Open thread: McCain’s moment of truth; Update: CPAC audience stuffed with McCain supporters?

posted at 3:20 pm on February 7, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Coburn’s giving him a blowout right-wing intro. He’s on imminently. Stand by.

Update: Mostly cheers as he walks out.

Update: Boos at 3:34 as illegal immigration is mentioned, followed by cheers from his supporters to drown them out.

Update: Lots of cheers as it ends. Either he won them over or the CPAC organizers made sure to have lots of Maverick supporters in the crowd to prevent any golden moments for the Democrats.

Update: Here’s the text. Red meat galore.

Update: MKH and Geraghty liked it, Hugh Hewitt and Geraghty’s readers loved it.

Update: See my earlier update about crowd theories. We may have our answer:

We’re told from a reliable source on the ground at CPAC: “They stuffed the main room with McCain supporters. But the overflow room booed him heartily, cheered when Romney was mentioned, booed when McCain said he hopes we forgive his absence from CPAC in the past.”

Update: Even McCain-hater Tammy Bruce finds herself impressed.

Who cares?

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 5:36 PM

myamphibian,

Strike a chord did I? I did not realize that disagreeing with McCain obligates his followers to resort to cheat attacks.

Sen McCain’s credibility on illegal immigration is a valid point. While he did acknowledge that there are disagreements between he and conservatives, “admitting” or believing that the vast majority of the country rejected his immigration bill because they lost their faith in government is a mistake. A bad bill is sometimes just a bad bill, as I’ve mentioned before.

But I guess I’m not grounded in reality enough to know that.

Cheap.

Weebork on February 7, 2008 at 5:40 PM

Regarding McCain’s citizenship, here’s a pretty good breakdown of why it’s a valid question in terms of how the Constitution is worded and how being born in the Panama Canal Zone figures into that. Boiled down, the PCZ was not, in fact, a U.S. territory as most people believe–it was a land-lease. But the Naturalization Law of 1790 seems to clarify the issue in stating that the child of two U.S. citizens, born outside the U.S. should be considered a natural born citizen. I think it won’t be a problem, but I do hope McCain has hired some lawyers to make darn sure it’s not an issue before he accepts our nomination.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 5:33 PM

Go peddle it somewhere else. Your arrogance and sly references to racist hysteria as the reason for opposition to shamnesty are classic McCainite.

a capella on February 7, 2008 at 5:43 PM

So you believe that Reagan’s legacy was in slandering his opponents?

Esthier on February 7, 2008 at 5:05 PM

You seriously have the stones to try to invoke the 11th commandment against one of McCain’s defenders?

I now know everything about you that I need to know. Idiot.

Zetterson on February 7, 2008 at 5:06 PM

And clearly I’ve said all that needs to be said aboout you.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 5:44 PM

Regardless why did you feel the need to make the issue about me? Disagree with me fine, but making me the issue tells me your position is weak.

Of course, you could also just chose to ignore me.

But it’s hard to resist because of my extreme level of humility. I am one very humble guy.

Weebork on February 7, 2008 at 5:44 PM

What good is it to pretend there’s any chance at persuading any of you?

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 5:33 PM

So you’re just having some sport calling other commenters “racist”. You’re a true conservative.

jaime on February 7, 2008 at 5:45 PM

Weeb, accusing McCain of trying to fool someone is not the same as simply disagreeing. You may not believe it, which is fine, but to assign intentions on his or anyone elses behalf is never honorable. I stand by my statement with all due respect.

myamphibian on February 7, 2008 at 5:46 PM

Who cares?

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 5:36 PM

Go take a good look at the Dem base turnout vs the GOP in the primaries, then get back to us. You seem intent on widening that gap for the general. Congratulations.

a capella on February 7, 2008 at 5:48 PM

jaime on February 7, 2008 at 5:45 PM

Obviously not. If I were a “true conservative” I’d be very concerned that “illegals” were overbreeding criminals who are tracking leprosy all over the country. Perhaps, concious of how classically racist that sounds, I might add some nonsence about the 9-11 hijhackers having snuck in accross El Norte.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 5:50 PM

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 5:44 PM

You just painted the vast majority of conservatives as racists and claimed we were the ones making Reagan look bad.

If you’re living in a glass house, refrain from throwing stones.

Your arrogance and sly references to racist hysteria as the reason for opposition to shamnesty are classic McCainite.

a capella on February 7, 2008 at 5:43 PM

And they’re exactly the reason McCain could lose in the general election.

Esthier on February 7, 2008 at 5:50 PM

a capella on February 7, 2008 at 5:48 PM

did you vote?

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 5:51 PM

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 5:50 PM

And now you’re just showing your ignorance of the entire issue or else making a strawman. Either way you’re proving yourself of no consequence in the conversation of illegal immigration.

