8, 2008 by Allahpundit

One of this tool’s few virtues is his willingness to frame identity politics in the crudest and thus most revealing terms, even to the point of using rhetoric that would get a conservative fired. (And rightly so.) Lots of e-mails coming in about this snippet from Fox & Friends this morning, in which our hero recalls Mitt Romney trying to explain to him the difference between legal and illegal immigration while he zones out into a daydream about People Who Have Mustaches versus People Who Don’t. The dirty truth about the general election is that neither side will be spending much time on immigration; the dirty truth about the primary is that McCain won as much on character as on the issues, be they Iraq or the amnesty posture from which he’s been inching away since summer. Geraldo conveniently overlooks that tack to the right by McCain here in making his case that border enforcement is a losing issue, but then he conveniently overlooks a lot of things. Take it away, Krikorian.

Geraldo is just a shill for MS-13/The Iluminatti.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 8, 2008 at 10:52 AM

Why in the world Fox still lets this idiot on is beyond me.

Luckedout on February 8, 2008 at 10:53 AM

Good greif the man is clueless or more accurately such a shrill for his POV that he ignores facts. That isnt a conservative thats a liberal

This is why Romney lost

William Amos on February 8, 2008 at 10:53 AM

Did Geraldo say that he told Mitt that his rhetoric was “troubling a lot of Spanish people” and later mention that “Spanish people are getting angry with it”? I wasn’t aware there was a large Spanish population in this country. I thought they were all in…. ya know… Spain.

And Geraldo, you’ve really got to stop this “mustache’s like mine” act. You’ve been on this thing for a month. First of all, very few people have had a mustache “like” yours for the last hundred years. Second of all, you’re just a disgusting player of race cards.

RightWinged on February 8, 2008 at 10:56 AM

How is claiming that the Latino voting bloc is single-handedly deciding the outcome of this nomination process (and possibly the general election as well) supposed to calm those people Geraldo thinks of as xenophobes, nativists, and anti-Hispanic bigots? Seems to me that it’s likely to polarize such voters even more on the immigration issue. He’s confirming for them that there’s a reason to feel threatened by Latinos as a monolithic voting group that will grow exponentially when amnesty is granted.

aero on February 8, 2008 at 10:58 AM

Geraldo is a parody of himself.

amkun on February 8, 2008 at 10:58 AM

I mean, how dare he lie like this? Latinos are magnetized to the Tancredoite wing. Republicans’ share of the latino vote has increased steadily since the issue was pushed to the fore.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 8, 2008 at 10:59 AM

Imagine Martin Luther King Jr. saying, ‘well, we all sort of look alike’.

Geraldo is trying to take credit for ‘warning’ Romney and saying that he lost because he turned off NON-CITIZENS who can’t vote.

What the G man and his ilk STILL don’t get is that IT ISN’T ABOUT THEM. It’s not about Mexicans, or Cubans, or Latinos for that matter. It’s about the federal government promising to spend OUR tax money on social programs for these people when they can’t find the money for the CITIZENS of all races and nationalities.

Why is it that Geraldo doesn’t recognize the STRAIN that it puts on local jurisdictions from schools and police to hospitals. Does Geraldo think that NO city planning should be put in place because it will all be blown out of the water by new illegal aliens burdening the local population?

City plans are in place based on normal growth. Based on taxes that are brought in by LEGAL residents.

We don’t ‘hate’ as Geraldo likes to think. We LOVE America and would like for it to be around for our grandkids. We would like to have a country that didn’t cost our kids so much to bail us out of the fiscal mess that we put them in.

WE NEED TO CONTROL THE BORDER. Then set up a temporary work program. The argument about citizenship vs. no citizenship boils down to one thing and one thing only – ENTITLEMENT PROGRAMS. They get everything regular citizens get except ENTITLEMENT PROGRAMS. As soon as they become citizens the only thing that will change is that the American Taxpayer has taken on another huge burden that it can’t afford thanks to the people in DC who love to spend other people’s money and take credit for doing ‘good’ with other people’s money.

