I hope your web hosting company can handle the traffic — page hits will be through the roof after McCain’s appearance at 3:00!

Enjoy the conference. I wish I was attending too.

Anton on February 7, 2008 at 6:47 AM

Er… I just checked the agenda that you provided in the link. McCain’s not listed on the website. I thought he was speaking today — or is it tomorrow?

Anton on February 7, 2008 at 6:51 AM

Whether awake or asleep Hot Air is still the best!

Give CPAC one for the Gipper.

Larry L. Sharp on February 7, 2008 at 6:57 AM

Enjoy the festivities. And your coffee :)

Spirit of 1776 on February 7, 2008 at 7:02 AM

Notice on Letterman’s Top Ten list, they’re already going after his (McCain’s) age. Rush said they would.

We’ve been “set up” by the DNC and MSM, “my friends”.

stenwin77 on February 7, 2008 at 7:12 AM

By the way, is this going to be televised? Will HA be posting videos of the speeches? Just wondered.

Exxxactly. And some readers here knocked me for making the same prediction yesterday.

Exxxactly. And some readers here knocked me for making the same prediction yesterday.

They haven’t even started. They will wait until he is the nominee and then every question he gets will be worded to trip him up or piss him off. I predict a public meltdown within a week of the convention.

peacenprosperity on February 7, 2008 at 7:42 AM

I’m curious to see the reaction when the old liberal fossil repeats the claim that he’s just like Ronald Reagan!

There has been speculation that the CPAC crowd will boo McCain but I think a much more appropriate response would be dead silence. No clapping. No talking. Just “Maverick” waiting for some crowd reaction and getting nothing in return.

highhopes on February 7, 2008 at 7:49 AM

Oh man, when Letterman said “keep that ugly ass baby away from me” I thought they were referring to that incident in the 2000 primary.

Are you gonna post the whole videos of the speeches or just snippets?

amkun on February 7, 2008 at 7:52 AM

Bryan:
Thanks for this thread from CPAC. Those of us who cant be there appreciate it. The McCain speech will be dissected even more than Romney’s Mormon speech. I cant wait.

BTW, on the age issue, if McCain had a sense of humor, like Ronaldus Magnus, he could defuse the whole issue by making fun of himself as a preemptive strategy.

Like saying: Listen my friends, when I was in my youth and we caucused with President Lincoln we reached across the aisle then too… or something to poke fun at his age.

Remember Reagan turned the age thing on MOndale in the debate and totally defused the issue — “I refuse to take advantage of my opponents relative youth and inexperience….”

Ahhh those were the days….

Always Right on February 7, 2008 at 7:53 AM

BTW, I hope they dont boo McCain or treat him with any outward disrespect. Let him speak and THEN disagree with him.

Lets not act like a bunch of fascist lefty college students storming the stage or shouting down a speaker.

Always Right on February 7, 2008 at 7:55 AM

I would be interested in the general tone at CPAC.

The GOP has committed adultery against conservatives several times and we are on the verge of divorce. They do not seem to grasp this reality.

Any reality-grasping revelations would be appreciated.

Valiant on February 7, 2008 at 7:55 AM

First the Enemedia goes after his age, then how crazy he is. Predictable, get ready for it.

davecatbone on February 7, 2008 at 7:57 AM

Why, good morning Bryan…

D2Boston on February 7, 2008 at 7:59 AM

Good morning Bryan. Looking forward to the CPAC reports.

I hope McCain isn’t treated rudely. Regardless of who the nominee is, it would be nice to see some civility return to American politics. Either that or it would be cool if we just went all out like they do in British Parliament.

Nice Top 10 by the way. Good to see a blogger who can laugh at himself (or at least his football team).

12thman on February 7, 2008 at 8:05 AM

I hope McCain isn’t treated rudely.