Esthier on February 7, 2008 at 5:53 PM

Myamphibian,

Ah yes, because the word “either” is meaningless in the English language. So when I say, either Sen McCain is misguided or he is disingenuous about his explanation for why his immigration bill. What other way can it be if it isn’t the former?

Again, making me the issue is the sign of a weak argument.

By the way, selective reading is not such a good idea either as well.

Weebork on February 7, 2008 at 5:54 PM

You just painted the vast majority of conservatives as racists…

Many are. Too many. Many more are innocent. If that’s what I see, I’m supposed to shut up about it?

…and claimed we were the ones making Reagan look bad.

They are.

If you’re living in a glass house, refrain from throwing stones.

Again, I have to hear this lecture from the “Better Red Than McShamnesty” mafia?

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 5:57 PM

If I were a “true conservative” I’d be very concerned that “illegals” were overbreeding criminals who are tracking leprosy all over the country. Perhaps, concious of how classically racist that sounds, I might add some nonsence about the 9-11 hijhackers having snuck in accross El Norte.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 5:50 PM

Thanks for pretending to define what my arguments are. But no thanks. I prefer to make my own arguments.

So lets see… calling people racist, telling them what their arguments are… classic liberal. You’re exactly the sort of McCain supporter we all expected. Poopy-Butt (that’s what your name means, isn’t it?), the prototypical McCain supporter.

jaime on February 7, 2008 at 6:00 PM

Many are. Too many. Many more are innocent. If that’s what I see, I’m supposed to shut up about it?

Again, you’re speaking from a position of ignorance, likely willfully.

There are racists who want Mexicans deported. I won’t deny that.

However, it is completely inaccurate to even pretend that those people make up any significant portion of those who want our laws enforced.

They are.

Reagan’s plan included reducing illegal immigration, not making legal immigrants the minority of those who immigrate here.

Again, I have to hear this lecture from the “Better Red Than McShamnesty” mafia?

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 5:57 PM

No, you’re free to come and go as you please. It’s still a free country. Listen to me or don’t, but assuming that we’ll bow down to your arguments after you call us racists and remind us of the 11th commandment which you’d only moments ago broken is the height of naivety.

Esthier on February 7, 2008 at 6:09 PM

Hiney Backside and McCain have convinced me of one thing for sure. The rest of my political contributions this year are going to Numbers USA.

maxine on February 7, 2008 at 6:20 PM

Obviously not. If I were a “true conservative” I’d be very concerned that “illegals” were overbreeding criminals who are tracking leprosy all over the country. Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 5:50 PM

You are right man. If Mexico was full of poor whites invading our culture I would be 100% behind amnesty. It is really that simple…really.

ClassicCon on February 7, 2008 at 6:23 PM

The majority of people at CPAC used applause to drown out the pathetic boos and hisses of a small minority of a few classless attendees.

JayHaw Phrenzie on February 7, 2008 at 3:37 PM

They stacked the room with McLiar whores like yourself who have no conservative values.

csdeven on February 7, 2008 at 6:25 PM

“I will make the Bush taxcuts permanent.”
JayHaw Phrenzie on February 7, 2008 at 3:41 PM

You and your ilk are clueless. Clueless because you are not conservative.

Obama ad #1…”McCain was against the tax cuts for the rich before he was for the tax cuts for the rich. Now he wants to make them permanent. The American people cannot trust him because he is a flip flopper”

csdeven on February 7, 2008 at 6:29 PM

csdeven, if you would chew up and spit out Hiney Backside like you used to do the Fredheads it would be appreciated. LOL

Sorry about Mitt, but he left in a gold standard manner.

maxine on February 7, 2008 at 6:34 PM

Where will that leave him in October?

Jimmie on February 7, 2008 at 4:24 PM

That will leave McShamnesty as McFlipFlopper. He was a liberal before the primary, is making grandiose conservative promises which completely flip on his original positions, and in Novemeber he has to tack back to the center.

McCain is untrustworthy because he swung hard right and caved in to the conservatives to get the nomination and is beholding to pay them back when he is the president.

McCain is a lying flip flopper. That is EXACTLY what the first dem ad will be.

Thanks a lot you McCain whores. You just gave the presidency to the dems.

csdeven on February 7, 2008 at 6:40 PM

maxine on February 7, 2008 at 6:20 PM

Which is an excellent opportunity to show how “conservative” and “anti-racist” you are, since Numbers USA was founded in 1996 by leftwing socialist named John Tanton. Conservative Linda Chavez left Tanton’s organization when he wrote a newsletter describing latinos as breeders of a different species from americans.

It’s not a “small minority”. It’s in the roots. And, as the saying goes, not every border enforcement nut is a racialist, but every racialist is a border enforcement nut. Your strings are being pulled.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 6:40 PM

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 5:33 PM

Ahhh. Another one of these types.

csdeven on February 7, 2008 at 6:46 PM

McCain is a lying flip flopper. That is EXACTLY what the first dem ad will be.