ThackerAgency on February 8, 2008 at 11:00 AM

Exit question: what if Romney had a tan and a mustache like Geraldo’s? Would it have played out differently? I’m thinking that they would have whaled on a piñata together like old friends.

Mark Jaquith on February 8, 2008 at 11:00 AM

Geraldo played that “We all look alike” to again smear those that question illegal immigration as racists.

Again what race is an illegal immigrant ? As far as I know they arent any one race. Just that the majority of them come from one area of the world.

Again harryweirdo if you really care about hispanic people why arent you in Mexico working to make things better for people there ? If borders dont matter than your being racist by staying in the US while ignoring your brothers south of the border.

RightWinged on February 8, 2008 at 11:03 AM

What a moron. Including those he described that voted in the method he mentions. Hispanic voters who think that enforcing illegal immigration law breakers is akin to racism is just ignorant. They allow people like Geraldo to keep hitting them over the head with the Stupid Stick.

Full Disclosure, my first, last and middle name (mom’s maiden) is hispanic. I’m by no way threatened, offended or feel the outrage that Geraldo describes. I’m not stupid.

geckomon on February 8, 2008 at 11:03 AM

Further, there’s no such thing as racism, and even if there were, the last place it would be found is amongst border enforcment advocates.

The real racists are people like Juan Hernandez.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 8, 2008 at 11:04 AM

I saw this this morning. Geraldo was arrogantly warning that McCain just BETTER not tack to the right on this issue b/c he will lose the hispanic vote and then will lose the election.

Then Geraldo goes on to say that he was talking to Mitt about this issue on O’Reilly and Mitt told him his only concern was with ILLEGAL immigrants. To which the always rational Geraldo replied “we all look alike.” I had to turn the channel. Am I wrong to think that criminals who look like me should not get a pass? Am I missing something?

hollygolightly on February 8, 2008 at 11:04 AM

Does this tool even believe what he’s saying? He’s either hopelessly out of touch with reality or a dishonest tool. I’m not entirely sure which, though it’s probably a bit of both- mostly the former.

Agree 100%. If people put the energy and money that it takes to come across a border (or an ocean) to get her and used it to make their own countries better, nobody would be risking their lives to try to get here.

melda on February 8, 2008 at 11:10 AM

Geraldo is so full of himself. Like he speaks for all Latinos? They didn’t vote for him because he said he was going to crack down on illegal immigrants. They voted for McCain because he’s going to give illegals a free pass. I worked in Fla in 06 and there were places in the south where no one spoke english. That’s what we’re in for people.
McCain’s in and if he gets elected, immigration is going to explode in this country.
It’s offensive to me that he plays the race card every chance he gets and then decries racism. Putz.

Geronimo on February 8, 2008 at 11:12 AM

Allahpundit on February 8, 2008 at 11:01 AM

Dissaproving of Geraldo’s moronic rhetoric has been a forgone matter since ‘82.

The idea that border enforcemnet advocates don’t even have to aknowlege the racists tangled up in their pet issue is the nonsense I’m trying to address.

It’s just too bad that 40 years of “capitalism = racism” and “federalism = racism” nonsense from the left has carved out a huge blind spot in which actual racism and racist interests can hide themselves from conservatives.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 8, 2008 at 11:12 AM

Has anyone brought up the fact that some people (not exclusively Latinos) come here to escape their neighbors. IE MS13 and like one guy I was talking to who moved here from France (he was even wearing an American flag tee-shirt at the time if you can believe it) those that are rioting nightly.

MirCat on February 8, 2008 at 11:13 AM

One Juan Hernandez trumps fifty hispanic outreach Latino advisors apparently.

Geronimo on February 8, 2008 at 11:13 AM

All lawbreakers do look alike.

Like a symptom of a system that has lost its will to survive.

Without secure borders you have no nation.