Oh, you mean like he treats us.? Oh, I got it. Like when he called us racists and nativist?

stenwin77 on February 7, 2008 at 8:11 AM

Always Right on February 7, 2008 at 7:53 AM

Yeah, he could neutralize much of it. Unfortunately, his type of humor is cynical and nasty, plus his ego gets in the way, so self deprecatory humor probably isn’t in the game plan. The other thing that makes him vulnerable is his need for constant praise regarding his military service. Any questions for clarification on his behavior during those POW years is prime territory for that meltdown. The media knows that. They’re just waiting.

Yes, that’s precisely what I mean. If we take the “he did it first” attitude we will never get anywhere.

Call it the rebirt of the adult.

12thman on February 7, 2008 at 8:15 AM

Call it the rebirt of the adult.

What’s a rebirt? Doesn’t matter. First of all, McDOLE will NEVER beat Clinton or Obama. Secondly, no matter if McDOLE, Clinton or Obama is elected, the illegal aliens will be granted amnesty and you’ll have to learn the spanish word for rebirt…

“renacimiento del adulto” -there, embrace it.

Yes, that’s precisely what I mean. If we take the “he did it first” attitude we will never get anywhere.

Furthermore, it is PRECISELY that ATTITUDE that birthed our country. Remember the Boston Tea Party? How “nice” was that? and it is that “be nice to everyone” that has gotten us (true conservatives) into the ugly mess that we’re in right now.

peacenprosperity on February 7, 2008 at 7:42 AM

It will be fun to watch. McCain actually believes the press he receives, and he thinks the media adulation he enjoys is genuine. When they turn on him, his legendary “temperment” will surely surface. The Dems and the media are smart though. They’ll wait till he clinches, lest their devious plan be foiled.

You mean like calling a bunch of college students fascists? Language has value. Yours has been diminished.

Nobody should offer any false praise, modesty or respect for Sen. McCain. Republicans don’t stand still when they are labeled as racists by Al Sharpton. But John McCain should get a pass. Puh-lease!

I do not condone throwing things or talking over him, but booing, hissing, vomiting or seizures would be acceptable forms of expression IMHO.

Between your calls to silently kiss McCain’s ass and that pathetic attempt at humor, I’m about to start booing you.

Come down off your highhorse.

True conservatives heh. This isnt the Boston Tea party it’s a convention. Oh here let me translate: This is NOT the Boston TEA Party ITS a CONVENTION.

But yes McCain’s age will be a factor. That’s because it’s obvious, he’s an older guy.

Dash on February 7, 2008 at 9:03 AM

McCain is in a very precarious position. He has voted as a liberal on many issues earning him the praise of the dems. He will have to disavow that behavior before any of us true conservatives will believe him. If he does he will be labeled as a flip flopper. If he does not, he will not get our support.

In a less serious matter…

If Allahpundit wins the “Conservative Blogger of the Year” award at CPAC, who accepts for him? Is he there in disguise?

Or is the proper procedure for Michelle and Bryan to walk up to the podium wearing paper bags on their heads in order to accept the award for Allah?

I think you guys need to prepare for this before it happens.

Anton on February 7, 2008 at 9:27 AM

Bryan,

From that pic, I think you need something much stronger than coffee.

TheFamousOne on February 7, 2008 at 9:28 AM

Michael Reagan has a great column up today titled The CPAC Challenge… worth reading.

This is the first CPAC I’ve missed since ‘02 and I’m in withdrawal. Not only can’t I be there, but work won’t let me stream CSPAN. I’m deaf, dumb and blind here. I’m counting on you to give a full accounting, warts and all.

BP, try the double espresso at the Starbucks in the lobby.

pistolero on February 7, 2008 at 9:46 AM

Unlike some on here that want to pretend to take the moral high ground so they can feel better about themselves, I hope McCain is booed right off the stage. In fact, it would be irresponsible for people in attendance of CPAC NOT to do so. McCain needs to know that conservatives have a real problem with him and won’t just roll over and vote for him just like the elites in the GOP and media who pushed him into the nomination expect us to do. If we want conservatism to dominate the GOP, sitting back and “taking it” is the absolute worst thing we could possibly do. You have to fight for what you want. Plus, if he realizes that he can’t win without the base, he might concede some things.

davenp35 on February 7, 2008 at 9:50 AM

Conservatives need to realize that the longer you fight McCain, the longer the primary campaign goes on, the more likely Huck will be the VP.