Thanks a lot you McCain whores. You just gave the presidency to the dems

LOL!

If only it were Romney instead….

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 6:48 PM

classic liberal.
jaime on February 7, 2008 at 6:00 PM

Just exactly what is this Hiney Von Pewps position? I haven’t waded through 5 pages of his tripe, well I read a few, and so far it is all tripe, but is he a McLiar supporter or simply a crap stirring moron?

csdeven on February 7, 2008 at 6:51 PM

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 6:48 PM

So, you’re basically just anti-Romney? Do you have any values that transcend your vanity?

csdeven on February 7, 2008 at 6:52 PM

but is he a McLiar supporter or simply a crap stirring moron?

csdeven on February 7, 2008 at 6:51 PM

What’s the difference? I’m not sure I can tell.

jaime on February 7, 2008 at 6:54 PM

not every border enforcement nut
Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 6:40 PM

Just what is the definition of a “border enforcement nut”? Can the border be too secure?

csdeven on February 7, 2008 at 6:54 PM

What’s the difference? I’m not sure I can tell.

jaime on February 7, 2008 at 6:54 PM

Good point and I’m trying to find out. So far it looks like the latter.

csdeven on February 7, 2008 at 6:56 PM

csdeven, you are a tool. Everyone including yourself vividly saw the irony I underlined. Your desperate spray and pray strategy basicly has no real purpose or point after Wednesday morning.

I’ll light a candle for you.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 6:58 PM

I’m still with Mitt!. He has opened our eyes to the conservative movement again.

madmonkphotog on February 7, 2008 at 7:01 PM

Good point and I’m trying to find out. So far it looks like the latter.

csdeven on February 7, 2008 at 6:56 PM

I guess if the McCain supporters don’t disavow him there is no difference. It appears from their silence that they all agree with his line of “reasoning”. Therefore, they’re all what Poopy Butt appears to be: hate-filled liberals.

And, I suppose, so is McCain by association.

jaime on February 7, 2008 at 7:01 PM

jaime, I encourage you to keep in mind the fact that you “real conservatives” are going to have to kiss our “hate-filled liberal” asses to gain access to political power from now on. Be nice.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 7:10 PM

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 6:58 PM

Don’t bother with the candle. I have my own light.

Your challenge will to convince real conservatives that your position is more conservative. If you are interested in gaining a modicum of credibility here you’re gonna have to get past me. I’m not gonna start judging your conservative creds while you are in the middle of a pissing contest with people that I know for a fact are conservative. You need to start over and give me the best case you have and I’ll let you know if you are even in the same league.

So far, from what I have read, you appear to be sitting in your grandma’s basement waiting for her to call you up to dinner.

But, I welcome your opinions on true conservatism.

csdeven on February 7, 2008 at 7:15 PM

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 7:10 PM

Well, there you go again. I never claimed to be a “real conservative”, in quotes or otherwise.

But I take your chastisement seriously and I’ll keep in mind that if I ever want to be relevant I’ll have to kiss some hate-filled liberal ass first. By the way, are you John McCain? I recognize his style.

jaime on February 7, 2008 at 7:18 PM

HVP,
I forgot to add that you still haven’t answered my question.

Can the border be too secure?

csdeven on February 7, 2008 at 7:18 PM

To lay the entire illegal immigration debacle at McCains feet is absurdly dishonest.

myamphibian on February 7, 2008 at 5:08 PM

Dishonest? In what way? McCain has been in the Senate for decades. He represents Arizona, a border state that has been overrun with illegal aliens. As we all know, securing our national borders is a federal, not a state, responsibility. If Senator McCain is not to be held responsible for the years of federal inaction in securing our borders, then who should be?

AZCoyote on February 7, 2008 at 7:24 PM

Thanks a lot you McCain whores. You just gave the presidency to the dems.

csdeven on February 7, 2008 at 6:40 PM

Considering your pathetic track record when it comes to political prognosticating, I’m sure this is good news for future President McCain. Go back in your hole you ridiculous Paultard.

myamphibian on February 7, 2008 at 7:27 PM

myamphibian on February 7, 2008 at 7:27 PM

Here is another one that will come true…..McLiar will not win without the conservative base. He cozied up and was smooching my conservative ass this afternoon. It was a good start, but he didn’t have his heart in it. I’m sure he’ll get better at it as the weeks and months go forward. AND that will be his undoing. He was against the tax cuts for the rich before he was against them. He has been a friend of the democrats on many issues, but now is taking the exact opposite positions. McCain is going to be McFlipFlopper. The dems will beat him old ass into the ground with this stuff. His mom is a gibot and his wife is a thief. He wants to bomb Iran and he wants to stay in Iraq for 100 years.

