Why not…throw the Democrats a curveball by putting a woman or minority on the ticket to take some of the edge off the nominee on the other side?

Amen. We need to save the Congress, because it’s not going to be smooth sailing for the next four years. It’s going to be an all-out battle, and the sooner we’re ready, the better.

P.S. No McCain, not ever. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If he wants for president of Mexico, then he’s got my support. Otherwise, never.

I`ve never understood the anti-Mormon issue. Are people afraid he`ll force convert people to his faith? Did he try that in Mass? How did that work out?

Actually, Mormons are quite agressive about proselytizing. Its one of the reasons they are disliked by many other Christian denominations.

Romney did his missionary work in France, so it’s not likely he got too many people to convert to a religion that forbids coffee, cigarettes, and booze.

Sudden and unlikely? People were speculating over whether he’d drop out before the final Super Tuesday votes were even counted because it was pretty clear that he couldn’t win on delegates.

His only chance would’ve been to drag things out till the Sept convention and hope a brokered convention fight led to his nomination- unlikely in itself, and badly crippling the chances for a Republican win in November as a result.

Romney said in the aftermath of black Tuesday that he’d fight all the way to the convention. He also sent out a message that even if Huckabee won all the remaining delegates, he’d still come up short of the required number. Then there was the bid to get Huckabee to drop out so as to avoid splitting further the conservative vote. Looked to me like he was still in it.

I would like to see Steele for VP. I have been a big fan of Steele since his run for the senate. I think he will be a player in GOP politics over the next few cycles. Looking back I wish he would have run this time.

Republican presidents appointed Clarence Thomas for SCOTUS and Colin Powell and Condi Rice for SecState and Rod Paige as Sec of Education and what kind of effect did that have on minority voters?

Not to belabor the point – since I agree with your specific argument on tokenism or its appearance – but prying the African American voting bloc from the clutches of the Dems won’t take place as a result of any one, two, three, of fifty gestures. If and when it occurred – the point that blacks start voting R at anywhere near the rate that the rest of the population does – it would likely be in the aftermath of one or more tipping point events against the background of general cultural, social, and economic evolution. Before that could happen, the foundations of the Dem monopoly will have to have taken place beneath the surface – and Condi, Powell, and Thomas all will have helped in the process, along with many lesser names.

The Mormon thing is still sadly an issue, too.

Why sadly? What is wrong with voters weighing a candidate’s beliefs in their decision? Especially when those beliefs border on being a cult.

Would you vote for a President who believed in Scientology? Aum Shinrikyo? Militant Islam?

Our constitution provides freedom of religion, but it doesn’t require people to vote for candidates regardless of whether they find their religious beliefs nutty or offensive.