If you don’t want Huck to be the VP, I would end this now and give McCain a chance to coalesce the party and choose a conservative VP.

If Rudy had been the nominee, it would have been divorce/Rudy in drag jokes, and if Thompson had been the nominee, it would have been trophy wife/Jeri’s tits jokes.

These people hate republicans, and use their sneering Northeastern elitist platforms to spew that venom. They are going to do it no matter who wins the primaries and becomes the nominee.

It seems that people who would prefer a GOP president shouldn’t help them in their mission by panicking when they behave so predictably.

Romney for US Senate 2010. It’s time for JF Kerry to retire to his wife’s many estates, and fly his wife’s private jets around … because JF Kerry apparently loves big tornadoes.

funky chicken on February 7, 2008 at 10:13 AM

Romney couldn’t even win GOP primaries in large states with the full force of Limbaugh, Coulter, Ingraham, National Review magazine, Hotair, Michelle Malkin, etc, etc behind him.

But somehow he’s a better candidate in the general election?

That’s simply delusional.

davenp35 on February 7, 2008 at 9:50 AM

Yeah, duder- rudely booing a speaker and presumtive nominee is always the best way to win him over to your side. Real classy.

I’ve been saying for months that I’d sit out the election if McCain was nominated (same for flip-flop Mitt and other non-conservatives), but you and those like you have gone completely off the deep end.

The voters have spoken- McCain will be the nominee and no amount of Internet caterwauling is going to change that. Vote for him or don’t- your choice. But no need to be obnoxious about it either.

Hollowpoint on February 7, 2008 at 10:38 AM

bnelson44 on February 7, 2008 at 10:28 AM

Why? In McCain’s eyes, he’s been able to win without the support of conservatives so far. Besides, his campaign and its top supporters consider people really “conservative” as people like Graham and Martinez.

But, yeah, he’s changed since then. He seems to have changed a whole lot since then, which is a wee bit odd for a grown man.

funky chicken on February 7, 2008 at 10:39 AM

Gingrich for VP!

btw, if anyone is there to see Huck, ask him if his faith and religious background as a pastor prepare him or prevent him from using nuclear weapons in the event of an attack on the US? I’d love to hear the answer to that. I mean, we train people in the USAF and USN for years, go through all kinds of psych evaluations etc. just to make sure they’ll turn the key if needed. Since every single President has to send men andw women to die in harm’s way…how can a pastor do that? His campaign just hits me back with canned email responses.

Most of them weren’t “very close” races at all, and exit polling suggests that most of Hucksters voters would’ve gone to McCain- not Romney- had Huckster dropped out.

That should really come as no surprise- Huckabee isn’t exactly a conservative stalwart on anything but God, Gays and Guns.

Either way, it’s almost impossible to nominate someone other than the incumbent VP if he wants to run. Aaaaaaack! And Romney is very, very shaky on guns. As recently as December, 2007 he was still OK with signing an assault weapons ban if congress passed one. Southerners don’t like that. They especially don’t like hearing it from a super-Yankee like Romney.

And if Romney was such a strong candidate, how on earth could Huckabee “play spoiler?”

Gingrich sux dude. He was cheating with his own secretary when he was railing against Clinton for cheating with the intern. Puh-leeze.

Good morning everyone. There are rumors circulating that our campaign will play a video featuring President Ronald Reagan introducing John McCain prior to his address at CPAC today. These rumors are inaccurate. Our campaign has never had any plans to produce or show any such video.

He tried for way, way too long to make friends with them, or convince them that he was a nice guy who cared about their opinions. McCain (and the rest of republicans) will hopefully learn a few things about their “friends” in the press, if nothing else this year.