McLiberal will lose in Novemeber and thanks to stupid asses like you who are whores for McLiar, the dems will take this country hard toward socialism.

You must be so proud.

csdeven on February 7, 2008 at 7:34 PM

That should read…

He was against the tax cuts for the rich before he was for the tax cuts for the rich. McCain is a flip flopper and cannot be trusted. He has lied to the republicans, the conservatives, and now he is lying to the American people.

Get used to it. That will be ad #1 against McLiarLiarPantsOnFire.

csdeven on February 7, 2008 at 7:37 PM

McCain and I are 100 times more conservative than RINOs like you csdeven. The democrats loathe the extreme left wing nutbags of their party but they tolerate them because they’re afraid. Can’t you see we are not afraid? McCain was speaking to the sensible conservatives that actually care about the party and more importantly the USA, not freaks like you. You are just a kook fringe element with an overblown ego.

myamphibian on February 7, 2008 at 7:47 PM

AZCoyote on February 7, 2008 at 7:24 PM

Well you can blame him for it if you want to, it’s a free country. I just think it’s ridiculous. I sure don’t hear Obama or Clinton (both senators) acknowledging our pleas for securing the border first. I’m sure there is plenty of blame to go around, but that and $5.35 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

myamphibian on February 7, 2008 at 7:57 PM

Obviously not. If I were a “true conservative” I’d be very concerned that “illegals” were overbreeding criminals who are tracking leprosy all over the country. Perhaps, concious of how classically racist that sounds, I might add some nonsence about the 9-11 hijhackers having snuck in accross El Norte.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 5:50 PM

Wow! A strawman! Who would have seen that coming? How clarifying to know that there is only one dimension to any immigration discussion: racism. You’re definitely not a race-baiting liberal… how silly for anyone to have said so.

Where’s the line forming where we can all stand and wait to kiss your ass? I’m so thankful to have been shown the light, and I’d still like access to the levers of power, so if you please sir, may I have some more?

Lehosh on February 7, 2008 at 8:21 PM

Not half as funny as progressives’ display of violent angst when she blacked out on a Sunday afternoon and planted her grill on the sidewalk, but still…

John McCain spent years in a North Vietnamese prison. A prison? That doesn’t make him a hero.

I’ve heard those exact words from an MDS nutter.

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 8:35 PM

Oops, wrong thread. Hold on

If you are interested in gaining a modicum of credibility here you’re gonna have to get past me.

wrong number?

You need to start over and give me the best case you have and I’ll let you know if you are even in the same league.

Sure. I’ll get right around to that.

Can the border be too secure?

Of course. Let me put it another way.

“Can we ever do enough to feed the poor?”

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 8:48 PM

Esthier on February 7, 2008 at 5:50 PM

Since you decided to invoke Reagan, what do you think he would think of this statement:

And they’re exactly the reason McCain could lose in the general election.

Do you think the gipper would endorse your sentiment.

Be honest, now.

JayHaw Phrenzie on February 7, 2008 at 10:38 PM

Hiney Von Pewps on February 7, 2008 at 8:48 PM

It so typical of you basements dwellers to steal others work instead of thinking it up on your own.

Your vacuous remarks do nothing except reinforce the opinion that you have no core values whatsoever.

You’re gonna have to try harder than that.

csdeven on February 7, 2008 at 11:12 PM

Do you think the gipper would endorse your sentiment.

Be honest, now.

JayHaw Phrenzie on February 7, 2008 at 10:38 PM

What is wrong with you people? McCain is not a conservative. He’s a liberal traitor and RR would have treated him with the same arms length policy he did with all liberals.

See, here’s the difference with McLiar. As a liberal, RR would have had him come to RR’s position. McArrogance thinks he can make the conservative coalition sacrifice their values and come to him.

You McShamnesty dopes have it all backwards. You have moved so far away from RR, that you wouldn’t know a real conservative if you were looking straight at him/her.

And you are so proud.

csdeven on February 7, 2008 at 11:17 PM

McCain and I are 100 times more conservative than RINOs like you csdeven.

Right, because what could be more “Conservative” than removing Constitutionally protected speech? And then suing the FEC to try to continue removing Constitutionally protected speech?

So now we need McCain as President to pick new FEC Commissioners so we can regulate all political speech on the internet.

Because nobody revokes Constitutional rights like a Conservative.

Nobody is less Conservative, or more worrysome as President than McCain. Yes, I’m throwing Ron Paul, Obama, and Hillary into the mix. None of them will work for lasting damage to the Constitution; while McCain has spend 8 years with that primary goal.

I’m sure he’s done though. He lost the outcome after the lawsuit in 2005, and I bet we won’t pick new FEC Commissioners who agree with his goals. Instead he’ll pick a new set that also disagree with him and will block him again.

Seems like an unlikely hope to hang free speech on, doesn’t it?