Just disintegration.

profitsbeard on February 8, 2008 at 11:16 AM

Some Geraldo quotes from the video:

“The tone of your ANTI-IMMIGRATION rhetoric…”

“Why would people vote for someone that is insulting people that look like me…”

He is so irrelevant, I can’t understand why he gets airtime to promote his overly emotional attachment to his machismo. He refuses to listen to counterpoint and refuses to acknowledge that these visitors are committing a crime. What is his stance on the 60+ Americans kidnapped from Laredo? What is his stance on border violence and armed attacks on our police and border guards?

Hypocrite.

cannonball on February 8, 2008 at 11:16 AM

melda

Why bother when you can simply walk across the border and have the US government pay for all your needs? Medical, school, food, shelter … who could ask for anything more?

In the meantime … the problems they supposedly left in their own countries are simply brought here. They’re remaking areas they settle in into mini-versions of the places they left. Only difference is the taxpayers fund their existence.

Bloodshed will be inevitable in the future as groups compete for a bigger share of the pie and control of the government. That is, unless Yellowstone erupts. In that case, it’s every man for himself.

How cleaver that the open borders people have to hide their message behind racism rather than fight over the validity of the issue

William Amos on February 8, 2008 at 11:09 AM

Funny thing is, I’ve never said “open borders” or “deport them all”.

In fact, it’s the “deport them all, deport them now” people who have defined the issue, and defined it so that any attempt to reconcile “deport them all, deport them now” to reality is the equivalent of “open borders”.

So don’t blame everyone outside of the narrow band of “deport them all, deport them now” when they go looking for explainations for such unreasoning zeal.

And when it comes up that immigration has become the same open, inviting sore for the right as the antiwar/anti-zionism issue is for the left with regard to David Dukies and nazis, it’s not the fault of those pointing it out.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 8, 2008 at 11:22 AM

The idea that border enforcemnet advocates don’t even have to aknowlege the racists tangled up in their pet issue is the nonsense I’m trying to address.

Nonesense there are demogoges on any side of any issue. To paint everyone on either side is unfair but its the open borders people who play that tired game more than the other side. We condem those that are racist but then to use the race card to shut down any debate like Geraldo and others do is obnoxious and unfair and no different than the racism they decry.

I have told this a few times. When Geraldo was in Iraq, he visited my nephews unit. They spent the whole time laughing at Geraldo behind his back. They, to the man, felt he was the most pathetic “news” person they had ever met. He considers it one of his highlights, like a sitcom from MASH. The guy is a joke.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 8, 2008 at 11:39 AM

Well Jerry Rivers should be VERY happy about now. The congress apparently passed the 168 billion dollar stimilus package yesterday. That mean that billions, BILLIONS are going to mexico to stimulate them. They’re probably dancing in the streets as this is written. How nice for Jerry and his reltives. He should be thankful. Being a lawyer Jerry should be able to swindle at least some of the money, somehow, from the illegals. I’m sure he’s always willing to lie to and cheat and steal from his illegal friends and relatives.

I really don’t get what Geraldo is talking about with the mustache thing. I haven’t seen anyone (except Bolton) where a mustache like that. My hometown even has a large hispanic population (although it is a small town), and growing up I never saw anyone grow that kind of mustache.

p40tiger on February 8, 2008 at 11:40 AM

I don’t understand how Geraldo Rivera can be an expert on Scott and Lacey Peterson, Stacy Peterson, Paris Hilton, Brittany Spears, Princess Diana and ALSO on the Republican presidential battle. His assertion that immigration was a big issue in the primaries is ludicrous. The key battles were in Iowa and New Hampshire, states where there is not an immigration crisis. Romney’s goose was cooked after those two states. I tuned out Rivera after he said that he would “spit in Michelle Malkin’s face” if he saw her. That kind of vile behavior shows what a schoolyard bully Geraldo is.
On the related subject of John McCain, some of the stuff said about John McCain is also beyond the bounds of acceptable conduct. His political views are fair game. But John McCain and all of his fellow POWS made personal sacrifices that the rest of us will never fully understand. What these men endured is something that they alone fully understand. So personal invective should never be directed at anyone who was a POW. And I say this as someone who would love to see JC Watts as the Republican candidate for president. He could win!