Just like his aide Weaver has hopefully learned a few things about his “friends” who work in dem legislative offices. He was upset (deservedly so) about the smears thrown at his boss in 2000, and went around blowing off steam with people he thought he could trust.

Whoops! The “loyal opposition” isn’t loyal to the nation, so why on earth did he think they’d be loyal to him?

Bryan-

Sleep? We don’t need no stinkin’ sleep!

Who would give McCain a little more credibility with conservative voters, improve his election odds, and be able to serve as the nominee in 2016?

Other than God, I don’t know. No one who is friends with McCain has credibility with conservative voters, starting with Crist.

It’s the Revenge of the Rockefellers.

McCain won’t blame the media if he loses, he’ll blame conservatives… and if he wins, his gratitude will be directed at the media.

ruh-roh hollowpoint. Zetterson’s gonna question your IQ too. Anybody who thinks Romney has some credibility issues ain’t too bright, ya hear?

VP who would help McCain? Duncan Hunter, but I hear from our punditocracy leadership that he’s boring. Bob Riley (gov. Alabama?) maybe, but AL hasn’t been nearly as proactive on the illegal problem as GA and OK. Bob Owens, former governor of CO? Very conservative on everything, but never heard much about illegals from him that I recall.

I don’t want him taking Coburn or DeMint because they are just way too valuable and important where they are. The same goes for Sessions, who also would have a huge media outcry about stupid, false charges of racism against him (think Anita Hill style stuff).

Really, if McCain wants to be trusted at all in immigration, he needs to spend the rest of the spring and summer working his ass off to get that 700 miles of fence actually built, and he needs to call Chertoff to testify in the Senate about why it hasn’t been done. I don’t think anything else will do the trick for me…..and I’ve said I’m going to vote for him if he is the nominee.

If he isn’t willing to do that, well, I still vote for him for POTUS and get ready to camp out at Sessions’s office here in Montgomery, doing whatever I can to help fight/defeat the amnesty.

I could bring myself to vote for McCain if I have to, but I really and truly cannot vote for Huck. He turns my stomach, quite literally.

aero on February 7, 2008 at 10:47 AM

My thoughts exactly. I’ve reconciled myself with McCain, but a Huckabee… presence on the ticket would give me a very large pause indeed.

A question in a “how did we come to this” mode. And admittedly, in hindsight:

Did we give up on George Allen too easily? Should the response at the time have been a full-on “yeah, he said it. He shouldn’t have. Get over it.” rather than surrendering his candidacy and validity almost without question.

Better is the enemy of good. Do we have so little faith in our ideas that a single stupid utterance should be allowed to have this sort of horrible consequences? Do we really believe that human perfection exists, and can be demanded for our candidate (although, apparently, not necessarily from theirs)? For want of a nail…

Amen to that. I say Crist is gay because he is. I look right out my office window to his condo. Know him personally. He is.

I’m not judging – but how would chosing Charlie exactly help with the conservative base? Believe me, Charlie thinks he will be the VP choice. Of course, so do about 10 other people, including Huck.

And yes, I am a Mittbot. I happen to think he is our only chance against Obama. Don’t agree with him on everything but at least he hasn’t ravaged the 1st amendment.

I’ve been a member of HA since Michelle started the site… not a newbie.

MT, no McCain won’t thank the media, because they will treat him like shit if he is the nominee. They will treat any GOP nominee like shit. McCain doesn’t like being treated like shit. It makes him angry. I’ve heard that sometimes when he’s angry that he –gasp– cusses like a sailor!

If he loses, Coulterite conservatives (or harpies and harridans for Hillary) wouldn’t be a bad place to look if one was into assigning blame. I know military active duty members will do so.

funky chicken on February 7, 2008 at 11:12 AM

I’m not too convinced any Veep choice can help McCain. It’s tail/dog dilemma – VP is the tail and I don’t think you’ll ever see it wagg’n that dog. Applied to this situation, I think Butthead is on to something with his statement,
You can’t polish a turd, Beavis.