Yep, everytime a conservative loses anything, it’s because on his stance on illegal aliens. I wonder who Geralso thinks he’s talking to? Does he think whenever he speaks for open borders, someone will all of a sudden vote for a Democrat instead of a Republican?

There are many more conservative and moderate votes against illegal aliens (75+% of the country) (Geraldo can’t explain that one) then there are hispanic votes. I hope that McCain remembers that during the next 9 month of campaiging. It is a losing issue. Any candidate supporting open borders will certainly lose.

At times I have actually liked this man’s unique take on things, but every time I find myself liking him (good during OJ et al), I remind myself of how he helped the Clinton’s shift the debate on Bill’s perjury and serial sexual abuse to a debate about “sex and privacy”, which was appalling. Geraldo has a nasty habit of equating a love for legal immigration with “racism” and truth-telling whistleblowers with “snitches.” Every time he opens his mouth he reveals just how illogical and anti-intellectual he really is.

Ultimately, he’s just a bully and a street thug with a microphone.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 8, 2008 at 12:47 PM

Every time he opens his mouth he reveals just how illogical and anti-intellectual he really is.

Gartrip on February 8, 2008 at 12:21 PM

Thank you! Therein lies the truth about most liberal pundits. Any and all attempts to infuse intellect and logic into discussions results in name calling and personal attacks. I have adopted a very straight forward tactic when accusations of racism, sexism (or any *ism) are bestowed upon me….I agree! People that use emotional perspectives inorder to intimidate and invoke guilt are not worth engaging.

dmann on February 8, 2008 at 12:57 PM

Hey Geraldo! Spanish != “Hispanic”. The Spanish are in fact *gasp* white Europeans!!! Oh, the humanity!

madne0 on February 8, 2008 at 1:30 PM

Why exactly are you posting links to white supremacist/9/11 Truther websites?

RightWinged on February 8, 2008 at 11:24 AM

Because Butt Von Poops is a troll.

All “open borders” advocates ought to be required to remove the locks from their car doors and house/apartment doors to prove that they genuinely believe what they are advocating for all of us.

And they’re not allowed to complain when someone comes in and empties the refrigerator: they have to just shut up and restock it using their own money.

Now that we whites are a minority, can we finally set up the NAAWP and the Congressional white caucas? Or, does the Government assume, that no matter what, the whities will always come out OK. If so, it looks like the government only cares about the racial groups that historically have a hard time competing in this economy.

I look at the current candidates, and I don’t see a person there that cares a hoot about the small businessman. They always put the illegal immigrants ahead of the tax paying American people.

And McCain wants my vote? So solly. As the tail wags the dog.

saiga on February 8, 2008 at 1:34 PM

Geraldo is a racist, plain and simple.

He’s un-American.

He’s a traitor.

He needs to be deported.

How vocal would he be then?

madmonkphotog on February 8, 2008 at 1:38 PM

How about the “Legal Citizens Council” or the “American Taxwagon Pullers Assn”. Maybe the “Pay to Play in the USA Union”. What about the people that make up the engine of our economy. I guess our time is past, and the era of rewarding liars (living a lie), cheaters (violate our laws) , and thieves (steal our identity)is about to be upon us.

Thanks mcCain for your good judgement on immigration reform.

I stopped watching Bill O. because this POS keeps showing up.

I’ve pretty much done the same. B.O. is softened up, especially with the nuts.

madmonkphotog on February 8, 2008 at 2:15 PM

The look on Geraldo’s face reminds me of the constipated mathematician who worked out his problem with a pencil.
Illegals are Geraldo’s dry turd, he needs to work it out.
Everybody send him a pencil.

leanright on February 8, 2008 at 2:40 PM

The ’stache speaks.

What a joke.

There’s just no debating or reasoning with this guy.

Hawkins1701 on February 8, 2008 at 2:57 PM

Stache’s we dond need no stinkin stache’s.

Giggle.

m0nkeyb0y on February 8, 2008 at 3:13 PM

Instead of 45 “spanish” people on his Florida committee, Romney should have employed all 20 million illegals. The only first one to be deported should be Geraldo.
